It is important to note that Shavuos is, in a sense, like Yom Kippur. The של ה הקודשsays that Shavuos is the יום הדיןfor each person in terms of how much he will be זוכהto receive the Torah for his or her family. The ילקוט שמעוני פ( יתרו) says the following mashul: The son of a king was sick and was eventually healed from his illness. The king decided not to send his child to school right away and waited three months for his son to regain his strength. He had a chef and a nutri!onist make sure his son ate well and got the proper nutri!on to get his healthy glow back. A"er this process, he sent him back to school. The Bnei Yisrael were in a similar situa!on in מצרים. They were spiritually ill from the influences of מצריםand Hashem did not feel they were ready to receive the Torah under those circum- stances. They needed to wait awhile to return to their original מדרגה. They needed to eat the מן, drink from the בארה של מרים, which would give them not only physical nourishment, but spiritual healing as well. As a result of the care and chizuk from the leaders of B’nei Yisrael in the מדבר, they would reach levels of kedusha appropriate for קבלת התורה. A"er all this prepara!on, משה רבינוfelt they were s!ll not ready and was מוסיף יום אחד מדעתו, he added on an addi!onal day of prepara!on on his own. Every Jew should make the proper prepara!ons for himself as a הכנהfor קבלת התורה. Even those who learn Torah throughout the year need to make a קבלה מחודשתjust as the B’nei Yisrael did in the מדבר. The Shabbos before Shavuos has a special name. It may not be as famous as Shabbos Shuva or Shabbos Hagadol. It’s called Shabbos Derech Eretz, as in דרך ארץ קדמה לתורה. The רבינו יונהsays in Pirkei Avos on the Mishna: אם אין דרך ארץ ,אין תורה” . A person needs to be מתקןhimself with good middos in order for the Torah to dwell within him. To learn Torah and work on middos a"erwards is not the way of the Torah as נעשה ונשמעindicates. The sefer יראה ודעתsays that the minhag of decora!ng the בית הכנסתis beau!ful, but it is even more beau!ful to adorn oneself with beau!ful middos. An important way to strive for this is to start apprecia!ng what Hashem has given us. A person who is content can work on his middos and build a rela!onship with Hashem. The seventh and eighth grade students were privileged to hear divrei chizuk from a special Jew, Rabbi Yehoshua Hoffman, a quadriplegic who gave the students a greater apprecia!on for all that Hashem gives us and the ability to deal with challenges and disappointments in life. The right a%tude and perspec!ve leads one to being more content, with greater oppor- tunity for תיקון המידותand renewed commitment to Torah. PTA CORNER As we reflect back on our year, we would like to thank all those whose efforts have helped the

PTA accomplish so much on behalf of our children this year. Thanks to all those who support the PTA and get involved in many ways, the students of YBH have

enjoyed class trips to various places in conjunc"on with each

class's curriculum, ECD train rides, trips and mul"ple exci"ng

programs, a%er school clubs, new instruments for music,

mul"ple speakers and intriguing visitors, Rosh Chodesh treats,

Yom Ha'atzmaut falafel lunches, Middle School mother-daughter

learning with inspiring words from Rabbi Glasser, 6th grade

girls’ Bat Mitzvah brunch, indoor recess game equipment,

smashingly successful Wednesday enrichment

programs and last but not least, beau"ful outdoor courts for

mul"ple sports.

Thank you for helping the PTA help make YBH the fantas"c

place it is!

Chag Kasher V'sameach to all and have a healthy and res*ul

summer.

Dear Parents,

The גמרא in מס' שבת דף פ"ח relates

the drama"c events that took place

when משה רבינו went to שמים to

receive the תורה. The מלאכים objected

to the תורה being given to humans and

insisted that its proper place for its

משה Hashem told .שמים is in קדושה

to respond to their claim.

responded משה

that the מצוות are

clearly designed for

humans, as מלאכים

don’t have parents

to honor, etc. One

classic challenge

that משה presented

was: “Do you have

a יצר הרע you must

overcome?”

Following Moshe’s

response, the מלאכים

conceded that the

.תורה should receive the בני ישראל

Moshe’s message was that our very

human characteris"c of facing chal-

lenges is exactly why the תורה was

des"ned for man. It is the very nature

of facing adversity that brings out our

strengths and fosters growth. Yes, it is

that growth through effort that makes

us fit to receive the תורה.

I cannot think of a be/er adjec"ve to

encapsulate our school year. Every

lesson, every program and yes, every

game is planned to mo"vate, challenge

and facilitate posi"ve growth. The

aspect; from the upli%ing רוחניות

שבת רוח to the inspira"onal תפילות

and more, all leading to more

meaningful 'עבודת ה.

In academics, we kept revisi"ng and

refreshing our approach to achieve

more. Implemen"ng an enhanced

skill-based curriculum requires focused

effort on the part of rebbeim and

Learning to decode the words .תלמידים

and פסוקים and then move to

comprehension and higher level

thinking, such as making inferences

and comparing and contras"ng,

requires diligence and stamina that

tests our limits and makes us grow.

Focusing on בין אדם לחבירו leads to

all-around growth. Focusing on seeing

the other person’s perspec"ve and

resolving issues produc"vely are just

two points of em-

phasis. Yet these

skills accomplish as

much in crea"ng a

yeshiva as a

suppor"ve and safe

environment for

every תלמיד to

thrive.

While I could go on

for much longer,

this ar"cle can’t.

I’ll conclude with a ברכה that this

year’s Shavuos should be greeted with

a sincere קבלת התורה by all of us. A

that produces a desire and קבלה

commitment to grow in our learning

and יראת שמים. May we have the זכות

to look back and see how far we’ve

come, thus inspiring us onward.

Good Shabbos and Good Yom Tov,

Rabbi Binyomin Perlstein,

Associate Menahel

A Peek Into Our Week:

Mrs. Hack’s Sixth Grade Math Class: What a year it’s been! Aer reviewing the rules for decimals, frac-"ons, and percents and expanding our knowledge and understanding of how they are all interconnected, we began Pre-

Algebra! It was interes"ng to see how everything in math is all relat-ed, and rules that they had learned for decimals and frac"ons were now being used for working with nega"ve and posi"ve numbers as well. With the start of equa"ons, they also saw how some of the number proper"es, like the Commuta"ve Property, really come into play to help us solve more difficult equa"ons. When rewri"ng phrases as algebraic expressions, we saw how the rules that we use for transla"ng from Lashon HaKodesh into English could help us learn this new skill. We also saw in our study of geometry how we need to know math in order to learn Gemara. The boys have learned so much!

Mr. Buckman’s Math Classes: As we wrap up the year in my 5

th, 7

th & 8

th grade math classes, we

are keeping things fresh and entertaining. In the 5th

grade, we learned about the fascina"ng number π (3.14), which relates the diameter of any circle to its circumference. This provided the natural springboard to teach how to mul"ply decimals. In the 7

th

grade, not only did we learn the famous Pythagorean Theorem (a

2 + b

2 = c

2), but we demonstrated the proof of the theorem using

oak tag cutouts. In addi"on, we related the theorem to Fermat’s Last Theorem which stated that a

n + b

n = c

n is impossible for any ex-

ponent (n) other than 2. And for our outgoing graduates we are wrapping up their last year at YBH with the explora"on of the inter-es"ng concepts of permuta"ons and combina"ons. A happy summer vaca"on to all!

Rabbi Bacharach’s Kitah Daled: The fourth grade is more that half-way through מסכת מדות. We are excited to learn so much about the and now feel a special connec"on to it. What perfect בית המקדש "ming as we are learning פרשת יתרו in Chumash and are also learning about מעמד הר סיני and the עשרת הדברות just in "me for זמן מתן תורתינו. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents of the fourth grade for being such wonderful partners in your sons’ chinuch.

Rabbi Wieder’s Science Lab: The fih grade boys are enjoying a weekly science lab enrichment class learning about atoms chemistry and how ba%eries work by crea"ng ba%eries out of lemons, copper and zinc.

Learning Program Rewards: On Sunday May 22nd, approximately 100 boys in grades 1-8 stayed aer school for a barbeque as reward for their par"cipa"on in the Pesach learning program. The boys were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and chips (served by 8B students) and heard a story and message about the importance of learning throughout the year, especially during breaks from Yeshiva. The barbeque generated great chizuk and feeling of achdus among the boys in prepara"on for Kabbalas HaTorah. Special thanks to the Perlowitz family for sponsoring this event.

5B 's culminang acvity was a presentaon of

their state report project.

ECD HIGHLIGHTS

The kindergarten and Pre 1A children enjoyed their trips to farms, where they had wonderful

interac!ve experiences with animals and nature. We would like to express our

apprecia!on to our amazing PTA

for making these trips possible.

The Pre1A classes par!cipated in plan!ng our own YBH flower gardens with Rabbi Wieder, a#er the eighth grade students prepared the gardens for plan!ng. Hashem even watered the flowers with rain as soon as we finished plan!ng to make sure

the flowers grow. Watching our children grow and bloom like the flowers they are plan!ng seems a

perfect way to end the school year. We look forward to

seeing them all back here next year, I’H.
