Did you know?

Love your enemies, easier said than done, no

doubt. But, remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer.

When we are in close communication with God, it opens our

heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it

towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more

empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our

enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts as well

Sacrament of Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism should be celebrated as soon as possible after birth. Therefore parents should contact the parish office prior to the child’s birth. This will allow adequate time for the necessary preparation of the parents and the Godparents.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: On Wednesday from 6:15-7:00 PM or by appointment.

First Reconciliation and First Communion, Sacrament of Confirmation: Please contact the Coordinator of Religious Edu-cation (María Morales) for more information.

Sacrament of Marriage: Requires at least nine months of preparation before the Marriage. Contact the Pastor, through the parish office, to start the process.

Pastoral Care: Please contact the parish office if you are aware a parishioner is sick and desires to receive the Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick or a visit from the Pastor.

Parish Registration forms are available through the office.

There was a great response to the Council's call for

nominations. 64 names were submitted! Council members will be

contacting everyone whose name is on that list to verify interest

and availability. Watch for additional announcements and

The building renovation project continues to move

forward. Modifications to keep the renovation within budget are

now being designed. Stay tuned for further developments!

The season of Lent will soon be here, and so will

Operation Rice Bowl. Watch the bulletins for information about

how you and your family can participate in Lenten sacrifice to

help the poor around the world.

Come walk with Christ. Stations of the Cross will be held

each Friday at 7:00 PM during Lent, and you and your family are

invited. The language will alternate from station to station to better

serve our diverse parish.

Ministries with Melanie

Coddington. There will be a

session THIS Saturday, February

25 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM. As

a Regional Minister for

Christian Formation, Melanie

Coddington provides

catechetical and pastoral support to parishes in the western

vicariate of the Diocese of Richmond and contributes regularly

to diocesan initiatives, traveling often and video-conferencing

from her home-office in Abingdon, Virginia. Widely recognized

as a dynamic teacher and adult learning facilitator, Melanie has

taught cantors, lectors and gathered liturgical ministers on the

parish and diocesan levels across North America. She edited

The Liturgical Singer for NPM from 1999-2003, co-authored

Cantor Basics, 2nd Edition (Pastoral Press, OCP, 2002), and has

co-written “Cantor Avenue,” a regular feature of Today’s

Liturgy, published by OCP, for the last several years. The

parish will offer a light lunch, please sign up the list or call

the office if you plan to attend so that we have enough food.

Last week, many of you received a letter from Bishop DiLorenzo

asking for your support of the 2017 Annual Diocesan Appeal. We

hope you will give prayerful consideration to this request.

An important aspect of the Appeal is that all parishes receive back a

portion of their funds collected to be used for important local

priorities. The Appeal not only provides an opportunity for you to

support important ministries that impact many programs outside of

our parish boundaries, it also supports the services the Diocese

provides directly to our parish. In complement to the funds returned

to our parish through the parish sharing formula, the Appeal also

benefits us through the following ministries and programs.

The diocese has also subsidized a portion of the cost for our youth to

attend gatherings such as the Diocesan Youth Conference and the

Discovery Retreat. The Office of Black Catholics and the

Office of Hispanic Ministry have awarded grants as well.

All pledges can be paid in ten monthly installments which makes it

easy to support the important ministries of our Diocesan Church

while also supporting our parish needs. Thank you in advance for

your partnership in the 2017 Appeal.

El Evangelio en el hogar.

El Evangelio de esta semana: Mateo 5:38-48. Jes�s nos pide que vayamos m�s all� de tratar a los dem�s de la misma manera en que queremos ser tratados. �l nos pide que cuidemos los unos de los otros igual que Dios lo hace, amando a los dem�s sin esperar amor a cambio e incluso amando a nuestros enemigos. Esta es una invitaci�n que toma toda una vida aceptarla y cumplirla. Es un reto para la familia mantener este mensaje vivo en un mundo que pone un gran valor en la competencia y en ser “m�s”.

Rezar juntos. Dediquen tiempo para que toda la familia celebre el Sacramento de la Reconciliaci�n. Pueden ir juntos cuando ofrezcan confesiones privadas. Aunque sus hijos menores a�n no hayan recibido el Sacramento, ser�a un buen ejemplo para ellos si sus padres y hermanos mayores participaran en el Sacramento. Cuando lleguen juntos a casa, den gracias a Dios por el don del perd�n.

The Gospel at Home.

This Week’s Gospel: Mathew 5:38-48. Jesus asks us to go beyond treating others in the same way we want to be treatedourselves. He asks us to care for each other as God does—to love other people without expecting love in return and to even love to our enemies. This is an invitation that takes a lifetime to grow into and fulfill. It is a challenge for the family to keep this message alive in a world that puts a premium on competition and on being “better.”

Pray Together. Set aside some time for the whole family to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You can go together at one of the times when private confession is being offered. Even though your younger children have not yet received the Sacrament, it will be good for them to see their parents and older siblings participating in the Sacrament. The Word of God as a Source of Prayer by Christopher Chapman

It continues from last week… The Church's Exhortation“In the Catechism, we are reminded that prayer is a "drama"

(CCC, no. 2598). It is this drama that lies at the heart of human prayer, and it is Scripture that is meant to illuminate and guide our praying. In reading Sacred Scripture, we enter into a dialogue with God that is a real conversation. God expects us to question him, search him out, and invest ourselves in his Word. In return, he promises us that we will find wisdom. It really is ours for the asking.

A Contemporary Example

As we affirmed at the beginning, "we do not know how to pray as we ought." In Isaiah, the Lord reveals, "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts" (Is 55:9).

Then what is our hope? It is the Revelation of God. He wishes us to know his ways. He invites us to ponder and pray, and then he also shows us the way. What we must do, like the psalmist, is promise God, "I will meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. In your statutes I will delight; I will not forget your words" (Ps 119:15-16). When we do that, God then works with our efforts, helping us discover in his Word more than we ever expected to find. "Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart" (Heb 4:12). In effect, Scripture is as dynamic as our lives.

In a candid and telling blog post, Abraham Villela illustrates that point by recounting the day a short Scripture passage, used by a catechist, pierced his fifteen-year-old heart and mind.

He explains, "I was 15, and a metal head that wore band t-shirts, like Marilyn Manson, to class and Mass. I had no interest in church. I remember bluntly telling a catechist on the first day of class that I didn't want to be there, that I was going to sit in the corner and listen to music on my portable CD player. . . ."

One day, however, Villela forgot to bring his headphones to class. With nothing else to occupy his attention, he found himself listening to the teacher for the first time.

"What happened next," he continues, "changed the direction of not just my life —but of my eternal destiny. My catechist grabbed her Bible, and read 1 Peter 5:7: 'Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.'"

As Villela recalls in his essay, from an early age, he had struggled with a consuming and "crippling" anxiety. But, upon hearing those words of St. Peter's, he writes, "My heart was pierced and I was filled with peace. It's not that I never believed in God but I just never thought he believed in me. It was a Hebrews 4:12 moment."

Contin�a de la semana pasada… La exhortaci�n de la Iglesia … “En el Catecismo se nos recuerda que la oraci�n es un "drama" (CIC, no. 2598). Es este drama lo que yace en el coraz�n de la oraci�n humana, y es la Escritura la que est� destinada a iluminar y guiar nuestra oraci�n. Al leer la Sagrada Escritura entramos en un di�logo con Dios que es una conversaci�n real. Dios espera que lo interroguemos, que lo descubramos y que pongamos dedicaci�n a su Palabra. A cambio, �l nos promete que encontraremos sabidur�a. Realmente est� a nuestro alcance si la pedimos.

Un ejemplo contempor�neoComo afirm�bamos al principio, "nosotros no sabemos pedir lo que nos conviene". En Isa�as, el Se�or revela, "As� como aventajan los cielos a la tierra, as� aventajan mis caminos a los de ustedes, y mis pensamientos a sus pensamientos" (Is 55:9).

Entonces �cu�l es nuestra esperanza? Es la Revelaci�n de Dios. �l desea que conozcamos sus caminos. Nos invita a reflexionar y orar, y luego tambi�n nos muestra el camino. Lo que debemos hacer, como el salmista, es prometer a Dios, "En tus ordenanzas quiero meditar y mirar a tus caminos. En tus preceptos tengo mis delicias, jam�s me olvidar� de tus palabras" (Salmo 118:15-16). Cuando hacemos eso, Dios entonces trabaja con nuestros esfuerzos, ayud�ndonos a descubrir en su Palabra m�s de lo que nunca esper�bamos encontrar. "La palabra de Dios es viva, eficaz y m�s penetrante que una espada de dos filos. Llega hasta lo m�s �ntimo del alma, hasta la m�dula de los huesos y descubre los pensamientos e intenciones del coraz�n" (Hb 4:12). En efecto, la Escritura es tan din�mica como nuestra vida.

En un blog franco y elocuente, Abraham Villela ilustra este punto contando el d�a en que un breve pasaje de la Escritura, usado por un catequista, traspas� su mente y su coraz�n cuando ten�a quince a�os.

Explica: "Yo ten�a 15 a�os, y era un devoto del rock met�licoque llevaba camisetas de bandas, como Marilyn Manson, a clase y a Misa. No ten�a ning�n inter�s en la iglesia. Recuerdo que le dije sin rodeos a una catequista el primer d�a de clase que no quer�a estar all�, que iba a sentarme en la esquina y escuchar m�sica en mi reproductor de CD port�til...".

Un d�a, sin embargo, Villela se olvid� de llevar sus auriculares a clase. Sin nada m�s que ocupara su atenci�n, se encontr� escuchando a la maestra por primera vez.

"Lo que pas� despu�s", contin�a, "cambi� la direcci�n no s�lo de mi vida, sino de mi destino eterno. Mi catequista tom� su Biblia y ley� 1 Pedro 5:7: "Dejen en sus manos todas sus preocupaciones, pues �l cuida de ustedes".

Como Villela recuerda en su ensayo, desde temprana edad hab�a luchado con una ansiedad que lo consum�a y lo "paralizaba". Pero, al escuchar aquellas palabras de san Pedro, escribe, "Mi coraz�n se sinti� traspasado y me sent� lleno de paz. No es que no creyera en Dios, pero nunca pens� que �l cre�a en m�. Fue un momento Hebreos 4:12".
