DEADLINE FOR AUGUST ISSUE - 15TH JULY

In theory, this is the mid summer issue of Peebles Life. A month where those with school aged children get to take a break from the daily routine of picking up and dropping off and where others get to enjoy the lighter evenings, indulging in their sport of choice or simply relaxing in the garden in the balmy temperatures. As I write this, I can only hope that summer picks up from its less than promising start!

Our Peebles Portrait this month, Jock Thomson, is certainly one who takes advantage of the brighter days and if you’ve ever wondered who has brought the splash of colour to the main road from Edinburgh, then this is where you can find out more about him. Elsewhere in the magazine, Riding for Disabled are on the hunt for volunteers willing to help out with their horses and we have a report from Dawyck Botanic Garden on their new hydro-electric scheme. As always in July, (have you all gone on holiday already?), Out & About is slimmer than in other months, however the Scottish Country Dancing Group do have a summer programme running which is open to all.

In regular features, the Big Issue takes a look at how to deal with those nuisance callers who are sure to ring just as you’ve settled into your favourite garden chair, perhaps with a copy of the intriguing new book by local author, Peter Sellar. Our political page comes from Councillor Graham Garvie with his take on the current political situation and, as usual, the Community Centre lets us know what they are up to over the summer.

I’d like to end by going back to our Portrait. Jock was suggested by someone who commented that there is a lot of admiration for the “recycled teenager” who “tidies pathways, plants seeds, clears water traps, edges paths, clears weeds, etc”. If you know of someone local who deserves a little bit of recognition, then please do get in touch. They don’t need to know who put their name forward and it’s always lovely to introduce someone who goes just that little bit further for our community.

It’s happened to us all. Just at that most awkward moment, (tea has been put on the table, you’ve stepped into the bath), the phone rings and, because we’re trained not to ignore its insistent call, we drop everything, pick up the receiver to hear those awful words “I’m delighted to tell you that you qualify for a new boiler, have a PPI claim, can sue for personal injury…..”. In the worst cases, it’s not even a human on the other end of the line but a recorded message, thrilling you with the news that you can have a free energy assessment or new windows. Cold calling is surely one of the banes of modern life and, whilst most of us simply hang up, there are those who are taken in by the scammers claiming to be from Microsoft and the like and end up handing over credit card or bank details, only to see their hard earned cash vanishing into thin air.

So what can we do to avoid or deal with these nuisance calls. Ofcom offers the following pointers:

1 Speak to your phone provider about the blocking

services they offer which may, for example, include blocking withheld numbers, international calls or a selected list of numbers.

2 Register with the Telephone Preference Service (0845

070 0707), a free service which is designed to stop unsolicited telemarketing calls. It cannot, however, block calls from companies to whom you have previously given your number nor does it have any authority over international businesses.

3 Look carefully at marketing opt-in or opt-out boxes and

make sure you do not agree to the company contacting you or passing your details on to others.

4 Consider going ex-directory.

5 Think about screening your calls through the use

of Caller ID (though beware that some providers charge for this).

6 If you receive a nuisance call, ask for the caller’s

details. They are obliged to give you the organisation’s name, address and phone number which can then allow you to notify them that you no longer wish to receive sales calls.

7 Never give out your personal details. Avoid

answering the phone by giving your telephone number and name and if someone asks for financial information, don’t provide it. Instead, hang up, wait five minutes to ensure the line is clear and then call the number provided on your account statement or the company website to check the call was genuine.

8 Make a complaint. Complaining to the relevant

regulator helps them take targeted action against these companies, stopping them ringing other, potentially more vulnerable, people.

This is obviously the official and most sensible advice, however

even Ofcom admits that this can’t eradicate all unsolicited or malicious calls. A trawl online suggests that there are other, more creative, alternatives to the hang up method. A particularly popular treatment appears to be asking the caller to hold, putting the phone down on the table and waiting to see how long it takes for them to hang up, although the person who answered the phone “Deaf School” and then kept asking the caller to repeat themselves was pretty inventive. Asking the double glazing salesperson how to build a conservatory on a fourth floor flat resulted in a quick end to that call as did the lady who told the caller her husband couldn’t come to the phone as he had misbehaved and was currently sitting on the naughty step!

Perhaps though, we should consider treating some of the cold calls with a little tolerance. After all, many of the people on the other end of the phone are simply carrying out a job to make ends meet, just like us, and it must be pretty soul destroying to constantly be hung up on or sworn at. The scammers are one thing but those offering products like energy assessments or double glazing are really just an irritation and, you never know, maybe one of the products they are promoting is the very thing you need.

This month I am going to look at the notion of peak performance as a tool to help you choose plants to create impact in the garden. This idea depends on thinking about which season is the most important one to you.

After a long winter many people long for spring; most trees that flower in spring also provide autumn colour. Everybody wants something to look at during the winter and all of us would like some colour in the summer. So how do we work that out, especially in a small garden?

If you really like the spring for instance, concentrate the planting so you have an effective plan for colour and interest from January to early June (40% of the total planting). That would automatically imply some autumn colour (say about 20%) but you might add to that. You might also add good winter interest that would overlap some of the spring planting (another 20%) and that would leave about 20% for the summer period.

In terms of plants that would mean a good selection of

small conifers and broadleaf evergreens, some of which flower from April to June, plus winter-flowering deciduous shrubs and lots of bulbs to flower from January to June (like snowdrops, narcissi, camassia, lilies and alliums). There would be room for one or two larger shrubs for autumn colour alone; for instance, Japanese maples or euonymus alatus.

Summer colour (only 20%) could be provided by climbers like roses, clematis and honeysuckle with a few long-flowering herbaceous perennials (like alstroemeria, anthemis, aster frikartii, hemerocallis, lychnis coronaria, nepeta, penstemon and verbena bonariensis).

If you want a peak in the summer you might plan for about 60% winter interest, choosing broadleaf evergreens that flower in the summer like escallonia and use most of the remaining 40% to plan good summer colour. A vine like parthenocissus could supply a flash of autumn colour without taking up too much room on the ground.

Thinking about peak performance doesn’t mean that there will be times where nothing is happening; but anticipation is part of the joy of the garden. Instead, you will manage the garden to provide a climax of colour just at the time when you most want it.

To achieve the best result look for plants that have more than one season of interest: that is, they flower in the spring and there are coloured leaves and fruits in the autumn or they are evergreen but flower in late spring or summer.

Use bulbs wherever you can because they give huge results for very little effort. There are bulbs for every situation: some for naturalising to add interest to difficult slopes or in the bare spaces under large shrubs or trees and some for inclusion in the borders. The middle ranks of the planting are a useful space for bulb planting because the messy foliage will be overtaken by summer perennials as they come into bloom later.

The hydro-electric scheme at Dawyck Botanic Garden at Stobo, near Peebles has generated enough electricity to power seven family homes during its first year.

Dawyck, which is the first carbon neutral botanic garden in the UK, now plans to increase its power generation as it moves into its second year.

Since it began operating on 19 May 2014, the hydro system has generated 35,000 kWh of electricity which is around 100 kWh per day. The average Scottish home uses around 14 KWh per day.

The scheme, which benefited from a £30,000 grant from EDF Energy’s Green Fund, provides enough electricity to power both the Garden’s Visitor Centre and the year-round maintenance of the Garden’s infrastructure. Heating for the Visitor Centre, which was built in 2008, is already provided by a sustainable biomass boiler. Surplus electricity is being sold back to the National Grid at times of low demand through the feed in tariff, creating a welcome new income source for Dawyck.

The power generated so far has saved the Garden around £3,500 and the carbon equivalent reduction saving to the environment is in excess of 20 tonnes.

Garden Curator Graham Stewart said: “Dawyck Botanic Garden’s decision to invest in hydro-electric technology has been proven to be environmentally sound and has added significantly to the Garden’s portfolio of green initiatives. Our modern recreation of a former Victorian hydro-electric scheme has led to Dawyck achieving a carbon-neutral status, the only Botanic Garden in the UK to have this accolade. Over the coming year we intend to make some further modifications to increase

the amount of power produced at the turbine.’’

Dawyck House, which along with the Garden, once formed the grand Dawyck Estate, was one of the first houses in Scotland to have its own hydro electricity supply. That was in service during the late 19th to early 20th century. The system was powered from the Scrape Burn, a tributary of the River Tweed, which runs through the Garden, close to the house. The new hydro-electric system is powered from the same burn.

By the time RBGE acquired the Garden in 1978, the Victorian system had long since been replaced by a supply from the National Grid and the remaining infrastructure had become a dysfunctional eyesore and was duly removed. However, the existence of the historical Victorian system was such a strong indicator that electricity could once again be generated using the Scrape Burn to provide enough power for the site, and a comprehensive feasibility study confirmed that it was possible. The modern scheme, which was designed and implemented by

small-scale hydro developer, babyHydro, is now fully functional and is expected to provide a supply of up to 11kW.

Dawyck Botanic Garden, which boasts 5-star Quality Assurance from VisitScotland, is one of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s three regional sites and welcomes approximately 30,000 visitors a year.

The Garden is home to one of Scotland’s finest tree collections including some of Britain’s oldest and tallest trees. The 65-acre Garden offers woodland and burnside walks and is renowned for its seasonal displays of snowdrops, bluebells, rhododendrons, azaleas, Himalayan poppies and autumn colour.

Dawyck Botanic Garden is part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), a leading international research organisation delivering knowledge, education and plant conservation action in more than 80 countries around the world. In Scotland its four Gardens at Edinburgh, Benmore, Dawyck and Logan attract nearly a million visitors each year.

The last meeting of the spring / summer session was held on Wednesday, 10 June, when we welcomed Eva Bisset as our very Special Guest. Eva had been eagerly anticipated and she did not disappoint with her rendition of poems and stories in broad Scots. Eva delighted us and made us laugh with her performance, with many of the members commenting that she had been such a tonic and “do you think she could come back every couple of months?”! There can be no better an accolade than that! I would like to thank Eva for a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment, which was enjoyed by all present.

We were also delighted to welcome Donald Swanson who came in to show us his recently

received BEM.

We are now looking forward to our day trip to North Berwick on Wednesday, 15 July 2015. The bus will leave the Eastgate (aka Station) Car Park at 10am and will drop us off in North Berwick at the Scottish Seabird Centre and this is where we will be collected from for our return to Peebles. Please be back at the bus between 3pm – 3:15pm in order to give me a chance to check that everyone is on the bus and that we leave no one behind. Please let me know as soon as possible if you have booked a seat on the bus to North Berwick and are unable to come and also if there are any very late call offs on the day, please call me on my mobile (both numbers below).

We now have 60 members attending the Afternoon Tea for members at the Green Tree Hotel on Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Tickets are still available at the subsidised price of £1 per member for a lovely relaxed afternoon with sandwiches, cakes and tea and coffee and a chance for a blether. Any member who would like to buy a ticket can do so by contacting the Secretary before the end of July 2015.

Peter Sellar, from Cardrona, has written a hybrid fiction/non-fiction book about his father, Bill Sellar, currently a resident in Peebles nursing home. While the core subject of the book is Alzheimers disease – never the lightest of topics to tackle - the book is narrated from Bill’s point of view as he sits in the nursing home’s lounge overlooking Tweed Green. To beat Alzheimers, and during one of his lucid moments, William decides to commit his memories to paper so that the disease does not take everything away from him. And so, using flashbacks, we read all about his uncle in the trenches of the First World War, his father in the Malayan

jungles, his own adventures out to Aden just after the war, and to the United States and Singapore in the 50s before finding love in the 60s. All the flashbacks are based on word-for-word transcriptions of the various letters, telegrammes, diary entries, newspaper articles, etc., sent home to Speyside. The documents speak for themselves and are an objectively fascinating reminder of a different way of life during the years of the crumbling British Empire. The book also narrates Bill’s descent into Alzheimers and the ravages that he and his family have had to endure for last 5 years. The book is an easy read, an emotional one, with moments

of light and dark intermingled. It is available for £3.32 on Kindle (“Who the Hell Are You?” By Peter Kynoch Sellar) and at Whities in Peebles for £5. All proceeds will go to Alzheimers Scotland.

‘Inspiring Life’ is an exhibition of the art, photography, and dance by 21 year old Evie Douglas whose life tragically ended in suicide. In her short life Evie was passionate about art and all things creative.

The exhibition celebrates Evie’s talent, and her sheer love of life. She was inspired by life, by light, by the joy she found in her surroundings, and in her extraordinary take of ordinary things as shown in her photography and paintings.

The exhibition is on from Thursday 2nd to Friday 17th July at the Eastgate’s Anne Younger studio. The studio is used for a variety of different daytime events. If you are making a special trip, please telephone 01721 72577 to make sure the exhibition is open.

All local clubs have had a busy and successful season of SCD.

As usual we will be keeping our hands (or feet) in during the summer with three evenings of dance to recorded music. We will do mainly straightforward dances which will be ‘called’ and if necessary ‘walked through’. They are a good opportunity for new or inexperienced dancers to have few ‘taster sessions’ to see if they enjoy dancing - or just come along and

have some fun. No special shoes are needed

Regular club nights resume later in September - but more about that nearer the time.

Summer dances are in the St Joseph’s Neighbourhood Centre, Wemyss Place Peebles

Wednesday evenings 7.30-9.30 - on 1st July, 15th July and 12th AugustCost - inc tea and biscuits - £2

There’s a bright and breezy feel to this summer’s Eastgate Theatre programme announced this week – with music, dance and drama arriving from the far corners of the world; and home-grown activities spilling out of the theatre into the open air.

International visitors include a clutch of American bands with intriguing names: Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys, Betty and the Boy, as well as Sheesham and Lotus & Son – who made such an impression with their brilliant music and weird and wonderful instruments last year. As well as fiddles and banjos this band will introduce the contrabass harmoniphonium and the mono-phone acoustical filter.

Canada provides the setting for Stellar Quines’ production of The Deliverance, which completes the powerful trilogy of plays by Jennifer Tremblay that began with The List and The Carousel. Starring Maureen Beattie in the role of the woman The Deliverance sees her struggling to fulfil her dying mother’s wish to see the

son torn from her at a young age. She goes in search of the boy, will her journey end in redemption? This will be the first chance to see the new play before it goes up to Edinburgh for the Festival Fringe. From a new play to the revival of a multi award-winning classic. Mull Theatre presents the hilarious, delightful Stones in his Pockets. An Irish community in County Kerry is invaded by Hollywood and the contrast between the film-makers romanticised view of Ireland and the reality of daily life couldn’t be sharper.

Meanwhile, Mutxiko Elkartea, a colourful troupe of musicians and dancers from Hendaye in France are Stepping Out, Basque Style at the heart of the Peebles Arts Festival. Three other Arts Festival events at the Eastgate are the Music in Peebles concert by the phenomenal pianist Young-Choon Park playing music by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert and an evening talk by Lord Smith of Kelvin presented by Tweeddale Society. Shakespeare at Traquair

celebrates its 20th birthday by presenting Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

Closer to home, three screenings from the National Theatre include the live transmission of Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) in Everyman which has been rewritten by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. The new season of screenings from Covent Garden takes in five ballets (including Romeo and Juliet and Frankenstein) and five operas (including Boris Gudunov and Le Nozze di Figaro).

The Eastgate also has a great mix of energetic and exciting activities to keep youngsters and adults occupied during the summer holidays with Engage courses ranging from painting and dancing, to free running and kite flying, both indoors and out (weather permitting!).

Summer season brochures are available from the Eastgate Theatre. Put this link http://issuu.com/eastgatearts/docs/eastgate_summer_2015 into your browser to check it out online or have a look at www.eastgatearts.com

Whilst the name of this month’s Portrait may not be familiar to everyone, his handiwork certainly is, even if they don’t know it, but more of that later. Born in Peebles in the late thirties, Jock Thomson has not only spent his entire life in the town but, barring about four years, has lived on the same street from birth. With his father working for James Clyde Builders and his mother at the dairy at Temple Bar, Jock grew up with his six brothers and two sisters. As was the norm at the time, his school career began at Halyrude where, in his early days, he regularly used to head for home on hearing the first bell at 10am (with the janitor being sent to fetch him back) before the school learnt to shut the gate. He moved on to Kingsland and the High School, of which he freely admits he was not a fan, preferring to head out into the countryside to help with the bees, poach the rabbits and generally watch nature as well as mucking about with his friends.

On leaving school at 15, Jock took a job at the Tweed Mill where he stayed for twenty years, working across the business from the yarn store to the weaving shed to the dye house, in his own words, “they really put me through the mill”. An opportunity then arose to work with his brother in the roofing industry before he moved on to work with Wimpey Homes building houses across the area. During this time he had also met and married his wife, Maisie, and the couple had had their three daughters, Joyce, Wilma and Lorna who all still live in Peebles, along with their children and, indeed,

grandchildren. In his spare time, Jock helped his cousin, Jim Bogle, with his beehives and still looks after eight hives locally, which he inherited from Jim. He is also a Life Member of Peebles Callants Club which, amongst their work, helps maintain paths and benches in the town although Jock remarks that the trees he planted on the golf course in the early days of his membership are probably now long gone.

It is possibly from this that we come to the reason Jock has been suggested as a Portrait. During his younger years, Jock regularly walked the Crossings, enjoying being able to walk side by side, having a blether, on the path along the main road into Peebles. However he became aware that gradually the path was becoming more and more overgrown and so took it on himself to cut back the creeping grass, uncovering the tar and making the path more walkable. He has also planted daffodils and tulips along the way, as well as nasturtium seeds and Star of Bethlehem, both of which are beginning to make their presence felt. As he puts it, it wasn’t really a big job, he just went up there every day, did a wee bit and then went home when he got fed up. He still regularly clears out the run offs with his walking stick.

Turning to Peebles, Jock remarks that he has never seen it as dirty as it is now and finds it sad that SBC don’t have the manpower to keep it as it once was. He loves the scenery and countryside and has walked most of the town and surrounding area over the years, although now he drives to

the Meldons to watch the racing pigeons being released. He is saddened by the loss of many of the independent food shops on the High Street, harking back to the days when there were four or five butchers in Peebles, but believes that the increase in traffic on the roads could be a good sign of people visiting the town. In terms of traffic, he also has concerns over the possibility of a new bridge over the Cuddy at Dalatho, believing that the nursery and school make this a risky proposal.

On the subject of whom he admires, Jock’s first answer is the surgeons who have replaced both his knees and his hips, turning him into the bionic man, however he goes on to talk about both Jim Bogle and Wattie Brodie for their sheer knowledge of beekeeping. Jim won the National Honey Championship several times and Jock remarks that his ability with both honey and wax was incredible. Jock himself is the current holder of the John Stoakley Trophy for honey, so clearly something has rubbed off.

As ever, we finish by looking at the Portrait’s secrets. Jock points out that he doesn’t know what people don’t know about him but he did once win the competition for tossing a 56lb weight over the bar at the Peebles Highland Games. We think that a lot of people don’t know that it is him we should be grateful to for making at least one entrance to the town more beautiful and accessible than it would otherwise be.

Summer Bodies How many of you over the past few weeks have put on something you wore last summer only to find it has shrunk and feels much more snug than it did last year? Or perhaps you are clinging onto your baggy winter clothes (good job the weather has not been too great so far) because you feel more comfortable in them. Your summer holiday may only be a few weeks away and you want to feel your best and enjoy yourself, not that I am suggesting for one minute that you need to be thin to be happy, but how you feel about yourself is very important and if you feel fit and happy you feel better about yourself in general. But by taking a few easy steps you could be feeling fabulous and confident about yourself in no time.

5 simple steps to feel fabulous

1. Hydrate, drink plenty of water you will function better and your skin will thank

you for it.

2. Get outside grab some fresh air walk, run, cycle, the list is endless.

3. Challenge yourself to try something new that you enjoy.

4. Eat plenty of veg and fruit instead of stodgy carbohydrates with can make you feel bloated and sluggish.

5. Treat yourself to a new hairstyle, manicure, massage, go clothes shopping with a friend

and buy something that makes you feel good

So get moving, eat well, do things you enjoy that make you feel happy and you will be ready for the sunshine when it arrives.

POLITICAL PAGEGraham Garvie (Councillor)Tweeddale East 34 Kirkland Street, Peebles EH45 8EUTelephone 01721 721010Email [email protected] that was quite a General Election—and didn’t the people speak loudly and clearly! “Westminster--get your act together! “

An historic result for Scotland which resulted in many fresh faces being returned to the UK Parliament—and the sad loss of many well- known and experienced Liberal giants some of whom are my friends.

Politics can be such a cruel business and political tsunamis such as we just experienced in Scotland can have the effect of sweeping away the good as well as not so good. But there are now many new and young faces elected to do their best for Scotland and the UK—and I am sure that they will.

These are interesting times—and the Chinese have a saying that the greatest curse is to say to someone “May you live in interesting times”. However, I tend to disagree with that. Interesting times provide opportunities for radical change.

In the coming months and years we have a unique opportunity to re-shape our Nation—both Scotland and the United Kingdom-- for the betterment both of ourselves and, more importantly, of future generations.

What seems absolutely clear is that very early attention must now be paid to the following constitutional issues as national priorities:-

• Replace the totally unfair and unrepresentative “First past the post” electoral system for the House of Commons by a fairer system of proportional

representation

• Production of a modern written Constitution for the UK which would produce a federal system with parliaments or assemblies for its constituent parts—Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and, crucially, England (or the regions of England)

• Replace the House of Lords by an elected and accountable Senate with a very much reduced number of Members

• Reduce the membership of the Commons from the present 650 to 500 (300 if there was a Federal system in place)

• Replace the present crumbling and in need of serious repair Westminster Parliament buildings with purpose-built semi-circular, non-confrontational chambers on a new site for the Commons and the new Senate

• The subsequent conversion of the present Westminster Parliamentary buildings into a national museum/tourist attraction or such like

And such essential modernisation of our system of governance of these Islands would facilitate the tackling of the enormous issues of our time in this global age—inequality, poverty, social housing, climate change.

For Liberals like me, these territories are at the very heart of what we hold dear—about curbing arbitrary and excess power; about looking after our precious planet;

about promoting business but backing the public interest against overtly sectional and selfish interests; about promoting the eternal hope of belief in young people and the value we Scots have traditionally placed on the importance of education.

Liberalism fundamentally is a philosophy of optimism and of positive balance. We are on the side of localism and of the common good of all of the people—or as the late Liberal Peer Lord Russell Johnston profoundly put it “That man might have life and have it abundantly”.

Historically, it has been shown again and again that unbridled political ”isms” of whatever creed require tempering and balancing in the interests of the common good—and the present time is no exception.

Despite several significant achievements in government, the Liberal Democrats have taken one heck of a battering at several elections since ”in the national interest” we went into coalition with the Tories in 2010. Looking forward and in fairness (and the British public have thankfully always displayed that quality) that imbalanced situation will hopefully change starting with the elections to the Scottish Parliament in May 2016 and then the Council elections in May 2017.

On any of these thoughts or on any local Council matters, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. I would be very pleased to hear from you.

To be or not to be?Peebles Life had its annual trip to Shakespeare at Traquair on Thursday the 28th May, it is always one of our favourite evenings out of the year, and though the weather was a little challenging, with a downpour during the second scene, and a cold wind blowing throughout the quality of the production, and the excellent performances

of all the cast made it a great evening out.

Traquair made a particularly fitting backdrop for Hamlet, and good use was made of the house throughout, bringing it more into the performance than in some previous years. I think it is fair to say this year’s offering could be considered a triumph, and we are already looking

forward to next year.

Shakespeare at Traquair will be showing an exhibition of costumes, props, photographs and videos from their productions to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The exhibition will run at the Eastgate Theatre from the 21st September until 12th October.

For further information see the Shakespeare at Traquair website. www.shakespeare-at-traquair.co.uk
