Choosing a headshot for your babies audition is not

always an easy task. All parents think every picture of

their child is beautiful. When choosing a picture for

an audition, there are a few things to keep in mind.

•Make sure the picture is up-to-date. Do not show up to

an audition with a

picture of a 3 month old baby and now your child is 8

months.

•Professional pictures are best. Some parents do not want

to invest money in professional pictures.

•If you do not have professional pictures made, make sure

you have a photo that showcases your child’s features

and personality.

•Headshots should be facing the camera, or looking up at

the camera. Do not bring side images of the face as

shown in the 3rd picture to the right.

•Have plenty of copies of one picture. Do not use multiple

pictures as a headshot. Stay consistent. That is how

casting directors will get to know you!

Save Money :

•You do not need to spend $400 dollars to have great

headshots taken.

•Check out photographers season specials and ask

them to take headshots for you!

1. Shoot during golden hour. (Right before or during sunset) 2. If you have to shoot during the mid-day sun use shade to your advantage. 3. Watch for shadows on the face. 4. Spend time observing light. Photography is all about capturing light and the best way to learn how to use natural light is learning to recognize it. Go out at different times of day and look at the light and the way it affects objects and people at those times. One of the best ways to learn would be watching films. 5. Get catchlights! Catchlights in your clients eyes can completely change a photo. Catchlights are those little flecks of light that are captured reflected in someone’s eye. 6. Be flexible with your posing. Using natural light means that the perfect pose might not always be perfect due to the light and it means you’ll have to be flexible and prepared to move and change your clients according to the light. 7. Don’t reschedule on cloudy days. Clouds create natural diffused light and almost act as natural soft boxes so this can enable you to work easily without having to avoid certain situations. 8. Be aware of natural reflectors. A big white building in a photo can act as a reflector and will reflect white light onto its surroundings. This also means that other buildings and objects can act as reflectors and give you color casts in your photos. 9. Focus on the face first and foremost. The first thing I check before pressing that shutter button is my subject’s face. You’ll be able to best gage the lighting situation from there. If you see harsh shadows, squinting, color cast or other oddities then you know you need to change something. 10. There is no ‘correct’ exposure. Photography is about style. It’s okay to experiment with different exposures instead of trying to get that perfectly exposed one.

It is very important that with modeling, as well as many other extra-curricular activities that you have your children do, that your children ENJOY it! Nothing is worse than a someone that has the potential to be, “America’s Next Top Model” giving up as a child because they are being forced. Many kids love to be in front of the camera and will eat up positive attention if you give it to them, however if your child is one who pouts or covers their face when they even see you glance at them with a camera in your hand, there is a need for a change in activities. You can not make your child love to model because you wish your parents would have made you model! If they are old enough to tell you whether they want to or not, make sure you ask. Although, it is important to keep them active, so if modeling is one of those positive ways, always keep it fun and friendly! Make sure to take a break on occasion and ALWAYS ask your child if they want to continue modeling when they are old enough to speak for them self.

Of course it okay for your child to have a bad day or a sick day and on these days it is very important for you to let your child know that we can always finish on another day, so that they feel like they are not in a situation to where they are pressured to be modeling. A happy child makes for perfect pictures and here at PCMM, we love happy children!

If your child is too young to decide for themselves than use your best judgment! However, if your child is old enough to speak for themselves then ask these few questions and if the answer is yes to each question, pageants may be right for you!
