SUMMER SNEAK PEEK WHO WE ARE The Center for Gifted Studies was established in 1979 through the efforts of Dr. Frances A. Karnes to bring the educational needs of gifted students in Mississippi to the forefront of educational policy development through advocacy, research, and provision of services for high-ability students. Almost 40 years later, the Center is still consistently a frontrunner in the development of enrichment and talent development programs and considered as one of the Southeast’s most prominent and effective leaders in gifted education. Our central purpose is to further the education of gifted students and those with leadership abilities through teaching, research and service. PARENTS, GUARDIANS, CAREGIVERS AND EDUCATORS This pamphlet provides an overview of the tentative dates programs are offered in summer 2018. Here you will find a general description of each program, requirements for entry, and requirements for applying for scholarships (limited number available). Applications are online at usm.edu/karnes-gifted. KALEIDOSCOPE The Center welcomes students of varying gifts and talents to participate in digital and real-world opportunities for connecting with one another without the barrier of distance. New events, activities and opportunities will be shared through our website, on Facebook, and in our mail outs. Look for monthly art and essay competitions that you can use in your classroom! DAY PROGRAM FOR YOUNG GIF TED STUDENTS JUNE 18-2 2, 2018The Day Program for Young Gifted Students is a one-week, half-day, non-residential program, designed for intellectually gifted students in grades pre-K through 3 (ages 4-9). The program is designed for intellectually gifted students with intelligence quotients of 121 or above on an individually administered IQ test. Alternately, students may provide scores at the 91st percentile or above on a nationally normed achievement test. This program enhances the cognitive abilities of gifted students through planned enrichment, hands-on learning, and acceleration activities. Content areas are combined with processing skills to enable students to explore a wide variety of topics. Instructional activities will be conducted in classrooms and laboratories on campus. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

SUMMER GIF TED STUDIES PROGRAM JUNE 24 -29, 2018The Summer Gifted Studies Program, a one-week residential program, is designed for intellectually gifted students in grades 4-8 with intelligence quotients of 121 or above on an individually administered IQ test. Alternately, students may provide scores at the 91st percentile or above on a nationally normed achievement test. Students can choose from a variety of academic topics designed to challenge and enlighten the gifted. This program enhances the cognitive abilities of gifted students through planned enrichment and acceleration activities, while connecting students with a community of like-minded peers.

LE ADERSHIP STUDIES: JUNE 3-8, 2018The Leadership Studies Program develops leadership skills over the course of three summers. The program begins with an introduction into leadership, then advances to situational leadership with an emphasis on team management skills, and concludes with a focus on entrepreneurship and leadership qualities for the 21st century. Each program is a one-week residential program designed for students who are in enrolled in grades 6-11 during the 2017-18 school year and have a desire to develop and enhance their leadership abilities. As part of each course, students have the opportunity to engage with area leaders at the culminating Professional Leadership Breakfast. This annual formal event is held at the conclusion of the program. Area dignitaries will be in attendance to provide insight, feedback and mentoring opportunities to students.

SUMMER PROGRAM FOR ACADEMICALLY TALENTED YOUTH: JULY 8-2 7, 2018The Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth, a three-week residential program, is designed for students who are enrolled in grades 7-11 during the 2017-18 school year and qualify based on ACT or SAT test results. A variety of intensive, fast-paced courses are available. Past courses have included mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and modern analysis), human anatomy and physiology, forensic science, polymer science, psychology, creative writing and debate. The program is designed to include appropriate academic, cultural and recreational experiences. The University of Southern Mississippi offers the program through cooperative efforts with the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Tuition includes the instructional program, access to textbooks, room and board, recreational activities and limited accident insurance.

Programs for Gifted Leaders and Academically Talented Students in Middle and High School

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMSStudents will be housed in dormitories on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. Tuition includes room, board, recreational activities, and limited accident insurance.
