It is believed that hundreds of resi- dents from Ashville, Glendale and surrounding areas are protesting due to lack of service delivery in the area. According to KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer Constable Si- busiso Khumalo hundreds of protest- ers have blocked the road with skips, logs and debris. The protesters are also believed to have stoned the police and commut- ers on the road, forcing police to close off the road between Doringkop and Maphumulo. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu visited the area on Sunday in a effort to calm protesters. However, the meeting with them was disrupted and he was forced to leave the area. “A group of people disrupted the meeting while we were recessing. We are going to engage the community and see how we can move forward in terms of avoiding these problems of burning tyres [and so on],” he said. He was able to establish that the community had a number of service delivery concerns including proper housing, water, sanitation and elec- tricity and has promised to address these concerns. As of Monday, Ashville Primary School has had to remain closed for the safety of the pupils and teachers. Four people were arrested and charged for public violence earlier this month after they stoned police stationed in Ashville during the first round of service delivery protests. The scene became violent and the Public Policing Unit had to be brought in to calm the situation. Protesters near Ashville Primary School also attempted to attack teach- ers forcing them to shut down and leave school. Police have been monitoring the situation and are currently stationed in the area indefinitely to maintain or- der. The KwaDukuza SAPS are making an appeal to the owners of the trucks to come forward and open cases at the police station. The owners are urged to call the KwaDukuza SAPS on 032 551 8200. Crime fighter killed in cold blood>> ‘The killing is a barbaric act against the loyal community worker which should not go unpunished’MERVYN KRISHNA

WHEN Isaac Gumede’s unclewas killed by criminals al-most 20 years ago, hemade

the decision to dedicate his life tofighting crime.

Lastweek, thebravecrime fighter, like his uncle, was killed by crimi-nals.

Gumede was shot at his home inNtshawini in full view of his family.

It is believed that he was con-fronted by an armed man who

opened fire on him in front of hisfamily, killing him instantly.

Gumede, whowasamemberoftheCommunity Policing Forum inKwaDukuza, together with his team, played a major role in arrestingcriminals and bringing crime downin the Ntshawini area for manyyears.

Gumede also played a role in there-deployment of KwaDukuza SAPSstation commander Brigadier Bong-iwe Sithole.

On numerous occasions Gumede

went up to the Provincial Commis-sioner’s office and the Office of theKZNminister for Safety and Securityto complain about what he believedwaspatheticservicedeliveryfromtheKwaDukuza SAPS.

KwaDukuza Mayor RicardoMthembu condemned the murdersaying this was a serious set-back inthe battle against crime.

“The killing is a barbaric actagainst the loyal community workerwhich should not go unpunished,”said Mthembu.

“Members of Community PolicingForums are self-less people who vol-unteer their timetoservethecommu-nity and to contribute towards a fightagainst crime.

“The services they render to thecommunityshouldberecognisedandrespected by all.

“Unfortunatelytheyarenowbeingtargetedbytherogueandcriminalel-ements who want to impose them-selves on the communities.

“I urge all thosewhomight help infinding leads to come forward to the

police,” said Mthembu. The mayor also extended his

heartfelt condolences to the familymembers of Gumede and his col-leagues in the CPF.

“I am, however, convinced thatthe police will soon catch up withthose responsible and they shall facethe fullmightof the law,”saidMthem-bu.

A case of murder and attemptedmurder have been registered at theKwaDukuza SAPS and are being in-vestigated by police.

“I think more community in-volvementandhavingspecific tar-geted policing activities havehelped us to clamp down oncrime,” said Fittkau.

He said community initiativessuch as the Community PolicingForum and Salt Rock and BallitoNeighbourhood Watch, amongothers, have been instrumental inreporting crimes, so that the SAPSare always on top of crime mat-ters.

However, KwaDukuza and

KwaDukuza SAPS statisticsshowcrimehassoared,withCom-munity Policing Forum memberIsaac Gumede even being mur-dered last week (see www.ballito-fever.co.za for full story).

KWADUKUZA ratepayers say theyare being ripped off as rampanttheft of municipal assets goes un-checked.

Apparently insiders have sto-

to account for all assets of coun-cil?

“The DA believes executive di-rectors of various departmentsmust be responsible and account-able for management of assetsunder their control,” Sing said.

The North Coast KwaDukuzaRatepayers Association is also de-manding that KwaDukuza councilfires useless and corrupt officialswho have ruthless attitudesabout their obligations to deliverproper services.

Fire useless and corrupt officials, saysratepayer’s association

The DA caucus lead-er Madhun Sing calledfor thieves who are em-ployed in the KwaD-ukuza Municipality tobe nailed and jailed.

IDP to receive a ‘make over’>> Experts brought on board to problem-solve the area’s Integrated Development Plan

SHANNON HOPKINS

WITH theNorth Coast experi-encing frequent power out-ages and unpredictable

population movements, amongstother challenges, experts have beenbrought on board to assist.

The first workshop to ascertainchallenges in the iLembe region’s In-tegrated Development Plan (IDP),with a view to rectifying them, washeld at the iLembe Chamber of Com-merce last Friday.

TheUNFPA(UnitedNationsPopu-lation Fund), in collaboration withKZN Cooperative Governance andTraditional Affairs (Cogta) and theKZN Population Unit in the Depart-ment of Social Development, hascommissionedOutsourcedInsightCCtodevelopa‘best-practice’IDPfortheiLembe District Municipality.

Thisresearchwillfocusonpopula-

tion and development dynamics.Theproject aims to strengthen the

capacity of municipal and provincial

officials to integrate population anddevelopment issues into respectiveIDPs.

Thebest-practicemodel - thatwillbe developed through this process -will be inclusive of existing statutoryrequirementsandpopulationandde-velopment-related issues.

Outsourced Insight owner Ste-phenRulesaid theworkshopwill firstbe an information-gathering exer-cise. “We will be collecting percep-tions about what is happening andnot happening within all four of theiLembe district’s municipalities.

“Oncethisiscomplete,thewayfor-ward will be discussed by interestedand affected parties,” said Rule.

He said this was the first meetingof many. Next week’s meeting willgive members of the public a chanceto have their say.

ThereafterOutsourcedInsightwillengage with municipal officials andrepresentatives. Outsourced In-sight’s Justin Steyn said challengeshave already come to light.

“There are instances in the areawithregardtopopulation thatarenotideal. For example, Ndwedwe has anegativepopulationgrowth.Weneedto find out why and how this can besolved.Thereareotherareas thatarenot controlled andhave a huge influxof people, causing pressure on servi-ces and infrastructure,” said Steyn.

He added that municipalities areapproving new developments, suchas gated estates, without there beingsufficientelectricityandwater tosup-port them.

“Ballito isheading formajorwaterrestrictions if this is not dealtwithur-gently. There is already great strainonelectricitysupply,withoutagesbe-ing the norm,” said Steyn.

KZNLegislature’sAnnMcDonnell, who attended the workshop, said itcould be very effective if the “rightpeople attended.”

“The IDP is not always taken seri-ously. Many large projects, like thePeakingPlant, goaheadwithouthav-ing been properly provided for in theIDP. The public also needs to get in-volved. Attendance at the publicmeetings is poor, and thus just be-comesa‘box-ticking’exerciseformu-nicipalities,” said McDonnell.

The joys of being a Durbanite

THERE are things about liv-inginDurban,andindeedinSouthAfrica, that are unde-

niably repulsive. The volume ofwhoonga-addicted beggars attraffic lightswithhangdogexpres-sions and their branded clothinghidden under a nearby bush.

The rapists, murderers andthieves. The Zumas. The fact thatthe only car one can buy in pink isa Suzuki Alto. I could carry on.

Over the course of writing thisoft-cynical column, I have beentold by at least one reader to packmybags and leave, or stopwhing-ing about South Africa.

Well, senders of hate-mail, to-day I am going to extol the virtuesofourprodigiousprovinceandour

so-called rainbow nation as awhole.

I do not intend to make thissoundlikeatourismbrochure, butif anyone were to be inclined tohiremeasa travelwriterbasedonthis piece, the door to negotiationis always open.

Likeanawkwardconversation,I amgoing to startwith theweath-er. While Our city swelters underhair-raising humidity (literally, hair raising).

However, I realised after visit-ingSingapore a fewyears ago thatsayingDurbanishumidis likecall-ingagarden snakeadeadlybeast. It could be so, so much worse.

Salaries, one might argue, arefarhigherinJohannesburgthaninour relatively sleepy town.

This is true, and somebody do-ing your job in Johannesburgmayearn 30% more than you.

This after they fight traffic 80%longer than you do, pay obsceneamounts ofmoney for their piecesof property neighbouring a minedump, and pay etolls because thegantries, amazingly enough, havestill not been pulled down by vigi-lantes.

Inlivingthislifestyleinournearthe city of gold, they manage tosave a small amount of moneyeach year. And what do they dowith it?

Spend it on their annual trip tothe coast, when they will spend aweekortwoinDurbanorMargate, clamouring with their counter-parts to claim a spot on the beachorgettheirkidontooneoftheridesat uShaka Marine World.

Capetoniansboast of theclean-linessof theircity,whichcannotbedisputed.

Theyspeaklovinglyofthewhitesand on their beaches, where thewater is so cold that by sticking ina toe, it is possible to freeze off anipple.

Admittedly, Cape Town doeshave one thing that we don't - amountain.

If anyone ever tells you thatBloemfontein, Pietermaritzburgor Pofadder are better places tolive than Durban, be charitableand book them an appointmentwith the next available psychia-trist.

Withinathree-hourdriveofourfront doors, we have game re-

serves, thebigfive, mountainsandmore natural beauty than couldarguablybefoundanywhereintheworld.

We have beaches, waves andmarkets to be freely laid upon, surfed and explored.

Our entertainment scene is im-proving in leaps and bounds, withBig Concerts actually not leavingus out of TheScript's tourwhich isplanned for early next year.

Our localcomedysceneis flour-ishing, thanks to some talented lo-cals.

As awhole, SouthAfrica (touchwood) seems to be a low priorityfor the terrorist organisationswhich threaten the USA, the UK,and other first world nations.

Thus far, in dealing with ourown problems, we seem to havelargely avoided the inadvertent orintentional offending of any nota-ble religious group.

As a nation, we have beenthrough hell. Some of us are stillsuffering immeasurable hard-ships.

But, Durbanites, we suffer ourlot under the warmth of the sun-shineandsurroundedbypeoplesolaid back they are almost lyingdown. Things could be worse.

Happy Heritage Day, Durban.

STEPH MCLENNAN

KZN MEC, Mike Mabuyakhulu’s dogged determina-tiontosoldieronwithhis “pieinthesky” Drakensburgcableway project in the face of an increasingly diffi-cult economic climate becomes more farcical witheach day.

The involvement of Ithala Development Bank an-nounced recently raises another red flag.

The KZN portfolio committee for tourism has notyet met to discuss this project. To be informed by themedia that Ithala is taking over the reins on thisproject is frankly insulting to the newly elected legis-lature.

According to media reports, Ithala will be respon-sible for driving funding for the project, and for thebusiness model.

This is alarming in light of the failed Dolphin Whis-pers development in the Point area of Durban - alsodriven by Ithala Bank – and the many other “whiteelephants” left in its wake around the province.

During the recent KZN budget approval process, the DA ppealed to Mabuyakhulu and his departmentto get the basics right first. This means putting anygrand plans for a cableway on the back burner.

Departmental priorities should be the upgrade ofroads and accommodation, particularly in the Hluh-luwe-Umfolozi Park, while access roads and signageto all KZN’s tourism sites need to be maintained toenhance the experience of a visit to our province. Acableway in a remote corner of the Drakensburg isdoomed to fail.

Ann McDonnell, MPLDA KZN spokesperson on Economic De-

velopment, Tourism and Environmental Af-fairs

DA says no tothis ‘pie inthe sky’ project

I ENJOYED reading about your Spelling Beecompetitions throughoutKZNand I think thatthe people who started this competitionmustreceive praise.

As a teacher, I think it is an excellent tooltoencouragepupilstoputextraeffortintotheirlanguagedevelopment, butIamsadthatitwasnotasbigasalloftheotheryearsandtheprizeswere a lot smaller.

I have seen the effects in our own school, where the children actively try to use newwords in their essays and written work, andI think the spelling bee and the enthusiasmwithwhich they learnt thewords for the com-petitionhadabig role to play.May it growbig-ger next year.

Painkillers and exercise apotentially lethal combo>> Get professional advice when taking medication

IF you're an avid exerciser, thetemptation to 'push throughthe pain' can be tempting - but

there are some things you shouldknow before you pop a painkiller

to mask the pain.Exercising on certain medica-

tions - such as chronicmedication- is unavoidable.

Yet many of us use painkillersand anti-inflammatory medicinestomask pain so they can continuewith their training.Whywouldwedo this?

Well, if you've been training fora marathon (or other sportingevent) formonths on endand sud-denlyyouexperiencesomeformofpain that interferes with yourtraining as race day draws near, thetemptationtodullthepainuntilafter the race you trained so hardfor is over can be all tootempting.

While thismayhelpyoucontin-uewithyour trainingprogramme,it also merely disguises the fact

that the body is experiencing pain- which could be indicative of adeeper, underlying issue thatcouldbeexasperatedbycontinuedexercise.

Risks of painkillers and exer-cise

It can lead to overtraining, which carries it's own burden ofrisk.

Ifyou'reconsideringacareerasan athlete, be extra-careful beforetaking any painkiller medication, asmany experts believe "painkill-ers fulfil all the requirements of adoping substance".

How other medications canaffect exercise

However, exercising on somemedications isoftenunavoidable -suchaswith chronic health condi-tions - and others don't have sucha dramatic effect, but it's alwaysadvisable to understand the risks.

Somecoldmedications, certaindiet pills, allergy remedies andherbal teas may contain com-pounds that contain caffeine, which can elevate the heart rate,leadingtounwantedside-effectsinsomepeoplesuchasheartpalpita-tions.

Some medications can alteryour resting heart rate and yourmaximal heart rate, and if yourtraining programme is reliant onyour tracking your progressthrough a heart rate monitor, thiscouldbedetrimental toyour train-ing.

If you know ahead of time thatthemedicationyouareoncouldaf-fect these, your trainer should beable to adjust your training pro-gramme accordingly to take thisinto account.

If youhavebeenusingacertainmedicationforanextendedperiodof time, while engaging in regularexercise, overtime this could alsoaffect theway your body respondsto certain medications.

Forexample, exercisehasbeenshown to increase sensitivity tosome psychoactive medicationssuch as antidepressants, whereasregular exercise has been showntodecreasetheneedforhighbloodpressure medication over time.

Generally however, the smartthing to do is advise your doctorwhat type of exercise you engagein and how regularly when theyprescribe you any medication.Rather safe than sorry.

CONSTANT neck pain is a commonproblem and is quite difficult to dealwith and moreover very troublesome

since it impacts negatively on all aspect ofyour life and health.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OFNECK PAIN?

Damaged nerve (pinching of nerve), de-generativce disc disease, injury, whiplash, constant exposer to cold wind.

Stress, holding the neck in the same po-sition for a long time, improper or quickmovement.

SYMPTOM OF NECK PAIN ARE:Constant headache and neck pain, espe-

cially pain at the back of the head, stiffness, back pain along with neck pain, shoulderand arm pain, swallowing problems, dizzi-

ness, poor concentration, depression, feel-inglightheaded, irritability, anxiety, eyepainand glandular swelling.

TREATMENT OF NECK PAIN:The team at Holistic Wellness Centre use

acupuncture, therapeutic massage, cup-ping, electro therapy and heat therapy toimprove the flow of blood in and around theaffected area.

Thus, nerve functions are restored andsymptoms related to neck pain starts sub-siding.

The patient responds fantastically andalmost immediate relief is felt, since theyare treating the root cause of the problemand not just the symptom, thus enablingyou to live a pain free life

For most people, stiffness and pain are

a way of life to which many have becomehabituated and it is not often until they re-ceive acupuncture and therapeutic mas-sage that they realise the muscles aretight or how much energy is consumed bystress.

If you or someone you know is sufferingwith neck pain, consult with these qualifiedand registered acupuncturists so that youget the relief you deserve.

Beat exhaustionnaturally

HOW are you going to manage, especially consider-ing that you are probably totally exhausted already?

A South African born GP, Dr Frank Lipman, whois regarded as a pioneer and internationally recog-nised expert in the fields of Integrative and Function-al Medicine advises on these seven sure-fire ways toensure you have sustained energy right through tothe end of the year:

* Cut out caffeine and go slow on alcoholA cup of tea or coffee may give you a short-term

lift, but a new study shows that caffeine consump-tion even six hours before bedtime can have signifi-cant, disruptive effects on sleep.

* Cut out sugar - Dr Lipman believes sugar canput enormous stress on hormones – when you crashfrom a sugar high your adrenal glands kick in and re-leasecortisol,asteroid-likesubstance,tohelpliftyouup again.

To combat this, he says you should cut out sugarand artificial sweeteners.

* Avoid processed fats - Processed fats and foodsare toxic to the body, particularly if you’re run down.

Avoid hydrogenated fats and trans fats as theynot only increase bad cholesterol, but are said to alsoblock the uptake of good fatty acids such as omegasthree, six and nine – needed for healthy brain func-tion, eyes, joints and skin.

* Eat most of your food by lunchtime - The body’smetabolism reaches its peak by lunchtime (slowingdown as the sun starts to set) and you should usethis to your advantage by making breakfast andlunch your largest meals of the day.

EVERYONE depends on their vision in more ways than they realise.Without healthy vision, our abilities are drastically affected.

For any other problems relating to your eyes, contact Dr L Naidooat Tongaat Eye Centre on 032 945 0007.

Celebrating Heritage Day>> Knowing your heritage is the key to celebrating it

WHAT Is Our Heritage? As South Africa celebrates

Heritage Month, we have an op-portunity to reflect on what our collectiveheritage actually is.

This is apt as we look back on what wehave achieved in the first 10 years of SouthAfrica's freedom and democracy.

Several public attempts have beenmade to define heritage, to capture its es-sence in the South African context.

Invariably, questions are raised aboutits value and worth, and particularly its rolein helping us meet some of our many chal-lenges.

Some have loosely defined heritage as"something possessed as a result of one'snatural situation or birth" or "inheritedfrom the past, passed on by those - people, experiences and events - that have comebefore us".

Both of these are true of South Africa'sheritage, which also encompasses our his-tory, values, norms and culture.

Givenourdiversity, it isdifficulttospeakof any of these in a singular sense.

Through an extensive consultativeprocess and critical analysis of various re-search findings as part of the Brand SouthAfrica campaign, the International Mar-keting Council defined our heritage interms of three elements: who we are, whatwe have and how we do things.

Who we areIn a way, who we are and who we

choose to be as a nation is very much aproduct of our collective heritage.

Because of our history and the lessonsdrawn from it, we have chosen to gatherstrength in our diversity and not to regardor use it as a divisive tool.

The celebratory Khoisan term Ke e Xar-ra Ke ("United in Diversity") serves as a liv-ing testimony to the choice we made morethan ten years ago - to find peaceful andproductive ways of resolving our differen-ces, which has led to all of us living as onenation.

That choice makes it possible for us to-day to proudly speak of "unity in diversity".

South Africans have a pioneering spirit,

courage and the determination to succeed. These traits continue to drive us as we

deal with the challenges of building a na-tiononcedivided,tofindingfreshandinno-vative solutions in dealing with these chal-lenges.

The optimism and encouragement wefind in unlikely places and from the mostunexpected people, fuels our task of bet-tering the lives of our fellow South Africansand at the same time, ensuring that wecompete with the best in the world.

What we haveIncreasingly, South Africans are begin-

ning to appreciate what we have inheritedand what we are collectively capable of.

Similar to the rich and diverse naturalresources of this beautiful land and itswildlife, we have a productive diversity, caring strength and creative ingenuity thatis building a country that is adored and en-vied by the world.

To most of the world, we are viewed ashaving so much to offer to all of our citizensand the rest of the international communi-ty. Examples are: Our country's successfultransformation from a pariah state to astable and prosperous democracy, whichhas led to South Africa being respectedand revered internationally for its mostprogressive constitution Our ability to turna tragic situation into a lesson for the world- our transition to a democratic state wasexpected to be marred by violence and ret-ribution, but instead it was an astoundinglesson in reconciliation Our underlyingwealth and natural assets and the talentof all South Africans - the world comes toSouth Africa to see its beautiful skies andbeaches, Table Mountain and the game re-serves, which always fulfil their expecta-tions. However, what amazes and surpris-es visitors is that they fall in love with thewarmth and friendliness of our people, which always entices them to come backfor more South African smiles and caringattitudes.

Ways to celebrate our heritageThe Oxford dictionary defines heritage

as "what is or may be inherited and a por-tion allotted to anyone".

September is Heritage Month in SouthAfrica and it is every South African's rightto embrace and celebrate it! Here are someways we can celebrate our heritage:

1. Explore and discover our country - andwhile you're at it, visit our heritage sites. Not sure where they are? Visit www.south-africa.infotoplanyourtripfromexperienceto experience.

2. Show your true colours and fly ourflag - be an ambassador for South Africaand fly our flag in thought, word and deed. After all, marketing South Africa is every-one's business and each and every one ofus, through our behaviour, the words weuse and the stories we tell, can make a dif-ference in how we see ourselves and howthe rest of the world perceives South Afri-ca. Think of our progressive constitution,Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela as justa start.

3. Celebrate our successes and shareyour life story; we have a lot to be proudof - we continue to inspire the world to anew way of doing things, because ourunique combinations create refreshingpossibilities.

4. Proudly buy South African productsand make use of South African services.Thisisnotonlyacelebrationofourheritagebut it helps to sustain our economy too.Marmite, boerewors, Mrs Balls Chutney,Ouma's Rusks and biltong - does it get anybetter than that? Why not host a HeritageDay lunch and serve only South Africanfood?

5. Learn our anthem - We must be theonly country to have a national anthemcomposed in five different languages - andprobably the only one whose people don'tknow the words to all of the verses! Go towww.southafrica.infotolearnthewordstothe entire anthem.

Unity in diversity is the key to heritage in South Africa.

iLEMBE DISTRICT MUNICIPALITYILEMBE –UMASIPALA WESIFUNDA

Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, the iLembe District Municipality is experiencing a drought and would like the communities ofKwaDukuza Local Municipality to assist in ensuring minimal amounts of water are being used.

Local municipalities of Ndwedwe and Maphumulo are already at Level 3 of drought due to substantial reduction of Mvotshane river levels. The normal abstraction volumes from the river have always been 6ML/d but have reduced below 3 ML/d.

How can residents help?• Stop washing vehicles and driveways• Report leaky faucets and toilets to the District Municipality• Take shorter showers.• Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.• Reuse water as much as possible.

NOTICE OF DROUGHT CONDITIONS

Which KwaDukuza areas are affected?1. Ward 1 (Sokesimbone and Sadlokwe), Ward 3 (Nyathikazi) and Ward 25 (Mdlebeni, Kamu, Vulinqgondo and Ohlange)

The Municipality is currently able to abstract 600kl/ Day instead of the normal 1000 kl/ day/ from uTugela River which is the source ofwater for these areas. This is resulting to some areas not receiving water on 24 hour basis with highest areas like Sokesimbone and Sadlokwe. Mdlebeni Township was receiv-ing some of the supply from the Nsimba River which has also dried up. The supply of water in all those areas is augmented through the water tankers.

For more information please contact the iLembe District Municipality Call Centre on 032-4379375/ 9371.

2. Darnall and Zamani TownshipThe source of water, the Nonoti River is drying up. Residents urged to conserve water there are very low river levels. If things continue in thisfashion, the Darnall Mill may restrict supply to iLembe reservoirs and prioritize their operations.

3. Blythedale BeachBoreholes are not performing to their best due to the drought condition.

4. KwaDukuza CBD and surrounds (Gledhow, Kearsney, Stanger Manor, Townview, Lindelani, Shakaville, High Ridge and Warrenton)The source of water from these areas is from Umvoti and it is also affected by the drought. No interruptions have been experienced yet, but theyare expected should the drought worsen.

5. Groutville and Palm LakesSource of water is Hazelmere Dam. The dam level has dropped from 100% to 56% within a space of three months. If the situation continues, wewill not be able to receive any water. Currently the supply from Hazelmere is so low such that it does not allow any buffer in the storage reservoirs. The supply and demand is evenly matched. Any break in the system results to water interruptions.

New Toyota Yaris>> Big cahs invested in new, improved Yaris

TOYOTA has invested 85 million euros, engineered 1 000 new parts and spent576 000 man hours refining the new

Yaris.After research conducted across several

platforms including press analysis, custom-er clinics and dealer feedback, Toyota Eu-rope identified three key areas where thecurrent generation Yaris scored highly – out-standing roominess, powertrain efficiencyand standard features, making it the smartchoice.

Eschewing supermini stereotypes for ahighly distinctive exterior, the new Yaris sees

the most dramatic execution of Toyota’scontemporary frontal design language todate with sharp-edged detailing.

The narrow upper and large trapezoidalgrilles, ahallmarkofToyota’scurrentdesign, are present but they now merge at the pointof the Toyota emblem to form a powerfulcross shape.

Eight exterior colours are available, in-cluding new Avante-Garde Bronze Metallic(petrol models only) and Pacific Blue Metal-lic. Lava Red Metallic and Pearl White Metal-lic are Hybrid exclusive colours.

The upper instrument panel has been

made thinner, and the upper surface of thedriver’s instrument binnacle has been re-styled to give a slimmer appearance.

New seat trims are provided, with a newfabric pattern and colours. Befitting itsrange-topper status, the Hybrid is deckedout in a leather and cloth combo.

The new Yaris is available with three en-gine choices – two petrol, and a hybrid. Thefull hybrid system, a first for this segment, benefits from adjustments which havebrought its CO2 emissions down further, from 88 to 82g/km. Extremely fuel efficient(3,6 litres in the combined cycle) and clean(virtually zero NOx and particulate emis-sions), this innovative powertrain is at thecutting edge of technology.

Renowned for its near-silent running, comfort and easy handling, especiallyaround town where the hybrid system al-lowsthecartobedrivenforcertaindistancesin electric mode, or with limited use of thepetrol engine. The auto CVT-based trans-mission adds to the all-round smooth, quietand comfortable driving experience.

Yaris Hybrid’s powertrain features afour-cylinder Atkinson cycle 1,497cc enginethat is 50mm shorter than the 1.8-litre unitused by Prius and Auris Hybrid, it is also 17kglighter. Its features include a cooled exhaustgas recirculation system, an electric waterpump, a low-friction distribution chain, anintake manifold made of a composite mate-rial and a compact exhaust manifold.

The new Yaris has a more rigid upper andlower body structure, which offers a more di-rect and linear response to steering inputs.— Supplied.

Behind the wheel of these new ver-sions, whether the GT 205 or GT 180 fit-ted with the 1.6-litre THP 205Stop&Start six-speed manual and the2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 EAT6 engines re-spectively, drivers will appreciate theremarkableperformanceofthesevehi-cles.

The 308 GT’s front end now housesthe lion in the grille with three horizon-tal blades on either side of the emblemand LED lighting used throughout.

From behind, the 308 GT is strikingfor its posture as the GT signature is in-tegrated in the grill, the tailgate andthe front wheel panels.

The range of colours for the 308 GTinclude the new Magnetic Blue.

To deliver maximum enjoyment, the GT makes the most of a chassiswith specific settings and high per-formance engines. Engineers used allof the brand’s expertise to achieve a re-markable power to weight ratio of just

5.85kg/hp for the petrol 308 GT.Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h,

takes the petrol 308 GT just 7,5 sec-onds.

The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205Stop&Start engine is specified with asix-speed manual gearbox to make themost of its 285Nm of torque, availablebetween 1 750 and 4 500rpm.

This diesel engine is coupled to anEAT6automaticgearbox.ItusesQuick-shift technology for fast gear changes,as well as the ability to down-shift au-tomatically to the speed required rath-er than in sequential order.

Furthermore, its efficiency is al-mostthesameasforamanualgearboxdue to reduced internal friction and theuse of torque converters applied when-ever needed to avoid transmission slip.

Performance of this level demandsan effective braking system and this isprovided by a Bosch 9CE central unitdistributing the braking effort be-tween the four discs. At the front, the330mm diameter and 30mm thickdiscs are gripped by floating caliperswith 60mm pistons. At the rear, thediscs are 268mm diameter on 308 GTand 290mm on 308 GT SW. Both en-gines types have switchable ESP.

NEVIL’S Auto kicked off their campaign in the KwaDuku-za Darts Association (KDDA) League on a winning noteafter snatching a nail-biting (19-17) win against arch-ri-vals Isithebe Paints on Wednesday night.

Nevil’s Auto, who finished a disappointing last in theDistell Richelieu League last month came into the gameas “underdogs” but left the Dolphin Coast Tavern in highspirits after clinching a morale boosting 19-17 win.

There was little separating both teams in the first fourframes with the matches ending in a tame 3-3 draw. ThepenultimategameprovedtobetheturningpointforNev-il’s Auto, who held onto a 4-2 win to forge ahead (16-14).

Isithebe’s hopes of snatching victory in the final frameproved to be futile after the scores were tied at 3-3 givingNevil’s Auto a well deserved 19-17 win.

Paddy Padayachee was the toast of the Nevil’s Auto

outfit, winning six games on a trot. He received good sup-port from Sanjay Singh and Shaun Pillay who won fourgames each. Isithebe’s defeat must be attributed to thebelow par performance of Asogan Latshoomanan whofailed to muster a single victory from six league matches.

Meanwhile, Darnall Action Sporting got off to a disap-pointing start after slumping to 10-26 defeat at thehands of R &B Gledhow.

Darrel Shanmagum was in devastating form for Gled-how winning six successive league matches. NeeranSomnath won five games with Terrence Pillay, Collin Ra-malingam and Ashley Haripersaad winning four gameseach.

Isithebe will be hoping to get back on the winning trailwhen they lock horns with R & B Gledhow in their nextleague fixture. Gledhow United kick off their KwaDukuzaDarts Association League campaign against Darnall Ac-tion Sporting.
