This will be their first time to the US and their first time on a plane. They will be with us until July 1. During their visit, they will be staying in Father’s apartment in the rectory. We hope that their visit will be a wonderful experience and that they will truly enjoy themselves. This will give them an opportunity to spend time with their son and to see where he works as a priest. We are very happy to have them staying with us and want them to feel at home. I know that they must feel a little anxious on their first trip abroad and away from home. Because they never had the opportunity or need to learn English, they will have to rely on their son for translations. Knowing Father Maka’s sense of humor, he may just tell them what he wants them to know and leave out what he does not want them to know. He has also been known to say outrageous things just to tease. I wish there were a quick way to learn Polish. The old convent will start to come down this week. They tell me “The Big Claw” will arrive on Tuesday. A couple of people have said that it is a shame the building could not be saved. I agree. However, in order to bring the building up to present code, to provide all the safety requirements, and to make the building barrier free, the cost would have been prohibitive. It was designed to be a convent and it served this purpose well. It was not designed as a meeting center, community hall, homeless shelter and everything else we have crammed into the space over the past years. If we had tried to update it, all the new laws and modern building codes would have come into play. I believe we were wisely advised that to attempt to save the present structure would have been a very expensive nightmare with unsatisfying results. We move forward. The new Conference Center in the strip mall is now in full use. There are three meeting rooms presently called A, B, and C. The volunteers who work of the Shrine Lending Library have moved the entire library to Conference Room C in the new center. The Parish Council and other commissions will most often meet in Conference Room A. There is also a large meeting room which is larger than anything we had in the old convent. It has presently been referred to as the Main Meeting Room. I would like to suggest that we refer to it as the Elizabeth Ann Seton Room, or Seton Hall, or something that keeps the memory of the many Sisters of Charity who served our parish throughout the years. Any suggestions? In any event, the volunteers for Funeral Lunches will again be able to provide their services in this new area. Work has begun in the Coughlin Building to transform it into the permanent Adoration Chapel. We are doing everything we can to expedite this work knowing that the present temporary arrangement leaves a lot to be desired. As soon as school is out, work will also begin at the high school and academy. The first stage will be the updating of one science room on the third floor along with laying the groundwork for continued changes next year. The preparation process is long and involved, requiring permits and the review of proposed changes by numerous committees and groups. As always, something worth doing is worth doing well with an eye to the future. In the near future, interior work will begin on the barrier free access of the church entrance near the Saint Joseph altar. More information on that will be in upcoming issues of the Shrine Herald. Graduation and Promotion This Monday evening, June 6, we will celebrate Mass and graduation with the eighth grade academy students. This year, a larger percentage of students will continue on to Shrine Catholic High School giving us one of the larger ninth grade classes in recent history. On Wednesday evening, June 8, we will celebrate Mass and promotion with the present sixth grade class as they move on to the next stage of their education in the academy. As a parish, we can be proud of all these students. Their Christ centered Catholic education is only possible with the support of the entire parish community. Shrine Catholic Schools are not just alternate education. They are first and most importantly Christ-centered and Catholic. The schools and a flourishing Religious Education Program are our investment in the future of the Church. A Family PerspectiveToday’s Gospel is about SEEING. Jesus “saw Matthew” and accepted

him. But, the “Pharisees saw Jesus” and wanted to change him. How wesee others, especially in our families, is our choice. If we “see” them as aproblem, we will treat them as a problem; if we see them as a gift, we willtreasure them.

Let’s Talk…Family PlanningJune is traditionally the month for weddings. Do you

know what the Statement of Intentions is at a Catholicwedding ceremony? There are three questions asked of thebride and groom that have a connection to natural familyplanning. Part of the first question asks if the couple will “givethemselves to each other.” In “giving themselves,” they givetheir bodies to each other to become one in marriage.

The second question is will they “love and honor eachother?” A more commonly used word for honor is respect. The couple is asked to respect each other, including theirfertility and infertility. They do not ask each other to doanything that would harm their natural fertility.

The third question is will they “accept children lovingly?”There is no limit to the number of children. There are noconditions as to when children are invited into their family.

To be married in the Catholic Church, couples answeryes to these three questions. Do they realize what yes means? For more information on how natural family planning helpscouples live out these three Statements of Intentions, checkout our web page at www.nfponline.org or call 313.237.4679.

the guinea pig has established a playful and affectionate relationship withFather Jarosz. According to Father Jarosz, she needs human contact. Sincehe has been feeding both her and Kajtek and taking care of them, it is onlynatural that she has transferred her affections. I only hope that FatherMaka does not bring suit against Father Jarosz for alienation of affection. It will be interesting to see her reaction when Father Maka returns.

Our drama club, headed by parentMr. Joe LaBella, staged a wonderful play entitled“A Cable Fable” (written by Mr. LaBella). All ofour actors and actresses truly did shine! We alsowere fortunate to listen to our own bandstudents, as well as the high school concert andjazz bands, at a recent afternoon concert. A Teaching Moment…What is Mercy?Jesus tells us He desires mercy, not sacrifice.

What exactly does this mean? The Pharisees were

notorious for following the letter of the law. Ritual

and sacrifice were to be adhered to—showing little

compassion towards the sinner or those

considered “unclean.” Jesus, on the other hand,

calls us to be merciful. This week, read and reflect

on the Letter of James 2:1-23. As followers of Christ,

we are called to put our faith in action. As a family,

put into practice the words of James 2:18, 2:18, “I

will demonstrate my faith to you from my works,”

and take part in an activity that extends mercy to

those in need, such as donating gently used

clothing to a shelter or visiting someone who is ill

or homebound. When we become the face of

Christ to others, we bring the Gospel message of

Jesus to life.

Tenth Sunday in OrdinaryTime: “I desire mercy, notsacrifice.”Hosea 6:3-6, Romans 4:18-25, Matt 9:9-13

This week’s readings focus on mercyand compassion, giving us a clear pictureof Jesus’ mission and ministry. In the firstreading from the prophet Hosea, theauthor questions the faithfulness andfidelity of the tribes of Israel, citing that“Your piety is like a morning cloud, like thedew that early passes away” (Hosea 6:4).In contrast to Hosea’s writing, St. Paulwrites in his letter to the Romans ofAbraham’s faithfulness. Abraham does notdoubt God’s promise to make him thefather of many nations, despite the factthat he is old and his wife, Sarah, is barren.

God’s greatness and power are beyond man’s comprehension. Even thoughGod’s promises to Abraham defy logic, Abraham does not judge the situation, but rather, places his trust in God.

Matthew’s Gospel further illustrates this point, showing us that God’s loveextends to all. In Jesus’ selection of Matthew as a disciple and the Lord’s diningat Matthew’s house, He teaches us that it is not up to man to judge others.Instead, we are called to have faith in God and through our actions showcompassion and mercy towards others.

When Jesus invites Matthew to follow Him and then dines with him, Hesets convention on its ear. Tax collectors were known as notorious cheatersemployed by the Roman government. By Jewish standards, tax collectors wereunclean. Anyone associating with such people would also be consideredunclean and judged unfit to be part of the community. The Pharisees takeissue with Jesus’ actions, questioning His disciples. Jesus overhears theirconversation and addresses the Pharisees directly, quoting the words of theprophet Hosea: “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did notcome to the righteous but sinners” (Matt 9:13). The Pharisees, well versed inScripture, were probably not pleased at the Lord’s accusation that the Phariseeswere not following the teachings of Scripture.

On the other hand, when Jesus approaches Matthew, who is sitting athis customs post, Jesus commands the tax collector to “Follow Me.” Matthewdoes so without hesitation. The Gospel writer does not indicate that Matthewhad great faith—only that he obeyed Jesus. Perhaps Matthew responded outof pride. After all, Jesus was inviting Matthew the tax collector, unclean andunscrupulous, to be with Him. Perhaps Matthew obeyed because Jesus treatedhim with dignity. Jesus also dined with Matthew and an unclean cast ofcharacters, sending a clear message that Lord did not judge others by man’sstandards. What the Pharisees did not realize is that we are all sinners, placingour own needs before those of others. When we focus only on ourselves, weoften show little compassion for those around us. Jesus calls us to a higherstandard. Jesus’ mission is one of inclusion, not exclusion.

In reflecting on the Scripture and our actions, how many times have wejudged someone unfairly or passed by the opportunity to serve someone inneed? What is the underlying message in this week’s readings? It is not ourplace to judge whether or not people are worthy of our love, but to followJesus’ example and treat everyone with compassion and mercy.
