Remodeling your homeis uniquely differentfrom building a newhome. With remodeling, your home becomes theworksite. You live side-by-side with the projectfrom start to finish. Onceconstruction begins, you'll probably long forsimple pleasures like adust-free home or a fullyfunctioning kitchen orbath. But the end resultwill be well worth theseinconveniences.

CommunicationConsistent and opencommunication betweenyou and your remodelerwill enhance your under-standing of the project, provide an opportunity toexchange ideas, and ulti-mately help to make theexperience a positive onefor everyone involved. To facilitate this process, you need to:Determine who youand your remodelershould contact for dailydecisions or an after-hours emergency. Designate a backup foreach contact person toassure continuity in any-one's absence.Create a place in yourhouse where the contactpersons can leave mes-sages for each other (asecurely anchored note-book is a good idea sinceit is less likely to disap-pear).Speak up. If you are

uncertain about any as-pect of the project, besure to let the contactperson know. The Pre-Construction

MeetingOne way to ensure thesuccess of your project isto plan for and activelyparticipate in a pre-con-struction meeting. Thisallows your remodeler toclarify procedures andexplain how the job willprogress. It also offersboth you and your re-modeler an opportunityto prepare for those is-sues that may arise later. You should think of thismeeting as a forum forall participants to definetheir expectations andagree on the anticipatedoutcome. Some of the issues youmay wish to cover at thismeeting include:Will you allow your re-modeler to place a com-pany sign on yourproperty? Rememberthat, in addition to beinga marketing tool, signshelp contractors and sup-pliers locate your home. What areas of yourhome will be off limits toworkers?Does your house havean alarm system? Willworkers need a key orwill someone always bethere? How will you ensurethat your children andpets stay out of the work

space? How willtrash re-moval behan-dled?Wherewill theremod-eler locatethe dumpsteron your property?Does the remodeler an-ticipate any interruptionsof utilities during theproject? If so, when andfor how long? At certainstages of construction, the project may affectbasic household necessi-ties like water and elec-tricity. Will you need tovacate the house at anytime? What are your expecta-tions regarding clean up?Will sweeping be suffi-cient for a daily cleaning,or will you need a morethorough cleaning inorder to use the space? You should also use thepre-construction meetingto establish guidelinesfor the remodeling crewworking on the project:Determine who youand your remodelershould contact for dailydecisions or an after-hours emergency. For ex-ample, your contact maybe the lead carpenter forthe job, while the remod-eler's contact could beyour spouse. What times will work-

ers begin and end workat your home? Be

sure to considerthe neighborsas well ashouseholdmembers. Where

can workerspark near the

jobsite? Will you allow workersto use your phone forlocal business calls? Will bathroom facilitiesin your home be avail-able to workers? What is the remodeler'spolicy on smoking on thejobsite? What is the remodeler'spolicy on the use of pro-fanity? If you are espe-cially sensitive to thisissue, you should letyour remodeler know. Will you allow workersto play their radios at areasonable volume? Arethere any stations or pro-grams that you do notwant played?

Preventing Remodeling Fever

The train-station at-mosphere of a remodel-ing project can lead toremodeling fever. Themain symptom of thistemporary affliction isfeeling a loss of controlthat results from dis-rupted routines and theimpact on your personalspace. The best way toprevent this fever is toprepare well, remember

that "this too shall pass,"and focus on the progressbeing made. A few othersuggestions from remod-eling pros:Prepare for inconven-ience. A remodeling proj-ect can turn your homeand — on some days —your life upside down. Akitchen remodel will, ofcourse, affect meal plan-ning. But a little ingenu-ity and some culinaryshortcuts can lessen theimpact. Set up a tempo-rary cooking quarters bymoving the refrigerator, toaster oven, and mi-crowave to anotherroom. Arrange a dish-washing station in yourlaundry room. If theweather is warm, fire upthe grill and dine al-fresco.Designate a safe havenin your home where youcan escape from thechaos and commotion.Guard against dust.During a remodelingproject, dust has the un-fortunate tendency to ap-pear everywhere fromlampshades to platesstacked inside yourkitchen cabinets. To keepout as much dust as pos-sible: 1) Seal off door-ways and stairs; 2) Turnoff central air or heatwhen workers are sand-ing and stock up on extrafilters so that you canchange them often; 3)Have deliveries made

though a designated en-trance; 4) Use doormatsand temporary floor cov-erings where appropriate;5) Remove anything thatmight get damaged bythe dust or at least coverit with plastic drop clothsthat are taped shut.Maintain a sense ofhumor, Remember thatcertain things are out ofyour control and it's bestto laugh rather than upsetyourself about things likethe weather or delayeddelivery of materials.See the remodelingprocess as an adventure.Tell the kids that you are"camping in" and trans-form inconvenience intofun. Along the way, cele-brate as different stagesof the project are com-pleted.For more informationon choosing a profes-sional remodeler andmanaging every phase ofyour remodeling project,be sure to contact theMoore County HomeBuilders Association at(910)944-2992 or visit usonline atwww.mchba.com.

(ARA) - Doesmaintaining a lush, healthy and greenlawn to enjoy withfriends and familyseem daunting? It'soften a task that iseasier said than donefor homeowners. Buttake heart, a simplewatering routine canhelp grass thrive. Natural grass hasbeen cultivated to en-dure a wide variety ofconditions and hasthe added benefit ofbeing capable of self-repair. Remember, there's no need to cre-

ate a complex systemto maintain yourlawn. In fact, it onlytakes a little planningand monitoring to notonly keep your lawnin tip-top shape, butreduce your water useand save money. Are you ready to getyour lawn in perfectcondition? GrassSeed USA, a coali-tion of Americangrass seed farmers, has developed a setof six tips to helphomeowners conquerwatering fears andget the most out of

their yards. Followthese simple wateringtips: 1. Water only whennecessary. Manyhomeowners overwater their lawns, which does moreharm than good. Asimple trick to deter-mine whether yourlawn needs wateringis to insert a screw-driver into the grass. If it enters the soileasily, your lawn hasplenty of water al-ready. If you havetrouble getting thescrewdriver into the

ground, it is time togive it a drink.2. Mow grass to aheight of 2 to 2.5

inches. Keeping grassslightly taller in hotand dry conditionsprovides shade to theroots and soil surface, reducing the waterlost due to evapora-tion.3. Water throughoutthe season. Grassneeds a consistentwatering schedule, and starting and stop-ping a watering pat-tern can stunt yourlawn's growth. This isespecially true rightafter fertilizing. Onceyou start a routine, stick with it. 4. Allow the soil todry. A thorough wa-tering once or twice aweek is preferable tolightly misting everyday. Allowing the soilto dry before water-ing again encouragesthe roots to growdeeper into the soiland can help the lawnbecome drought-tol-erant in the future. 5. Make sure youwater your lawn, notthe air. Adjust your

sprinkler settings toproduce larger dropscloser to the groundrather than misting inthe air. Air currentscan easily catch lightsprays and keep thewater from reachingyour grass.6. Water duringcooler hours. Earlymorning and earlyevening are the idealtimes to water.Cooler air and lesswind mean water isabsorbed directly intothe grass with lessmoisture lost to evap-oration. Wateringduring the heat of theday can actually scaldand burn your grass. For more informa-tion on how to keepyour lawn healthyyear-round, visitwww.weseedamer-ica.com. With a littleplanning, you'll beenjoying the aestheticand environmentalperks of a cool, lushgreen lawn in notime.
