New & Ongoing in Our Community

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Jesus’ Family here at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s. Thanks for choosing to come!

In Fr. John’s own words: A parishioner in need asks Fr. John to intercede for him or her, and he responds with his patented, “Sure!” Fr. John, in his oft-used phrase, asks Jesus: “So what does the rest of your day look like?” Jesus explains he is welcoming folks to heaven and asks Fr. John if he wants to join him, and Fr. John responds, “Sure!” We were pastored by a saint, and now this saint intercedes for us from Heaven.

Happy Mother’s Day! “Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children.” (Billy Graham). Huge thanks and much love to all mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, and those who have loved us in a motherly way! May the Blessed Mother hold you close to her heart!

Mother’s Day Blessing: “Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them

always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

"God loves each of us as if there were only one of us." -St. Augustine

How many priests? How old? Numbers growing or declining? There are 259 priests caring for about 258 parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston. Their median age is 60. (If you include senior priests, the median age is 70.) The number of active priests will decline significantly in the short- to intermediate- term – as, in most years, the numbers retiring will significantly exceed the numbers ordained. Let us work and pray to reverse this trend in the longer term by supporting quality candidates who are discerning a call to priesthood. (Statistics from Archdiocese of Boston Clergy Personnel Office.)

Sports: As I write this (5/5/19), the Bruins are up three games to two in an intense series with the Blue Jackets. A hard-fought Stanley Cup is possible! The Celtics are down two games to one to the Bucks and could pull off the upset. The Red Sox are only one game under 500!

Love and God bless you, Fr. Dan

Refugee Ministry - Generosity Knows No Bounds Here!

Paul Komi has a new bicycle! Thanks to the wonderful generosity of a parishioner at Our Lady's, you might see Paul riding on his mountain bike up and down the street in Roxbury. He was an eager participant in choosing the right bike size, the helmet, the lock, and the sunglasses - and in guiding his driver via GPS throughout his Boston neighbor-hood! Landry's in Brookline had the right size and style, and there will be a return trip to see salesperson Pete for a checkup in a month! We are truly blessed.

Six-Week Grief Support Group Join us for a 6-week grief support workshop “Living with Grief”. The death of a loved one is unlike any other. Whether the death was sudden and tragic or one with warn-ing and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused, and sad. These feelings may last for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent, or it may be years ago. Our Lady’s and Sacred Heart has developed a program to help you and yours start the healing process. This group will meet Sundays 11:15am-12:15pm on May 12, May 19, May 26, and June 2. Advanced registration is required. If you would like more information or to register, contact

Kate Neal at 617-527-7560 x219 or [email protected].

The next Justice and Peace Committee meeting will be held on Sunday, June 2, at Sacred Heart in the lower church at 11:30am. We will be reviewing the Robert DeSimone Fo-rum schedule for the coming year, discussing “Back from the Brink” on nuclear disarmament, and going over updates on climate change and the refugee ministry. Please join us with your thoughts and ideas.

Get to Know Your Pastoral Council Representatives!

Representative: Mike Keohane

Parish: Our Lady’s

Contact: [email protected]

Mike joined Our Lady’s in the summer of 2004 after moving to Newton. Originally from Ayer, MA, he moved to Boston for college and has been in the area ever since. He’s the proud father of two daughters: Sophia (14) and Emma (12).

His day job is as an attorney representing at-risk children in need of state services and acting as a mediator in family law matters. By night, he enjoys spending time with his children, reading, and watching the Red Sox.

Mike was appointed to the Pastoral Council in July 2017 for a two-year term. In addition to the council, Mike has taught Religious Education for the last 5 years, alternating between each daughter’s class. And, after his own Confirmation in 2017, Mike joined the RCIA ministry, meeting with adults who are interested in coming into full communion with the Church.

He’s very interested in ways to grow our community and to get people more involved in the collaborative. Have ideas? Let him know.

Fourth Sunday of Easter—Liturgical Year C

Follow us on Instagram! @sholnewton Don’t use Instagram? You can see our photos online at

https://www.instagram.com/sholnewton/ Here’s a preview of what you’ll see:

Today’s second reading is from the Book of Revelation. That book is the last in the New Testa-ment. Quite frankly, lots of parts of the Book of Revelation are difficult and even scary. But not today’s passage. John, the author, has a vision of heaven. Heaven is that world where God gets what God wants. Heaven is the world where God holds sway, power, and complete authority.

Today, let me call your attention to one detail of John’s picture of heaven. Listen again: “There was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.” Heaven holds a huge throng. Revelation portrays heaven as a place with room for lots of people, different people from all kinds of places.

Are we surprised? Think about the stories Jesus tells. If we believe that Jesus’ stories are a pic-ture of God, then God is recklessly generous and inclusive. He slings his seeds all over the place. He hauls in a dragnet with every kind of sea creature. He leaves the ninety-nine to search the lost sheep. He throws a party when his wastrel lost son comes home.

Would we behave like that? No, but Jesus says God behaves like that. Small wonder that heaven is so large if God is so incredibly extravagant and generous.

Our Lady’s Parish years ago adopted this phrase as our hallmark: “All are Welcome”. I thought of that as I read today’s wildly inclusive description of heaven. You and I, in our life together here, are called to mirror and witness a savior – God whose saving reaches out to everyone. Je-sus did it. He fed the 5000 and had bread aplenty left. He gave wedding wine enough to keep everyone merry for a long, long time.

I heard about a man to tried more and more to expend his spiritual horizon. In airports, at “T” stations he’d look around and ask himself: “Did Jesus come to save all these?” He’d look for the oddest, saddest, or meanest in the place and say, “Jesus came for him (her).”

Heaven is a huge, numberless crowd because God got God’s will done. Jesus didn’t make God a miser or heaven a lounge for the elite. Neither can I. Neither can anyone.

Blessed Easter to all!

Sacred Heart News Religious Education News

This past week, we celebrated First Communicants receiving Jesus for the first time! What a joyful day for the families and all of us! Every time one of us comes to know Jesus so intimately, it is a call to celebrate. We pray that their friendship with Him will grow each time they receive Jesus each Sunday.

Thanks to Kerry Prasad for her devotion in preparing our students so well for the Eucharist. Special thanks to Chris Sanroma for advising and support on First Communion Day. Once again, a special thanks to Marty Solomon, Kathie Long, Aedin Culhane, and Confirmation students for preparing and hosting the brunch!

There will be prayer baskets with the names of the Confirmation students at the entrances of the Church and Lower Chapel this week and all summer. Please take a name and pray throughout the summer for their openness to receiving the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit! Our adolescents need this divine strength to resist the pressures of the culture and be faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Thank you for taking up this call!
