Dear Friends, In praise of an overworked staff and

supportive parishioners: With the loss of Rosemary and Fr. Kevin (and the added burdens from the pandemic), the staff is working extremely hard. THANK YOU awesome staff! A big “thank you” to our wonderful parishioners for understanding and supporting the staff. You are all the best!

God’s two-fold love: God loves us as we are, and God loves what we can become. God loves us as we are – warts and all. God accepts us, as we are. God overflows with tenderness for us, as we are. God loves us personally – even though we do both good things and bad things. God disapproves of the sins we commit, but he still loves us imperfect sinners. God does not say “I will only love you if you achieve a certain level of holiness or goodness.” He says: “I love you now and always – even as I want you to grow in holiness and goodness.” God loves what we can become. As a parent or friend who sees the great potential in us, God wants us to achieve that potential, to be all that we can be, to be the best version of ourselves. That is why Jesus, who is at

times tender, is at other times demanding. He is like coach who pushes us hard in practice, not to berate us, but to bring out in us our absolute best. Jesus wants us to succeed at being that best version of ourselves – the one who will deeply change the lives of others for the better. God both loves us as we are, and he loves what we can become. Thank you for cooperating with the seating guidance of the ushers, especially at the 9AM and 10AM Masses – that are around capacity attendance. Your wonderful cooperation allows us to fit more people safely into the church and decreases the chance of people not being able to get in to Mass -- due to a full church, as we follow the health regulations. God bless you for your teamwork! (The 4pm and 6pm are not in danger of hitting capacity.)

Sports: As of August 23: The Celts and Bruins are doing great in the playoffs. The Pats open on September 13. The Sox have traded for two good pitchers to help in the future. Sweet!

Love & God bless you! Fr. Dan

From Fr. Dan, Pastor

Resuming Public Masses WEEKEND MASSES: Our TEMPORARY Mass Schedule is:

Saturday: 4pm @ Our Lady’s Sunday: 9am @ Sacred Heart, 10am @ Our Lady’s, 11am @ Sacred Heart (ASL), 6pm @ Our Lady’s

The 4pm Mass @ Sacred Heart will resume Sat., September 12.

We continue to work incrementally toward expanding in the direc-tion of the pre-COVID Mass schedule. The huge number of tasks involved in doing this safely during this once-in-a-century pandemic is the reason we are doing this so carefully and incrementally. Thank you for your patience and understanding. WEEKDAY MASSES: The weekday Mass schedule is:

Monday, Friday, and Saturday 9am @ Sacred Heart Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7am @ Our Lady’s

CONFESSIONS: TEMPORARY: they are Saturday 2pm-3pm. In August, they will be at Sacred Heart, Upper Church. In September, they will be at Our Lady’s, Main Church. WHO SHOULD COME TO MASS? The dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation will continue for the foreseeable fu-ture—for EVERYONE. Cardinal Sean strongly encourages people in vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with complicating physical conditions, to continue to worship virtually from home. I find this question helpful: “Would my doctor want me to worship from home or at church?” If you are unsure about the answer, may I suggest she would be happy to get a call from you with that question. Please be safe!

SAFETY AT MASS: Please come with your own mask; they are required for all those over age 5 who do not have a medical condi-tion that precludes a mask. Please also bring your own hand sanitiz-er so you can use it frequently while at Mass. While we have some hand sanitizer at the entrances to the churches, given the scarcity of supplies, we request you help make it last by bringing your own,

and also because it will key to have your own in the pew with you.

For safety, we can only seat as many people as can be kept 6 feet apart. The church will be marked to ensure your safety and fellow parishioners, and staff/volunteers will graciously guide you.

If we learn that someone at Mass tests positive for COVID-19, we will post this on the collaborative website, while keeping the per-son’s name confidential.

VOLUNTEERING AT MASS: We request that you consider giv-ing crucial and much needed help in furthering God’s work in our two parishes by volunteering to be a member of the people assisting with the very many tasks that go with holding public Masses during the pandemic. We really need the help of a lot of people! You can email: At Sacred Heart: Nick Frega at [email protected] At Our Lady’s: Maribeth Scott at [email protected] Please keep safety front and center. We strongly encourage you, especially if you are at risk due to age or a medical condition, to limit your involvement to what is safe for you. For some, that may mean connecting by phone, internet or mail, instead of face to face, at this time. THE VIRTUAL MASS will be continuing as usual since the pan-demic began, and it will go at least until the virus is totally gone, and maybe even continue after that. Those of you not able to be at Mass in person are especially important to us. By 8am on Sundays, we send out an email like this with a link you can click on. At a similar time, you can also find our Mass on YouTube at https://bit.ly/SHOLVideos.

WE ARE SO HAPPY TO BE REOPENING. We are grateful to God and to all of you. Special thanks to our staff and the many vol-unteers who make a safe reopening possible.

September Book Club Selection How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi is the September Book Club selection. Widely praised and chosen by numerous book clubs, Dr. Kendi is today’s visionary in the enduring struggle for racial justice. We will discuss the book using Zoom on Thursday, September 24, 7:00pm. If you don’t currently receive Book Club emails and want to join, contact Jim Allaire at [email protected].

Bridge Over Troubled Waters Project For many years, parishioners at Sacred Heart have supported the Maternal Home at BOTW by providing bed and bath linens for moms and their children entering the program. Recently, we were asked if we would participate in a new Bridge initiative, Welcome Baskets for the Rapid Rehousing program. RRH connects youth who can live independently with affordable housing opportunities and provides ongoing support with a Bridge case manager. Because of Covid-19, Bridge hopes to move youth who would otherwise be in temporary group housing (such as the space that Bridge rented from Emerson College after students left last spring) into individual housing units as quickly as possible. Since June, 50 young people have moved into their own units, and Bridge expects this effort will continue through the fall. For many, it is the first time they have had their own space and so are without many basic household items. The Welcome Home baskets will help fill this void. We estimate that it will cost about $175 to purchase items for each basket. You can help us by contributing anywhere from $5

to the full cost of a basket; we will safely assemble and deliver the baskets using your donations. Checks can be sent to either parish office, Attn: Mike Bliss, Business Manager, payable to the parish with “Bridge Fund” in the memo line. If you have any questions, contact Cathy Schneider at [email protected].

Bringing Communion to Others in Your Home

We are happy to report that bringing Communion to those in your household is allowed by Archdiocesan safety guidelines. Simply continue the practice of bringing a pyx (Communion Carrier) with you to Mass and hold it out when you are receiving Communion. If you do not have a pyx, see a staff member and we will be happy to give you one. Bringing Communion to those not in your household is temporarily not allowed due to the pandemic. We look forward to when it will be safe to resume that practice, and we will let you know when that day arrives!

The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist: Questions and Answers

14. Why do we speak of the "Body of Christ" in more than one sense? First, the Body of Christ refers to the human body of Jesus Christ, who is the divine Word become man. During the Eucharist, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. As human, Jesus Christ has a human body, a resurrected and glorified body that in the Eucharist is offered to us in the form of bread and wine. Secondly, as St. Paul taught us in his letters, using the analogy of the human body, the Church is the Body of Christ, in which many mem-bers are united with Christ their head (1 Cor 10:16-17, 12:12-31; Rom 12:4-8). This reality is frequently referred to as the Mystical Body of Christ. All those united to Christ, the living and the dead, are joined together as one Body in Christ. This union is not one that can be seen by human eyes, for it is a mystical union brought about by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Mystical Body of Christ and the eucharistic Body of Christ are inseparably linked. By Baptism we enter the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church, and by receiving the eucharistic Body of Christ we are strengthened and built up into the Mystical Body of Christ. The central act of the Church is the celebra-tion of the Eucharist; the individual believers are sustained as mem-bers of the Church, members of the Mystical Body of Christ, through their reception of the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. Playing on the two meanings of “Body of Christ,” St. Augustine tells those who are to receive the Body of Christ in the Eucharist: “Be what you see, and receive what you are” (Sermon 272). In another sermon he says, “If you receive worthily, you are what you have received” (Sermon 227). The work of the Holy Spirit in the celebra-tion of the Eucharist is twofold in a way that corresponds to the two-

fold meaning of “Body of Christ.” On the one hand, it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that the risen Christ and his act of sacrifice become present. In the eucharis-tic prayer, the priest asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit down upon the gifts of bread and wine to transform them into the Body and Blood of Christ (a prayer known as the epiclesis or “invocation upon”). On the other hand, at the same time the priest also asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit down upon the whole assembly so that “those who take part in the Eucharist may be one body and one spir-it” (Catechism, no. 1353). It is through the Holy Spirit that the gift of the eucharistic Body of Christ comes to us and through the Holy Spirit that we are joined to Christ and each other as the Mystical Body of Christ. By this we can see that the celebration of the Eucharist does not just unite us to God as individuals who are isolated from one another. Rather, we are united to Christ together with all the other members of the Mystical Body. The celebration of the Eucharist should thus increase our love for one another and remind us of our responsibili-ties toward one another. Furthermore, as members of the Mystical Body, we have a duty to represent Christ and to bring Christ to the world. We have a respon-sibility to share the Good News of Christ not only by our words but also by how we live our lives. We also have a responsibility to work against all the forces in our world that oppose the Gospel, including all forms of injustice. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us: “The Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren” (no. 1397).

4pm Mass Volunteers Needed As you know, on Saturday, September 12, the 4pm Mass at Sacred Heart is returning! To ensure this goes as safely and smoothly as possible, a team of 8-10 volunteers will be needed. If you are willing to act in this role, ushering people to seats and helping ensure mask-wearing, we would need you to arrive 20 minutes prior to Mass. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Nick Frega at 617-969-2248 ext. 111 or [email protected]. Thank you in advance!

Mother Caroline Academy Drive It’s almost back to school time! Mother Caroline Academy is a tuition-free private school for low-income girls in Grades 5-8 in Dorchester. Each fall, parishioners have been very generous in donating school supplies for the 70 students and 8 teachers at MCA. School will open virtually in the fall and remain so until it is safe for students to return in person. This year, due to COVID-19, donations will be made in the form of Amazon or Staples gift cards, which will certainly assist the students and their families. 40% of MCA students have been directly impacted by the virus through the illness or death of a family member. COVID rates in the school’s neighborhood are almost 6%, much higher than most of the rest of the city. Our drive begins this weekend and runs through September 12/13. You can mail a plastic gift card to Carrie Coughlin, Director of Development, Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center, 515 Blue Hill Ave, Dorchester, MA 02121. Another option is to email an e-card to Carrie at [email protected]. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation for school supplies by mail to Mother Caroline Academy or online at www.mcaec.org/.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Despite COVID-19 and social distancing, the Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to work. We have had prayer sessions via Zoom, and everyone has been working on projects – shawls, blankets, or scarves. Just last week, baby blankets were sent out to some new arrivals despite their baptisms not taking place right now. We are a caring, supportive community even when we cannot physically be with each other. We look forward to the day when our Sacred Heart & Our Lady’s Collaborative can celebrate together in person without concern for safety. Until then, our prayers continue for all the sick, hospitalized, bereaved, and isolated parishioners and their families. Our hands continue to create items to comfort and embrace. Do let the office know if you know of someone who would benefit from one of our hand-crafted shawls.

A Note from Fr. Dan about Online Giving Continued ministry in these challenging times is made possible by the ongoing and generous financial support of parishioners like you. If you are able to make your regular

contribution online, we urge you to consider doing so. At all times, and especially during this crisis, online giving is both easier for you and better for Sacred Heart. To give securely online to Sacred Heart, visit https://osvhub.com/sacredheartnewton/funds Paper checks can be mailed to the parish office: Sacred Heart, 1321 Centre St, Newton Centre, MA 02459

News from the Guild for Fall & Winter 2020

Sacred Heart Religious Education Plans for the 2020-2021 Year We are excited to be able to provide an online version of our Reli-gious Education Curriculum to Sacred Heart families this fall. Each student/family will be able to choose to have access to either the online textbooks or use the hard copy textbook at home. Some grades will be led by a catechist remotely with parents guiding the curriculum from home. Other grades will be led by parents at home with bimonthly or monthly Zoom meetings with a catechist. In-person Retreats for Sacramental Preparation for Eucharist and Confirmation will be decided on as guidelines allow during the school year. Parent Meetings (Zoom) are an important aspect of your child’s faith formation and will be required for all CCD parents regard-

less of grade level. The dates and times of these meetings will be decided in September.

The deadline for registration is September 13, with classes beginning on Tuesday, October 6.

Please consider registering your child early with the online regis-tration form on the Collaborative website. Volunteers are needed to be catechists, especially in the upper grades! Contact the Reli-gious Ed office if you want to know more! We look forward to working with your family in this new and more collaborative way to grow in our Catholic faith together! If you have any questions, please contact: Michelle Solomon at [email protected] or 617-969-2248 x126.

After consideration by the Guild of St. Francis officers and in discussion with the Sacred Heart Parish staff, we have decided to cancel the Fall schedule of the Guild, including the Holly Harvest Fair, for 2020. As much as we wanted to continue on, we realized the many rules from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the possibil-ity of medical danger to volunteers and visitors to our fall activi-ties would be beyond our control. We are sorry to make this an-nouncement and, we thank everyone who has supported the Guild over the years. We will not be accepting any donations at this time and will be unable to accept material for storage until the pandemic is past. Please retain them at home until such time as we can accept

them for 2021. Normally, we host the Fall and Winter “gently used” clothing drive for the clients at St Francis House in Boston, but those drives are postponed. We hope to find new and creative ways to fundraise for our par-ish. If you have any ideas, let the Guild know. We certainly ap-preciate the support that parishioners have given in the past.We wish you health, sanity, happiness and peace at this difficult time. Guild members should expect to receive a copy of the Annual Report before summer ends.

Our Lady’s News

Invitation to Serve: Ministers Needed and Welcomed!

As we cautiously reopen, many people have stepped forward to help us celebrate Mass safely—and we would be grateful to re-cruit more. Please consider serving! Eucharistic Ministers: Eucharistic Ministers go out into the con-gregation to serve people in their pews. Masks are worn and hand sanitizer is readily available. Ushers: Ushers seat people in specific pews as they arrive. Dur-ing Communion, ushers make hand sanitizer available to the Eu-charistic Ministers. Finally, ushers control the dismissal of the congregation at the end of Mass, ensuring that social distance is maintained. The usher is a friendly face to all those who join us. Counters: Since we currently have a limited capacity in the church to ensure social distancing, counters monitor the attend-ance at each Mass, using a clicker counter. Lectors: We are seeking new lectors at all Masses. Lectors partic-ipate in the Mass in a particular way, proclaiming the Word of God in the assembly. Ministers in all roles are scheduled according to their preferences and availability, whether that’s every week or once a month. Contact Maribeth Scott at 617-469-8110 or [email protected].

Announcing Plans for the 2020-2021 Religious Education Year Religious Education for the 2020-2021 school year will be almost exclusively online via Zoom, with hopes that we may be able to gather in person for sacramental preparation retreats next spring.

The gist of the program is that we are asking families to participate in and commit to daily prayer, weekly worship and at-home lessons, and a monthly online gathering.

There are additional obligations for children preparing for the Sacraments of First Penance and First Communion and for young people preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Registration is online at https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=VlesrEjc9U2Mq6rhx8-l_hjA3mTlvEtNuU2Bo4fC7OxUMzhKNjc3VkJLMTBPT0lKRzlZUDJKR0RVVi4u, and tuition can be paid online at https://sholnewton.org/tuition-payment. You can also find these links on our website at https://sholnewton.org/religious-education-at-our-ladys. If you have limited Internet access and need a paper registration form mailed to you, please con-tact Ginny, and she’ll be happy to do so. Please register by Sept 13. Although this program is online, we do still need volunteers to serve in a variety of roles—some familiar and some new with this new model. Please contact us if you would like to learn more.

We are excited for all the potential of the year ahead and hope you are too! THANK YOU again for your patience, un-derstanding, and partnership. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all vigil and Sun-day Masses on the first full weekend of each month. The 4pm Mass at Sacred Heart will resume Saturday, September 12. In the future, we hope and plan to resume our full weekend Mass schedule across the Collaborative, adding back the Sunday 8:00am Mass (Our Lady’s) and 12:00pm Mass (Sacred Heart).

Scheduled Confession Times Confessions will be heard every Saturday, 2pm-3pm.

—In September, this will be at Our Lady’s only, Main Church. —In October, this will be at Sacred Heart only, Upper Church.

Weekday Masses—NEW Schedule Weekday Masses have resumed, and we have begun a new, year-round schedule for daily Masses, similar to the summer schedule we have used for a few years now.

—Mass is celebrated at Sacred Heart in the Upper Church at 9:00am on Monday, Friday, and Saturday only. —Mass is celebrated at Our Lady’s at 7:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only.

Thank you for your patience as we proceed carefully and with safety at the forefront of our minds!
