Happy New Year & Epiphany! May you and you loved ones be blessed with health (no Covid!), happiness and holiness.

The Christmas Season liturgies, helping the poor, the kindness of parishioners – all bring much joy. Thank you so much. May today’s celebration of Epiphany help us rejoice that Jesus is the Savior of All!

At Sacred Heart & Our Lady’s we carefully follow the Covid rules from the government and the Church. Thank you so much for your willing cooperation with them.

I am seeing way, way more Covid-19 in my ministry. I do not want to lose you! Please act with an abundance of caution. Be safe. Please do all you can to make it to the end of the Covid tunnel without getting the disease.

The best way to celebrate Christmas is to make it truly a feast of love and reconciliation. Christ is like a liberating vaccine leading us from the isolation imposed by the pandemic of sin, by our selfishness, our indifference, our rivalries, our anger, our pride, the real causes of distances between us. God ‘s love can cure us and set us free. This Christmas let us mend a quarrel. Build peace. Seek out a forgotten friend. Write a love letter. Encourage a young person. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Be gentle. Express our gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Take pleasure in the beauty and the wonder of creation. Speak out our love. Speak it again. Rejoice in God’s gratuitous love and His gifts. – Cd. Sean. 12/24/20.

What brings you peace of mind? When that is in conflict with what is more interesting, consider the peace of mind alternative in getting through the stress of Covid. In particular, if you notice some news channels are getting you infuriated, consider some moderation, and alternatives like comedy or music or a good book.

Resuming Public Masses WEEKEND MASSES: Our TEMPORARY Mass Schedule is:

Saturday: 4pm @ Our Lady’s, 4pm @ Sacred Heart Sunday: 9am @ Sacred Heart, 10am @ Our Lady’s, 11am @ Sacred Heart (ASL), 6pm @ Our Lady’s

We continue to work incrementally toward expanding in the direc-tion of the pre-COVID Mass schedule. The huge number of tasks involved in doing this safely during this once-in-a-century pandem-ic is the reason we are doing this so carefully and incrementally. Thank you for your patience and understanding. WEEKDAY MASSES: The weekday Mass schedule is:

Monday, Friday, and Saturday 9am @ Sacred Heart Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7am @ Our Lady’s

CONFESSIONS: TEMPORARY: they are Saturday 2pm-3pm. In November, they will be at Our Lady’s, Main Church. In December, they will be at Sacred Heart, Upper Church. WHO SHOULD COME TO MASS? The dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation will continue for the foreseeable fu-ture—for EVERYONE. Cardinal Sean strongly encourages peo-ple in vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with complicating physical conditions, to continue to worship virtually from home. I find this question helpful: “Would my doctor want me to worship from home or at church?” If you are unsure about the answer, may I suggest she would be happy to get a call from you with that question. Please be safe! SAFETY AT MASS: Please come with your own mask; they are required for all those over age 5 who do not have a medical condi-tion that precludes a mask. Please also bring your own hand sanitiz-er so you can use it frequently while at Mass. While we have some hand sanitizer at the entrances to the churches, given the scarcity of supplies, we request you help make it last by bringing your own,

and also because it will key to have your own in the pew with you. For safety, we can only seat as many people as can be kept 6 feet apart. The church will be marked to ensure your safety and fellow parishioners, and staff/volunteers will graciously guide you. If we learn that someone at Mass tests positive for COVID-19, we will post this on the collaborative website, while keeping the per-son’s name confidential. VOLUNTEERING AT MASS: We request that you consider giving crucial and much needed help in furthering God’s work in our two parishes by volunteering to assist with the very many tasks that go with holding public Masses during the pandemic. We strongly encourage you, especially if you are at risk due to age or a medical condition, to limit your involvement to what is safe for you. For some, that may mean connecting by phone, internet or mail, instead of face to face, at this time. THE VIRTUAL MASS will be continuing as usual since the pan-demic began, and it will go at least until the virus is totally gone, and maybe even continue after that. Those of you not able to be at Mass in person are especially important to us. By 8am on Sundays, we send out an email like this with a link you can click on. Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts Express Disappointment in Expanded Abortion

The consistent teaching of the Catholic Church is that life begins at conception and ends with natural death. As the Roman Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts, we at all times hold firm to that teaching so as to promote the preservation of life and to create a culture of respect for life as the foundation of a just and moral society. Today, we are deeply disappointed at the recent legislative action that, if enacted, would expand access to abortion in Massachusetts. The direct, intentional taking of a human life, regardless of the purpose or circumstances, is not morally acceptable and is particularly harmful to the common good. Most troubling is the fact that under these provisions, women will have greater access to late term abortions throughout the term of their pregnancy with no specific statutory requirement that a physician utilize lifesaving medical equipment if a child is born alive. Despite our disappointment we are hopeful that the full legislature accepts the language proposed by the Governor to retain eighteen as the age of consent, as provided by the current Massachusetts law, and not reduce the age to sixteen. Clearly, a young girl of age sixteen needs the guidance and support of a caring adult when considering the possibility of a decision that will affect her for the rest of her life. We remain committed to life and pray for the end to all abortions. Our society is best served by the protection of every person’s life, including those waiting to be born and those approaching natural death. We pledge ourselves to work to bring about a more just society that offers humane and effective alternatives for women facing a crisis or difficult pregnancy.

Every Wednesday through Flocknote, a short video with some reflection questions will be sent to your inbox. Bishop Barron is known for his intelligent theology and willingness to engage anyone willing to speak with him. These videos are primarily intellectual and will teach you about your faith, but will also challenge you spiritually. If you’d like to receive these videos, please register for our Flocknote mailing. You will also receive other updates from the collaborative once you do this.

Communion to the Homebound During the Pandemic

Due to health concerns we are unable to bring Holy Communion to those living outside of our homes at this time. However, if you are living with someone who is homebound, you are allowed to bring Communion home to them. Please bring a pyx (communion carrier) to Mass and present it to the minister as you receive Communion and you will be given a host to put in it to bring home. If you do not have a pyx, we would be happy to give one to you (to keep). Just see a staff member before or after Mass. Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, please keep the host on your person and give Communion to your homebound person as soon as you arrive at home.

Little Blue Books for Advent/Christmas We regret to inform you that we’re unable to provide the Little Books this season, due to COVID. However, Little Books can be ordered directly from the website at littlebooks.org. They are available in paper and ebook formats.

Racial Justice On this ancient feast of the Epiphany, we pray that we will be open to new insights and a new understanding of the racial inequities in our church, our city, our country and our world. If you would like to join members of our collaborative to learn more about the need for racial justice and to discern meaningful actions that our community can undertake to foster it, please join us for a Zoom meeting this coming Friday, January 8, 2021 at 4pm. In this dark time of year, may we be signs of light and hope to people in need of help in our day, just as the Holy Family sought shelter and protection in Bethlehem two millennia ago.

Today’s Gospel is a favorite part of the Christmas story. That’s easy to gure out. The Christ-child receives Christmas presents. These wise men – Magi – are extra colorful characters. Our own nativity set has its camels and Magi with gifts. We love to sing “We three Kings” even the though the Gospel doesn’t say how many there were.

This year, let’s focus on the part of the story after the Magi visit Jerusalem and King Herod. You recall Herod’s words to them: “When you have found the child bring me word”.

So our Magi – wise men – set out from Jerusalem. The story reads: “They set out, and there ahead of them, went the star they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was.”

What kind of place was it? It wasn’t in all probability, the stable where Jesus was born. Keep in mind that Joseph and Mary had travelled to Bethlehem only for a census. Some students of the Gospel tell us that by now Mary and Joseph are back in Nazareth. The star comes to rest over a house. It’s probably Joseph’s house in Nazareth. That’s fascinating. The wise men had come to nd a child who was born a king. So logically they went rst to a capital city – Jerusalem – to the palace. But Jesus, we’re told, wasn’t in a capital or a palace. He was in a small remote village in a carpenter’s house. By today’s standards, we couldn’t get an occupancy permit. No electricity. Out door plumbing. A dirt oor. No glass in the few windows. Surely not the place to look for a king. Were the wise men disappointed?

There’s something here about your life and mine. Most of us have followed one star or another in life. Maybe we thought our star would stop over a palace . . . only to have it stop over a very ordinary house. As a wry friend of mine once re ected: “When my ship came in, I was at the railroad station”.

I’ve talked to friends who followed the retirement star. “Won’t it be great when I’m retired!” In fact, most retired people are happy. But it’s not in a palace – not today. Most retirees have to pinch a penny. Some have to go back to work.

Remember the stars we followed when we were twenty or thirty? We’d set the world on re. But even the most successful people’s star se les in places that leave them incomplete and wondering. A very successful writer, four million copies sold, told us: “After the initial excitement passes, life goes on, just as bewildering as it was before. The great problems of life and death are there, just as they were before”.

So what to do when the star se les in unexpected places? We can learn from the Magi. They could have looked at Joseph’s house and said “This can’t be it”, but they didn’t. The Gospel says they were lled with joy.

They understood. They were willing to assume that God had a plan. So might we. Look at where the star rests for you. There’s probably a lot waiting for you even if it’s not where you planned to be.

For those who trust God, the star won’t likely lead to a palace. It will always, however, lead to a place where we can love God, nd Christ and receive love in return. For that today, let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Please remind the members of the Joint Committee on Judiciary that you oppose the expansion of abortion in Massachusetts. Sacred Heart News Registration is still open for all Grades by visiting https://sholnewton.org/religious-education-at-sacred-heart Religious Ed Project Nazareth Lessons begin again the first full week of January 2021. Religious Ed zoom classes begin for Grade 7/8 on Jan. 5 2021 and for Grade 9 on Jan 12. Grades 1-6 are using a new program created by the Archdiocese of Boston that meets the needs of families during Covid and also launches a project designed for parents to take on the natural role of bringing up their child in the Catholic faith at home. Project Nazareth provides “toolkits” that have weekly prompts to guide parents as they have conversations with their children to wonder/ponder/ and share their faith and the person of God in a natural way. Mentors from our parish

provide support through phone calls, prayer and virtual meetings that also give a built in connection with other parish families. Grades 7-9 for Confirmation and Middle School students meet 2x per month on zoom, alternating homework lessons and videos focusing on how the Catholic Faith provides them with the keys to a happy life. Please join us! Our Project Nazareth Families and Upper Grade Rel Ed students spent this week decorating and writing beautiful cards with messages of Christ's birth to our parishioners, who are unable to attend Sacred Heart especially during this Pandemic. Our Lady’s News Sunday 8AM Mass Reopening Is

Postponed Due to Covid With the recent extremely dangerous rise in Covid levels it became impossible to safely reopen the 8AM Mass at this time. To do so would require me to ask many folks in the “at higher risk” medical category due to age or underlying medical conditions to volunteer as ushers. This would increase their risk unacceptably. As Covid rates rise exponentially we want to do the opposite. We want to do all that we can to lower everyone’s risk. Please be assured that the 8AM will come back when it is safe to do so. ~ Fr. Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help anyone who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the parish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all vigil and Sun-day Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitalizations, so that we may be of help. Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Bap-tism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact
