GENERAL STUDIES UPDATE -

Dear Parents:

The year is off to an auspi-cious beginning, as children have acclimated to their new classes and formal instruction has begun.

I would like to share some initiatives that have been started this year in order to enhance the educational ex-perience of our students:

Rabbi Wieder, our Middle School Science instructor, has been appointed the YBH Sci-ence Coordinator. He has undertaken a review of the elementary school curriculum in order to ensure that our children receive a science ed-ucation that is increasingly aligned with standards estab-lished by such entities as the National Research Council and the Next Generation Sci-ence Standards. As the scope, sequence and focus of each year’s science program are finalized, this information will be shared with families. In a nutshell, you will find that the traditional “mile-wide; inch deep” curriculum pro-vides students with a superfi-cial understanding of science processes and content. We aim to provide students with more in-depth study of fewer topics each year. Over their elementary school experi-ence, students will have op-portunities to explore physi-cal science, life science and earth science with visits to our science lab to provide hands-on experiences.

In other areas of our curricu-lum, we have re-evaluated

our social studies curriculum and have added the study of the geography, economy and history of our home state of New Jersey in fourth grade and early American history in fifth grade. This will provide our students with the neces-sary foundation needed for future learning of American history and give them added opportunity to read infor-mation text.

In the area of literacy, teach-ers are continuing to refine their implementation of the Reading Street Program. This comprehensive approach to the multiple strands of litera-cy, including foundation skills, comprehension, writing, speaking and listening forms the core of our instructional program. Teachers are identi-fying ways to maximize the resources available in this program to meet the needs of all learners.

Finally, we have begun the process of meeting as grade level instructional teams. Teachers have already started to work collaboratively on curriculum and to share suc-cessful instructional practices. I have already received won-derful and gratifying feedback from teachers who feel part of a team of educators with a common purpose.

I wish you all a g’mar chasi-mah tovah and continued

nachas from all our children.

LIMUDEI KODESH UPDATE—BOYS Dear Parents, Beginning a new school year in such close proximity to Rosh Hashana highlights the great opportunity before us. A new beginning with a clean slate is waiting to be filled with engag-ing and exciting educational experiences. Nevertheless, the calendar year doesn’t stand alone; it is built upon last year. We don’t remain static from where we were a year ago and just start over. We grow from year to year and start from a different point. Similarly, we begin this school year at a better place than last year. As individuals and as a school we’ve incor-porated lessons learned and aim toward loftier goals with new pro-grams and ambitions.

Having successfully integrated the Cha-yenu program for Yedios Klalios from grades three to sev-en, we look to up-grade it by adding a Chidon and a new component for the eighth grade.

Innovative teaching methods are most effective in elevating a student’s learning. The key

is retention of the information and skills. Consistent review and practice is vital for suc-cess. Over the next weeks we will Be’ezras H-shem be rolling out a comprehensive Chazara program for the middle school grades. The Talmudo Biyado program is a structured and highly motivating system of cumulative review that leads to mastery of the Gemara learned. Inspiring learning both during and after school hours, the incentives are re-warding, but not nearly as

much as the elation felt with true success.

In the same vein, I’d like to give due credit to two very special talmidim who rose to the Chazarah challenge. At the end of the past school year, I posed the following challenge to our then seventh graders.

The Gemara in Maseches Eiru-vin explains that it is important to review new material at least four times. In line with that,

I challenged the boys to try to

review the year’s worth of

Gemara, the entire first perek of Bava Kamah, four times through the course of the summer. Congratulations to Yossi Rybak and Reuven Karfunkel, current eighth grad-ers for successfully meeting that ambitious goal. They have truly mastered their learning. As a reward, they will each receive a set of seforim.

In the past, Morah Perele Mendlowitz and Mrs. Margu-lies have collaborated with me on important initiatives. These included revamping the kriah program for the ECD and de-signing supplemental instruc-tion groups for struggling ele-mentary students. This year, I will have greater involvement

in these departments. The objective is to align even more closely the progres-sion from pre-school through eighth grade, as well as to facilitate im-proved specific objectives for each child with input from the special services and mainstream teachers. I look forward to sharing

exciting develop-ments as the year progresses.

In closing, it is a thrill to see your children’s happy faces again.

I wish everyone a

G’mar Chasimah Tova and a very successful school year.

Welcome new student,

PTA CORNER The YBH PTA welcomes you

all back!

Stay tuned for the Succah party listings to come.

Thank you to all those who volunteered to host.

Reminder to those who

have not yet paid their PTA dues to please send in $36 to ensure that we can con-tinue enhancing our chil-dren's year with exciting

events and more.

Wishing you all a G'mar Chasima Tova and

much success in the coming year.

Rabbi Mendlowitz’s Kitah Beis: We have been learning about Teshuvah, Tefillah & Tzedakah and discussing ways we can improve our-selves. We will give tzedakah, daven and work on improving our friendships. We made a bulletin board (see front page) illustrating the importance of these topics. We also made Shana Tova cards and mailed them to our parents. In Chumash, we have begun learning Parshas Lech Lecha and look forward to learning more about the parsha. We wish everyone a good new year.

Mr. Rubinetti’s Middle School Language Arts class: We have been establishing classroom policies, and we have begun some pre-assessment activities that will include grammar, writing and reading. Be-cause the purpose of the pre-assessments is to es-tablish where students are with their skill develop-ment coming into the new school year, they will not count in the students' grades. I look forward to working with the boys to enhance their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills during the course of the school year.

Rabbi Goldberg’s Kitah Alef: The boys of kitah alef have been learning all about Yom Kippur from their own personal machzorim and demonstrating kaporos and other important practices that are integral to Yom Kippur. We will soon be visiting a real succah with Rabbi Goldberg to visualize all that we are learning.

Rabbi Wieder’s Middle School Science classes: Grade 7B has started learning about microscopes and the microscopic world around us. Our plan is to examine our cheek cells. The boys of 8B are testing their senses by measuring the qualitative and quantitative properties of apples and jelly gum drops, a tasty science experiment!

ECD HIGHLIGHTS

A Peek Into Our Week:

Rabbi Moshe Laster, Kitah Gimmel’s Assistant Rebbe: This past week, the 3B class learned about Rivkah and Yaakov's hishtadlus in making sure that Yaakov re-ceived the brachos from Yitzchok. They learned how Yaakov "tricked" Yitzchok while not straying from be-ing an ish emes. Additionally, they reviewed some basic halachos of Yom Kippur, with attention given to how viduy is performed in shul (see front page).
