KWANZAABY SERJAY SAMBROS

JOYOUS Kwanzaa! “Habari Gani?” or not in Swahili “What’s the news?” Kwanzaa is a fascinating holiday that by some estimations is celebrated by less than 1 million people. Many people are afraid to participate because it is so foriegn and unfamiliar, but Kwanzaa is a holiday for anyone wanting to celebrate Africa. Maulana Karenga, convicted felon and creator of Kwanzaa, founded the holiday to celebrate a common ground for African culture. Kwanzaa starts on the day after Christmas and lasts for 7 days. Since no one celebrates Kwanzaa anymore, do your part and don a robe, beat a drum and make sure to light seven beeswax candles for the kinara.

Looking for the perfect gift? Why not stay home and make some yummy Chocolate Turtles to show you care? You can also save money with this gift, since most of the ingredients you probably already have. These yummy chocolates are easy to make and can be presented beautifully wrapped in cellophane with a pretty bow. These are the perfect gift for a parent or grandparent or anyone really! Spray a 12-count muffin pan, liberally, with vegetable oil cooking spray. Put the almonds in the bottom of each muffin cup and set aside. For the caramel: In a 3-quart, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the cream, butter, sugar, and water. Stir over medium heat until the mixture is smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer registers 240 degrees F, about 5 to 7 minutes. Let the mixture cool for 30 seconds. Using a long-handled, metal spoon, carefully spoon the caramel over the nuts. Allow the caramel to harden, at room temperature, for 1 hour.

Put the chocolate chips in a medium stainless steel or glass bowl. Set the bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water and stir occasionally until the chocolate has melted, about 4 minutes. Spoon the chocolate over the caramel and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Using a thin-bladed spatula, remove the turtles from the pan (caramel will be hard). Let the turtles stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour (to allow the caramel to soften) before serving.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature. You are ready for Christmas!

BEIBER FEVERQuestions with a 4th grader

who hates Justin Beiber.

By Ellen Healy.

Q: Do you like or dislike Justin Beiber?

A: Not in a lifetime!

Q: Why or why not?

A: Well, he’s a spoiled brat, his songs are meaningless, he thinks he is all “that,” and he is rude, Canadian, he was discovered on “YouTube” and he is STUPID!!!!!! (And he is a jerk)

Q: How do other 4th graders feel about him?

A: We call him “Justina Beaver” because he looks like a beaver. We make fun of his songs like that one “Baby” song [changing the lyrics] to “Rabies, rabies, rabies--I eat babies . . ohhh.”

Q: What do you do to show you’re not a fan?

A: If we go to a store and see a magazine with him on it, we turn it over so you can’t see him.

Q: What is your closing statement for all of Justin Bieber’s fans?

A: Urgh . . really, I can’t even talk about it anymore!

By Alex WaldeckChristmas break is almost here, which means a whole country’s worth of teenagers that have nothing to do for two weeks. For a little while the Collegiate students will be basking in the glory of no school, but that quickly wears off. Luckily, over the course of December a load of new movies will be coming to theaters! Obviously some choices are better than others, so I am here to direct you toward the right choices of movies for this upcoming holiday season. For the fighter in all of us we can enjoy “The Warriors Way” 12/3, a western/martial arts action flick but if that’s not hardcore enough then see “The Fighter” with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.Less in-your-face movies include the return of Lucy and Edmund in “Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” But there are some people who don’t want to see action over the holidays. They believe holidays are times for family and renewing life. Well, if a family film is what you are after “Yogi Bear” is making his return. The classic food-loving bear of the 50’s will be coming to a theater near you on December 17th. The last category that will be covered is those people who love to laugh! And what better way to laugh than with a Ben Stiller movie? That’s right, “Little Fockers” is back, with the help of Robert De Niro this movie is surely going to be gut-busting hilarious. Now, you have been informed on a short list of movies coming out soon to keep you entertained over the over the holiday break. Happy Holidays.

PAPER TWEET: Featuring Coach Fiegel. By Jake Barrett

Q: What Christmas present are you wishing for and why?A: Well, I have been wanting a new book; The Killing of Crazyhorse, because I’ve always been extremely interested in the nomadic lifestyle of the Sioux, and Crazyhorse was one of the most mysterious of the Sioux warriors. Also because the Sioux had a shirt award ceremony after a battle, which is like our Mr. Burn and Mr. Charge, and now Mr. Deflection, shirts that we award after a game that states the receiver is the ultimate warrior.

Page 6: Spartan Voice 7

Christmas is in 15 days, and there are tons of new gadgets popping up here and there, but it is the smart people who wait so they can get what they want without paying for it. If you are a Mac person, they haven’t quite stopped tossing new stuff out for you to throw your money at. The iPhone 4G came out a while ago, and it comes with a few new tricks from a decent battery to “face time,” all of these features make it a must have for anyone who isn’t willing to be content with their outdated iPhone. The new Macbook Air is out, and it has the whole Mac fan base biting at each other’s ankles. Then there are the iPads. Some of you may have them and some may be skeptical about actually getting one while others may think that it is just a stupid invention. My family has one, and I have used it a few times. Sure, it’s cool because of its touch screen, apps, and general size, but I just don’t see the advantage of having an iPad over having a laptop. It is basically just an expensive toy.

If you are a guy, video games are probably on your wish list. Some of the better recent games that look like they will be impressive include:

Fable III: definitely a good game to get if you feel like starting a revolution.

Star Wars: Force Unleashed II. looks like it will be one of the best single player games of the decade because of its action, graphics, epic-ness, and because it’s Star Wars. This is definitely on my wish list, and I am hoping to receive it, and I bet my brother wants it too.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. A series that never fails to impress the masses with its weapons, acrobatics, stealth, and now a new feature: friendship. Awww.

James Bond: Bloodstone. Cool. Uncontested.

Call of Duty: Black Ops. It looks like it will be just another CoD game. Okay, so the past two sentences I wrote before I played it. There is no doubt that I will buy/receive the game this December. It is a great game for anybody interested in first-person shooter games.

The next things on the list are two new controllers for the two biggest game consoles of the decade: Playstation Move and the Xbox Kinect. The Playstation Move looks like another Wii controller with a big ball at the end. Not too many good games out for it, making it pretty much useless if you have a Wii.

The Playstation Move claims to have a better responsiveness than the Wii-motes, even with the Wii Motion Plus! The Xbox Kinect on the other hand will be a brave new step into the future. It makes you the controller, and your movements are what happen on the screen, no clumsy controller in your hand. This would make it a must have for a party. But there are no great games yet. Just a pet game, a sport game, a dance game, and an adventure game are out so far. Pretty cool, but not very high on my list. Wait for the technology to advance a little further and the prices to drop a little bit lower before asking for one.

Sage Dining Not many schools are blessed with a dining service like Sage. We one of the few schools that get to enjoy choosing three different main courses every day. Now after briefly talking about the positive side of Sage, let’s bring up the “not so good side”. Many of our high school students arrive at school early and indulge on a breakfast sandwich provided by Sage for $1.50. Yes, almost everyone does love these breakfast sandwiches but would like to see even more variety for their breakfast. Zack Alvarez says “would it really kill Sage to throw in an Ego waffle or a pancake every once in a while, I mean come on they would probably charge $20 for them anyway.” Still others would like to see it if Sage provided a more wide variety of snack food for break. Would it be too much to ask for Sage to provide some other snacks besides Miss Vickie’s and parfaits? Hayley Cusick claims “Sage would benefit profoundly if they sold pop tarts and other tasty treats like that.” Oh, and while we are on the topic of choices, if you don’t like milk or soda, well your out of luck. Is it too much to ask for milk that people actually know and want? I mean Roberts Milk? What about Hiland or something organic, crazy? Since Sage doesn’t offer smoothies or anything, (which if you’re reading this Sage would probably be a good idea) you’re going to have to settle for water for the time being.

One of Sages most infuriating aspects is the extremely overpriced food. It’s not uncommon for some students to spend over $200 and sometimes in the $300 every month! So take that by the 8 months we are in school and those students can be spending $2,400 worth of food per year. If you are looking to cut back on your Sage expenses here are some helpful tips:

Instead of showing up early to school to eat swing by Burger King and try theirnew Breakfast Muffin Sandwich for $1 opposed to Sage’s for $1.50Also at Burger King try their delicious Cini Minis also only for $1You basketball players might also be interested in the many cheap Spangles options before hand.

If your getting tired of pizza and you don’t feel like a $4.50 5” sandwich you could always get a fresh foot-long from Jimmie John’s for $5 or a Mr. Goodcents sub for $5.50.And don’t feel bad about not supporting Sage like you used to-- apparently, “You need to figure out how the system works . . . we don’t need your money” Or at least Kesha thinks so. Any suggestions or ideas for food or topics you would like to hear about, please contact Spartan Voice.

Joy (sticks to the world) . . .continued

Black Friday is over, and so are your chances at great prices. If you

went shopping on Black Friday, you probably experienced the same feeling you get at a zoo. Luckily there were no local tramplings, but there were quite a few nation-wide. Most of them were as people rushed into Target stores. People feel so compelled to get a half-off

Xbox 360 that they are willing to either leave people to die, or trample over the helpless people on the floor themselves. People are screaming for their lives and hoping not to be trampled to death. It is definitely not in the spirit of Christmas to trample other people to buy stuff for yourself, or even other people.

Among high school students, cars are always popular gift ideas, but don’t expect to get one. Personally, I would rather hype myself up for something that I would actually get. I also have my own car, sort of, so I might as well not ask for one to raise my chances of getting other cool stuff. But of course, the Christmas Spirit is one of giving, not receiving, so go out there, be a good friend, and get stuff for your friends. Spend a day at the movies with your family. Do whatever makes you, your family, and your friends most happy. After all, happiness isn’t in what you get, but the people that give it to you.

The Time of Year

By Rachel Klingenberg,

Christmas time,

It’s the time of year for present wrapping, gift giving and carol

singing.

The time of year when families get together for the holidays and stay

cozy in their homes.

But most importantly it’s the biggest time of year for charity.

The time for thinking of others and not yourself for a change.

Goodwill fills the air with warm intentions,

Strangers become angels from out of the blue,

Helping hands hold the stragglers up,

No one is left behind if it can be helped.

However, along the course of the year the Christmas spirit gets lost.

Every day , every week, and every month should have the essence of

Christmas spirit within it.

WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR CHRISTMAS?

FINALSBY ALEX WALDECK

The countdown has begun for 1st semester finals. As of today there are only 2 more school days to study and review! In order to do well one must work as hard as one can and not procrastinate until the last minute. There are so many different ways to study for these intense tests. Tutorials at school, re-reading notes and study groups are sure fire ways to assist the studying process. Unfortunately, there won’t be any tutorial days this year, but on the upside we on;y have to take one final per day! Science, math and language are going to be the top priority for the next 2 days. On the 15th-17th finals will start at 10am and free dress is an option. Work hard and study your brains out! Put on your thinking caps and good luck everyone!Adam Lower’s advice to the underclassmen is: “Work hard kids! Turn your notes into art in your mind.”

On November 18th, I had the honor and pleasure to attend the midnight premier of the final installment of Harry Potter. I could write this and take the easy way out by saying all the actors were top notch, the story line was meritorious, and that the overall effect of the movie was excellent. However, I would much rather talk about the cultural significance of this movie and what the movie means to my generation.

This movie may seem like a simple conclusion to a series, but when one looks at the cultural significance of the movie, one finds that Harry Potter is much more.. When I was sitting in the movie, tired, anxious, and excited, I contemplated what this movie really meant to me. I thought back to my childhood when I grew up watching the Harry otter movies since the early 2000’s, when I read and re-read all of the Harry Potter books cover to cover. I went back to the time when the first few weeks of summer were shear misery because I had to wait until the next installment of the series finally came out, or the few days after the book

came out when my older brother would read the book before I could because we only had one copy. I thought about all the times I had stayed up way past my 9:00 bedtime anticipating each and every page. While sitting in my chair with a nostalgic look on my face, I realized that this movie meant so much more to me. I grew up with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville and even Lord Voldemort.

I then set my sights on July 15, 2011 when the second installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will premier in the theaters. by the time the next movie comes out, I will have graduated from high school, I will have turned 18, and I will be less than a month and a half away from moving to college. the end of Harry Potter really represents the end of an era of my life. I feel that childhoods really begin in the first grade, when we start having responsibilities and decisions to make, and ends with the graduation from high school. I think about a lot of huge moments in my childhood and, when I picture most of these moments in my mind, I can see a Harry Potter book in my lap.

I got home Friday morning at 3:00 am and, instead of going to bed like every other normal person, I went straight to my closet and just started looking through all of my Harry Potter books, all hard copies, all originals, all in their sleeves. I looked at various stains, folds and creases and all of my memories came rushing back. I am glad that I choose something so special in which to store my childhood memories. Of course, the movie was very good. I was thoroughly pleased with WarnerBros.’ interpretation of Harry Potter and I will surely go and see it again. To conclude, I would like to give a message to Harry Potter from everyone in my generation:

Dear Harry,

I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been growing up with you. We laughed, we cried, and we had a lot of fun. Although I will greatly miss you, I understand that all things must come to an end. If my childhood has to end in any way, I would be honored to end it while watching you defeat Lord Voldemort once-and-for-all.

Thanks again and best wishes.
