New & Ongoing in Our Community

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

The outreach in our collaborative to Jesus, present in the needy and vulnerable, is so wonderful! Thanks to you! It includes care for the poor, unborn, climate change, immigrants, homebound elderly, and on and on. Thank you!

The abuse of minors by some clergy is a horrendous crime that has shocked, angered, and deeply saddened us. The terrible management of the abusing priests by some bishops has been infuriating! The resulting damage done to many victims/survivors has been huge in so many cases.

What got done in 2002? Priest Accountability. The U.S. Catholic Bishops adopted a ZERO TOLERANCE policy – meaning that all priests credibly accused are immediately removed from ministry, and all those whose accusations are substantiated are prohibited from all ministry for life. Also, child safety programs were instituted – the programs in our two parishes are superb. Since the adoption of these 2002 policies, incidents of abuse have declined dramatically. Also, the Archdiocese of Boston was sent Cardinal Sean, regarded by many, including many victims/survivors, as one of the best bishops at battling abuse.

What did not get done in 2002? “Bishop Accountability” for either the commission of abuse or

the mismanagement of abusers. While some bishops have been held accountable others have not, and there is no nationwide policy on Bishop Accountability to parallel the one we have had for priests since 2002.

What might happen at the meeting on abuse in Rome this coming Thursday – Sunday (February 21-24)? As I write this on February 10, many journalists in the Catholic media hope the zero tolerance policy in place for priests in the U.S. and many other countries, but not all countries, will be decreed to be expanded to all nations, and that it will be applied to bishops as well as priests.

What about a formal policy to deal with the mismanagement of abusers by Bishops in the U.S.? Getting this done nationwide is a high priority for Cardinal Sean. Some journalists speculate that the Rome meeting this week will set the foundation for the U.S. Bishops to take up a detailed process of “U.S. Bishop Accountability” at their Spring 2019 meeting.

Cardinal Sean’s February 9 blog on supporting life can be found at http://www.cardinalseansblog.org/. Well said!

Representative: Sr. Mary Farren, RGS Parish: Our Lady’s Contact: kitchenlady.farren@ comcast.net

As a parishioner at Our Lady's for approximately 20 years, I'm pleased to share my time and abilities by serving on the Pastoral Council, leading a faith-sharing group, and helping with bereavement and oth-er ministries. As an active Sister of the Good Shep-herd, I bring the experience of serving in senior ad-ministrative positions in child welfare agencies in NYC and, in Boston, directly serving homeless fami-lies living with HIV/AIDS, most of whom were also living in recovery from substance use and as survi-vors of personal violence. I find spiritual nourishment participating in our parish and believe that it is im-portant to contribute to helping make what is good become even better. To do this, I welcome and en-courage parishioners to share their comments, ideas, and observations so we all work together in living our call to discipleship.

Msgr. Dennis Sheehan Homily Given February 14, 2010

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time—Liturgical Year C

Imagine for a moment you’re going on a trip to a faraway, exotic country. How would you get ready? You’d probably get a guide-book. The guidebook would help you with the culture, language, and customs of a different world.

Now turn to Jesus’ beatitudes and woes in today’s Gospel. What is Jesus about here? Why is he talking about rich and poor, about hungry and full?

You might easily tell me those “blessed” and “woes” are about us. Maybe Jesus is telling us we need to be poor or hungry or unhappy.

If that’s what Jesus is doing, he’s pretty much wasting his time. Advice like that just makes us frustrated and guilty. Maybe I’d like to think it would be nice to be persecuted – but it’s not too likely that I’ll do much about it.

The beatitudes and woes as marching orders for my behavior don’t make sense. Besides, Jesus never says I have to get poor or weepy or persecuted. He is describing – not prescribing. He’s being a guide in a strange and new situation called “the kingdom of God”.

If the beatitudes are not instructions for me, maybe they’re about the world. Maybe we need poor, sad, persecuted people to bring out the best in all of us. But that, too, is just plain silly. Jesus knows how the world works. It doesn’t look on the poor, sad, and persecuted with respect. As far as the world is concerned, these beatitudes make no sense at all.

The beatitudes we hear today are not about us. Nor are they about how to make the world better. The beatitudes are Jesus’ guide to the kingdom of God. They are about who God is, who God blesses, what the world of God is like. They are Jesus’ guidebook to the culture, nature, and values of the world of God.

Jesus is giving a picture of God. He does so, no doubt, in the hope that his picture of God will have some valuable impact on us. But – that’s up to us.

What do these beatitudes say? They say God’s values and God’s priorities are quite different from the ones we operate by. Jesus is giving us a snapshot of life the way God lives it. In God’s life, losers, insignificant players, and little people count a great deal.

We’re not hearing a moral code today. We’re not hearing a lesson in how to live in our world. The point of the beatitudes is to shed light for us on how God sees and on how God loves.

If God is really like that, what could it mean? It’s a question well worth thinking about as another Lent approaches.

Sacred Heart News What’s New at the 12:00pm Mass If you have worshipped at the 12:00pm Mass in the last several months, you may have noticed that the community is growing both in size and in diversity. It is our hope that the liturgy (Mass) reflects the community gathered every Sunday. In response, we will be introducing a new chapter of the 12:00pm Mass in the months of January and February. We hope the experience will energize and better reflect the community present and help new parishioners use their gifts. In particular, you will notice new instruments and musicians, new and more contemporary music, and new lectors and Ministers of Communion. If you have any questions or would like to get more involved, please contact Erica Johnson at [email protected] or Brian Romer Niemiec at [email protected].

Hot Cereal Needed In February, we are collecting hot cereal. Donations can be dropped off during the week in the lower elevator lobby OR at weekend Masses in either the elevator lobby or the upper church foyer at Sacred Heart.

Interested in Learning to Knit? Anyone interested in learning the basics of knitting or crocheting is invited to join the prayer shawl ministry group for some lessons. We envision expanding our caring group, but, if you just want to learn for yourself, that is perfectly fine. Please contact Peg Miller at [email protected] or 617-244-3036 so that we have an idea of how many people might be coming, and we will set up an initial meeting place and time. Hope you’ll join us!

Looking For Broom Bush Branches

The decorating crew is collecting plant material for the Lenten decorations. Some stems of a Scotch (or other variety) broom bush would be ideal. If you have a bush in need of pruning or know someone who does, please contact Cathy Schneider at [email protected] or the parish office.

Help Others During Lent Lent begins on Wednesday, March 6; Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls will be available the weekend of March 2nd & 3rd. Plan to be a part of this nation-wide effort to support needy families throughout the world.

New Balcony Railing at Sacred Heart

For many years, the balcony railing in the upper church has been too low to ensure the safety of our youngest parishioners. Recently, a new, higher railing was installed. While we still encourage everyone to sit together in the church pews each weekend, the balcony space is now safe and available for overflow seating - and for a new handbell choir, which will be forming later this year!

President’s Day—Office Closed

In observance of President’s Day this Monday, February 18, the parish office will be closed. It will reopen on Tuesday at the normal hour. Thank you!

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

Update Last fall, we delivered new bed and bath linens for six young moms and their children, ages 4 months to 2 years. Two more moms will be moving into Bridge’s Single Parent Home this spring.

Thank you to all who have supported this outreach financially and to the Prayer Shawl Ministry for providing handmade baby blankets. If you would like to make a contribution to help us continue to brighten the rooms of Bridge clients, please send a check payable to Sacred Heart Parish, with “Bridge Fund” on the memo line, to the parish office.

Our Lady’s News February Book Club

The February Book Club selection is Gaudete et

Exsulatate (Rejoice and Be Glad) by Pope Francis. Recommended by Fr. Dan (who has read it

twice!), Francis discusses the call to holiness in today’s world. The February meeting will be Thursday, February 28, 7:00pm, in the Colella Room

at Our Lady’s Parish Office. Two copies of the text are available for loan. Call Ed Desmond at Our Lady’s Parish Office to reserve a copy. For more information

about the Book Club, contact Jim Allaire at 617-244-2143.

Coffee Hour: Be A Part of Something Special

Sundays after 10am Mass We are thrilled to have coffee hour after 10:00am Mass back, but we still need some more volunteers to keep it going! Can you get to Mass half an hour early to set up? Are you willing to come downstairs after Communion and help serve for an hour? Do you like to chat and want to stay and help clean up? WE NEED YOU. If you would be willing to help out at one coffee hour a month from now until May, please contact Kate Neal at [email protected] or x219.

St. Vincent de Paul Update We Help People. The past few months have been busy ones for the Collaborative’s St. Vincent de Paul conference. In the fall, we conducted a food drive to benefit the Centre Street Food Pantry, as well as a clothing drive. More recently, we assisted with the Thanksgiving and Christmas meal and gift drives. Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, meals were provided for more than 85 neighbor families, helping to make the holidays much more enjoyable!

The holiday drives are always among the most enjoyable, yet humbling, events for our volunteers. The people we help are always deeply grateful.

We also continued to make home visits to people who called the parishes for help. In most cases, these families are just managing to get along until some crisis occurs – one of our members calls them “potholes in the road” – like a job loss, illness, or separation, and they have nothing in reserve to help them bridge the gap. During the past few months, we helped more than 10 families, primarily with rent and utility assistance. Too often, those in need in our community are hidden from our sight. But thanks to our generous donors, we have been able to help these families get through a difficult time.

If you are interested in volunteering, send us an email at [email protected]. And donations are always welcome and appreciated! Checks can be made out to St. Vincent de Paul and sent to Our Lady’s.

Bristol Lodge Donations: Thank You!

Thank you to all who have donated tomato sauce and soda in the past few months. We are all set for now! Our Confirmation Program will be using the sauce and soda, along with previously-donated pasta, to prepare and serve dinner at the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen in Waltham. Your donations will help us feed 50-70 people once each month through the rest of this school year. Thank you so much for your generosity!

President’s Day—Office Closed In observance of President’s Day this Monday, February 18, the parish office will be closed. It will reopen on Tuesday at the normal hour. Thank you!

It costs about $500 to send one parish youth to Workcamp. We ask that you consider giving, according to your means. We are most grateful for whatever you can give, including your prayers of support. Thank you!

WORKCAMP 2019 This June, high school students from Our Lady’s Parish will be serving at Workcamp for the 23rd

consecutive year, this year in Saranac Lake, NY, in the Adirondack region.
