Black magic, voodoo dollsand extortionTwo KwaDukuza residents arrested for “elaborate con”
MERVYN KRISHNA
BLACK magic, voodoodolls, blackmail and ex-tortion were some of the
“scare tactics” used by twoKwaDukuzacon-artiststofright-en prominent business peopleand individual into parting withlarge sums of cash.
Ayesha Khan (54) of SollyStreet, Oceanview and MukeshSingh (38) of Freezia Road,Stanger Manor teamed up inwhat has turned out to be ama-jor scam, with more peoplecoming forward claiming tohave been swindled out of thou-sands of rands by the pair.
Khan and Singh, who alleg-edly posed as spiritual healersthat “remove” black magic fromhomes and businesses, were ar-restedonThursday last week byN-Force Security directorNitesh
Arjun and handed over to theKwaDukuza SAPS.
They appeared in theKwaDukuza Magistrate’s Courton Friday on charges of theft byfalse pretenses. Both were re-leased on bail and will maketheir next court appearance onDecember 10.
According to several busi-ness owners and individualswho were swindled, the pairused the same modus operandi.
Once they had identified richbusiness people and individu-als, Singh would hatch thescheme by planting a voodoodoll on the premises of the tar-geted victims, who were knownto him.
According to Arjun, Singhwould set out, usually at around3am to place the doll completewith needles, pins, ashes andred cloth at the home.
“Black cloth and other para-phernalia were thrown in foradded effect.
“Terrified victims wouldwake up to what they believedwas evil black magic on theirdoorstep and desperately seekhelp to be rid of it.”
According to local business-man Amrasen Govender, heknew Singh because theyplayed badminton together.
“He was unemployed andasked me to help find him a job.I spoke to a friendwho agreed togive Singh a job. However, notlong after his appointment, myfriend found a nutmeg with aneedle pierced in it, togetherwith ashes, placed on his chair,”said Govender.
He said his friend was upsetand shaken after the incident.

A STATE prosecutor cautioned themagistrate at the Durban High Courton Monday against granting bail tofour suspects allegedly involved inthe Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuzaTaxi Association violence that tookplace last month in Shakaskraal.
The state contended that grantingbail could pose a danger to society anddefeat the ends of justice.
According to National ProsecutingAuthority spokeswoman NatashaRamkissonKara, when passing judgement as to why bail was being opposed, the magistrate said: “As wespeak now, there is still no calm in thearea between the two associations.
“The accused are members of oneof the associations while the deceased are of the other association.Granting them bail would mean givingliberty for both Associations to go on
with the ongoing feud which may result in more deaths, thereby frustrating the court process.”
RamkissonKara said the magistrate also noted that the issue was ofpublic interest and it was advisablethat suspects be remanded in prisonuntil its finality.
Justice Mthethwa, Mthunzi Mathenjwa, Dumisani Sikhakhane andMbhekiseni Luthuli are accused of killing taxi boss Dennis Mhlongo and hisdriver Khulekani Mdletshe.
Luthuli, Mthethwa and Mathenjwawere arrested on the day of the killingin Durban and charged with twocounts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession ofunlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Sikhakhane was arrested a weekafter and was found in possession ofa 9mm pistol with 13 live rounds.
The case was remanded to 11 December.

SOLIDARITY against apartheidactually started in Groutville, said University of KwaZulu-Na-
tal (UKZN) vice chancellor, former na-tional parliament speaker and strug-gle stalwart Dr Frene Ginwala at theUnited Congregational Church inGroutville on Friday.
The visit was part of a memorialand wreath-laying ceremony to cele-brate struggle leader andNobel PeacePrize laureate Chief Albert Luthuli, who died in 1967. He andmembers ofhis family are buried at the church, only a stones’ throw from his 1927home, now a museum, in Groutville.
The event also formed part of theseventh Albert Luthuli Annual Memo-rial Lecture that took place on 16 No-vember at UKZN Westville campus, under the auspices of the Departmentof Arts and Culture (DAC), the LuthuliMuseum and UKZN.
Ginwala said it was her secondvisit to Groutville, with the first beingin 1960.
“This is in fact my second visit toGroutville. I came here when therewere lots of sanctions against SouthAfrica,andweasANCmemberswant-ed to stand together against the re-gime,” said Ginwala.
She was joined at the wreath-lay-ing by Luthuli’s first borndaughterAl-bertina, representatives of the De-partment of Arts and Culture andlocal municipal councillors andspeakers.
Luthuli expressed her pleasure atGinwala’s involvement in the event.
“We are very happy Ginwala tookthe time to be with us and prepare a
lecture. This visit wasmomentous forGroutville. We need to rememberthose who played a part in the free-dom we enjoy today,” she said.
In keeping with these sentiments, newly elected reverend and head ofthe lical church, Rev SimphiweMkh-ize, led a short service in which he fo-
cusedon the topic thatnoone lives for-ever, but our deeds can.
“Wemust dowhatwe canwhileweare alive, so that our deeds can be re-membered by others. Chief Albert Lu-thuli’s role in our liberation is a rea-son to celebrate, and such deeds willand must be remembered,” he said.

U MGENI Water has recentlyreleased its reporton theLow-er Thukela BulkWater Supply
Scheme - one of the largest invest-ments made by the service provider.
The Umgeni Water in bulk waterinfrastructure iscurrentlyundercon-structionintheiLembeDistrict. It willprovide “a sustainable, safe and reli-able supply” of drinking water to anestimated 167 000 people in areasfrom Ballito to Mandeni, saysUmge-ni Water corporate stakeholdermanager Shami Harichunder.
The project has a budget of R1, 3billionandwill bebuilt in twophases. The firstphasewill comprise thecon-struction of 55Ml of the ultimate

In or-der to enable the contractor to gainaccesstotherightbankoftheThukelaRiver (location of abstraction works)an access road will have to be de-signed and constructed.
Phase two will comprise the con-struction of the remaining 55Ml,when demand dictates. The LowerThukelaBulkWaterSupplywill, in itsentirety andwhen finally completed, comprise of a weir and abstractionworks.
“These structures, located in oradjacenttotheriver, servetocreateanabstraction point for water which is
not encumbered by difficultiescaused by sediment deposition, lowflows or debris,” said Harichunder.
The scheme will work as follows.Therewill also be a low lift pump sta-tion - the intakes situated in the ab-stractionworks feedthe lowliftpumpstationwhich is situated behind, andis protected by, the abstractionworks.
The raw water pipeline will allowforwater to be transferred across theriver via a pipeline constructed in theweiranddischargedintothedesiltingcyclones. These cyclones serve to re-move silt and sand particles from therawwater stream.The55Ml/dwatertreatment plant will make sure thepartiallydesiltedrawwater is treatedat the treatment works to potable
standards and any sludge generateddisposed of.
Ahighliftpumpstationthenformsthestartofthepotablewaterdistribu-tion system. A 900mm diameter ris-ing main forms the transfer pipelinefrom the high lift pump station to thebalancing reservoirs.
The 35Ml Potable Water Reser-voir, situated on the highest pointalong the pipeline route, serves as alink between the rising main and thegravity main and also adds to opera-tional flexibility.
A 900 mm diameter gravity mainforms the final link in the bulk watersupply system to theNCSS.Bulk elec-trical supply of 132KV of power fortwill be supplied for operation of theworks.
UmgeniWater’s Shami Harichun-der said construction of the schemebegan inFebruary thisyearand isex-pected to be completed in September2016. “In financial terms, the LowerThukelaBulkWaterSupplySchemeisthe largest project tobe implementedby Umgeni Water, and it will providea reliable source of potable water toareas currently experiencing prob-lems.
Harichundersaid thatduringcon-struction phase an estimated 2 000jobsareexpected tobecreatedwhichwill be a boost to the economy. Envi-ronmentalists say they are not con-vinced theproject isa long-termsolu-tion. “The Thukela River ...is underterrible strain as it is,” said DolphinCoast Conservancy’s Di Jones.

“She then lit two cigarettes and startedblowing the smoke into all corners of mybusiness premises. She then told me that the“muti” is very strong and that it is Nigerianmuti,” said the victim.
The woman apparently then told him itwould cost R9 000 to “organise” the Nigerianmuti.
“I gave her R7 000 and told her I wouldgive her the balance when everything wasover. She returned thefollowing day and con-ducted her rituals and said nothing wouldtrouble me again, so I paid her the balance.”

“Singh brought the same woman. Sheasked for R10 000. I was afraid and askedher to do what she had to do. She conductedall her rituals atmybusinesspremisesandal-so took me to Blythedale beach and dumpedme into the water three times,” said the con-tractor.
However, the duo failed to swindle moneyfrom their third victim. The businessman, wholivesinStangerManorfound, on four separate occasions, voodoodolls and other “black magic” in his yard.
However, thebusinessmanwent tohisownspiritual healers who said the voodoo dollsand “black magic” did not have power, butbound his house in any case.
The businessman said when he foundthe so-called muti in his yard the fifth time,he was fed up and wanted to know who wasbehind this and installed CCTV cameras.
“Afterthecameraswere installed, avoodoodoll with needles which had a broken handwas found in my yard.
“When I looked at the video footage, I wasshocked to find Singh at 3am in the morningwalking towards my gate and throwing thevoodoo doll in my yard,” he said.
The businessman said he did not confrontSingh but told his business associates andfriends about the video footage.
In themeantime, theduo’slatest victimwasaresident fromStangerManorwhoworked inthe industrial area and travelled with Singh.
The victim confessed all his personalproblems to Singhwho used it to swindle himfor money. Singh together with Khan pickedup their victim fromworkandwhile travellingfrom Manor, Khan told the victim that shecould “sense” in her spirit that he was goingthrough a tough time” and of his many prob-lems.

THE construction of the new Man-deni Mall which will create approx-imately 400 permanent jobs begannear the Sundumbili Plaza after asod turning ceremony on Monday.
The area where about 35 shopswill be built is owned by the Green-Thompson family.
According to the municipality’s
communications officer, MduduziManzi, the mall is expected to becompleted by October next year.
Speaking at the event, Mandenimayor Sphesihle Zulu said the con-struction of the new mall was onlythe beginning.
“The development will not onlybe for the people of Mandeni butwill accommodate people from oth-er municipalities. The mall will
help people who travel long dis-tances to reach shopping malls. Itwill also create much-needed jobs.”
Speaking on behalf of the Green-Thompson family, the founder andthe co-owner of the shopping mallDion Green-Thompson said he isthankful for the amalgamation andco-operation received from the tra-ditional council and the municipalcouncil.
He said he strongly believes thatit is the collaboration that madethis “ambition” come true.
INkosi Linda Mathonsi sharedhis gratitude with the Green-Thom-son family for providing landwhere the mall can be constructed.
He said that he was happy thatthe project has finally been ap-proved as the mall was supposed tobe constructed three years ago but
could not because the Environmen-tal Impact Assessment found therewas a stream in the area.
Manzi said that the municipalityand local stakeholders worked to-gether to prove that the running wa-ter came from a major water leak inthe area that needed to be fixed.

PRIYA NUNKUMARYOUNG, WISE, FREE
AT a recent meeting held at the StangerTown Hall the iLembe mayor announcedthat Stanger Manor and surrounding wardswill soon be on the prepaid water system.
With this system it would be an addedadvantage to council as there will be nomore water bills or debtors and collectionfees.
Now you will pay upfront. If implemented correctly with no disruptions it would bea good system where you manage the usage of water. Conservation of water is critical.
However, there are a number of challenges to the system which I raised at themeeting based on research and investigation and lessons learned from other municipalities that have already implementedthe system.
The demand of water will be reduceddrastically.
Communities using standpipes are atrisk since there are over 113 000 people thatwere infected with cholera after prepaidwater meters replaced communal standpipes.
It will be a matter of time before waterwill be more expensive compared to the traditional billing system.
When we run out of water at night whatdo we do? Buying additional water units isone option but in a worst case scenario yourtaps could be dry until the next day until youtop up with water units.
In the case of an emergency, for examplefire, you have limited water and thatcould turn out to be disastrous. Prepaid system are normally promoted in poorer areas
to secure payments.Poor families will be forced to use un
safe water sources once they lose theirability to pay. It is important to have a system whereby a consumer can pay for waterconsumed, even if the prepaid system defaulted.
There must be a procedure in placewhereby fair water consumption can becalculated on historical or average basis.
Have separate mechanical meters fromthe electronic one. Water treatment processes from the treatment plant can contribute to prepaid system malfunctioning.
With the US system it is possible to buywater on the internet after hours while withthe Kent system it is not possible, whichiLembe is using.

I HAVE recently noticed that teenagers areat a loss when they are faced with real lifedecisions.
Youngsters don't always know what todo or how to handle the pressure of deci-sions.
Personally, I've had my own share ofmistakes, regrets and bad decisions.
But some decisions, I've noticed, havereally changed my life.
So, how do you know right from wrongin terms of decision making?
ber, before you do something which youknow at the back of your mind is a badidea, someone gave you the choice tomakethe right decision.
Try to make the correct decisions, nomatter how long it takes you to choose orhow hard it is, because the good one is al-ways the best one!

IT’S good news to those pupils who were deprivedof learning eastern languages in the 2013 school year.
Eastern languages will be back in the school curriculum from next year. This is through the concertedeffort of the Minority Front, including other individuals and organisations.
Eastern languages were left out of the school curriculum at the beginning of 2013, but it was offeredafter school hours.
The Minority Front had taken the initiative in ensuring the introduction of eastern languages afterschool hours in some schools in Stanger.
However, the turnout had been very poor as pupils were inconvenienced with transport and securityafter school hours being of concern.
Parents are urged to ensure their children showa keen interest in eastern languages, now that itwould be offered during school hours. Pupils shouldalso further continue their study of eastern languages even at higher levels of education.

I SAW the most amazing computer game review onTuesday. It was in the Daily Times. The game was calledDemocracy 3.Democracy 3 is essentially simpresident – this means
it allows you to run one of several countries the way youwant with the policies you like.
You interact with the game purely by setting andaltering policies – spending political capital to do this.
That capital is gained through your ministers, who eachsympathise with particular special interest groups.
If you annoy those groups too much, your ministersdon’t give you much capital, and may even end up resigning.
They also throw in a number of variables such as havingtosolve nationalcrises–whethertheybeasthmaepidemics or organised crime, and keep yourself reasonably popular with the electorate. According to the reviewer: “It isinteresting to note that sometimes what actually worksfor dealing with one crisis isn’t what the people want –legalisingprostitutionforexamplecancutdownorganisedcrime, making your people safer but annoying parents.”
This entire process of how this game works sent mymind on an unstoppable journey questioning democracy
and its true nature. There are always chants by politicians about the
“greatness” of democracy, but I wonder how true this actually is. You have to ask yourself, if a game of this naturecan be created with real worldlike results, do we not havearchitects in our society who simply dictate how we live?It is a well known fact that the world is run by a selectfew corporations who fund politics.
Political funding has often been a hot topic that barelyreaches mainstream media (unlike Idols). Even locally youoften see politicians warming up to people of prominence. They know they can be backed and win a constituency.
Like this game, real politics is the same. It’s all aboutvotes and securing your position of power for the next fiveyears.
Democracy The game
KAVEEL SINGHWe all know that over the next few months the
ANC, DA, MF, IFP – all the well known parties willbe far more visible. Playing their game as usual. Ithink it’s important for us all to understand that thesystem we abide by is failing.
It is flawed and it has shown economically andsocially. If the ANC and DA in Tongaat were actuallydoing anything good we would see many changes.
For a town this small it seems like apathy is thename of the game. Councillors helping peoplewith burst pipes or overgrown verges is not servicedelivery. They are playing their game. Their version of Democracy 3. There is a bigger picture.
Apicturebeyondpatheticexcusesandlackofservice delivery.
We should all consider uplifting our society. Notunder the ideology of democracy, but the spirit ofbeing good human beings.

Spiritual transformation and social uplift-ment are the basic building blocks of allmajorreligions of the world and the Sathya Sai Or-ganisation holds, as its very core, these basicteachings.
Themainobjectiveof theSathyaSaiOrgan-isation is to help one recognise the divinity in-herent in themselves, irrespective of the reli-gion one belongs to.
In his July 1968 speech, Sai Baba stated: “Ihave come to light the lamp of love in yourhearts,toseethatitshinesdaybydaywithadd-ed lustre. I have not come on behalf of any ex-clusive religion. I have not come on amissionof publicity for a sect or creed or cause, norhave I come to collect followers for a doctrine.I have no plan to attract disciples or devoteesintomy fold or any fold. I have come to tell youof this unitary faith, this spiritual principle, this path of love, this virtue of love, this dutyof love, this obligation to love.”
