We’re dreaming of a slim Christmas say Southam and Rugby Slimmers.

We’re all familiar with the 12 days of Christmas but Southam and Rugby slimmers are celebrating the 12 weighs of Christmas.

Members of the Slimming World groups are getting into the Yuletide spirit early this year as they embark on a festive mission, to lose a stone or more in the 12 weeks before the party season.

More than 60% of Warwickshires population are overweight or obese – so Slimming World is launching its Countdown to Christmas campaign with a promise to help anyone in Southam or Rugby who wants to slim down for Christmas to make their weight-loss wish come true!

“With 12 weeks to go to Christmas, there’s still plenty of time to hit the party season a dress size smaller, or even more,” says Sarah Edwards a Slimming World consultant who herself

lost 7 stone by following the Slimming World healthy eating plan.

My name is Jonathan Small. I’m 42, married to Diane, and father of a 4-year old son (Evan). I am a Podiatrist, who has his own long-established practice in Southam, Warwickshire (www.healthfirstsoutham.co.uk) and also runs Health First Foot Care Supplies business (www.firstaidforfeet.co.uk).

Formerly I was Diabetic Foot Specialist at Warwick & Stratford Hospitals, and a Gait & Movement Analyst at Royal Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital. I play snooker in the Rugby & District league, and pool in the Daventry & District league. I live at Defford, near Pershore, Worcestershire, where I enjoy the sport of Dragon Boat racing and am secretary of Pershore Phoenix Dragon Boat Club (www.dragonboating.org.uk) which races in National League events throughout the country.

Last year was the 15th anniversary of my mother’s death at the age of 55. She died of complications from a rare condition called Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis), in conjunction with the circulatory disorder Raynaud’s disease.

To raise funds for the Raynaud’s & Scleroderma Association, I volunteered to do a Charity Trek with a team of husky dogs across Lapland (you may remember seeing an article about it last year). However, in April 2010, just two weeks before the trek, I required surgery on an infected abscess which prevented me from going on the trek, and then the whole trek was cancelled due

to the volcanic ash cloud.

To keep fit for any replacement trek, I entered Birmingham Half Marathon (it was 23 years since my last run of that distance!). I developed a nerve injury during training, but struggled through the race in October 2010 on strong painkillers and with a heat-pack strapped to my leg.

From 15th – 25th September 2011, I am meant to be ice-climbing one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Cotopaxi (in Ecuador) is nearly 20000 feet high - that’s over two thirds the height of Everest. However, my injury curse reared its head in March with torn knee cartilage requiring surgery. This was carried out in May, so I have been training hard to get back in shape for the most difficult of all my challenges. Indeed, an expedition leader has told me that it is the most difficult of all the charity treks out there!

To top it all, my old faithful hiking boots fell apart in August whilst training in the Brecon Beacons. So if it’s not my body saying “No! –don’t do it”, then my equipment seems to take over the call!

I will have completed the trek and be worthy of all the fundraising support I have received. I am close to achieving my quest to raise £4000 for my charity. Do you know that statutory sick pay is only £81.60 per week for a maximum of 28 weeks and jobseekers allowance is only £67.50 per week for a single person over 25, it is only £105.95 if you are over 25 and married? An accident, sickness and unemployment policy usually has a maximum benefit period of 24 months and you have to be ill or

claiming jobseekers allowance for more than 30 days, this is known as the Deferred Period. The benefit can then be backdated to day 1 which means you in effect get paid for the month you have been ill or unemployed. To reduce costs you can select an excess period of say 30 days which means you only receive the monthly benefit or part thereof for the days ill or unemployed over 30 days. Unemployment cover usually has

an initial period at the start of your policy of 90 or 120 days whereby if you are made redundant during this period you can not claim. It is also very important to remember that accepting voluntary redundancy means you can not then claim for becoming unemployed. The amount of benefit chosen is usually your monthly mortgage payment and associated household bills. The

Insurance Company will usually exclude any medical conditions which you have been treated for within the previous 12 months

before you start the policy and the premium may increase over the years.

Another type of income protection insurance is known as Permanent Health Insurance. The main differences being the benefit period is usually to your retirement age or to the end of your mortgage term, the Insurance Company cannot cancel your policy even if you are likely to make multiple claims

due to an ongoing illness and the premium can be guaranteed not to increase throughout the term. The Insurance Company will calculate the premium based on your age, sex, occupation, smoking habits and health.
