DOUBLE GOLD JACKET RECIEPENTS At last Friday’s Assembly 2 students were presented with Double Gold Jackets. The first student is a true all-rounder and a quiet achiever who excels both academically and in sport. A warm, dedicated and friendly student, this person is a respectful and diligent learner who is well liked by both her peers and her teachers. She has participated over the years in ANZAC marches, helping at primary school carnivals and more recently, with fundraising. Carley Graham, is a committed student, who has performed consistently throughout her school years, and continues to show dedication to her studies in her HSC year. She is a school Prefect and an excellent sportsperson, who has represented Leeton High School across a variety of sports, including athletics and cross country. She particularly excels at netball, where she played for the school each year from U'15's through to the Senior Team. Carley was part of the Opens Team that were Riverina Champions in 2017 who then travelled to Sydney to compete in the State Knock Out Finals. She is a determined and highly skilled athlete who is always positive in her approach. She has assisted with refereeing at carnivals for the school both at a secondary and primary level. The second student receiving their Double Gold Jacket is equally deserving; a fantastic student who has made an excellent contribution to Leeton High School. A keen sportsperson and an academic achiever who gives their best in all areas of schooling life, this student is mature, friendly, and well-liked by both teachers and students. She is a consistent and focused learner who has performed well in all aspects of her HSC so far. Riley Cowling, is an excellent student, who shows maturity and commitment across all areas. In classes, she consistently performs at her best, and seeks feedback from her teachers in order to continue to improve her results. A keen sportsperson, Riley has contributed to Leeton High School in a number of sports throughout the years, including playing in the Leeton High girls’ cricket team for the past 5 years. She always gives 100% and is a reliable and selfless team member. In other areas, Riley has contributed to our school by participating in fundraising, helping out with junior sports carnivals, and participating in ANZAC marches. Both these students are very deserving recipients of this Double Gold Jacket.

MUSIC/ CAPA NEWS TERM 3 Welcome back to what will be a MASSIVE term! To kick things off – the Choir and Uke Group will compete in the 2018 Leeton Eisteddfod on Tuesday 31/7/18. With different groups competing in 8 sections, we’re sure to have success. Mrs Goman is also competing in a huge number of sections this year so best of luck to the many hardworking dancers at this year’s Eisteddfod. In week 3, the Choir will perform in KROP at Griffith Regional Theatre. With rehearsals and 3 shows over two days, it’s sure to be a cracker. The choir has worked hard to put together a highly engaging, fun filled and completely entertaining piece that will open each show. Limited tickets are still available from the theatre.

On Monday 13th August, Year 12 Music and Drama students will perform at HSC Performance Night in Rm 14 and Rm 12. Parents and friends are invited to attend and view some of the performances our students have been working on for their HSC. Speaking of HSC – the final practical exams for HSC Music and Drama are scheduled for the last 4 weeks of term so spare a thought for the students and teachers involved in this process!

On Wednesday 29th August, LHS will be on with Leeton Idol again forming the afternoon entertainment. Will Chevaughn Moore and Emily Jennings scoop the pool again? Will Braith and Gus (the back-stagers who are really wannabe performers) remember to get all the equipment on and off stage? And will VDH and Crossley take out the Staff Trophy for the third year running and will DiSalvia and Morschel incur another noise complaint with what they think is ‘music’? Only time will tell! Nominations for Idol will be available from the English/CAPA staffroom or Music Room from Wednesday Week 2. The big ticket item this term is undoubtedly Shine. The bi-annual performance spectacular presented by the Leeton Community of Public Schools in the MPC is going to be a show-stopper so keep an eye out for tickets available at schools soon. Performance dates are Wednesday and Thursday 5-6th September. LHS has 4 items in Music, Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre so come along and see what public education schools are all about! Schools Spectacular is also approaching in Term 4. Preparations are well underway for this event. This year, LHS will take its biggest ever contingent of students in Choir, Dance, State Dance and for the first time ever, Drama! We have stacks of fundraising initiatives going including a Cookie Dough Drive (order forms are attached to this weeks newsletter) and Return and Earn. In Week 10 we will be holding Taco Tuesday at school and first week back next term, our annual Trivioke Night will be on again in the MPC. For more details regarding any of these events or fundraising activities jump onto Facebook and like our Leeton High School Creative and Performing Arts Page! Enjoy all of our amazing events this term!

MACQUARIE

University

Macquarie University LEAP (Learning Education Aspiration Participation) team brought a taste of University life to Leeton High School on Thursday 26th July. Year 10 and year 11 students participated in the day where they experienced many aspects of University. Students were fortunate to hear from The Pro Vice Chancellor Sean Brawley, who presented a guest lecture on the ‘ins and outs’ of University. He touched on the benefits of going to university, the many different pathways into university and the importance of seeing themselves as much more than their ATAR. Students were split into groups where they attended 7 different faculty sessions. These included:

Gallipoli in a day

Economics

Indigenious Science

Museum of Ancient cultures

Uni life – living on campus

A day in the life of a Uni student

Dunmore Lang college – Accommodation

Lunch was provided to all students by Macquarie University and many thanks to the LHS Canteen who provided a wonderful spread of fresh sandwiches, wraps, fruit platters, cakes and slices which were appreciated by the students. On Friday morning the LEAP team hosted a breakfast at CRATE CAFÉ where parents and students in Year 11 were welcome to speak to the staff about University Life, entry programs, pathways and support options. Hosting this event will hopefully allow our students more understanding of university life and give them more options on what they are planning to study in the future.
