one-time special appeal for Hurricane Relief will support Church

relief agencies in the US and the Caribbean as they provide

humanitarian aid in the form of water, food, shelter and medical

care as well as ong-term efforts to restore communities after

2017 Red Mass… Lawyers Wanted The Very Reverend Monsignor Mark Richard Lane, Diocesan

Administrator, and The Saint Thomas More Society invite everyone in

the Richmond Diocese to join in worship and fellowship at the 34th

Annual Red Mass and Dinner on Thursday, October 26. Reverend

Monsignor R. Francis Muench, J.C.L., Judicial Vicar for the Diocese

of Richmond will celebrate the Red Mass. Mass is at 5:30 p.m. at Saint

Mary Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond. The dinner will follow in

the Saint Mary Church Upper Commons. The keynote address will be

given by Professor Hadley Arkes, Founder and Director of the James

Wilson Institute on Natural Rights and the American Founding. Tickets

for the dinner are $65.00 each. The Saint Thomas More Society is an

educational, fraternal, and service organization of Catholic lawyers.

A new catechetical year is here and with those new

opportunities for retreats. The retreats are for young people in high school; Christian Awakening for those in grades 11-12

and Discovery for those in grades 9-10.

John 15:12-13 "… In order to proclaim the Gospel to another, we must first open ourselves up to listening to another person's story and befriending that person in their own journey. Evangelization requires time, commitment, and the vulnerability of interpersonal relationships more than it requires investment in particular programs. We cannot evangelize those we do not love, and we cannot love those we do not take the time to invest in, whether or not they end up becoming Catholic disciples. A good starting point is to find common ground with those we want to evangelize. "In this preaching, which is always respectful and gentle, the first step is personal dialogue, when the other person speaks and shares his or her joys, hopes and concerns for loved ones, or so many other heartfelt needs. Only afterwards is it possible to bring up God's word, perhaps by reading a Bible verse or relating a story, but always keeping in mind the fundamental message: the personal love of God who became man, who gave himself up for us, who is living and who offers us his salvation and his friendship" (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 128). Relational evangelization presupposes the understanding that the discovery of Jesus and the experience of His mercy comes before the obligations and demands of the Gospel and the moral life in Christ. As Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa said in Jesus Christ, The Holy One of God, to put the obligations of the Gospel ahead of the discovery of Jesus is to put the carts before the railway engine.. With this in mind, here are some basic steps we can take to quickly and easily share our faith. A short, two minute conversation can change a person's life forever. - A face-to-face conversation about Jesus Christ and His Church can begin with an icebreaker. Often it is helpful to give someone a tangible reminder of Christ's love for them, like a Rosary or a holy medal. - Invite the person to share something of their story with you. Get to know them as you would anyone you meet for the first time. - Consider that this person is loved by God and that the Holy Spirit may have put them in your life so that they can hear the Gospel. … it will continue…

Involúcrate: Llevar las Buenas Nuevas a las Periferias EL REVERENDÍSIMO MARIO E. DORSONVILLE, OBISPO AUXILIAR DE WASHINGTON

¿Y cómo estar seguros que Dios se encuentra en las periferias?

“… Las periferias, nos dice el Papa Francisco, es ahí donde se encuentran "los pobres, los discapacitados, los nascituros y los enfermos, los inmigrantes y los refugiados, los ancianos y los jóvenes sin trabajo." Las periferias son esos lugares donde encontramos el sufrimiento, la soledad y degradación humana. La periferia es todo espacio donde aún no ha llegado el Evangelio.

Estos espacios pueden encontrarse en nuestros propios hogares, cuando miembros de nuestras familias sufren de adicción a las drogas o la pornografía. Cuando las parejas están más enfocados en proveer bienes materiales descuidando los sacrosantos momentos de oración o compartimiento familiar. Cuando los hijos están más interesados en afirmar su independencia que cuidar por sus padres enfermos. Cuando la ira, la discordia, y el chisme debilitan los lazos familiares.

La periferia también se encuentra en nuestros vecindarios, donde los jóvenes llenan el vacío en su corazón dentro de las pandillas, la violencia y el crimen. En las ocasiones donde la discriminación y los prejuicios llevan a la marginalización de diversos miembros en nuestra comunidad. Donde las personas con necesidades especiales son solamente acomodadas pero no integradas, valoradas y celebradas por lo que pueden contribuir. También donde hay estudiantes que viven el abandono en escuelas de bajo rendimiento y abrumadas por varios retos sociales. En los hospitales donde hay enfermos que agonizan día con día sin el apoyo de un ser querido. En los hogares dónde los ancianos viven en soledad, añorando la cercanía de sus hijos que no los visitan.

Finalmente, las periferias están también en tierras lejanas que hoy en día son más cercanas gracias a los medios de comunicación y otros avances tecnológicos que nos acercan al sufrimiento de nuestros hermanos en los lugares más remotos de la tierra. Ahí en medio del sufrimiento de las víctimas de desastres naturales que son empeorados por la degradación ambiental que es el resultado de nuestro descuido del planeta. En el sufrimiento de las personas que son desarraigados de sus países a causa de las guerras y persecución política. En la constante marginalización de los pueblos indígenas que todavía continúan luchando con hacer que su voz sea escuchada. En los barrios donde el abandono social se hace más evidente.

Y son a todos estos lugares a donde somos enviados, ya que como dice el Papa Francisco, "el camino de la Iglesia es salir para ir a buscar a los lejanos en las periferias, para servir a Jesús en cada persona marginada, abandonada, sin fe, desilusionada de la Iglesia, prisionera de su propio egoísmo."8 Y en esta salida encontramos a Dios, a quien es fácil reconocer cuando nuestra vida está sumergida en la oración.

Finalmente, en las periferias somos transformados. Ahí es donde descubrimos nuestro rol bautismal de profetas. Y es que cuando encontramos a Dios en las periferias, hacemos comunión con nuestros hermanos, y eso nos mueve a proclamar el evangelio. Y es que el profeta camina con el pueblo, les invita a ver la fidelidad de Dios a través de la historia, y apunta a un nuevo futuro lleno de esperanza. Y es que el profeta junto con el pueblo puede ver que "¡Así amó Dios al mundo! Le dio al Hijo Único, para que quien cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna."9 A esto te llama tu fe. A proclamar la verdad de la Buena Nueva y traer alivio al corazón humano que busca más. ¡Involúcrate! ¡Atrévete!”

Sacrament of Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism should be celebrated as soon as possible after birth. Therefore parents should contact the parish office prior to the child’s birth. This will allow adequate time for the necessary preparation of the parents and the Godparents.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: On Thursday’s from 6:15-7:00 PM at St Gerard or by appointment.

First Reconciliation and First Communion, Sacrament of Confirmation: Please contact the Coordinator of Religious Education (María Morales) for more information.

Sacrament of Marriage: Requires at least nine months of preparation before the Marriage. Contact the Pastor, through the parish office, to start the process.

Pastoral Care: Please contact the parish office if you are aware a parishioner sick and desires to receive the Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick or a visit from the Pastor.

Parish Registration forms are available through the office.
