Dear Parents, Welcome back! B’syita dish-maya the school year began with enthusiasm and excite-ment. It was wonderful to welcome and greet all of our girls to another wonderful year of learning and growing at YBH after a refreshing summer vacation. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new girls who joined the YBH family. I look forward to getting to know you and your daugh-ters over the coming days. This year presents us with the unique circumstance of the start of the school year coinciding closely with the start of our calendar year. The halls of YBH are perme-ating with preparations for the Yomim Noraim. It is heartwarming to walk through the hallways and listen to the inspirational lessons being taught so beautifully. How fitting it is that our enthusiastic chil-dren begin the school year with clean slates and high aspirations as they prepare for Rosh Hashanah . As they arrived to school with their new supplies to meet their teachers, they put their best foot forward as they strive to make this their best year. I couldn’t help thinking “Let us watch them and learn to apply this determination to start anew and build a better relationship with Hashem”. At our opening assembly on Tuesday, I shared a beautiful poem with the middle school girls about Hashem being our “captain”, waiting for us to raise our flag, to try our best and He is ready to help us. As the pasuk states, דרשו ה' בהמצאו וקראוהו ”

“ בהיותו קרוב , “Search for Hashem when He is found and call to Him when He is close”. The first through fifth graders heard an inspirational mashal about a shiny silver bell, illustrating the purpose of the shofer as a wake up call to do teshu-vah. All the girls received keychain tape measures to measure their “growth”. As the days go by, our bulle-tin board in the lobby active-ly displays mitzvos and thoughts about teshuvah that our girls are involved with during this time of year.

The Morohs had the oppor-tunity, along with the rest of the YBH staff, to participate in a meaningful Professional Development session at our In Service day before the start of school. We had the privilege of hearing Rabbi Jonathan Rietti expound on the topic of “The Art of the Deal; How to Teach Many Minds”. He discussed the importance of developing a rapport with each child and he explained the multiple levels of intelligence. Mrs. Lichtman presented a work-shop with Rick Wormeli on the topic of “Differentiated Grading”. It was an uplifting day as we were afforded many practical ideas to think about and implement as we continue to grow as educa-tors. We worked closely throughout the summer with each morah to further develop our curriculum by reinforcement and building of skills. We have updated our Chumash and Rashi baseline assessments which the morohs will be adminis-tering over the coming days. The assessments will help evaluate if our students are mastering the skills designed for each grade level. Build-ing upon the foundation of what was laid in the past is crucial for effective instruc-tion. Through assessments, we are working towards en-suring that our students master the skills which will enable them to move on to the next level, ultimately giving them the tools to be independent learners. It has been a tremendous nachas for us as we have heard particularly positive feedback from parents and students about the Yediyos Klaliyos program at YBH. The program has truly enhanced the girls’ learning experi-ence and has been useful to them as they further their education. This year, we have initiated a new component of the Yediyos Klaliyos program that will emphasize proper Hebrew spelling. We also designed a unified heading to be used by all grades when submitting an assign-ment to reinforce correct spelling of specific concepts. We look forward to contin-ued growth in this area.

Aligned with a quality stand-ard of education, our goal at YBH is to imbue the girls with a love for Torah and mitzvos. We have many creative and inspirational programs planned over the course of the year to facili-tate development of this connection. The elementary school girls have already been introduced to our “YBH PRINCESS PROGRAM” to enhance their gratitude to Hashem each day in bentching in addition to emphasizing the importance of seder v’nikayon. Each class has begun to accumu-late “gems” for their “crowns” as they clean up and organize their tables after lunch. We can’t wait to “star” the certificates on the designat-ed bulletin board in the lunchroom of those students who excel in their bentching. Stay tuned for details as preparations are underway for our middle school Yom Iyun, which will take place during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. We will have the privilege of a visit from Rab-bi Glasser, as well as a hands on activity to demonstrate how to apply the words of inspiration as we prepare for Yom Kippur. Together with our wonderful and dedicat-ed morohs, who invest tre-mendous efforts and kochos in conjunction with the many programs which will be implemented this year, we will help our girls bring their dreams and goals for the new year to fruition and continue to “grow” in their avodas Hashem. I look for-ward to a year of success by partnering with each one of you to shep nachas from each girl. Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 973.777.0735, ext. 316, if you have any questions or concerns. Please remember that nothing is too small or insignificant when it comes to the success of our girls. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos and a K’siva V’chasima Tova! A Peek Into Our Week Ms. Baum’s Third Grade Class: Cursive writing was introduced in 3G & the girls had fun demonstrating with their bodies how manuscript letters are straight and cursive are slanted. When Ms. Baum called out cursive, the girls bent their bodies. When Ms. Baum called out manuscript, the girls stood up straight. Then they received “sentence strips” to write their names in cursive as they think they should and decorated them with markers. We are saving them for the last day of school so the girls can see how different their names will look before and after learning the letters. Of course, by that time we will be expert cursive writers. We are looking forward to learning the cursive alphabet in the coming months. Morah Bechofer’s Kitah Beis: We had a great first week in Kitah Beis! Each and every girl has been arriving to class each day with a smile and eager to learn. In Chumash, we started learning parshas Noach and we discussed who Noach was and why the world had to be destroyed. We can’t wait to learn about the mabul and build our very own teivah! Morah also introduced our “scoops of shorashim” unit and we look forward to enjoying yummy ice cream as a reward for mastering many shorashim! Morah Aron’s Kitah Gimmel: We are off to a strong year of learning and growing. In parshas Chayei Sara, the girls are working on their skills to decoding words to their shorashim and translating the pesukim with our increasing comprehension skills. After discussing our own status as citizens or strangers, Hennie Fass asked, "how could Avraham have been a citizen and a stranger in the same land?' Many girls offered excellent answers. Yomim Noraim preparations are under way as we reflect on events in our lives of the past year and compiled a list of tefilos for this coming year. We wish everyone a Kesivah VeChasima Tova!

Mrs. Aisenman’s Fourth Grade Class: Fourth grade is off to a great start! The girls were excited to see each other and are ready to start the year. We started our first day with some “getting to know you” activities including an All About Me project, which is beautifully displayed in our classroom. As a class, we created a list of classroom rules and each girl has signed the chart indicating that she will follow these rules. The girls have also completed their own personal information page to help me get to know them better (their favorite subject, etc.). They have also provided me with information on reading and math, which will help me better understand their past experiences with these subjects and their goals for this year. Over the next couple of weeks we will be working on assessments in both math and reading to gauge what each child will need to succeed. This year we will be using the Reading Street program again and we are introducing Go Math, which had been introduced last year to several of the younger grades. After the holidays, we will also be starting our writing program. The girls will be writing different genres including realistic fiction, persuasive essays etc. and we will be working on story development. Even after just a couple of short weeks, it’s quite apparent that a great deal of learning will take place in fourth grade and we are all looking forward to a great year.

ECD HIGHLIGHTS Rosh Hashana brings with it a lot of scientific opportunities in Morah Nikki’s Pre-1A class. We enjoyed cutting up and examining apples. We observed the different colors of the apples, as well as the colors of the flesh, seeds and stem.

Then we got to taste the yummy apples. We listened to the crunch of the apples when we cut or bit them. We also got to feel the different parts of the apple: smooth, sticky, wet

and hard. We also enjoyed watching what happened to the cut up apples with and without a spritz of lemon juice.

To top it off, some of us really enjoyed eating the lemony apples!

Shana Tova from all the preschool children!
