We were fortunate to hear from two veterans in our service. Mr Bill Alcock is a World War II veteran who fought in Borneo defending Australia from the Japanese. Mr Jack Panossian fought in Vietnam. Both veterans gave an insight into what active service entails and we thank them for their great service to our country. Our Year 9 students in their History studies have researched and created presentations on Australian soldiers who fought in World War One. They have also created crosses for display in our ANZAC service to recognise and commemorate the actions of those killed in the war. The crosses will be taken to Papua New Guinea by Mrs Lee-Ann Alcock to be placed on the unmarked graves of fallen soldiers as part of ANZAC Day commemorations.

Campus Ministry A crucial aspect of life at Irene McCormack Catholic College is our Irene’s Service Learning Program. The Program is an opportunity to experience being thoughtful and generous to others. It is about putting our faith in action, from the Word in Scripture to our Patron Irene’s example of caring for those in need. ‘Brighton Reading at Breakfast’ has seen students from the College head over early to hear youngsters reading in Brighton Catholic Primary School’s Library. A big thanks to all involved including Mrs Bell, Miss Milne, Mrs Fitzgerald & Mr Parkes. In Term 2, our visits to the RAFFA base will begin and students will need to sign up as volunteers through the Campus Ministry Office. The ‘Launch of LifeLink Day’ saw representatives from the College travel to Aranmore Catholic College with many other schools represented to hear from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe about the work LifeLink does to support the Church’s charities throughout the Diocese. Our representatives: Anya Solaz McGann (Year 7), Indahly Gebert-Tchan (Year 8), Billy Hamilton (Year 9), Ruby Walsh (Year 10), Dylan Johnson (Year 11) and Katrina Boult (Year 12) were outstanding in their participation and in their asking of questions. Thank you to everybody for your contributions to Project Compassion. The College Raised $2000 for Caritas’ work with those in need around the world. Year 11 & 12 Retreats this Term were a great success. It is overwhelmingly common for staff to feel privileged working with the young people in our care. The way our students enter into the spirit of our Retreat experiences is a fantastic credit to them, their families and to our College culture. The Year 11 Retreat was held at the North Perth Retreat House and centered on students making good decisions for themselves and those who love them. Our guest presenter was Louise Clarke who shared daughter, Bronte’s story, and the ripple effect of loss in our lives. In effect, our day can be summed up by the importance of our choices and how our choices don’t just impact on ourselves directly, but instead on all around us, especially those we love. The Year 12 Retreat was held again in New Norcia. This is where Irene McCormack taught for four years and where students from our College have been for the past eleven years for their final school Retreat. A huge thanks to the staff of New Norcia for their hospitality, to our College staff who shared with and cared for our Year 12 students and of course to our 2018 Graduating Class, thank you for three very moving, honest and inspirational days together. The threads of the Retreat included Peace, Community and seeing evidence of God in our lives. All of this was very evident and a joy to share over the Retreat.

Plans are well under way for our Irene McCormack Day Celebrations to be held on Friday 11 th May. There will be opportunities for students to participate in some service activities so students will need to volunteer for these at the Campus Ministry Office. The focus of the day is Prayer, Service and Justice. We will have a variety of events running throughout the day covering aspects of all of these, as well as celebration of Irene’s faith, life and inspiration. All money raised will go to the Archbishop Costelloe’s ‘LifeLink’ to help fund many charities throughout the Diocese. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the retirement of our long-term Head of Religious Education, Mr Kevin O’Brien. Mr O’Brien has been a stalwart of the College for many years. He has helped build the culture of Irene McCormack Catholic College and is well loved and admired as a teacher, colleague and friend. His work as Head of Religious Education and in establishing Irene’s Pilgrimage have been highlights of his work in the College. Many Mothers and Grandparents will remember fondly Mr O’Brien’s hosting of our Mother’s Day and Grandparents Day Morning Teas. His generosity, care for our students and staff, pastoral leadership, sense of humour and practical nature have made him a joy to know and we look forward to his continued occasional visits back to the College between his caravanning adventures and grandparent duties. Thank you, Mr O’Brien. Have a wonderful Term 1 Break. John Swindells Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry

Japanese “Ki o tsuke, Rei, Chakuseki”. We start every Japanese class in the same way they do in Japan, with the students and teacher bowing to each other. The first Term of Japanese classes at the College has seen the Year 7 and 8 students able to greet in Japanese, ask and say their names and ages, understand commands, count to 99, and more. They have been surprised by how students their age in Japan live their lives - cleaning their own schools, preparing and eating hot cooked lunches every day in the classrooms, taking part in various club activities at school after classes, and many attending private tutoring after school. At night they wash under the shower before relaxing in a hot bath (since each member of the family washes under the shower first, they don’t need to change the water in the bath each time, which is automatically regulated to keep it at a constant, hot temperature). Our students also learned about Japanese people gathering under the cherry blossom trees, full of delicate flowers, every April and enjoying picnics with family, friends and colleagues, to celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossoms, which lasts for only 1-2 weeks each year. The weather forecast segment on the TV news shows, predicts and follows the timing of the blossoming of the trees throughout the country each year, so that people can plan their picnics. Minna-san, korekara mo gambatte kudasai! Arigatou gozaimasu. Mr Maurice Bonarrigo Japanese Teacher

Year 10 Global Leadership and Year 11 ATAR Geography Fieldwork Camp

In the final week of Term 1, Mrs Jones and Mr McLatchie combined their classes to visit Wharncliffe Mill in Margaret River. On the way to the campsite, we visited Kaarakin Conservation Centre to see the endangered Carnaby’s cockatoos and the efforts the volunteers take in helping this species. The Year 11 students were given a tour of Xanadu Winery and studied the agricultural process of making wine as part of their fieldwork studies. The Year 10 students were studying the Sustainable Management of Forests in South West Australia, and completed the Nearer to Nature Sustainable Forests Program run by the Department of Parks and Wildfire. Both classes participated in a Sense-ational night walk. A wonderful time was had by all who attended. Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Sciences

Year 12 Outdoor Education Expedition The Year 12 General Outdoor Education class had their first multi-day expedition this week. The students spent three days snorkeling, surfing, camping and bike riding on Wadjemup. The outcomes for the camp were for students to be assessed in snorkeling and camping skills for their WACE course, as well as Units of Competency for their Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation. Many students had already been to Wadjemup with the school in Year 10, so to revisit a place they were familiar with helps them to strengthen connection with Rottnest Island. The more they visit a place the more a relationship strengthens and care is given to the environment. You could see this over the time on expedition, with students sharing their past experiences with others and making new memories with peers, teachers and nature. A few highlights were snorkeling through huge caves at Little Parakeet Bay, seeing dolphins swimming within 50 meters of them as they were riding around Longreach Bay, surfing at Fairbridge Bluff and seeing stingrays and crayfish at Little Armstrong Bay.
