Fr. Adrian Celebrating TV Mass Fr. Adrian will be celebrating the televised Mass on Catholic TV on Monday, July 30. Parishioners are welcome to come join him at the TV station, 34 Chestnut Street, Watertown, before the 9:30am start time, or to watch it live on TV, on the evening rebroadcast, or anytime on the Catholic TV website.

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

Pope Francis on Relaxing: “Together with a culture of work, there must be a culture of leisure as gratification. To put it another way: people who work must take the time to relax, to be with their families, to enjoy themselves, read, listen to music, play a sport.” I hope you get a chance to rest this summer!

Help in Forgiving – Part I: “If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.” --Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Help in Forgiving – Part II: “Father, forgive them; they know not what they do.” --Jesus

Love Chooses a “You”: Love, true love, is always directed at concrete people. Love is never anonymous. Love chooses; love doesn’t love an unknown mass. God also chooses people onto whom he focuses his love. God wills that all people be saved, but he doesn’t begin with all. He chooses one man, Abraham. And Abraham becomes a people, Israel. Israel becomes the Church, the people of God, and the Church shines throughout the world. To

choose and be chosen is a characteristic throughout the Bible. God chooses someone from among the anonymous multitude and pours his love and gifts of grace over this person. From this person, love will in turn stream out to others. If you want to live in love, you can’t begin by loving all of humanity. Start with your neighbor! Choose people you meet in your daily life. Love begins with a “you.” The fire of love needs to spread all over the world, but its spark is always ignited in a relationship between two people. If you want to love everybody right away, you’ll end up loving no one for real. First, love the ones closest to you, then, through them, you may later acquire universal love. --Wilfrid Stinissen, S.J.

Sports: As I wr ite this (two weeks ago, July 15, 3pm) I will try some predictions: (1) Chris Sale had a great All-Star Game. (2) The Sox are still ahead of the Yankees. (3) The Celtics have signed Marcus Smart. (4) The Patriots have not had a terrible injury in their training camp. (5) Tiger Woods made the cut, but did not win the British Open.

Love and God bless you!

Fr. Dan

Care for Creation: Choosing

Renewable Energy Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudato Si, said in 2015, “There is an urgent need to develop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable energy.” In Newton today we have a significant chance to choose renewable energy. The City is beginning a new program called Newton Power Choice. It will allow the City to negotiate with suppliers of electricity directly, continuing to use Eversource for the delivery of our electric power. How much of that electricity will be from renewable sources, e.g., solar and wind? Mayor Ruthanne Fuller will decide what percentage will be renewable in September. The Newton Coalition for Climate Action is promoting 40% renewable, beyond the 13% required by state law. You can advocate for renewable energy today. Call the Mayor at 617-796-1000, and tell her that you favor 40% renewable for Newton Power Choice. This action is now the most significant way that people in Newton can have an impact on global warming, eliminating carbon emissions equal to 10,000 cars in our city.

A Summer Gift for You—Part 1

This weekend and for the next four weeks, we have the opportunity of embracing Jesus as the Bread of Life in a deeper way. Jesus challenges his disciples to understand the Eucharist as both a personal and a communal gift. He offers a ministry of nour-ishment: Jesus feeds the multitude with an abundance that is staggering to behold. As we carry this miracle into our daily lives in the coming week, consider these points for reflection:

—How has God nourished you abundantly in your own life? What gifts has God given to you so generously?

—In the Gospel, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the people. Each week at Mass Jesus does the very same for each of us. How can we thank him for this tremendous gift?

—The multitude shared this meal in community, and they must have experienced a unique joy and amazement together at such a miracle. How can we capture and share that same joy in the miracle of the Eucharist that we receive at Mass?

The Mass for Millennials: The Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of Hosts, Heaven and Earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the Highest Blessed is He, who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the Highest Hosanna in the Highest

Even though I’ve recited that prayer thousands of times in my liturgical life, to recall the words correctly here, I had to sing. The musical theme I recalled this time was the classic Mass of Creation setting, which surprised me—in G minor, it is a bit dismal and has never been one of my favorites. But I learned to sing this setting of the Sanctus as I learned to speak. In a way, it’s my liturgical-musical infancy narrative.

The Sanctus draws us into the Infancy Narratives by inviting us to sing with the angels. Luke 2:8-14 tells of an angel coming to the shepherds as they work in the fields, shining with the glory of the Lord on the night of Christ’s birth. After proclaiming this good news to the shepherds, the angel is joined by a chorus, and together they sing glory to God. We repeat their song of praise in the Introductory Rite—just as the praise of the angels heralds Jesus’ earthly life in the Gospel, we sing the Gloria at the start of the Mass to announce our liturgical memory of Christ’s sacrifice.

The Sanctus invites us to sing the words of the angels again, but these specific words come from Biblical visions, not the Gospel. The first occurs in Isaiah 6:3, when Isaiah has a vision of God, seated in the Temple. Angels attend to God, but as they fly near the Divine, they cover their faces. Even though they are holy beings, the greatness of God’s glory is too close for them to experience. This intimacy prompts them to sing praise. Similarly, when we sing the Sanctus, we are moments away from encountering God in the Eucharist. By singing the words of the angels, we remember that even if the bread and wine as Body and Blood appear lowly, they are the true presence of God—and in a few moments, we are invited to hold God in our hands.

The Sanctus makes another Biblical appearance in Revelation 4:8, where John says that four creatures (symbolizing the four evangelists) sing the refrain “day and night without ceasing.” What’s more, a group of elders bow down and worship whenever they hear the praise of the creatures…which is all the time. So in this scene, two groups that appear formidable are not receiving any glory—rather, they are casting their crowns aside as they glorify the living God.

By proclaiming the Sanctus, we enter into this same glorification. We are also invited into community and harmony as we sing. We become one with the other members of our congregation; with people throughout the world, who are praising God through the universal Mass at that same moment; and with the angels, whose entire existence is ordered towards God’s praise. Can our momentary praise be enough?

“Holy, holy, holy,” we repeat three times. Are three repetitions enough to express the holiness of God when the angels live in constant praise of God’s unending glory? No, but through the Sanctus, we are invited into the angel’s refrain for a brief moment. By joining in their melodious praise, we are preparing to join for a moment in their continuous adoration: to glimpse God’s glory in the Eucharist.

The above reflection first appeared online through the Center for Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame and can be read in its entirety at http://churchlife.nd.edu/?s=the+mass+for+millennials&submit=Search. While it was originally written for an audience of college and graduate students, the beauty of the Mass is something that we can all consider and savor. We hope that you enjoy these reflections, consider prayerfully how you are called to engage or reengage in the Mass, and share these words with your loved ones. Timothy P. Fruit Juice Needed! In August, we are collecting fruit juice. Donations can be dropped off during the week in the lower elevator lobby OR at weekend Masses in either the elevator lobby or the upper church foyer at Sacred Heart Church.

Help with the New Lower Church Conference Room

This summer, we will be busy turning the old music room in the lower church into a new multi-use conference room. This space is open to all parish/collaborative organizations, groups, and ministries. We hope to furnish the room with chairs and conference tables that can be arranged in various ways to accommodate different needs. The parish is looking for people who may be able to donate office furniture that meets this vision. If you think you can help, please contact Brian Romer Niemiec at [email protected].

Parish Office Closed The Sacred Heart Parish Office will be closed Monday, July 30, through Sunday, August 12. We will reopen on Monday, August 13. Your spiritual and pastoral needs are important to us; if you are in need of priestly assistance during that time, please call the office (617-969-2248) and your call will be forwarded to Our Lady's, where you may request the help of your parish clergy. We apologize for any inconvenience. Have a lovely summer holiday!

Religious Education News

Registration forms for the 2018-2019 year have been sent out to all returning CCD families If you are new to the Sacred Heart Religious Ed program, you may download the registration forms from the Sacred Heart Religious Ed website: www.sholnewton.org or pick up a form at the entrances of the Church. One form per student please.

Remember that the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation require a two year preparation period before receiving! Grades 1-2 must be completed for 1st Communion and Grade 9-10 should be completed before Confirmation is received. If your child is attending a Catholic School, only 1 year of preparation is required. Contact Michelle Solomon with any questions any time during the summer.

Please note that the ending times for afternoon and evening Religious Ed classes has changed for 2018-2019! Grade 1-5 afternoon classes will be from 4pm-5pm and Grades 6-10 evening classes will be from 7-8:15pm. Call if you have any questions. Early registration makes for good planning! Have a Blessed Summer. Michelle Solomon, Dir. Of RE

A Word from Fr. Shawn Carey

Cardinal Sean O'Malley has assigned me effective July 1, 2018, to be a Parochial Vicar for the Braintree Collaborative, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare Parishes, and to continue in my position as the Director of the Boston Deaf Apostolate. You all may be thinking this might be quite a lot, but as the Archdiocese is still undergoing restructuring within the offices, this path will provide exciting opportunities for my priestly ministry and for the Deaf ministry in the future. I'd like to ask for your prayers for this transition.

I will continue to celebrate 11:00am ASL Mass on Sundays and as well as 7:30pm Mass on Holy Days of Obligations. As for Christmas and Triduum schedule, I will plan to discuss this with the Deaf Catholic Council in the coming weeks and then I will let you know what we have planned.

Many thanks for your support for the Deaf Catholics at Sacred Heart Newton.

God Bless, Fr. Shawn
