THE SPARTAN VOICE VOLUME 5, ISSUE 6 NOVEMBER 18, 2011 WICHITA COLLEGIATE SCHOOL DIGITAL EDITION:WWW.THESPARTANVOICE.BLOGSPOT.COM SPARTAN BASKETBALL SEASON WARMS-UP By Riley Kemmer Collegiate’s basketball tradition is second to none. After six straight years of exceptional teams and seasons there are definitely numerous questions circulating about this year’s team and approaching season. A lot of negative criticism has started to surround the team, things being said like: “you can’t beat 4A teams,” “You’re not deep enough to win close games”, “You don’t have a go to guy” and questions about substitutions, depth, and the state tournament have also arisen. Many of these questions remain unanswered and will remain so until the beginning of the season. But is clear that many things will change, but who says they will be for the worse? In fact this year the team is returning six varsity members, which happens to be just as many as the last few years, and we suffer no lack of senior leadership. Along with two all- league players from last season. Trace Clark, anyone? Incredibly, the returning second wave from last year brings eleven years of varsity experience to the court every night, and this is no small feat. Gene Keady once said, quoted by Coach Fiegel, “All you need to be good is: A good point guard, a good post, a few good shooters and a couple good athletes to play defense.” Well matter of fact, that’s exactly what the Spartans bring to the table this year. And don’t forget that amazing student section led by Joey to cheer them on. So be careful before you underestimate this year’s team because they are here to give 4A a run for their money. THANK YOU COACH FOR 16 YEARS OF SPARTAN FOOTBALL

SPARTANBASKETBALL SEASON

WARMS-UPBy Riley Kemmer

Collegiate’s basketball tradition is second to none. After six straight years of exceptional teams and seasons there are definitely numerous questions circulating about this year’s team and

approaching season. A lot of negative criticism has started to surround the team, things being said like: “you can’t beat 4A teams,” “You’re not deep enough to win

close games”, “You don’t have a go to guy” and questions about substitutions, depth, and the state tournament have also arisen. Many of these questions remain

unanswered and will remain so until the beginning of the season. But is clear that many things will change, but who says they will be for the worse? In fact this year the team is

returning six varsity members, which happens to be just as many as the last few years, and we suffer no lack of senior leadership. Along with two all-league players from last season. Trace

Clark, anyone? Incredibly, the returning second wave from last year brings eleven years of varsity

experience to the court every night, and this is no

small feat. Gene Keady once said, quoted by Coach Fiegel, “All you need to be good is: A good point guard, a good post, a few good shooters and a couple good athletes to play defense.” Well matter of fact, that’s exactly what the Spartans bring to

the table this year. And don’t forget that amazing student section led by Joey to cheer them on. So be careful before you underestimate this year’s team because they are here to give 4A a run for their money.

Can you identify with the stereotypical humor of a guy? What about that of asorority girl? Maybe the bitingly sarcastic remarks of a affluent Jewish girl wholives in the heart of Manhattan will produce a little chuckle. Regardless of who one

resonates with, there is undoubtedly a twitter page for it.For instance, take the infamous White Girl of White Girl Problems(@whitegrlproblem). This “ white girl” who is otherwise known as Babe Walker, boasts nearly half a million followers and regularly tweets about her “strife” asbeing a white girl. Ironically her “struggles” sound more like the snarky comments

of a queen bee. Just try to imagine the comments “Regina George” and generalizethem as opposed to direct them. The caustic tweets naturally become infectiouslypopular. In retaliation to trends like these, two WCS students have created twitterprofiles that are unofficially related to the “strife” of a WCS student. These two

students have anonymously created pages WCSGirlProbs and WCSBoyProbs.Although these accounts are not officially linked to the school, it is a fun forumwhere students can tweet and identify with the attitudes and feelings with that oftheir fellow WCS Girls and Boys. These two pages have been gaining popularity among the students who use

Twitter. It is a place where students can look for empathy with real WCS problems(To wear Uggs, or not to wear Uggs). However, it is most commonly used as amoral support forum for homework over-load. It will be interesting to see if thisTwitter phenomena will prove itself long term or as the “tweeter” behind the pagePrepSchoolProb would put it, so last season.

#15By Elly Vosburgh.

On Tuesday, November 15th senior Torrie Rupe signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. Torrie committed verbally previously this year and is attending on a partial scholarship.

As the only senior on this year’s Spartan volleyball squad, Torrie lead the team throughout the entire season to a 22-14 record. Torrie started varsity all four years, playing both outside and middle hitter. In 2009, she helped the Spartans win their

first ever state volleyball title. This year, she was named to the AVCTL first team despite playing through the entire season with a shoulder injury. Torrie is only the second volleyball player at Collegiate to sign to a college and has without a

doubt been one of the best players Collegiate has ever had.

Freshmen Dinner Theater: The ExperienceBy Parth Khare On Thursday, October 10 the mission launched. What was the mission? It was the common goal among students, teachers, and parents to fund raise money together. With flawless art lining the walls, depicting the smallest detail and demonstrating the countless number of hours spent, and wonderful deserts boasting it’s creators talent into eyes of the one who dares see them, it was impossible to leave. If one dares to continue in, he is met by more flawless art on the walls, a chandelier hanging above, and tables decorated with a waiter at the end ready to take his order. The apparel worn by the waiter and waitresses brought the flavor of the 1937 and 1938 back. Then the food came. The fabulous dinner consisting of chicken and many other things pleased all. As the dinner was being quickly eaten, a student gave a speech thanking everyone for coming and supporting the class. Then, the auction began. A professional volunteer auctioneer came and began the auction. As the auction continued, an number of bids came through on each item and winners claimed their glorious prize; desert. After the meal and action were over, and onslaught of people rushed to grab seats in the auditorium to watch The Sound Of Music. All three days, the students in the dinner, and actors and the crew in the play did a phenomenal job. But most of all, the Class of 2015 would like to thank the parents, Mrs Thiel, and other teachers for their amazing job in contributing countless number of hours to put this together. Without them, this could not have been possible. Good Job everyone and I shall leave you with one last note: GO SPARTANS!!

Congratulations to the Cast of

The Sound of MusicWichita Collegiate’s The

Sound Of MusicBy: Christy Peterson

Through the many practices and long rehearsals, The Sound Of Music turned out great! Casting the seniors: Lindsey Wells as Maria, Hunter Morris as Captain Von Trap, and India Cohlmia as Elsa Schrader. The rehearsals sometimes lasted for five hours of hard work. A production has many behind the scene elements like painting sets, tech crews, directors, costuming, and the orchestra. Without these people a show would not happen.Practices did take up weekends and late nights but in the end it was worth it. It was great to see how the show pulled together in such a short time. Musicals are also a good way for cast members to bond and work together. Each show night continued to get better. The musical was a great experience and I look forward to next year.

Thanks for Giving Us GamesBy: Jake Barrett

These past few weeks have been paradise for video-game-playing hedonistseverywhere. There have been big-name releases for every platform available, and there are tons of great choices to pick from. The titles released range anywhere fromassassinations to gunning things down and blowing them up.Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is hot off the press, and already receives greataccolades as G4TV rates it a four out of five the day it comes out. In it, you can play asthe three protagonists previously seen in the series: Altaïr, Desmond, and Eizo. The goalis to ultimately attempt to end the reign of evil in the world by killing somebody inConstantinople at the apex of the Ottoman Empire. Enjoy everything from casual killings to taking on swarms of guards one on twelve on your choice of platform. One that everyone seems to be obsessed with is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,which received a five out of five from G4TV. It is basically a tweaked CoDMod2 withupdated graphics and combat and all of the downsides of Mod2 taken out. Though it doeshave a better story and pace than the others, and the guns are better in general, the mapsfor multiplayer are bad. This is a good game to play online with friends and compete forbragging rights over multiple platforms. My personal favorite game at the moment is next: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Thisis the latest installment of the Elder Scrolls series and it is stealing the lives of millionsworldwide, captivating critics as well, receiving top ratings from every major review. This game puts you in a fully deplorable world the size of Georgia, with almost a doublein size with caves, mines, dungeons, castles, forts, and hideouts. Best compared to Lordof the Rings, though you can do anything you

want. There is also no need to buy anyother games for the next year because this game boasts 400+ hours of game-play, and the game itself even generates new things for you to do as you play. So if you feel likeslaying some dragons, stealing stuff, exploring caves, assassinating people, blacksmithing, cooking, mining, traveling, or even having riveting dialogues with people, buy this game.Last off is a preview for all Legend of Zelda fans about the upcoming title,Skyward Sword for the Wii. The Wii-mote technology is stunning in this game, as youswing the remote; Link swings the sword in the same direction and angle, making combatmore exciting. You might even break a sweat while killing some skeletons or spiders inthis game that also has an enormous world. You even get a gigantic red bird to fly on.Though this will probably follow the typical Zelda storyline, it will still be timeless andalways fun.So all in all, these past few weeks have been heaven for gamers. The onlyproblem that presents itself is which one to pick. I personally went with Skyim, and Iplan on getting Skyward Sword when it comes out, but those two games should tide meover for about four to six months, and by that time, Mass Effect 3 will have come out, maybe even the fabled Guild Wars 2. Enjoy the games over Thanksgiving, and put themon your wish-lists for Christmas… Have fun!

On November 5th at 10:53 P.M. there was slippage along the Nemaha fault about 45 miles east of Oklahoma City. This slippage caused the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that was felt from Kansas City to Dallas. According to Oklahoma police several 911 calls were made after the quake but there were no injuries.  Unfortunately, several pictures did fall from the walls.  This earthquake was the biggest quake along this fault line since 1952, when slippage along this fault caused an earthquake.  The Nemaha fault coolly enough is very mysterious to scientists.  This fault does not have a history of quakes and is relatively calm. The fault itself not only runs through Topeka but continues on to Lincoln, Nebraska.  According to the U.S. Geological Survey there is only a 3 to 4% chance of another quake occurring along this fault with in the next 100 years. So this Thanksgiving if you feel your house shaking it is most likely not another Quake, but instead it might be that your fat uncle who stole the last crescent roll just fell over. By Bell Schwartz

Today, November 18, 2011 is Joey O'Hara's 18th birthday! Please wish him a happy birthday!! We need to make sure that he has a great day, just as he has made sure we have had a great year. Homecoming king, leader in the stands, and hands down the most well known name in high school, Joey is like a bubble that is about to burst but hasn't burst yet, always creating anticipation and excitement. He makes sports events about much more than the game, but an atmosphere of passionate support. So on this day, it is our duty to repay him, and give him the most magical day of his life. It will not be easy; his day begins at school at 7:15 to watch act two of "Waiting For Godot," so we must tenaciously uplift. When you see him passing in the hall way today, reflect back to the explosive enthusiasm he displayed at every football game and greet him with the same zeal!!!! (or the best you can do).
