From Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear Friends,

At home worshippers and in-the-Church worshippers are equally important! The virtual Mass will continue indefinitely, probably forever.

I am grateful and proud of your unity and mutual encouragement! In a time of significant polarization in society, your mutual love and building up of God’s family the church is an inspiration.

“TEMPORARY” is what the current Mass schedule is. We are trying to get re-opened safely during this phase I, “safer at home” phase. It is not meant as a prediction of what the schedule will be in the future.

Come Holy Ghost! Pentecost is today, Sunday May 31. “Holy Spirit fill our hearts, and renew the face of the earth!”

Adding the in person Mass onto the virtual one is a great joy! We also look forward to the later phases of the pandemic when it will become safe enough to encourage currently at-risk folks to come. I can only imagine the wise yet painful sacrifice those who are “at risk” are making by doing the smart thing and staying home. I admire you!

Rosemary & Fr. Kevin’s last day is today, Sunday, May 31.

Two AWESOME servants of Jesus. Please see the items about thank you and good-bye plans. When conditions allow, we will have full-scale appreciation occasions. We will miss them so much!

Should I worship at home or at the Church? Because of the deadly pandemic, there is no obligation to come to Mass. Further, I support Cardinal Sean as he strongly encourages all those 65 and over, or those who have a medical complication, to worship at home during this “Safer at Home” phase I. Even if you are not in the “at risk” category, I encourage you to think carefully about your choice. In person Masses this weekend are a joyful occasion, but not a “grand reopening.” They are be the first time we are operating within a once-in-a-century deadly pandemic. It will be so much safer if crowds are not huge on this weekend. Even our world-class team of staff and volunteers will learn from this weekend and then put those learnings into practice for June 6/7. Considering this, you may want to delay returning to physical Mass until June 6/7.

Sports: If the Pats played the Bucs and Brady, who would you cheer for? Me – I love Tom Brady, but the Pats are in my DNA – the Pats!

Love & God bless you! Fr. Dan

Resuming Public Masses WE ARE THRILLED AND DELIGHTED TO REOPEN for public Masses this weekend, May 30 & 31.

WEEKEND MASSES: The TEMPORARY Mass Schedule we start with this weekend and continue with on June 6-7 is:

Saturday: 4pm @ Our Lady’s Sunday: 9am @ Sacred Heart, 10am @ Our Lady’s, 11am @ Sacred Heart (ASL)

On the weekend of June 13 & 14, we will add on to this the 6pm @ Our Lady’s. This is a part of our plan to work incrementally toward expanding in the direction of the pre-COVID Mass schedule. The huge number of tasks involved in doing this safely during this once-in-a-century deadly pandemic is the reason we are doing this so carefully and incrementally. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

FUNERAL MASSES: They resume this Monday, June 1, and - again TEMPORARILY - we can only do one a day in a church due to the need to clean between Masses.

WEEKDAY MASSES: They resume next Monday, June 8. With the transfer of Fr. Kevin, we regret we are not able to do two weekday Masses a day; we wish we could. So it will be nec-essary for us to do what have done in the past summers on a year-round basis. (If we should get someone to follow Fr. Kevin, we can reexamine this.) The weekday Mass schedule will be:

Monday, Friday, and Saturday 9am @ Sacred Heart Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7am @ Our Lady’s

CONFESSIONS: TEMPORARY: they will be Saturday 2pm-3pm. In May and July, they will be at Our Lady’s in the main chuch. In June and August, they will be at Sacred Heart in the Upper Church. The Archdiocese wisely mandates that the priest be free a long time before Mass to attend to safety concerns dur-ing this COVID time.

WHO SHOULD COME TO MASS? The dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation will continue for the foreseeable future—for EVERYONE. Cardinal Sean strongly encour-

ages people in vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with complicating physical conditions, to continue to worship virtually from home. I find this question helpful: “Would my doctor want me to worship from home or at church?” If you are unsure about the answer, may I suggest she would be happy to get a call from you with that question. Please be safe! In the long run, we can attend more Masses if we make safety an extremely high priority during this time where deadly COVID-19 is all over the place.

MASKS AND HAND SANITIZER: Please come with your own mask; they are required for all those over age 5 who do not have a medical condition that precludes a mask. Please also bring your own hand sanitizer so you can use it frequently while at Mass. While we will have some hand sanitizer at the entrances to the churches, given the scarcity of supplies, we request you help make it last by bringing your own, and also because it will key to have your own in the pew with you.

SOCIAL DISTANCING AND LIMITED SEATING: For safety, we can only seat as many people as can be kept 6 feet apart. The church will be marked to ensure your safety and fel-low parishioners, and staff/volunteers will graciously guide you.

THE VIRTUAL MASS will be continuing as usual since the pandemic began, and it will go at least until the virus is totally gone, and maybe even continue after that. Those of you not able to be at Mass in person are especially important to us. By 8am on Sundays, we send out an email like this with a link you can click on. At a similar time, you can also find our Mass on YouTube at https://bit.ly/SHOLVideos.

WE ARE SO HAPPY TO BE REOPENING. We are grateful to God and to all of you. Special thanks to our staff and the many volunteers who are doing the heavy lifting that make a safe reopening possible.

Love & God Bless You! Fr. Dan

Volunteering at Mass to Move Forward Fr. Dan requests you to consider giving crucial and much needed help in furthering God’s work in our two parishes by volunteering to be a member of the people assisting with the very many tasks that go with holding public Masses during the pandemic. We really need the help of a lot of people! You can do this by emailing: At Sacred Heart: Nick Frega at [email protected] At Our Lady’s: Kate Neal at [email protected]

In addition you may be contacted to request your help in this way. We are especially grateful for your willingness in this challenging time to being open to doing a ministry other than your usual one – temporarily – due to the special needs our parishes have.

Please keep safety front and center. We strongly encourage you, especially if you are at risk due to age or a medical condition, to limit your involvement to what is safe for you. You might ask yourself: “If my doctor knew I was doing this, would he approve?” For some, that may mean connecting by phone, internet or mail, instead of face to face, at this time.

Thank you!

Congratulations to a Scholarship Recipient! We are glad to acknowledge Peter Delmonico, member of Our Lady’s Parish and of the Newton North High School Class of 2020, as one of the recipients of the Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship. This scholarship, which we advertise in the bulletin each year, is given out annually in memory of Paul, who was killed in combat in Vietnam in 1968. It is awarded to well-rounded student athletes who are actively involved in their school, religion, and community. Character is the most essential quality in determining finalists.

Pete received the scholarship in memory of Lt. Edward Walsh, Jr., Boston Fire Department, who died in the line of duty in 2014 and himself was the scholarship award recipient in 1989.

Pete was confirmed at Our Lady’s in 2018. He will attend Boston College in the fall. Congratulations, Pete! We wish you the best of luck and God’s blessings always!

Virtual Speaker Series Has Begun! We recently premiered our SHOL Collaborative Friday Afternoon Speaker Series, “Summer School”—a biweekly speaker series that is held online and features the wisdom of our collaborative. So many of you have expertise in areas that we all have questions about, and now is a wonderful time to share that wisdom. The series features someone from our community offering a 15-20 minute presentation on a topic of their choosing, followed by an opportunity to dialogue and ask questions. This is a wonderful way to learn about relevant topics and also help us get to know one another.

Friday, June 12, 2pm-3pm: Health Care Proxy: What It Is and Why We All Need One

Zoom Meeting ID: 775 020 6110, Password: 849181 Karen Lourence MS, RN, PCCN, and Barbara Madden Ed.D., RN, will discuss the Massachusetts Health Care Proxy form, including the Roman Catholic Health Care Proxy. They will also answer questions about other advance directives for health care.

Karen and Barbara are from Sacred Heart Parish and are members of the choir and other ministries of the parish. Karen has been a nurse for over 35 years and is currently a staff nurse

on a general medicine inpatient unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Barbara has been a nurse for over 55 years, mainly as a nurse educator, and more recently as inpatient surgical unit staff at Newton Wellesley Hospital and as a sexual assault nurse for the Department of Public Health. In June 2019, they completed Archdiocesan training in Foundations of Faith Community Nursing.

Upcoming: June 26: Discerning your vocation

If you are interested in presenting, please reach out to Kate ([email protected] or 617-527-7560 x219) with your topic idea! Topics need to be church-appropriate, and you must have some credentialed expertise on the subject to present.

Online Book of Intentions Despite our physical separation from one another right now, praying for one another’s needs remains an essential part of our parish life. We’ve moved the Book of Intentions online, so that we can continue to pray for each other during this crisis. If you would like the Collaborative to pray for your intention, please visit https://sholnewton.org/online-book-of-intentions. These intentions will be remembered by our priests every time they celebrate Mass. For confidentiality, the Online Book of Intentions will not be published.

May 31 ~ Pentecost Sunday We hear in our readings today that being filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples were unable to remain silent about how they had experienced the mighty acts of God. On this feast of Pentecost, the apostles went out among the people and began spreading Jesus’ message, establishing the beginning of the Church. This feast reminds us that the Holy Spirit has been poured upon us giving us the gifts we need to speak of the ways God is working in our lives. Don’t let this day end without speaking to someone about God’s mighty deeds. Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love!

Ringing the Bells at Our Lady’s We have recently begun ringing the church bells at Our Lady’s each day. We are also planning to ring the bells in a few weeks in honor of our high school graduates. We hope the bells bring joy and prayerfulness to those who hear them, especially in this time when we long for regular sacramental life.

Note: Sacred Heart Church does not have any bells in its tower; otherwise, those would be ringing too!

2020 Catholic Appeal The COVID-19 pandemic has postponed the launch of the Catholic Appeal in our parishes. This presents a unique challenge in continuing the work of our ministries as the Appeal provides nearly half of the funding for these efforts. With the knowledge that many of you are also facing challenging financial realities, and with concern for the people we serve, your prayerful consideration is greatly appreciated. Your support will make a significant difference as we attempt to continue serving the Catholic faithful and all our brothers and sisters in need. To learn more about Your Church at Work or to make a donation, visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.org. Thank you!

Msgr. Dennis Sheehan—Homily Given on May 11, 2008 Pentecost Sunday—Liturgical Year A

Homily reflections are also available each week online at www.sholnewton.org/godeeper. Photo Album will return in future bulletins. In the meantime, visit us on Instagram @sholnewton

So there they were, that first Christian Pentecost Sunday. There were probably 120 of them at the most. Our first reading tells us they were “all gathered together”. The doors were likely shut. Probably they were having a prayer time. It’s all very familiar, a lot like our Sunday gatherings here.

Then comes the unexpected! Tongues of fire come down on them. They start acting strange, almost as if they were drunk. The whole building shakes and rumbles as if it threatened to burst apart. The doors fall off their hinges. A fire breaks out. Welcome to the first Pentecost!

Today we hear that part in our first reading. Too bad, but the folks in Rome who put together our readings left out the next part. It’s definitely what Paul Harvey of radio fame would call “the rest of the story”. Let me tell you about it and then ask a Pentecost question.

The disciples filled with the Holy Spirit pour out onto the streets outside their little makeshift church. A crowd gathers quickly, drawn no doubt by the noise, the fire, and the seemingly drunken lot of Spirit-filled disciples.

Peter stands up and calls for attention. What happens? In about 3 minutes of bare-bones preaching, he converts about 3000 new members. That’s right - 3000. There’s the real Pentecost. Sure, the Spirit filled the 120. But the Spirit that day, in under 5 minutes, add 3000 new members to the small Jerusalem church.

On average, Our Lady’s parish enrolls 3–5 new members or families a week. In modern Catholic numbers, that’s average. But let me ask you. Suppose at the end of my homily today

3000 people came crashing through the doors. Where would they sit? Would there be enough worship aids?

Well, you say – Father Dennis, that’s just not going to happen. No, probably not. But are you and I happy with that? I, for one, would love to see it happen, we’d have a huge problem.

For one thing, our nice familiar routine would have to be changed. We would not just be a friendly little family. Those 3000 would be people we hardly know. Worse, since the Holy Spirit did the inviting, they’d probably be people we wouldn’t choose to be members. Then, too, they’d start asking questions: Why do you do it this way? They’d ask for new programs. We’d have to knock down familiar walls, open new doors, and - God forbid - change.

Pentecost warns us: Get ready for the invasion. If you settle into the comfortable and the routine, you’ve probably banked the fire. If you like a cozy religious club, you’ve probably stopped the noisy whirlwind.

Pentecost told those 120 they were not yet the church. They were not the church until they were open to the 3000 new souls the Holy Spirit was calling. Pentecost gave that first Jerusalem church a problem. Pentecost asks this church a few questions. How willing are we to give up our cozy family and comfortable sense of clubbiness? What about all the new people? Will we say, “All are welcome”? Do we mean it? Really? Then light the fire and open the doors. Let the Pentecost wind blow freely. Come Holy Spirit. Renew us. Burn us. Blow us away. Where to? They didn’t ask that first Pentecost. Neither should we.

Thank You and Farewell, Fr. Kevin! Officially effective this Monday, June 1, Fr. Kevin is leaving us to begin serving as the Director of the Catholic Center and as Priest-Campus Minister. We do expect that we will see Fr. Kevin again, although the pandemic means that we can’t predict when that will be. So, for now, we all wish him many thanks for his ministry here over the past year, much luck at BU, and God’s blessings always.

————————————————————— As Fr. Dan wrote at the end of March in first sharing the news, this change is a big loss for us and a huge gain for BU.

Fr. Dan went on to write, “I have been delighted with Fr. Kevin in every way. His priestly ministry and his companionship in the rectory with myself and Fr. Dennis has been such a blessing. Fr. Kevin is brilliant, devout, hardworking, considerate, and so much more. One consolation for me is that I would rather have had an excellent parochial vicar like Fr. Kevin for a short time, than a mediocre one for a long time. When you have someone great, like Fr. Kevin, you cannot expect his talent will not be re-quired sooner rather than later as a Pastor or, in this case, ‘Director’.”

————————————————————— Our Lady’s parishioner Chris Graf submitted these words of thanks to Fr. Kevin:

Dear Fr. Kevin,

Thank you for your service to all of us in the Sacred Heart/Our Lady Collaborative, particularly for your prayerful liturgies and your thoughtfully crafted homilies. In these days of necessary isolation, your filming of the Masses and services especially dur-ing Holy Week and your beautiful singing of the Exsultet brought much joy and comfort. As you move into the next stage of your journey, may the Lord bless and keep you always.

Chris Graf —————————————————————

Parishioner-submitted thank you notes for Rosemary Seibold on the occasion of her retirement will run in future weeks. Would you like to submit a (public) thank you to Fr. Kevin or Rosemary? It is not too late! Please send to Kristina at [email protected], and we will do our best to include it in a future bulletin, as space allows.

Sacred Heart News

News from the Guild On behalf of Dr. Maura Iversen, Guild President, and the members of the Guild of St. Francis, we would like to thank everyone who helped us raise $12,322.26 to donate to Sacred Heart! Normally in June, we have our annual Communion Breakfast and Annual Meeting, where we announce the $12,000+ donation. We also announce the slate of officers for the next year. So many of you work for our events and help us raise the money; we are grateful! And didn’t we enjoy working together all year! Hopefully, we will be virus-free enough this year to work together again.

Happily, two parishioners are joining our board for the first time this year; it is not too late for you to come on the board too. Give one of us a call; we will let you know the scoop! We will need your creative ideas in a “new normal” Guild year.

We are proud to announce the officers for next year: President: Pat Acton Vice Presidents: Pat Mitchell, Kathie Long

Recording Secretary: Barbara Hatem Corresponding Secretary: Jane McGuire Treasurer: Cathy Schneider Spiritual Advisor: Kate Neal Additional Board Members: Angelita Altea, Olimpia Estela Caceres-Brown, Adeline Crovo, Mary English, Maura Iversen, Carolyn Lopes, Jane McGuire, Lisa Nahabedian, Mary Salustro

Mass Cards Despite the parish office being closed for the time being, Mass cards are still available. Please contact Sioux at [email protected] or leave a voicemail at ext.110.

Religious Education News All CCD families should have received at-home curriculum online by this time. Please make sure students complete the remaining lessons for the year. Most grades require a series of responses to catechists for each lesson in order to maintain accountability. Please respectfully respond on students’ progress and maintain contact with your child’s catechist until the lesson is completed.

Parents of Grade 2 sacramental preparation students should especially alert the catechist that children have completed materials that were sent home. We thank you for your earnest cooperation.

God bless you in this time of trial and gift of family time! Michelle Solomon, Director of Religious Ed. [email protected] 617-969-2248 ext. 126

~Easter 2020: In Memoriam~ Today we come together as God’s people to celebrate with family and friends the Resurrection of Christ from the dead. As we cele-brate this day of hope and new life, we recall those who have gone before us in faith. In your charity, we ask you to remember in prayer friends, neighbors and loved ones whose names appear here. May these and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace of the Risen Jesus.

New to our Collaborative? Welcome! Please introduce yourself after Mass or at the parish offices. We want to know and serve you! We hope you will participate in our parishes with your prayers, presence, talents, and steward-ship according to your means.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all vigil and Sunday Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitaliza-tions, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle

Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's; for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Com-munion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristi-na Preman at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of preparation is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.

During this period of separation from the normal course of sacra-mental life, we continue to pray for the intentions of our commu-nity of faith, and the priests of the collaborative continue to offer weekday (private) Masses for the intentions listed here.

Resumption of Full Weekend Mass Schedule, Scheduled Confession Times, and Weekday Masses

Full Weekend Mass Schedule Beginning Sunday, June 14, we plan to resume celebration of the 6:00pm Mass at Our Lady’s.

In the coming weeks, we hope and plan to resume our full weekend Mass schedule across the Collaborative, adding back Sacred Heart’s Saturday 4:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm Masses, as well as Our Lady’s Sunday 8:00am Mass.

Scheduled Confession Times Beginning this weekend, Confessions will be heard every Saturday, 2pm-3pm.

—In May and July, this will be at Our Lady’s only, in the Main Church. —In June and August, this will be at Sacred Heart only, in the Upper Church.

Weekday Masses—NEW Schedule Weekday Masses will resume on Monday, June 8. On this day, we will begin a new, year-round schedule for daily Masses, similar to the summer schedule we have used for a few years now.

—Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart at 9:00am on Monday, Friday, and Saturday only. —Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady’s at 7:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only.

This change is due to Fr. Kevin’s departure; if we should be assigned a new priest, we will certainly reconsider this schedule.

Thank you for your patience as we proceed carefully and with safety at the forefront of our minds!
