As a psychologist and hypnotherapist I am very interested in the scientific study of hypnosis and its applications. I know from my personal experience that the use of hypnosis really helps in therapy – enabling clients to draw on their own resources and bring about changes more rapidly than would usually occur in treatment. Despite the fact that the use of hypnosis has been approved by the British Medical Association for over fifty years, it is still not fully understood and is often regarded with scepticism.There is nothing mystical or weird about hypnosis. It is an entirely natural state of mind. Brain scans have not revealed anything unusual or special about brain function in hypnosis. Normally during the day, we drift between different levels of consciousness – between being fully awake and alert, to being relaxed and dreamy, and also times when we may be physically active but mentally “switched off”, like when jogging, swimming or driving the car!. In hypnotherapy a relaxed state is brought

about on purpose, allowing the logical, conscious mind to take a back seat, enabling the client to have access to the more creative, emotional and feeling thought processes that are usually subconscious.As reasonable, intelligent human beings, we may consider that our decisions and behaviour are rational and sensible, but, in fact, our conscious thought processes account for only a very small fraction of our brain activity. Our subconscious mind has responded to a situation before we have even had time to decide how to react. Have you ever had the experience of responding emotionally to someone you meet, before you even remember who they are? This type of brain activity is called the “subconscious”, because it is usually outside of our conscious awareness, yet it dictates our behaviour.We all have a store of subconscious memories, feelings and experiences that influence our behaviour. In hypnotherapy we draw on these to tackle problems and bring about changes and healing.

Reggie is our Gsd X lab. He is a true gentleman and has two main passions in life, going for walks and riding in the car. He frequently accompanies me to the surgery when I am on night duty. Usually he waits patiently in the car until I have seen the emergency and we drive home again. However, he recently got a little bit more involved than he had bargained for. A dog had become critically ill after surgery and required a blood transfusion, it was 4.30am and the closest available blood was in Loughborough. How about it Reggie? So Reggie became a blood donor and saved a life.Although dogs have blood groups, they are not the same as our blood groups. Dogs are classified as DEA 1.1 positive, or DEA 1.1 negative. Ideally dogs should be given transfusions of the correct type of blood in order to avoid potentially serious reactions. Fortunately though, we

can usually give one donation of blood without having to cross match. In an emergency this is invaluable. It can only ever be done once in a dog’s lifetime, should that dog have a future emergency, further transfusions can only be given after blood typing and cross matching.The Pet Blood Bank (PBB) is a charitable organisation which was set up 5 years ago .It holds regular donor sessions at which suitable dogs are brought by their owners to give blood. The blood is processed into plasma, the clear part of the blood and packed red blood cells, a concentrated form of the oxygen carrying red blood cells. The plasma can be frozen and stored. The packed red cells can be refrigerated and stored for 6 weeks. Alfie, a cocker spaniel came to the Bilton Vets recently, looking very poorly. His body had started to attack and destroy his own red blood cells, within 24 hours

his blood count fell to a critical level. A small sample of his blood was rushed up to the PBB at Loughborough where it was typed and cross matched. A bag of packed red cells was then sent back to the practice for transfusion into Alfie. This was enough to keep Alfie stable until drugs brought his abnormal immune reaction under control. Happily Alfie has made a full recovery.The PBB holds donor sessions in Rugby 2-3 times a year at the Bilton Vets and at the Rainsbrook Vets. New donors are needed especially german shepherds, dobermans, greyhounds and boxers. Southam Gymnastics is a local non-profit making organisation managed by a committee of dedicated volunteers and has just been lucky enough to receive funding to purchase a new vaulting box to replace our old vault that is becoming worn. We would like to thank the Kingscliffe Fund who has generously given us a grant of £750 through the Heart of England Community Foundation. We would also like to thank ‘Vision for Southam’ who have just allocated us a grant of £428 to put towards equipment. Southam Gymnastics was founded in 1997 by local residents Marion Childs and Lorna Dixon to enable local children to have greater access to gymnastic classes. The club, run by Head Coach Karen Edwards and 20 volunteers, provides opportunities for children of all abilities to participate in gymnastics. The volunteers all give up their time freely for the love of gymnastics, the desire to help children enjoy sport, gain new skills and for the personal sense of reward that volunteering brings. Children can attend from 4 years and over. Classes are held at the Graham Adams Centre in Southam and run on Mondays from 3.30pm, and Wednesdays

from 5.15pm. If your child is interested please contact us. We also have many opportunities for volunteers in a
