!! This year, Wichita Collegiate School’s annual dinner theatre production of West Side Story is coming to the Galichia Stage with full force. With a new director, a new choreographer, and a new costume designer, the show will be different from other performances but nothing less than awesome.! West Side Story is a modern day, 1950’s New York City twist on Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo & Juliet. Yet instead of families and their old quarrels, West Side Story presents us with two rival gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. The teenage street gangs are from different ethnic backgrounds, the Sharks are Puerto Rican and the Jets are American and they are struggling for control of the neighborhood. Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, who is the sister to the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo.! Those who know this story will quickly pick out the characters in West Side Story as characters that resemble counterparts in Romeo and Juliet. You will not be disappointed in seeing Collegiate’s dinner theatre production of West Side Story. The entire show is full of suspense, action, constant dancing, beautiful singing, jokes-- to lighten the situation, and above all things, love. I advise you to come and see this show, support your classmates who gave up countless hours to create a beautiful musical. Thanks to the music and lyrics of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is now an American classic, I’m betting it will be a Collegiate classic too!

! ! ! ! ! ! CUPCAKES, By Tara Kneller! Cupcakes have really taken flight recently with multiple TV shows, like Cupcake Wars, are focused solely on the cute, colorful little mini cakes. You may ask, why are cupcakes so great? ! Well, they are the perfect size for one, the perfect size for curing your sweets craving. Cupcakes come in such a wide range of decoration, fancy, simple, colorful and sprinkled. ! I love making cupcakes. I make them for birthdays, (like Riley’s 16th--he had blue, green & orange!) holidays, or just for fun! Here at Spartan Voice we’ve decided to feature cupcake I’ve made every issue! Enjoy!

continued from page 1.! Now in its’ twentieth year, VMAG has proven to be a perfect way to showcase the school’s many groups, relive the best sporting moments, as well as show off our students’ humorous side. “I’ve always wanted to be in a VMAG skit,” says sophomore Riley Kemmer, “It has been a lifelong dream.”! Despite the class’s secretive and shady doings, all of us can find humor in the group’s work. Whether it is Mr. Davis hitting Ben Hatfield in the face with a pie, (now a VMAG classic) or Connor Barragree doing his best D.J. Khaled impression, the class is always sure to create something funny. For those of you who are new or just, you know, Freshmen, check out YouTube for the now infamous versions of “Stanky Leg- Teacher Style,” (currently up to 45,434 views f.y.i. Mr Colbert).Be on the lookout for VMAG 2010’s second installment sometime in December.

VOLUME 4 ISSUE 5! NOVEMBER 5 2010BASKETBALL CONDITIONING By Riley Kemmer! It’s that time of year again, the leaves are changing, the air is frigid and there are a bunch of guys running around the track. Yes! You know what that means. Basketball season is right around the corner. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, there is one thing that comes first . . . Conditioning!! You may ask why anyone in their right minds would want to be out running? All I can say is, we all feel so special doing more than any other previous year has done for conditioning. Summarizing the experience, Chase Atnip says, “it’s terrible, it’s awful, it really sucks. But it does give you confidence.”! Coach Fiegel has put together what he calls “A feast, nay a smorgåsborg,” for this year’s runners. Fiegel decided that after graduating one of the arguably best senior classes to come through Collegiate, the only way to get this year’s team up to its previous caliber is to be in great shape. We have been through so many rigorous work outs that throwing up is not uncommon. Some of these workouts consist of running a mile for times that range between 5 and 7.22 minute mark. Other workouts have the Cross-Country team pitying us.

This may all sound like fun and games, yet what Coach Fiegel enjoy most is likely reveling in his power to taunt us boys with impossible questions about nature. In one of these harsh incidents, the runners were asked what the scientific name was for the tree, many know as the “hedge apple tree.” The question was baited with the promise of ending the day early. None of us answered correctly and we were marched over to the bleachers where the ‘smorgåsborg’ commenced. Unbelievable! But none of us are likely to forget the Osage Orange Tree.

The man with a plan . . . Coach Fiegel!

VOLUME 4 ISSUE 5! NOVEMBER 5 2010

This Day in History:

GUNPOWDER PLOT: London, England, 1605.

King James I learns of a plot to blow up Parliament. Guy Fawkes is arrested in a cellar beneath the Parliament building with 20 barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes, then confesses, while being tortured, to his role in an English Catholic conspiracy to annihilate England’s Protestant government. Guy Fawkes and his 12 co-conspirators were sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered. Guy Fawkes jumped the gallows at the last moment, broke his neck and died instantly- thus avoiding a wretched death. However, his body was still drawn and quartered and the his body parts distributed to the “ four corners of the kingdom.”

In 1606, Parliament established November 5 as a national celebration in remembrance of the Gunpowder Plot.

To this day the British light bonfires, set off fireworks and burn effigies, mostly of Fawkes himself, but the Pope and Thatcher have not been excluded.

Historians have dubbed Fawkes “the only man to enter Parliament with honest intentions.”

What is Debate? by Tara Kneller! What is Debate? Aristotle says that “Debate is the search for the probable truth.” Mr. Wren agrees with him, adding it is also the “academic study of argumentation and persuasion.”! “Debate is awesome, there is nothing like walking up to a podium and indirectly calling some one an idiot using evidence,” says Nigel Murphey, a member of the junior varsity Collegiate debate team. Debate has become an integral program at Collegiate. We have the biggest squad in the history of Wichita Collegiate School this year. The team is led by Tiffany Massey and Adam Saidian, who have both been very successful in their past debate tournaments. But Debate is not limited to upperclassmen, freshmen Tim Smith, a debater, adds “debate is fun, we get to file folders all day long and search the internet for hard evidence. It could take hours.”! “Our goal is to qualify for state and to continue to expand and grow the size and strength of the squad, continually energizing young minds,” says Mr. Wren of his hopes for this season. Furthermore, “we have a lot of fun in debate. Like other team activities, the team becomes close to one another and they develop real friendships.” Mr. Wren loves debate.

WAITING FOR SUPERMAN . . . By Alex Waldeck.!! The documentary Waiting for Superman is all about how badly our American school systems are failing. Along with startling statistics, the film shows how six different students from across the country manage in bad schools with terrible teachers. I will admit that after being a lifer at Collegiate, I didn’t truly understand that there were actually children out in the world, going to school everyday to schools where high school freshmen still only had a third grade reading level. It is a blindness like mine that keeps the system at a standstill.! The children in the movie were living in rough parts of their states and they were attending their neighborhood’s public school. All of the kids enjoyed school and their parents wanted them to receive the best education they could afford, even if it meant working three jobs. As far as I could tell all of the students were intelligent and showed great potential but they just weren’t in the proper places to receive the greatest help.! Certain parts of the movie pointed to statistics that were dumbfounding. First of all was the absurdly small amount of children in public schools who would actually have the grades and motivation to graduate. In a school of 12,000 freshmen only 6,000 will become sophomores, and only 2,000 will actually graduate. What is more terrifying is that out of those 6,000 kids who drop out after freshmen year about 3,000 of them will end up in prison for at least four years. The four years that those children are in prison taxpayers are paying for the cost of incarceration. All the money being put into prisons is more than the tuition for one kid to attend kindergarten through four years of college. Is that not just absurd?! Knowing all of this really made me feel privileged to attend Collegiate. I never really understood why everyone kept telling me I was lucky to go to a school like Collegiate. I thought every school was like ours and I couldn’t be more wrong. The next time anyone complains about homework think about what is worse: doing some homework everyday or being a kid at a failing public school and putting your name in a raffle to see if God will smile upon you and grant you admittance to a slightly better public school. Thank you everyone at Wichita Collegiate School.

Now showing at Warren Theater, 13th st.
