Catholic Services Appeal CSA This weekend we will have a s p e c i a l

prerecorded talk from our new

Archbishop Allen Vigneron regarding the Catholic Services Appeal of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Over the past few years, we have been just making our

target. Once we go over our target, everything comes back to the parish free of the regular Archdiocesan tax. It is a really good thing for us to go over.

The CSA provides many services to the parish that are a cost savings. The CSA

also provides for programs that are beyond the scope of any individual parish, like the education of future priests, deacons, and lay ministers.

The Archbishop has undertaken a reorganization of the offices of the

Archdiocese to provide better service and to cut costs. In this effort during his first year as our archbishop, he truly deserves our strong show of support. I encourage you to be especially generous

addition to my regular Sunday offering through Faith Direct and my support to the Master Plan with my second $10,000 pledge, I annually support the CSA with a personal pledge of $1,500 that I pay off

throughout the year. This is all part of my personal tithing plan. I encourage everyone to have a planned approach to giving so as to return to God our tithe of all that He has given to us.

In the sacristy, all of the coat of arms of the bishops and archbishops of the Church of Detroit who have served since the establishment of the National Shrine of the Little Flower are hand-painted on panels. In this edition of the Herald, you will

find an article on Mr. Phil Savaglio who volunteers his time and talent to keep this part of our history up to date. It is a slow and arduous process, but Phil does it with real love and devotion for his church. For all of you and for myself as well, I express our deep gratitude.

Pontiac Parishes The Archbishop has appointed Father James Kean as the pastor of the Pontiac Catholic Community. I am most grateful for this. However, Father Kean will not

become pastor until July 1 of this year. For the next two months, I will remain the Administrator of the parishes in Pontiac. During this time, I am working in close contact with the future pastor. It is my responsibility to implement many of the recommendations of the audit of the Archdiocese, to correct and streamline the business operations, and to bring about the merger of the parishes into one unit.

There are still many tough decisions to carry out so that the new pastor steps into a workable situation. Having worked with them since the beginning of the year, I am convinced that the Pontiac Catholic Community under the leadership of their new pastor is on the verge of very positive growth and a renewal of vision. Keep me in your prayers over the next two months.

Pilgrimage Our Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in October is progressing nicely. There are still

openings for more pilgrims. If you are interested and have questions, please contact me. The program is available in the vestibules of the church or on line at the National Shrine website.

Rosie & Carlito Rosie is happy now that spring is springing up all over. Soon there will be roses, her favorite flower. I wonder why?

Undergraduate studies at Sacred Heart Major Seminary are not free for future

Attention Gardeners! It's Spring This message is for anyone who is interested in joining our gardening group, and all of the returning gardeners. The spring cleanup has been done for us

this year.

We would like to have just a short meeting on Monday, May 4 at 7 pm. Please meet in the Grotto area. At that time, we can firm up your existing area, and for new gardeners to adopt a spot.

Please do not feel like you have to be an expert or

have a green thumb to participate. If being outside, getting your hands dirty, and literally seeing the fruits of your labor is up your alley we can help you out.

There are plenty of areas that are available, roses that need attention throughout the summer, or we could use people that just want to weed.

If you are unable to come to the meeting on May 4, please call so that we can make other arrangements to give returning gardeners your spot and assign new gardeners with what you may want to do. Thank you!

Bishop Coat of Arms The National Shrine Church is blessed with many volunteers, all doing many different kinds of

projects. Many of these good deeds go unnoticed, but they are very important to the daily running of the church.

Phil Savaglio, a long time member of the National Shrine

(since 1960) just completed one of those unusual volunteer protects. He painted Archbishop Allen H.

fourth coat of arms that Phil has done, which includes Bishops

Dearden, Szoka and Maida. Beatrice Wilczynski our famous National Shrine artist painted Bishops Gallagher and Mooney coat of arms.

Phil learned this painting process from Beatrice back in 1980. She responded to him in a

letter explaining the many step procedure: you first have to remove the finish from the panel as the oil from the wood would bleed through the fresh paint,

then sand the wood area, next you apply six coats of Gesso (you must sand between each coat) and then you can start to apply the final paint colors. The entire process takes about five

to six weeks to complete.

You might remember

played our National Shrine organ for many years. They were married in 1958 and she encouraged him to do the coats of arms back in 1980.

Cross Connections HS Youth Ministry

This weekend our teens will be working on the homes that we did not get to last weekend due to rain. Life Matters

continues to deal with the tragedy of abortion, she faces not only a sin against life, but a sin against hope. We

grip of despair. Even if she knows abortion is wrong, as most do, she sees no other way out. She, too, is in grief.

It can blind us to the value of the child. It can also blind us to the presence of the Lord. He walks with us in our grief, and He asks us to share it with Him so He can remove it forever. Just as the Lord was present on the first Easter to those who thought they had lost Him, so is He present today to those who grieve. He is present to

those whose fear and despair are so great that they have their own children killed. The Lord is present to

Lord walked with His grieving disciples. We provide hope. We speak her name, we break bread with her, we lead her to the company of the other disciples, we bring her to the strength of the Eucharist. Abortion will flee

National Shrine Boy Scout News The National Shrine of the Little Flower Boy Scout troop will be camping at the West Point Military Academy from May 1 through 3. The boys will be

participating in cadet-led physical training and other activities such as Wilderness Survival and Land Navigation. We ask you to pray for their safety. The scouts owe this unique adventure to Mr. Warren Palmer, former ScoutMaster and proud father of the two cadets who are sponsoring our

troop. Special thanks also to current ScoutMasters Mike Keith, Chris Ehlen, Pat Krease, and Joe Romano for the many hours they have committed to prepare the scouts and parents for a good showing in West Point.


Notice CPR & AED Training This notice is specifically for current National Shrine AED Responders and to those National Shrine parishioners who would like to receive CPR & AED training to become a member of the National Shrine AED Responders. At this time, there are 63 individuals who originally received training and/or refresher

training at National Shrine AED Responders and must now receive refresher training to keep up on new CPR guidelines and reacquaint you on the use of the AED.

Two dates in May have been scheduled with A-1 Health & Safety Education, to provide current National Shrine AED Responders with refresher training and any parishioners wanting to become a new National Shrine AED Responder member with Adult/Child CPR & AED training according to American Heart Association guidelines. The training provided is designed for lay rescuers, with no prior medical

experience necessary. Additionally, there is no testing involved for completion of this training and no certification issued. Knowing that it is critical to get current and new National Shrine AED Responders to training for the benefit of National Shrine parishioners, special arrangements have been made for these training sessions, so that there is no cost to you to receive the training. All training will take place in the National Shrine Conference Center Seton Hall and you only need to attend one of the training sessions.

The CPR & AED Training Dates Are As Follows:

Training Session #1: Saturday, May 16, 10 am to 1 pm; and

Training Session #2: Thursday, May 21, from 6 to 9 pm.

What You Need To Do: Please! - All current National Shrine AED Responders who received CPR & AED training at the National Shrine previously and those wanting to become a new AED Responder need to do this. Select one of the above training dates which you can attend and contact Rick Lowery, by phone or email to let me know of your choice, and please leave your phone number. If you are able to attend

either training session, let me know that also, with your preference. This will allow us to balance the class sizes if necessary. Contact Rick, by Wednesday May 13, if you are attending the Saturday, May 16 session, and by Monday, May 18, if you are attending the Thursday, May 21 session.

Knights of Columbus A special thank you goes out to all of our Brother Knights, Squires, wives and children who helped this year with the tootsie roll sale for the mentally challenged citizens of our community. We also thank all of those parish members who made any donation towards this worthy cause. This is an annual event for us and this year we raised over

$5,400 for those citizens who are mentally challenged. With all of the budget cuts and the rough economy in Michigan, the need for monetary help is greater than it has been in years past. Again, thank you, everyone, who helped in any way with this event.

The Knights of Columbus welcomes our recent RCIA graduates. We congratulate you on the completion of your course of study and acceptance into the Church. We challenge you to continue to grow spiritually and to put your faith into practice.

On Saturday morning we hosted our annual soccer challenge event. It was held at the Shrine Catholic HS athletic field. Thanks to all Brother Knights who came out to help prepare the nets, judge the competition or help with registration. Your assistance was greatly

appreciated. We would be out of line if we didn't let SK Norm Brault know that he did a great job again this year pulling together all the pieces to make this event successful.

We welcome our newest members who joined our ranks on April 13 in Madison Heights. Welcome Brother Knight Ryan Addams ( seminarian); Brother Knight Scott Chaney.

Last Sunday, several members of the council had the privilege of attending the investiture service for our newest Squires members. We welcomed 10 new boys to the Squires Circles in the Archdiocese of Detroit. We share a common greeting with our boys, "Esto Dignus ", which means Be Worthy. We know that each of these hard working boys will accept the challenge and serve their parish community well. Over the years, we have

come to know and appreciate all of the hard work done by our Chief Squires Counselor, SK Joe Chase. As our circle continues to grow, we have need of assistance with a father or Brother Knight who would be willing to serve as an assistant Counselor for our kids. If you are interested, curious, or just want to know more, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will gladly spend the necessary time to answer your questions.

The Knights of Columbus Council at the National Shrine Parish administers a scholarship award on an annual basis for a deserving student. The scholarship is named after our departed BK Frank Ward and his wife Mary who served the parish community faithfully for many years. With the help of their daughters we award the scholarship money to an incoming Shrine Catholic

Academy student. The scholarship is based on need. We

ask that the students applying have a good GPA. Applications are due to the Academy office by May 1 and can be obtained and returned to Matt York.

This Tuesday is our bi-monthly meeting. We are going to dispense with the formalities of the meeting structure and have an evening of guest speakers slated to address the parish and council members on a variety of subjects. We will talk about Catechism

classes for special needs children; Maria Ward with Matt York will talk about the scholarship and its requirements; and we will have people available who can answer questions about the Knights of Columbus and what we do. The whole evening will start at 7:30 pm in the National Shrine Conference Center and is open to all parish members.

In May, we will host an evening prayer service in honor of Mary, patroness of the Americas. The Our Lady of Charity icon will again visit National Shrine parish on its journey from Havana, Cuba. It will visit each parish in the United States where there is a Knights of Columbus presence.

This year we will again march in the Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade. All Brother Knights are welcome to walk with us as we show our respect for those

veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.
