    PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

When a community comes together to grieve the loss of a colleague, teacher and friend as Berwick College has done this week when I received the sad news that Mr David Goyen had passed away unexpectedly, it brings the opportunity for the strength of character and resilience of this school community to shine.

In the midst of sadness, gestures of kindness in the condolences we received from families, past students, neighbouring schools were received and appreciated. The Assistant Principals, Wellbeing Staff from both our school and the Department acted to support students and staff, opportunities were given to share stories and memories and to appreciate the supportive relationships we have both at the College and personally. Please feel free to contact the College on 8768 1000 if you have any concerns about your child and would like to connect them with our Wellbeing Team.

We have tried to minimise disruption to student learning and to provide continuity for programs and extra curricular activities. Students continue to be involved in assessments, sporting competitions, camps and excursions and teachers continue to focus on report writing, marking assessments and delivering the 2017 curriculum for the Headstart program .

We had 40 new students commence Headstart this week and we formally welcome our new Year 7 2017 parents on Monday 5th December for an information evening and Year 7 2017 students on Tuesday 6th December for Orientation Day. My thanks to our Administration staff, Junior School Coordinator Ms Lauren Manolitsa and the Senior School Team who have been communicating and meeting with parents regularly the past two terms to ensure new families have all the information they need for a successful transition to our College.

The Year 10 and 11 exams were completed on Friday 11th November. Exam supervision, timetabling and resourcing is an organisational challenge and the smooth execution of these activities is a credit to our Senior School staff. Our Year 12 students have almost finished their exams and together with families and staff are looking forward to their Valedictory Night where students will be presented with their VCE or VCAL certificate and subject awards.

Our Basketball Academy students have competed in the State Finals with the Year 9/10 Girls—3rd in State, Year 8 Boys 3rd in State and Year 9/10 Boys coming 7th in State. Congratulations to the students, coaches and staff for these wonderful results. The Monash Learning Team also raised $321 for the Starlight Foundation this week.

It is my pleasure to announce our new School Captains for 2017 are Delaney McGill, Ashleigh Mashado, Borna Masoudi and Noah O’Halloran who are keen to contribute and serve our school community.

Four of our staff and 24 students leave today on the World Challenge Tour to Vietnam and Cambodia. As part of this tour staff and students will be working in the community of Tonle Bati practically and assisting teaching English to children. Some of our Basketball Academy students and staff leave on their USA Tour where students will apply their Academy training and learning in competing against some of the most advanced basketball programs and facilities the world has to offer. The Tour will also provide a broad understanding of US College education and the diverse pathway choices available for student athletes. We wish them safe travel and hope they enjoy the unique, memorable learning experiences.

Finally, I would like to warmly invite you to our Musical Performance Night being held on Tuesday 29th November at 7:30pm. Our three concert bands, flute, guitar and vocal ensembles will be performing. Our Indonesian Night Market is also being held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Monday 5th December and our Presentation Evening on Wednesday 14th December from 7:00 to 9:00pm will be a special night. Not only will students be acknowledged for their academic endeavours but Mrs Sharyn Collins, Mr Pat Mulcahy and Mrs Carol Wallace will receive their 20 year service award and Ms Nadine Gibson a 30 year service award. Three staff will receive 10 year service awards and five staff 15 year service awards at a staff lunch at the end of term It is wonderful to formally recognise these staff for their service to Berwick College.

The BCDA’s first dance production “Evil-Lution” was a huge success! We had almost two sold out shows, great reviews and most importantly our students had a fantastic time. We value opportunities where our students can openly collaborate and share their creativity with each other and we will continue to offer this opportunity each year.

A VERY big thank you goes to Ms Julie Clish for helping us bring Evil-Lution to life!

On Tuesday, 8th of November Neill Gladwin and Deon Nuku, from the Victorian State School Spectacular, came back to our school for the second time to audition our students for the 2017 principal dance ensemble. All selected students did extremely well in the commercial jazz/hip hop audition and were very professional in their interaction with the VSSS creative team.

Our Year 7 BCDA students attended Kinky Boots on November 2nd and had a ball! The high energy musical had a great message of diversity, acceptance and life choices.

Good luck to all of our students for their upcoming end of year dance concerts and enjoy the Headstart program with your new teachers and students!

YEAR 9 HEALTHY ME EXCURSION/INCURSION This Semester the Year 9 Health girls have been studying Nutrition and Community Health. As part of this the girls were given the opportunity to come up with an idea to tie these two concepts together. We decided on walking to Akoonah Park so the girls could map out the walking trail and see the accessibility of a walking path in the Berwick area. The girls have also been working on nutritious recipes to create when given a budget. After walking through Akoonah Park, we walked to the Beaconsfield shops and the girls purchased the items they required to create their meals. We then walked back to school and made our way to the food tech rooms- where the girls put on their master chef hats and created some delicious and (mostly) nutritious meals. At the end of the day the girls had a Yoga Instructor come in for a mindfulness session. The girls had an enjoyable day and it was a wonderful way to finish off the Semester!

HAY FEVER It’s wonderful to feel that summer is on its way, but for the Hay Fever sufferers Spring & summer can be quite miserable!

The Chemist supplies many products for Hay fever that will help to relieve some of the symptoms.

The symptoms could be itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, congestion and pressure around the head and nose. Itchy roof of the mouth and general feeling of malaise may be present too!

If your child requires antihistamines for hay fever, please ensure that the medication is kept in the Health Centre in the interest of safety. There are many products on the market with various strengths and duration; this will ensure that medication is not shared among friends and the correct dose is given.

Some mornings do not appear to be a day of a “high pollen count”, so your child may not take any anti histamine. However by 11am your child may be miserable due to the symptoms of Hay fever. If there were anti histamines in the Health Centre, these could be administered to your child. At times, symptoms may so bad the student is required to be taken home!

VICTORIA POLICE LETTER TO SCHOOL COMMUNITIES Parents/Carers of Students (Years 7-12),

I am writing to inform you that we have received information from Victoria Police about local ‘pop-up’ parties and social gatherings being organised via social media which are unsafe for the young people attending.

These parties are being hosted in private homes, abandoned buildings and public halls across south eastern and eastern Melbourne.

Victoria Police acknowledges that many young people are also attending safe parties. However, Victoria Police has made a number of recommendations to ensure young people can safely attend local gatherings:

Talk to your children and be mindful of where they are Be vigilant around monitoring all of your child’s social media accounts (consider there may be multiple

accounts) and look online at any events your child wants to attend Investigate any party your child is attending, and be satisfied of where your child is and who they are with.

If a party location is unknown one or two weeks prior to a party date, this may be of concern. Underage alcohol drinking and drug use is not recommended Students with any wellbeing concerns or issues they are encouraged to speak to our Wellbeing Team

If you have any information that may assist police, phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If you are concerned that your child has been the victim of a sexual assault and may require support, please contact Centre Against Sexual Assault on 1800 806 292.

Grief is a natural response you experience when you lose someone close to you. There is no right way to grieve – everyone is different. If your grief is continuing for a long time, is very upsetting or is stopping you from getting on with life then it is important to get help. Our local headspace centre is a good start (66 Victor Cres, Narre Warren – Ph: 1800 367 968) and there are some other supports listed below. Feel free to contact our Wellbeing Team at the school for further information.

Year 11 Loddon Prison Excursion On Monday the 10th and 24th of October the three Year 11 Legal Studies classes travelled 1.5 hours by bus on an excursion to Middletown Prison, located directly next to Loddon Prison in Castlemaine. Middleton is a low security prison that aims to rehabilitate its prisoners whilst preparing them to make a transition back into society.

Students had the opportunity to talk to prisoners and ask a number of questions about why they ended up in prison, what life is like in prison and whether or not it had helped rehabilitate them.

This excursion was valuable as students were able to see the reasons for criminal sanctioning in action with the prisoners given the opportunity to rehabilitate and being given a prison sentence as a deterrent to others in the community from acting in the same, or a similar, way.

The prison officers complimented our students on the respect they showed and way in which they conducted themselves throughout the excursion.

Miss Taylor and Mr Watson Year 11 Legal Studies Teachers

The excursion to the prison was extremely informative. We learned that most prisoners were not first time offenders, specifically one of them had been in and out of prison since the 80’s mainly for drugs and armed robbery. We also learned that prisons are a much safer environment compared to what they were in the past. Jordan Fielder

On Monday the 10th and 24th of October the Year 11 Legal classes from Berwick went to Loddon Prison. When we got there a lady spoke to us, we collected badges and then had to walk through security, including being waved down by a detector.

Once entering the prison we were taken into a ‘lounge’ room and the lady just spoke to us again about a few things. The prisoners were brought out, they played a game where we got three guesses of what we thought they did. They explained their stories a little bit and we were given the chance to ask questions. Afterwards, we split into four groups where each prisoner would move around to and explained their stories in greater depth. We were given the opportunity to ask more questions. The experience of meeting these people was amazing, they were really open with us and were happy to talk about anything. They encouraged us to stay out of trouble and not make the same mistakes they did. Rhiannan Batty

I enjoyed the prison as students had the chance to speak with prisoners and hear their stories on how they got themselves into jail and their experiences while being in there, such as food, accommodation and what the prison-ers do for work. It was interesting when we left the prisoners and searching up newspaper articles on each of the prisoners that we met. Overall it was a really good experience and I would go again. Emily Rolls

    FREE DRESS DAY—THURSDAY 24TH NOVEMBER

The College will be holding a free dress day on Thursday, 24th of November to support the Chaplaincy program at Berwick College. Our Chaplain Frank Jetmar is an integral member of our welfare team providing support to students, staff and families. Chaplaincy also runs numerous programs throughout the year supporting whole year levels. Each year the chaplaincy committee is responsible for raising funds to ensure that the school can continue to have a Chaplain. We run an annual Drive inn, a BBQ at Bunnings and gather support from the Berwick community. On Thursday the 24th we are asking for the school community to support Chaplaincy in our school. We are asking for students to come in free dress and bring a donation of any amount that will help ensure that this valuable program continues in our school. Mr Pat Mulcahy—Assistant Principal and Chaplaincy Committee Member.

Congratulations to Emily Spano (Frost 1) in Year 9 and her horse Monty who placed 5th in the Interschool Dressage Series this year. Emily did an amazing job at representing Berwick College and we are very proud of her. The competition is comprised of various disciplines and Emily has to ride in each over 4 days. The scores were then added together for results at the end of this year.

Emily hopes to represent Berwick College in the Easter holiday break 2017 at the Interschool State Title Series held at Werribee Equestrian Park with a new horse names Wartrack. This new partnership is looking quite promising. Well done Emily who always puts in 100%.

NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF REMEMBERING On the 11th November we remember all who made the ultimate sacrifice in all wars. Some were not much older than the students at our school. We remember the hardship and appalling conditions they endured. LEST WE FORGET

November is the month we promote MOVEMBER. Funds are raised, by growing a moustache, to raise the awareness of men's health. The issues that are at the forefront with men are: depression, anxiety, suicide, prostate cancer and heart disease.

Often men ignore signs as they are too busy with work or just life in general. We need to look out for our men, whether it be sons, husbands, fathers, grandfathers or work colleagues.

VCAL HEADSTART As you would be aware the 2017 timetable has started and VCAL students are now working with their new teachers and class groups. It is important that all students come prepared for whatever classes they have for the day, including having the relevant books and writing utensils. Parents should be aware that all VCAL are now required to purchase workbooks/textbooks through the Lamont booklist.

Most students undertaking VCAL will be undertaking a blocked VET course as part of their course. These blocked VET courses usually run for most or all of the day on a Wednesday or Friday at either Berwick College or at another location off campus. Please note that these blocked VET courses WILL NOT be running during Headstart. Students are not required at school on the day of their blocked VET course or the day set aside for their work placement during head start (Wednesday and Friday). During this time students can be actively looking for a work placement to begin when school returns in 2017. All VCAL students are required to have a work placement to meet the requirements of the certificate. Students should have a work placement organised and ready to go by the end of February next year. While students can use their free days during Headstart to ring or visit potential work places, no work placement can begin until all paperwork is completed and is signed by our principal. VET courses that run in the normal school timetable (throughout the week) WILL run during Headstart.

SENIOR VCAL (2017) Senior VCAL student will be organising and participating in the fundraising event

‘Relay for Life’ held in March next year. This is a 24 hour event where the senior VCAL

students raise money for the Cancer Council. During head start students will receive

information on how to register for this event. All senior VCAL students are required

to register and the registration fee contributes to the group’s overall fundraising to-

tal. The activities that students organise to raise funds and the organisation of the

event itself meet several outcomes in the Personal Development Skills course.

Who needs a new device for 2017? ● All students will be required to use a device as part of their learning at Berwick College. Students have

access to digital classroom activities, curriculum, our online communication systems as well as timetables and homework information.

What is happening in 2017? ● The College is moving to a BYOD program for students in Years 10-12 as an extension to the Year 7- 9 iPad

program. Parents will now have a range of devices at different price points to choose from. The JB Hi-Fi BYOD portal, login ‘BC2017’ has a number of devices listed appropriate for the College’s network which has a Wi-Fi operating speed of 5 GHz.

What will happen to the existing IPAD device Year 7-9? ● The iPad will continue to be suitable as a device for students moving from Year 9 into Year 10 however,

the purchase of a Bluetooth keyboard is recommended. What software and administration access will be available?

    ● Students will continue to use their devices for the submission of work through ‘Edmodo’, email etc. In 2017 it is the College’s intention to use ‘Google Docs’ as a cloud based share platform where students can store work and access it from home, provided there is access to a Wi-Fi network.

Students in Senior School will now have the majority of their curriculum delivered electronically and use the device to access ‘Edrolo’; an on line VCE tutorial program aimed at giving students wider access to the top tutors in their given subjects, with up to date resources, activities, tests, practice exams and discus-sion forums.

Why is this change taking place? ● Berwick College believes that Senior School parents should have a choice in the type of device that their

child brings to school, and we have identified a range of devices that allow for price, performance and reliability dependent upon their child’s course requirements.

    ● Having access to a reliable device allows our students to not only participate in the evolving digital ele-ments of education but to develop digital literacy and 21st Century work skills.

Where can the device be purchased? ● The College has worked with JB Hi-Fi Education to create a portal that allows Parents / Carers to see the

types of devices that are suitable for a range of courses/ needs in the senior years. This was done with the intention of the identified devices being robust enough to withstand the rigours of school life. (The device does not have to be purchased from JB Hi-Fi as long its Wi –Fi operating speed is 5 GHz.) As with all devices the purchase of a suitable protective case is recommended.
