The original Hiker's sets used a #49 dual grid radio tube. This was not a screen grid tube or a tetrode in theusual sense. Both grids were equal with one wound inside the other. Experimenters started building smallradios with extremely low plate voltage using the tubes in the space charge mode.

Radio Building Projects"Fox Hole Radio Set"

This is the famous "Fox Hole Radio" that our Troops built out in the field during WW II. They borrowedparts and wire from any source they could find. They used the radio to stay in touch with the outside world.It's a very simple set to build and can offer surprising results! As with all crystal radios, it's important tohave a good antenna & ground system.
