The days when indi-viduals build housesby themselves havelong since passed.Building a house isnow a team effort.General contractorshire skilled subcon-tractors who special-ize in the variousphases of construc-tion. Part of the jobof the general con-tractor is to develop a
schedule for buildinga house so that eachsubcontractor spe-cialist is there to per-form each given taskat the right time. Who are some ofthe players? First, someone has to ex-cavate the lot, dig-ging a hole for thefoundation. Next, asubcontractor has topour the footings, on
which the house willrest. A subcontractorwill then place thefoundation on top ofthe footings. Once the foundationis in place, a newgroup of subcontrac-tors comes to thesite. Someone has toframe the house, which is the skeletonthat provides the sup-port for the interiorand exterior walls, the flooring and theroof. A siding con-tractor is needed toinstall the exteriorsiding material. Aroofing subcontractorneeds to apply theshingles or otherroofing material.Someone needs toinstall the windowsand doors to finishclosing up the house. When the house isclosed up, there isstill a lot of interiorwork to be done. Aelectrical subcontrac-tor needs to install all
of the neces-sary wiring.A plumb-ing sub-
contractorinstalls thepipes for thewater system. And aspecialist needs to in-stall the heating, airconditioning and ven-tilation (HVAC) sys-tem. As houses havebecome larger andmore complex, manyof these trades re-quire a greater levelof expertise than inbygone generations. The house is nowready for the finishingtouches. Once theplumbing, electricaland HVAC work is in-stalled, a subcontrac-tor comes in to installinsulation. Anothermust hang the inte-rior walls and ceil-ings. These thenhave to be painted byanother sub. Thecabinets and appli-
ances for thekitchenneed tobe in-stalled.The
flooringand carpeting
need to be laid.Once again, thesetasks must be sched-uled in the correctorder. Subcontractors alsowork on the outsideof the house. Some-one must grade andlandscape the prop-erty. Houses withdriveways and decksmay have still othersubcontractors whocome to the site.As houses have be-come larger and filledwith more featuresand options for peo-ple's comfort, houseconstruction has be-come more special-ized. Nonetheless, more than one ofthese tasks may beperformed by a par-
ticular subcontractor. The general contrac-tor may also performsome of the tasks. This large team of
different tradespeo-ple who participate inthe construction ofnew homes is goodnews for localeconomies. All ofthese subcontractorsare earning wages, paying taxes, andspending money intheir communities. The money is spreadout rather than con-centrated and cancreate an economicripple effect. That's agood reason to wantto see new housesbuilt in your commu-nity and to supportyour local "hometeam."For more informa-tion, contact theMoore County HomeBuilders Associationat 910-944-2992 orvisitwww.mchba.com.

(ARA) - For somehomeowners, remod-eling projects are reg-ular occurrences tokeep their homeslooking fresh. Some-times, that meanssmaller changes like anew coat of paint orchanging a light fix-ture. Other times, more substantialchanges are needed.Determining thosechanges can be achallenge, but lookingat the potential returnon investment is agreat way to prioritize. Bathroom remodel-ing offers a 68.7 per-cent return oninvestment, accordingto a National Associa-tion of Realtors sur-vey. One way to addvalue to a bathroomremodel is to pickbathroom fixtures thatare more efficient thanwhat you currentlyhave installed. Ameri-cans are going greenin many areas of life, whether with more en-ergy-efficient lightbulbs, hybrid cars orby recycling moreregularly. Bathroomfixtures are no differ-ent.Here are three rea-sons why you shouldconsider going greenwith your bathroommodeling project:* Products may beoutdated. Toiletsmade before 1994 useanywhere from 3.5gallons to 8 gallonsper flush (gpf), whilenew EPA WaterSenselabeled high-efficiencytoilets can work beau-tifully on a modest1.28 gpf. Not sure ofyour toilet's vintage?
Look at the undersideof the tank lid - thedate of manufacture isoften stamped into theporcelain. In theshower, the typicalshowerhead installedin California homesbuilt after 1994 usesas much as 2.5 gal-lons per minute. Atthat rate, your eight-minute shower con-sumes a whopping 20gallons of water.* Savings to be had.Compared to 3.5 gpftoilets, TOTO's AquiaOne-Piece Dual FlushHigh-Efficiency Toilethas a flushing systemthat enables home-owners to select thelevel of water usedeach time the toilet isflushed - 1.6 gallonsfor bulk waste or .9 forliquid. The approachprovides exceptionalwater savings pairedwith outstanding per-formance. A family offour can save morethan $90 annually ontheir water bill, and$2,000 over the life-time of the toilet. If you replace a typi-cal 2.5 gpm shower-head with a TOTOhigh-efficiency TrilogyShowerhead, you willexperience the sameluxurious shower, yetconsume a responsi-
ble 14 gallons, saving20 percent of thewater used by oldermodels.Even something likea faucet can con-tribute to water sav-ings. TOTO's SilasWidespread LavatoryFaucet is a Wa-terSense labeled lava-tory faucet thatconsumes a responsi-ble 1.5 gallons perminute without sacri-ficing an ounce of per-formance. Its designhas a classic contem-porary elegance witha graceful, curvedspout. * Be a trendy home-owner. A whopping 68percent of builderssurveyed by the Na-tional Association ofHome Builders saythat energy-savingtechnologies and fea-tures including low-Ewindows, energy-effi-cient appliances, andLED lighting will becommon along withother green featureslike engineered woodproducts, and water-saving plumbing fix-tures such asdual-flush toilets andlow-flow faucets by2015. Start now andyou'll be ahead of thecurve.
Three green trends for 2012 home remodeling
(ARA) - Each year,420 home fires occurduring the holidayseason, claiming thelives of 21 people andinjuring 43, accordingto the National FireProtection Associa-tion. Protection 1, the na-tion's second-largestsecurity provider, isoffering 12 tips for asafer holiday to helpreduce the chance ofbecoming a holidayfire casualty:1. Maintain your holi-day lights - Inspectholiday lights eachyear for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps inthe insulation, brokenor cracked socketsand excessive kinkingor wear before puttingthem up. Use onlylighting approved bya verified testing labo-ratory such as Under-writers Laboratories.2. Don't overloadelectrical outlets - Donot link more thanthree light strands, unless the directionsindicate it is safe, oryou can risk puttingtoo much strain onthe power source. Foradditional protection, connect strings oflights to an extensioncord before pluggingthe cord into the out-let. Make sure to peri-odically check thewires - they shouldnot be warm to thetouch.3. Water that tree -Christmas trees ac-count for 250 fires an-nually, resulting in 14deaths, 26 injuriesand more than $13.8million in propertydamage according tothe U.S. Fire Associa-tion. Typically, treefires are started byshorts in electricallights or open flamesfrom candles, lightersor matches. Dry andneglected trees canincrease your risk, while well-wateredtrees help to reducethe chance of any is-sues.4. Avoid using litcandles - Openflames create manyopportunities for harm
