The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, September 18, 2017 ADVERTISER NEWS The global brand manager of Hyundai’s upscale Genesis sub-brand admits “We still have a lack of awareness,” and the company hopes to build up that awareness with the G70 compact sport sedan that will arrive at dealers early next year as a 2019 model. Genesis is actually doing reasonably well in a slightly down automotive market with over 13,000 sales coming from just two models. Its siblings Hyundai and Kia are down 15% and 8.4% respectively……Fiat Chrysler is shutting down production of Dodge Grand Caravans for over a month in order to be able to meet new U.S. safety standards for airbags. Automotive News says there was only a 19-day supply of Caravans as of 9/1……Chevron is expanding its ExtraMile convenience store brand via the creation of a new joint venture with Jacksons Food Stores. Jacksons will bring over 200 c-store locations in six Western states into the deal, and the new company will embark on expansion plans hoping to double the roster within the next ten years……Lidl is expanding its footprint, with Alabama next on the expansion list. The discount food chain opened its first store in Georgia last week, the 30 th unit in the rapidly-growing chain……The Global Franchise Group, owner of the Great American Cookies and Pretzelmaker banners, is buying Round Table Pizza and its approximate 70 company-owned stores (about 380 more are franchised). Round Table emerged from bankruptcy several years ago and has been rebounding, with estimated average unit volumes up over 11% in the last two years……Retail Leader reports PetSmart continues to open bricks-and-mortar stores while many other retailers are relying on internet sales. The chain added 15 units in the Q2on top of 18 in the first quarter and will finish the year with 70 new stores. And while in many cases a buyout by private equity reduces a chain, in this case it’s been the opposite: a consortium led by BC Partners bought PetSmart two years ago when it had 1,387 stores, 169 less than are operating now… TECH IN CARS: BRAND DOESN’T MATTER “LOST VALUE”—OWNERS DON’T UNDERSTAND Owners of both premium and non-premium automotive brands are equally satisfied with the technical capabilities in their vehicles, but as more and more tech features are added, there’s a “lost value”. Some owners don’t understand and use all available technology. Those are the key findings of the second-ever J.D. Power Tech Experience Study, which found that owners overall rank satisfaction at 750 on Power’s usual 1,000-point scale. The large segment received a 777 satisfaction average and the small segment just a 732, so while brand doesn’t matter, vehicles that may be more expensive appear to outrank less expensive vehicles that offer fewer features. Safety technologies, which were ranked highest in the initial study last year, still generate the highest satisfaction. Collision protection averages a 787 score, far ahead of navigation systems (714). Owners also are very pleased with blind spot warning systems and back-up cameras. “Basics,” including the digital instrument panel, heating & air, seats, phone and entertainment controls, show a great difference in satisfaction; some drivers find them difficult to use. Dealers play a very important part in creating satisfied customers. For every technology measured in the study, satisfaction is higher when owners learned to operate the technology from a dealer than from a non-dealer source. But the time buyers want to spend at the dealership is limited (about 25 minutes) which Power says indicates dealers have to prioritize what technologies they need to demonstrate. Power also offers the opinion this puts the onus back on the manufacturer to design technologies that are more intuitive. What about the future? Power’s Kristin Kolodge commented, “Owners are drawing parallels between their understanding of current vehicle technology and the trust they must likely place in the autonomous vehicle technology in the future. There’s a large gap right now. If someone can’t understand how to set their vehicle’s adaptive cruise control, they will certainly doubt their ability to operate an autonomous vehicle.” Chevrolet and Audi each produced two segment winners, Chevy with the Tahoe in the large segment and the Camaro in the midsize segment. Audi’s A3 was named best in the small premium segment and its Q7 won in the midsize premium segment. The Kia Niro took honors in small vehicles (its Sportage was second), while the Hyundai Elantra won in compacts and the Lincoln MKC was best in compact premium.

COMPETITIVE INFO Apple’s Safari 11 web browser is due to be released later this week, and several advertising trade associations including the 4As, Association of National Advertisers, and Interactive Advertising Bureau are protesting that the new version will block advertisers from collecting data that helps them target ads to device users. Apple says the change will better protect user privacy, but the trade groups counter it will make advertising more generic and less valuable. A letter from the trade groups said Apple’s Safari move “breaks standards and replaces them with an amorphous set of shifting rules that will hurt the user experience and sabotage the economic model for the internet.” Safari is reported to have a 51.6% share of the browser market, ahead of Google’s Chrome, which has a 38.7% share.

BUSINESS BYTES - We now have the data for July from American Banker’s Index of Banking Activity. The overall index came in at 56.2 (anything over 50 is considered to be in expansion mode), but that was slightly lower than June’s 57.0 and shows growth—but slower growth—than was seen in preceding months. There were declines in commercial loan applications, consumer and commercial loans outstanding, and pricing on new consumer and com-mercial loans, but consumer loans approved were up along with applications for new consumer loans. July was the 62nd straight month of overall expansion in baking activ-ity. By region, the West led at 57.8, followed by the South at 57.0, the Northeast at 55.4, and the Midwest at 55.0. - Through the first seven months of the year, the aver-age retail new-vehicle selling price is almost exactly flat with January-July, 2016, according to the latest data from the National Automobile Dealers Association. At the average dealership, (which sold an average of 532 new vehicles through July), the average selling price was $34,141, a gain of just $65 over the $34,076 recorded last year, and the gross profit on those vehicles has dropped from $2060 to $1971. The average selling price at luxury dealerships is up from $51,943 last year to $52,329 this year, but at mass market dealerships the gain is a mere $11 to $31,981. The average mass market dealer has sold 543 new vehicles (524 last year), while the average luxury dealership has sold just 454, a 16.7% drop from 545 sales. VIEWERS HAVE MORE INTEREST IN TV - NOT LESS The Video Advertising Bureau says subscribers for the pay TV business --- cable, satellite, and telco -- have remained relatively steady for the last five years, now holding at 98 million homes for 2017. That comes to 83% of Nielsen’s total TV universe of 118 million homes -- just a 1% decline versus a year ago. And pay TV declines are not coming from broadband-only and broadcast-only homes, says Sean Cunningham, president/CEO of the VAB, reported by MediaPost. Streaming video adds to traditional TV, he says. Though streaming options have grown, the VAB says a majority of over-the-top streaming TV homes -- 71% - also have a pay TV service. Says Cunningham: “It’s all about more interest in TV.”

THIS AND THAT We mentioned last week about expanded seasonal employee hiring plans for several retailers, but one major retailer—Macy’s—will hire slightly less, abut 80,000, down from 83,000 last year. The reason? Macy’s is operating 70 fewer stores than last year, according to Reuters. The chain is hiring more people to fulfill online orders, but that’s offset by the lessened need for help at the stores. The June 2017 Beta Cable Subscriber Study-Evaluation of Basic Cable Networks shows the same results as a January study. ESPN is again the top “must have” cable channel by all participants. ESPN was also named as the No. 1 network in perceived value by network men, adults 18-34 and 18-49, and adults with children age 11 and under.
