The Daily News of TV Sales Friday, May 19, 2017 BROADCAST TELEVISION STILL THE CHAMP SLIGHT DECLINE IN APRIL, BUT STILL IN THE LEAD National TV networks are still dominating when it comes to reach, especially compared to digital media. MediaPost.com quotes a Pivotal Research Group study that says in April, national TV platforms reached 98.1% of all U.S. viewers. By comparison, YouTube reached just 73% of all people ages 13+ in April, not including reach on mobile devices for 13-to-17-year-olds. Snapchat reached 24% of all people ages 13 and older. CBS reached 67.3% of all people in April, with ABC, NBC and Fox coming in between 64% to 58%. The CW and TNT were next, in the 40% range. Looking at reach on the household level, 82.3% of homes watched CBS, followed ABC, 79.8% and NBC, 74.4%. Behind the broadcast nets were a number of cable networks, including AMC, TBS, FX, USA, ESPN and HGTV. Each drew numbers in the low 30% range. FLAT BEING CALLED THE NEW NORM? A new report from UBS says that while the TV Upfront market is is expected to gain price increases in the low- to mid-single digit range, overall ad volume iwill likely be flat to down slightly. The UBS report says flat to slightly down may be the “normalized marketplace going forward.” Its findings are backed up by the latest data from Standard Media Index (SMI), which shows the U.S. ad market down 1% in April—with digital media up a meager 3% and TV flat. Digital media had both winners and losers in April, per SMI, with gains made in social media, ad network/ad exchange business and pureplay video. But mobile ad networks/exchanges, pureplay content business, digital business from print companies and internet radio all lost ground in April. “The digital market hasn’t rebounded from the viewability and safety concerns that came to the forefront late last year,” said SMI CEO James Fennessy, according to Mediapost. “Advertisers are yet to jump back in and show they are confident that these issues have been meaningfully addressed.” In addition to a flat TV market, April saw declines for magazines, newspapers, radio and out-of-home, according SMI data, which reflects national agency spend. The UBS report is based on a March survey of 39 ad industry executives responsible for more than $50 billion in ad spend. UBS also interviewed a panel of three industry luminaries for their perspectives. ADVERTISER NEWS Most retailers have reported negative comps in their latest quarters, but the world’s largest retailer can speak of some positives. Walmart same-store sales were up 1.4% and it even saw foot traffic up 1.5%. But the real star was e-commerce—up 63% year-to-year boosted by acquisitions such as Jet.com, ModCloth, and ShoeBuy.……Target is expected to launch twelve new brands over the next two years with Cloud Island, an infant-oriented brand, debuting later this month. It will expand to about 500 SKUs including bedding, décor, bath and layette……The Lidl discount grocery chain that’s expected to intensify competition on the East Coast and then roll out nationally announced its initial plans: the first stores will open starting on June 15 in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. By the middle of next year about 100 should be in operation along the East Coast…… In the same retail segment in the same region, Ahold will close the remaining Martin’s Food Market stores after trying to sell them for about a year. About half the chain was sold to Publix last year to get government approval for Ahold’s merger with Delhaize; Publix has been renovating those units to be reopened under its own banner……Ace Hardware same-store sales were down 0.2% in the first quarter as the co-op ran into the same problems as almost everyone else with reduced traffic counts. The co-op added 16 new domestic stores during the quarter but 21 dropped out for a net loss of 5. Ace still has 4,358 U.S. locations, 56 more than this point last year……McDonald’s says it has reached the 1,000 mark in domestic restaurants that offer delivery via UberEATS. Biggest markets so far are L.A., Chicago, Columbus and Phoenix and plans are being made to get McDelivery into more than 200 units in Florida early next year……Ignite Restaurant Group, already talking about a possible sale and/or bankruptcy, reported a 14.3% drop in same store sales at Joe’s Crab Shack and a 12.6% fall at Brick House Tavern + Tap.
