FROM PAGE 1“The situation has been very difficult for meconsidering my disability, however, I mustmention that being disabled has not limit-ed me in any way at all.

“I run a small welding business and thathelps put bread on my family’s table. I ama hard working citizen of Mandeni and themayor himself can testify to that,” Sikha-khane said.

He said that people and governmentshould stop feeling sorry for people livingwith disabilities and seek alternative waysto help small businesses prosper so thatdisabled people can provide for their ownfamilies.

“There are many skilled artisans withdisabilities who lack facilities for their dayto day operations and we are urging themunicipality to assist us.”

He also thanked ward 13 for giving disa-bled people equal opportunities to partici-pate in local government development.

His new neighbours, who gatheredaround the yard to witness the official hand-over were also excited for Sikhakhane.

At the hand-over Zulu said the mainobjective of the initiative was to inspireindividuals to take action to help changethe world for the better.

“Ultimately it seeks to empower ward13 and other communities everywhere to

take action and inspire change.“Small businesses have a major role to

play in the South African economy in termsof employment creation, income genera-tion and output growth.

“The small business sector plays a cru-cial role in people’s efforts to meet basicneeds and help marginalised groups likefemale headed households, disabled peo-ple and rural families,”said Zulu.

“We thank everyone who participatedin making sure that this house is renovatedand cleaned and that Musa and his familyhave a home.

“A united community like Mandenitakes care of it people....” said Zulu.

HOT SAMA winning soul-jazz-house trio MiCasa will perform live at Hotshots in Ton-gaat on Saturday, March 1.

Mi Casa Music was formed in early 2011inJohannesburgwhenallthreefuturemem-bers were at a night lounge and decided toperform together. A few months later, theyreleased an album titled Mi Casa Music, which "went gold" quickly and won severalawardsatthe18thAnnualMTNSouthAfricaMusic Awards in 2012.

The band received a lot of attention fromthe public in late 2011. Their hit single "TheseStreets" was taken from the album MicasaMusic which showcased the unique urbanjazz sound of the band. It was not long be-fore the band was on every major South Afri-can radio and music video chart at number1, where it remained for weeks. The bandwent on to open for a number of major inter-national acts, including The Layabouts, ReelPeople, Tortured Soul, and YMCMB hip-hopand rhythm-and-blues sensation Drake(entertainer).

Their second single from the album,Heavenly Sent, also made every majorSouth African radio and music video chart, and earned them South African MusicAwards (SAMA) nominations for "Best

Dance Album", "Album Of The Year","Group Of The Year", "Newcomer Of TheYear", and "Record Of The Year". Mi Casa'sNewcomer of the Year nomination was metwith controversy when some people men-tioned that the group's producer, Dr. Duda, was clearly not a new artist.

The band went on to release their thirdsingle, "La Vida", which included a 3-D ani-mated music video. This track was remixedby British house producer Atjazz.

Doors open at 8pm. For tickets contactDonoven on 072 913 7798 or Johnny on 0824399 355.

Uniforms forless fortunate>> Pupils from poverty-riddled area are on the receiving endJYOTHI LALDAS

KWAZULU-NATAL Legislaturespeaker Lydia Johnson handedover 128 school uniforms to

pupils from Ezimpondweni PrimarySchool in Ndwedwe last week.

The school is situated in a remoterural village inNdwedwe, where pov-erty levels are high.Of the 148 pupils, 128 received schooluniforms through the speaker’s socialresponsibility programme.

The programme is an initiative oftheKZNLegislatureSpeakership, withwhich Johnson helps communitiesthat are in dire need of certain servic-es.

It has made a number of interven-tions throughout the province, includ-ing the distribution of hundreds ofmobile sciencekits, mobile libraries toschools, and seeds and agriculturalimplements to scores of women con-trolled co-operatives in rural areas.

Johnson said her office will alsotry and assist the children who didnot receive uniforms at the hand-over.

“The reason why the other 20 chil-dren did not get the uniforms was be-cause when the request was made forour intervention last year, there wereonly 128 pupils in this school. Webrought the uniforms for those 128 asper last year’s request, only to findthat the school had taken anaddition-al 20 pupils,” said Johnson.

School principal M Simelane saidit has always been “painful” for himto see young children walking longdistances in winter, barefoot.

“Besides that, this visit has put ourschoolonthemap. It is going to restoreself esteem to the pupils. They willfeel proud of themselves again andhopefully perform even better aca-demically,” said Simelane.

Most of the pupils are orphanedwhile others live in child-headedhouseholds.One pupil, Xolani Mbhense, who is in

grade three and was accompanied byhis grandmother, said both his par-ents died when he was very young.

“We are surviving on my grand-mother’s pension. Shehas been tryingto get us a child support grant withoutanysuccess.Theclerksneedmoredoc-uments that we don’t have. We areverygrateful to theSpeakerof theKZNLegislature,” said Mbhense.

THE Christian Community Minis-tries (CCM) in KwaDukuza will behosting the CANSA Shavathon2014 at the Stanger Super Sparcomplex on Saturday, 1 March, from 8am to 5pm.

The community is urged to sup-port the event by having theirheads shaved or sprayed for a do-nation of R50 per adult or R25 forchildren under the age of 13.

One of the event organisers, Ste-phen Naidoo, said this is a way toshow solidarity or support forthose touched by cancer, as losinghair is a common side effect ofcancer therapy.

“Participants show support bydonating a fee to shave or colour-spray hair, with some using thefun stencil shapes such as a star, butterfly, flower, soccer ball, light-ning bolt and the word warrior.

“A new addition from 2013 isthe colorful gels that have provenpopular with children. The dona-tion is used by CANSA to provide aservice to the public and all peopleaffected by cancer,” said Naidoo.

All funds raised are used tocontinue assisting CANSA with de-livering their unique, integratedservice to the public.

Naidoo added they will alsohave volunteers calling at businesshouses to enable them to support

the event as they understand busi-ness people and their staff are un-able to leave their businesses andcome to the shopping centres tosupport the event.

“Shavathon is a time to honourthose fighting cancer and also tohonour loved ones who havepassed on.

“For some it is an emotionalmoment of quiet reflection, havingtheir hair shaved in remembranceof those who are touched by can-cer, loved ones lost and people theydon't even know.

“For others, especially the kids,it is a fun and colourful way ofraising funds and showing solidar-ity with the millions of South Afri-cans touched by cancer.

“Everybody knows somebodywho has been affected by cancerin some way. Shavathon gives youthe opportunity to help us fightcancer in a substantial and memo-rable way. We also appeal to any-one who would like to assist tocontact CCM as we need more vol-unteers.”

WORLD CancerDay was acknowledgedat Hirsch Ballito recently with a coffeemorning and guest speaker, JaimeErnst, who heads up the Ballito CancerSupport Network.

Ernst gave an update on cancer treat-ment and the importance of early detec-tion – and prevention.

“People have got to be a lot moreproactive with regards to taking care ofthemselves and their families.

“Staying out of the sun to avoid thepossibility of skin cancer and developingmelanomas, eating correctly, regular ex-ercise and having regular health checks– all very important in the prevention ofthis dreaded disease,” said Ernst.

A breakthrough and revolution incancer treatment was published recent-ly in the Washington based Journal ofScience. It discussed the harnessing ofthebody’sownimmunedefencestoelimi-nate tumours.

“Cancer immunotherapy marks aturning point in cancer because it is sodifferent to conventional forms of tu-mour therapy, and this year saw encour-agingresultsfromsomeofthefirstclinicaltrials of drug treatments based on thisrevolutionary approach,” said Science.

I ONCE worked with a man so short, creepy and conniving that he was nick-named ‘The Poison Dwarf’.

I believe he is still in a position of au-thority today, where he verbally molestsfemale colleagues and takes credit forthe work of juniors.

How this toad made it to manage-ment is a tale that should probably

end up in novella form – but he is sucha professionally inconsequential piece oftoast-sweat that no one would botherwriting it.

The image this festering rectum hasof himself is one that is vastly superior tothe image others have of him. While hebelieves he is the town messiah, col-leagues in particular see him as thevillage idiot.

My professional time in the companyof The Poison Dwarf was thankfullylimited, but it made me painfully awarethat unless you are self-employed, youwill have to answer to someone whohas the potential to be an intellectualand ethical sphincter.

And of course even if you are anentrepreneur, you may find yourself

adopting the behaviour of a sphincter, which means you are the cretin in thisscenario.

In preparation for the piece you arereading, which was inspired by a letterfrom a reader, I sent out the ‘column bat-signal’ to a few friends and colleagueswho rated the following traits as onesthat would render you or me (or them)horrible bosses:

It seems the highest scoring quality ofa HB is someone who is intellectually dis-enfranchised.

Thus, if you are unable to lead a teambecause you aren’t quite sharp enough -yet you think you are the lost offspringof Einstein - your colleagues will probablytreat you like that kid we all once knewin Special Class back in the pre politically

correct 80s: Suspiciously, pitifully andwith thinly veiled disdain.

Second on the list of less than noblequalities HBs usually possess is takingcredit for work that isn’t theirs. Thisusually entails the HB feigning humilitywhile explaining to their own boss howthey are the sole driving force behindyour success...and the rising and settingof the sun.

Next on the list is, to quote a col-league, “Someone who passes the buckwhen the sh*t hits the fan”.

In other words, if you have instructeda subordinate to do something and yourinstruction falls foul of policy, it is yourfault, not the subordinate’s. Letting thestaff member take the proverbial fall onyour behalf shows a lack of character.

Sexual harassment ranked highly onthe rating system for HBs, according tofemale respondents. Keep your profes-

sional life tidy. If you can’t, resign beforeyou are fired.

Indecisiveness, favouritism, poor fol-low-through, bad planning, lack of sup-port and a slow turnaround time in an-swering colleagues’ requests also madethe list. Your subordinate’s time is justas precious and limited as yours.

The more astute reader may have no-ticed that money has not made it ontothe list; which falls in line with muchresearch done on the topic of fulfilledstaff. While salary certainly is and shouldbe an issue if you are paid poorly, mostemployees are looking for respect, appre-ciation, support and leadership.

If you are unable to offer these things, you may be a horrible boss, or at least bein the running to become one.

Or, worse, you may be subjectingyourself to the future rant of a columnistwho once worked with or for you.

Horrible bosses 2.0

DESIREE ERASMUS

WE read with despair that Ballito is onceagain being targeted by opportunistswho take advantage of our small but

rapidly growing community. Our understanding is that the Urban

Improvement Project is being initiatedand driven by a one-man band who hasthe support of the Chamber of Com-merce.

This means we as ratepayers arebeing forced into paying extra levies to

supplement municipal services through abusiness venture that presents high-riskwith no proper support structure or anyguarantees.

This concept is nothing new and hasworked in some areas and failed in oth-ers.

We are also led to believe that this in-

dustry has evolved considerably from thedated model being proposed.

Ballito is very different to Umhlangaand we as prudent ratepayers should ex-plore alternative options before plun-ging headfirst into another shamproject.

Anyone wanting extra security and

willing to pay the extra levies can gladlymove onto one of the many residentialestates on the North Coast.

According to reports, the local busi-ness owners and residents have alreadypaid R360 000, and what have we got toshow for it?

GOOD,bad, highdensity, lowdensity? What is cholesterol exactly and whyis it such a health issue? What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, fattysubstancemadenaturallyinthebody, and we need a certain amount be-cause it'svital for the formationofcellstructures, hormones and substanc-es that aid digestion.

The body makes most of the cho-lesterol it needs. But cholesterol is al-so found in some animal food prod-ucts, and consuming too many cancontribute to blood cholesterol be-coming dangerously high.

Some people have a heriditarycondition where their bodies maketoo much cholesterol.“Good” and “bad” cholesterol

There are basically two kinds ofcholesterol:1“Good” or HDL cholesterol (the fulltermisHighDensityLipoproteincho-lesterol). HDL cholesterol is some-times called “good” because it helpsremovecholesterol fromthearteries, the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from your heart to thebody’s cells.2“Bad”orLDLcholesterol(LowDensi-

ty Lipoprotein cholesterol). LDL cho-lesterol is sometimescalled“bad”be-cause high levels are linked to build-up in your arteries.Ahelpfulwaytorememberthediffer-ence between HDL and LDL:YouwantHDLcholesterol levelstobeHIGH.YouwantLDLcholesterol levels tobeLOW.

Total cholesterol is a measure of thetotal amount of cholesterol in yourblood, including both LDL and HDLcholesterol. What is high cholesterol?

Highcholesterol iswhenyouhavetoomuch cholesterol in your blood. Itmay also be called high blood choles-terol, hypercholesterolemia or hy-perlipidemia.

Your total cholesterol or LDL cho-lesterolmaybe toohigh, or yourHDLcholesterol too low.

Themost important effect of highcholesterol is that it can cause nar-rowing andblockages in the arteries.

Excesscholesterol,andothersub-stances normally found in the bloodlike calciumand fat, can start to buildup just under the lining of arterywalls.

Theareasof thearterywallwherecholesterol and other matter collectsare called “plaques”.

Theformationofplaquesinthear-teries isaconditioncalledatheroscle-rosis, arteriosclerosis or “hardeningof the arteries”.How arteriosclerosis progresses

Over time, the plaques get harderandnarrowthearteriesfurther, limit-ing blood flow and damaging the ar-tery wall. The rougher the plaquesmakethearterylining, themorelikelysubstanceslikeplatelets, whichmakethebloodstickyandpromoteclotting, will also get trapped there.

If narrowing occurs in the coro-nary arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself, the condition is called coronary ar-

BEFORE the discovery of Helicobacter(H.) pylori, it was generally thought that

the stomach was a sterile environment. And that peptic ulcers were largely

caused by lifestyle choices and circumstanc-es.

Smokers, people from a socio-economi-cally-disadvantaged background and peo-

in the first place. The discovery of helicobacter pylori

In the early 1980s, two Australian doctors,Warren and Marshall, found a bacteriumthat lived in the lower half of the stomach. This bacterium had found a way of con-cealing itself in the stomach lining in sucha way, that it could not be attacked anddestroyed like other bacteria that found itsway into the stomach.

They were unsure whether the bacteri-al infection caused the gastritis or whetherthe gastritis allowed the infection to flour-ish. Dr Marshall infected himself with thebacteria, developed gastritis, and thencured himself with a course of antibiotics. This proved that the bacteria caused thegastritis.

This bacteria was always associatedwith a microscopic inflammation of thestomach lining, called gastritis.

This bacteria has since been associatedwith chronic gastritis, active chronic duo-denitis, duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcer-ation. It also strongly linked to stomachcancer.

Initially this bacteria was calledCampylobacter Pylori, but was recently re-named Helicobacter pylori. A particularlyvirulent strain of H.pylori is known as cyto-toxin-associated gene A (cag A). Thiscauses damage severe enough to produceprecancerous changes.

Infection and lifestyle trigger peptic ulcersFurther research has found that as much as

40 percent of the population have the infec-tion in their stomachs. Many of those remainunaffected, but 10 percent of those harbouringthe infection go on to develop peptic ulcers. It is thought that ulcers are triggered in thisgroup by a number of factors, such as chronicstress, genetics, smoking and coffee-drinking.

How does the infection spread? This infection is most often found in people

who live in confined spaces with many others. The infection is present in saliva and is thoughtto be in faeces too. Obviously, good personalhygiene is important in preventing the spread-ing of this infection. It is also found more oftenin people over the age of 65 and the reasonfor this is thought to be that many of themwere infected as a result of living conditionsduring the Second World War.

The consequences of the infectionMost people harbouring this infection will suf-fer no ill effects throughout their lives. Ten per-cent of them, however, will go on to developpeptic ulcers. It is not known exactly what trig-gers this.

When the infection is present, it causes thestomach to produce more acid and the stom-ach lining to become thinner, allowing acid topenetrate.

H. pylori infection does not cause heart-burn or GORD and in some patients it appearsto protect against some of the symptoms of

Peptic ulcers previously were largely believed to be caused by lifestyle choices and circumstances.

The real cause of stomach ulcers>> The discovery of the bacteria called helicobacter pylori led to great changes in the treatment of peptic ulcers.

these two conditions. Itis not yet fully under-stood why this hap-pens. It is also not yetclear which role, if any,the infection plays inthe development ofstomach cancer.

The discovery ofthese bacteria certainlychanged the way doc-tors treat pepticulcers.

A short course of anti-biotics, instead of acid-reducing medication, has become the norm.It should be noted, though, that lifestylechanges are still impor-tant in peoplewho have peptic ulcers,as unhealthy habitscan trigger peptic ul-cers,whentheinfectionis present.

It is very easy tobecome re-infectedwith H. pylori.

All about Attention Deficit

HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER>> No single test can diagnose a child as having ADHDADVERTORIAL

ATTENTION deficit hyperactivity dis-order (ADHD) is one of the mostcommon childhood disorders and

can continue through adolescence andadulthood. Symptoms include difficultystaying focused and paying attention, dif-ficulty controlling behavior, and hyperac-tivity (over-activity).ADHD has three subtypes:Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive>>Most symptoms (six or more) are in thehyperactivity-impulsivity categories.>>Fewer than six symptoms of inatten-tion are present, although inattention maystill be present to some degree.Predominantly inattentive>>The majority of symptoms (six or more)are in the inattention category and fewerthan six symptoms of hyperactivity-impul-sivity are present, although hyperactivity-impulsivity may still be present to somedegree.>>Children with this subtype are less likelyto act out or have difficulties getting alongwith other children. They may sit quietly, but they are not paying attention to whatthey are doing. Therefore, the child may beoverlooked, and parents and teachers maynot notice that he or she has ADHD.Combined hyperactive-impulsiveand inattentive>>Six or more symptoms of inattentionand six or more symptoms of hyperactivi-ty-impulsivity are present.>>Most children have the combined typeof ADHD.CausesScientists are not sure what causes ADHD,although many studies suggest that genesplay a large role. Like many other illnesses,ADHD probably results from a combina-tion of factors. In addition to genetics, re-searchers are looking at possible environ-mental factors, and are studying how braininjuries, nutrition, and the social environ-ment might contribute to ADHD.Signs and SymptomsInattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivityare the key behaviors of ADHD. It is normalfor all children to be inattentive, hyperac-tive, or impulsive sometimes, but for chil-dren with ADHD, these behaviors are moresevere and occur more often. To be diag-nosed with the disorder, a child must havesymptoms for 6 or more months and to adegree that is greater than other childrenof the same age.Children who have symptoms of inat-

tention may:>>Be easily distracted, miss details, forgetthings, and frequently switch from one ac-tivity to another.>>Have difficulty focusing on one thing.>>-Become bored with a task after onlya few minutes, unless they are doing some-thing enjoyable.>>Have difficulty focusing attention onorganising and completing a task or learn-ing something new.>>Have trouble completing or turning inhomework assignments, often losingthings (e.g., pencils, toys, assignments)needed to complete tasks or activities.>>Not seem to listen when spoken to.>>Daydream, become easily confused, and move slowly.>>Have difficulty processing informationas quickly and accurately as others.>>Struggle to follow instructions.Children who have symptoms of hy-peractivity may:>>Fidget and squirm in their seats.>>Talk nonstop.>>Dash around, touching or playing withanything and everything in sight.>>Have trouble sitting still during dinner, school, and story time.

may think that children with the hyperac-tiveandimpulsivesubtypesjusthaveemo-tional or disciplinary problems.Diagnosis

No single test can diagnose a child ashaving ADHD. Instead, a licensed healthprofessional needs to gather informationabout the child, and his or her behavior andenvironment. A family may want to firsttalk with the child's pediatrician, who mayalso seek input from a mental health spe-cialist with experience in childhood mentaldisorders such as ADHD. The pediatricianor mental health specialist will first try torule out other possibilities for the symp-toms. For example, certain situations, events, or health conditions may causetemporary behaviors in a child that seemlike ADHD.Between them, the referring pedia-trician and specialist will determineif a child:

>>Is experiencing undetected seizuresthat could be associated with other medi-cal conditions.

>>Has a middle ear infection that iscausing hearing problems.

>>Has any undetected hearing or vi-sion problems.

>>Has any medical problems that af-fect thinking and behavior.

>>Has any learning disabilities.>>Has anxiety or depression, or other

psychiatric problems that might cause AD-HD-like symptoms.

>>Has been affected by a significantand sudden change, such as the death ofa family member, a divorce, or parent's jobloss.

A specialist will also check school andmedical records for clues, to see if thechild's home or school settings appear un-usually stressful or disrupted, and gatherinformation from the child's parents and

teachers. Coaches, babysitters, and otheradults who know the child well also maybe consulted.

The specialist pays close attention tothe child's behavior during different situa-tions. Some situations are highly struc-tured, some have less structure. Otherswould require the child to keep paying at-tention.

Finally, if after gathering all this infor-mation the child meets the criteria for AD-HD, he or she will be diagnosed with thedisorder.

For further information, contact Dr Stri-ni Chetty on 032 55 22 911.

>>Be constantly in motion.>>Have difficulty doing quiettasks or activities.Children who have symptomsof impulsivity may:>>Be very impatient.>>Blurt out inappropriate com-ments, show their emotions with-out restraint, and act without re-gard for consequences. -Have diffi-culty waiting for things they wantor waiting their turns in games.>>Often interrupt conversationsor others' activities.ADHD can be mistaken for otherproblemsParents and teachers can miss thefact that children with symptomsof inattention have the disorderbecause they are often quiet andless likely to act out. They may sitquietly, seeming to work, but theyare often not paying attention towhat they are doing. They may getalong well with other children, compared with those with the oth-er subtypes, who tend to have so-cial problems. But children with theinattentive kind of ADHD are notthe only ones whose disorders canbe missed. For example, adults
