DEADLINE FOR NOVEMBER ISSUE - 15TH OCTOBER

In a strange coincidence D-day for the October magazine has landed on the same day as D-day for Scotland. At long last, the votes will be cast and this time tomorrow (I get up early!) we will know whether Scotland has chosen to go it alone or stay as it is. By the time you read this, we’ll have been dealing with the aftermath, hopefully working together to ensure the strongest future for our country and, in this spirit of positivity, the Big Issue takes a look at the recent changes on Peebles High Street.

If, nationally, we are looking to the future, then the Peebles Portrait this month is clearly going to provide a trip down memory lane for longer term residents in Peebles. Contributed by, and at the suggestion of, Bob Harrison, we feature Steve Baczkowski, former proprietor of The Coffee Pot, and, judging by comments we’ve seen online, an awful lot of you are going to be reminiscing about chip butties and an incredible array of sweets tonight! In another change to one of our regular features, we have chosen to avoid politicians this month in our Political Page as they’ve had plenty of airtime recently, turning instead to Peebles Community Council who bring us up to date with their concerns for Peebles moving forward and let us know how we can get involved.

It’s not all change though and, as ever, we have reports from the rugby and cricket clubs, Peebles Garden and the Community Centre as well as our regular recipe – will Val ever run out of new ideas for us to try in the kitchen? Out & About also appears as usual and includes details of a Halloween Ghost Walk in aid of the Alec Lucas Memorial Fund which sounds most intriguing, information on a new venture from the Old Parish Church and the programme for the new season of Serenata concerts. We are also delighted to support the huge number of charity events that take place locally which, this month, include the Borders Children’s Charity benefiting from a fashion show staged by local business, Bustle, Changing Faces benefiting from funds raised through Inchorus and an insight into the new dedicated bookshop opened by Sense Scotland at the end of the High Street.

The deadline for the November edition of Peebles Life will be Wednesday 15th October so if you have anything you would like to let us know about, please do get in touch by then. We are happy to include events you are staging in our online local calendar at www.peebleslife.com and if we can help you reach the local community then we would be pleased to do so.

Big Issue For some years now, a regular refrain in these pages, those of the Peeblesshire News, online and in general conversations around town has been the number of empty shops and the general quietness of the shopping areas in town. Several independent shops have come and gone, premises have sat empty for months or even years and a plethora of suggestions, ideas and plans have been put forward to encourage a stable, popular and profitable centrepiece for Peebles. Finally there seems to be a feeling that, at last, the corner has been turned and, quietly, the town has once again become a place to be.

As it stands right now, only two premises lie empty on the High Street, Old Town and Northgate and, indeed, plans are currently with Scottish Borders Council for establishing a business in one of these, the building at Veitch’s Corner. Naturally there are concerns as to whether yet another eating venue is the best use of this location, particularly as two other new venues are still settling in at the Cross Keys and Mercat View. However surely it is good to have life breathed back into a space that has been left alone for far too long, particularly when it sits in such a prominent position and therefore impacts on the overall

impression visitors take away from our town?

Throughout Summer 2014, there has been a genuine busyness in Peebles and a real sense of positivity. The sheer volume of both pedestrians and traffic along the main shopping streets has meant that Peebles has felt like a bustling, vibrant place and there can be no doubt that visitors enjoy feeling part of that. Tour buses which seemed to have been missing for a few years now are apparent in the Edinburgh Road Car Park and over the bridge in Kingsmeadows with their passengers spending money in our gift shops and restaurants. Add in the ever-increasing number of cyclists to the buzz and this points to, perhaps, part of the reason the corner has been turned.

Whilst Peebles has always offered something different for a visitor in our eclectic mix of independent shops and our award-winning restaurants as well as the picturesque scenery, more recently it seems that every weekend there is something different to attract people to the area, whether it be the cycling festivals such as Tweedlove or the Tour o the Borders, the Arts Festival, Beltane, the Agricultural Show or the Highland Games. Even looking forward, there is the Wood Festival to draw the tourist season on into

the Autumn. Some of these events have histories stretching back beyond living memory, drawing in visitors for many years, adapting but retaining the same sense of tradition. But it is also beneficial that new events are created, attracting a different type of tourist to town and leaving them with a fond impression of Peebles as being a friendly, pleasant place to visit. After all, Peebles for Pleasure is the town slogan!

It is lovely to be able to recognise and comment on a positive story as, so often, the Big Issue seems to be about changes we would like to see in town or problems that we would like addressed. However it is also easy to become complacent and rest on our laurels, to assume that the visitors in 2014 will spread the word and encourage new visitors in 2015. If we agree that part of the popularity of Peebles to day trippers and longer visitors is the events that go on in the town then, as a community, we need to get behind the organisers of all of these events and offer our support to enable them to encourage the visitors of the future and ensure the ongoing vibrancy and profitability of our town centre.

Make sure you don’t miss out on the next fundraising event for The Alec Lucas Memorial Fund. Our very own Halloween Ghost Walk and Dinner.

Saturday, 1st November at 6.30 pm at the Masonic Hall, Northgate, Peebles.

Bring your own drink (alcoholic or otherwise). Tickets £15 in advance from Susan Lucas (07727 159 323).

Join our leaders together with a few “scary” witches on Saturday, 1st November 2014 for an entertaining Ghost Walk around some of the “haunts” of Peebles. This is followed

by a three course dinner at the Masonic Hall, Northgate, Peebles.

The Ghost Walk will be informative, fun and hopefully not too scary! Learn all about some of the hidden secrets of Peebles and be prepared for the unexpected!! To calm you down from the excitement of the Ghost Walk, we will then arrive at the Masonic Hall where a beautifully prepared three course dinner will be brewing for you, and a coven of the town’s most beautiful witches will be waiting to trick or treat you or even serve you!

Wear whatever you like, but

perhaps Halloween dress would be the most appropriate – you decide. A great evening catching up with fellow witches, demons, etc. as well as having an exciting and scary experience. Fly in at 6.30 pm (you mustn’t be late) and then fly away at 9.30 pm.

Tickets must be purchased in advance - £15 from Witchy woo Sue on 07727 159 323. There’s plenty of parking for Broomsticks!

Whether you are looking for a light relaxing read or something heavier to challenge and stimulate your brain, the recently opened Sense Scotland’s charity bookshop (Chapter and Verse) at the end of Peebles High Street is the place to visit.

Nestling snuggly on the street corner, this recently opened bookshop offers a wide range of books to suit all ages and tastes. Staffed by enthusiastic and friendly volunteers who have a passion for books and a commitment to the invaluable work done by Sense with deafblind people, this bookshop offers a welcoming place to browse hundreds of fiction and non-fiction books at leisure. The shelves are filled with second-hand books in excellent condition at a fraction of the retail price – many of the paperbacks on offer are priced at an incredible 50 pence while the starting price of hardbacks is as low as a mere one pound.

There is a separate room filled with children’s books where you can find colourful hardboard books for babies and toddlers as well as lavishly illustrated story books for grown-ups to read aloud; separate shelves are stocked with books for older children and teenagers.

In addition to books, the shop contains a music and media section where DVDs, Audio books, LPs and cassettes all jostle for space. With prices that start at one pound for old LPs and for Audio books, there are many bargains just waiting to be picked up here. For anyone looking for children’s videos, prices are irresistible – five for one pound!

Profit from the shop goes to Sense Scotland, a charity which works with deafblind and disabled children and adults throughout Scotland. As well as raising awareness, the charity provides practical support in the form of respite care and supported living projects. Sense has successfully supported thousands of disabled people and their families in projects and services throughout Scotland since its foundation.

This means that every book you buy can help Sense Scotland to offer help to even more people.

To encourage you to visit and browse, Sense volunteers are holding a drop in coffee and chat

in the bookshop on Saturday, 18th October: 11.00 – 13.00. Come and see what’s on offer, enjoy a coffee and find out more about Sense’s work. Or just come for a chat!

And if you fancy volunteering, volunteers are always needed in both the bookshop and the main Sense Scotland shop in the middle of Peebles High Street. Whichever shop you are interested in, come in and pick up a form and you’ll be given a warm welcome. Alternatively, contact Lorna on 01721 723 349 for more information.

For those who would like to donate books, donations can be left either at Chapter and Verse or at the Sense Scotland shop at 31-33 High Street, Peebles.

Gavin Mathison started his business at 17, in May 2004, cutting grass and carrying out basic garden maintenance. At that time there were only 4 businesses in Peebles offering gardening and landscaping services. In the next couple of years Gavin progressed more towards landscaping, gaining valuable skills and experience. Since the young entrepreneur started his business he has seen businesses start and fail in the area, but now he has a strong reputation, offering a quality and reliable service at a fair price.

Gavin has always believed in continual investment into

the business and himself. GM Land Solutions now have a comprehensive range of equipment and fully accredited operators which most competitors cannot offer. This means he can offer all advertised services in house, avoiding the need to rely on third parties to assist. Gavin can then retain full project management of what’s happening and make sure the standard is high throughout the project and the costs are tightly managed.

Celebrating 10 years in business, Gavin has just invested in additional plant including a 7.5 ton digger and

more forestry equipment for tree surgery and woodland work, including a winch and trailer for his tractor.

There is a new facebook page and website set up now too, please have a look at these to see examples of recent projects. Don’t forget to like us on facebook!

Whether you require something simple like a patio, a dangerous branch removed, or a more comprehensive landscaping project or woodland clearance, please get in touch with Gavin Mathison on 07950 023813.

Over the past few weeks there have been many heated debates on the TV and all around the streets of Scotland. Every night red faced politicians fighting their corner getting more stressed by the minute, people shouting at each in the streets, even friends arguing with each other. By the time you are reading this, we will know how the Scottish nation voted, but it got me thinking how stressful it was to a lot of people. We all live stressful lives but stress can have a negative impact on our lives and our blood pressure. The trouble is you may not know that you have a problem with high blood pressure unless you get it checked. Basically it is the pressure of your blood in your arteries and you need a certain amount of pressure as your heart pumps your blood around your body. It does change throughout the day it lowers as you sleep, rises when your awake or when you are nervous, stressed or active. Problems arise when blood pressure is constantly higher than recommended, if not treated your heart can become

enlarged and less efficient which can increase your chance of a heart attack or stroke. Although some people do need medication to keep their blood pressure in check there are a few simple lifestyle changes you can make to maintain a healthy blood pressure.• Exercise - keeps your heart and lungs healthy,

keeps control of body weight, being over weight puts more stress on heart.

• Watch your salt and alcohol intake, try to eat as healthily as you can.

• Smoking - try to cut down / stop.• Age, race, and family history of HBP can

increase risk but you can’t change any of these.• Relax find some time for yourself, try not to

get drawn into arguments or stressful situations. If you are worried you may be at risk your doctor is the best place to go as they can check blood pressure easily for you.

Local Choir raises over £1000 for life-changing charity

As a result of InChorus’ continued fundraising, the choir was delighted to donate a cheque for £1,000 to Changing Faces, a small charity which supports and represents people who have conditions or injuries which affect their appearance.

The cheque was received by ten year old Angus Blacklock who has had much to do with the charity in his short life. Born with just one ear, a condition known as microtia, he has had many operations, and just recently had an ear constructed. Dad, Robin, spoke emotionally about the enormous support his family has received from Changing Faces.

As well as being involved in large charity events, InChorus also collects for charities nominated by choir members who have a particular one close to their hearts. In this case alto, Alison Wilkinson, who works with Robin Blacklock, and knew of the charity’s great work, nominated Changing Faces. The money was raised at all kinds of events in Peebles and Edinburgh.

Angus wanted to hear InChorus sing, and the choir, which had been totally enchanted by their young guest, was happy to oblige with some of their repertoire.

Assistant Musical Director, Aly Skidmore, said,

“It’s at times like this that we

remember what’s at the heart of InChorus – music, entertainment and supporting people. Changing Faces is a particularly meaningful charity to be involved with. To witness the way in which Angus and his family have benefited, spurs us on to keep entertaining and to keep helping.”

Aly concluded, “The star of the evening was, undoubtedly, young Angus. He delighted and inspired us all and we wish him well in the future.”

A Very Vintage AffairThe Bustle and friends Charity Vintage Fashion Show, sponsored by The Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, will be taking to the catwalk again this November in aid of The Borders Children’s Charity.

The evening promises to be packed with entertainment, glamour and style. Guests will be welcomed with reception drinks, and as well as fashion there will be live music and dance shows. The Biggar Big Band will be setting the scene with their repertoire of music from a bygone era. Dancers from The Fiona Henderson School of Dance will be performing on the catwalk at intervals, with dances such as The Charleston and Jive. Headcases Hair Studio, along with make-up artists, will

be transforming local mums, students, friends and customers of Bustle into sirens for the evening, to model the vast collection of vintage ball-gowns and party dresses by Bustle. And when the show is over, the function suite at The Macdonald Cardrona Hotel will be turned around for an after party with local band “The Taylor Brothers”.

Lynsay Munnis runs Bustle from her home in Cardrona, where she collects, restores and sells vintage dresses. “We had great fun putting on the show last October in Peebles, it went down well with the audience and we raised some money for The Borders Children’s Charity, such a worthwhile cause. All those involved in last year’s show were pleased to be involved again. This year we have a brand new collection, with plenty of sparkle for the party season, and all of the dresses in the show will be for sale immediately afterwards.”

All of the proceeds from ticket sales, along with raffle proceeds will be donated to The Borders Children’s Charity. The Macdonald Cardrona Hotel is sponsoring the event in support of the charity along with many other local people and businesses who are giving their expertise and time.

The Borders Children’s Charity has been providing financial assistance to children in desperate situations, throughout the Borders, for over 45 years.

The committee of volunteers meet monthly to assess the applications and allocate funding. The charity has virtually no overheads, so 99% of the money raised goes directly to the children. A spokesperson for The Borders Children’s Charity said, “With the number of applications rising every year, events like this are vital to maintain the help we can give children living in desperate situations, right here on our doorstep”.

On Friday 14th November at 7.30pm, this will be the perfect event to kick-start your festive season. Tickets for the event are £15 and can be purchased from The Moy Mackay Gallery, Northgate, Peebles. They can also be purchased by contacting Ann Wood on 01896 820263 or [email protected].

Anyone wishing to find out more about The Borders Children’s Charity can do so on www.borderschildrenscharity.org.uk.

Peebles Pensioners AssociationThe guest speaker at the first meeting of the autumn session was Elaine Thornton-Nicol, who is the Locality Manager for the Royal Voluntary Service in the Scottish Borders. We were treated to a comprehensive history of the RVS from its inception before the outbreak of the Second World War through its different names – and uniforms – to the support work during major incidents such as Lockerbie and to the work the volunteers do locally. Elaine was a very engaging speaker and I would like to thank her for giving us such an interesting talk, which was enjoyed by all present and it was very heartening to see so many of our members showing an interest in volunteering with the RVS as a result of her talk.

The next meeting of the autumn session will be held on Wednesday, 15 October 2014 at 2pm in Peebles

Rugby Club, Eastgate, Peebles. The Community Bus will operate as usual. Will members who require the Community Bus, please remember that you must phone the Secretary (telephone number below) by 1pm on Monday, 13 October 2014 and that collection will be from the pre-designated collection points only. The kitchen rota for this meeting is Fran Price, Margaret Morrison, Irene Howie and Doreen Motion.

Our Special Guest Speaker will be The Lord Smith of Kelvin, who was the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

We are holding a Table Sale in the Burgh Hall on Saturday, 11 October 2014 from 10am – 4pm. Entry is by silver collection. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available on the stage at the cost of £1 but for those with mobility difficulties, there will

be two tables in the hall beside the kitchen steps reserved for you.

I would like to thank all the wonderful people who have taken a table. We are very lucky to have so many talented people in the area who will be selling their new craft items such as hair clips, cards, jam, jewellery and hand knits and a table sale wouldn’t be complete without the eclectic mix of pre-owned household items, clothes, books, toys, bric-a-brac and collectables! So come along and have a look!

Peebles Pensioners will have our own table, which will be selling vintage tea sets, crystal glasses, handmade cards, books, plants, garden ornaments – and much more!

If you need any information, please contact Laura Scott (Secretary) 01721 723430.

The new Serenata season starts this autumn, with the first chamber music concert on 12th October.

SERENATA is a forum where local musicians and singers present a series of short chamber music and recital concerts, meeting monthly on Sunday afternoons in the Eastgate Studio.

SERENATA offers a performance platform for instrumentalists and singers, either solo or in ensemble in front of a sympathetic audience of fellow musicians and music lovers. It provides an opportunity to develop new musical

relationships for both practice and performance. Performers of any age are welcome to come along and play – it is fun to get together with a date to work for – to perform exam pieces before meeting the examiners – to run through a concert programme in an informal setting - and to meet up and play with like-minded musicians. All concerts start at 2.30 in the Eastgate Studio and entrance is by donation. The programmes are as eclectic as any you’ll find anywhere, the atmosphere is informal and friendly and of course you can make the occasion even more enjoyable with coffee and cake.

Dates for 2014/2015 are SundaysOctober 12thNovember 9thDecember 14thJanuary 18thFebruary 15thMarch 15thWe look forward to some fine concerts this season. But only if local musicians come forward offering to play! Please do get in touch if you would like to play or sing on one of the above dates.

Award-winning quartetto raise the curtainMusic in Peebles opens its new season on Friday 3 October with one of the most exciting young ensembles to emerge in recent years, the Gildas Quartet. Their enticing programme combines a mainstream masterpiece, a neglected gem and a work surely destined to be a modern classic.

The Musicians

The Gildas Quartet was founded in 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Among the quartet’s many achievements, they were winners of the prestigious Tunnell Trust Award for Young Musicians in 2012/13, which led to a Scottish tour. Since then, the quartet has performed widely across the UK and Europe, including at many festivals and at leading venues including Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room and on BBC Radio 3. The Times has referred to them as “... the gifted Gildas String Quartet”.

The Music

Familiar composers open and close the concert. First comes Mozart with one of his final set of three quartets, together known as the ‘Prussian’ quartets. The programme ends with Grieg and his

unduly neglected first (and only completed) quartet, a characteristically rich, lyrical work noted for the almost orchestral quality of its sound. In between is a piece likely to be less familiar, but no less rewarding, ‘Arcadiana’ written in 1994 by British composer Thomas Adès. This suite for string quartet depicts the mythical idyll of Arcadia over the course of its seven movements, one of which has been likened to the famous ‘Nimrod’ from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

Bonus Event

Starting at 6.30pm, there will be a pre-concert talk by the Gildas Quartet, who will provide a guide to ‘Arcadiana’, a work for which they are passionate advocates. With musical examples and the quartet’s insights into the piece, this promises to be a fascinating introduction to an intriguing work. Entry is free to all ticket-holders.

Do join us!

There is still time to join Music in Peebles and get the best value for your concert-going. Most gardeners shudder at the thought of fungus in the garden: the dreaded honey fungus that pops up around old trees and shrubs, toadstools in the lawn, lichen in damp grass - but fungi are a vital part of our ecosystems and at this time of year there are spectacular eruptions of them not very far from Peebles.

Fungi play an important role in maintaining health and vigour in our woodlands. They do this by forming a symbiotic relationship with the particular trees they live near. Each sort of tree has its own fungus partner and most of the time you would never know fungi were there; it’s only in the autumn when the fruiting bodies we call mushrooms appear that you begin to realise how many there are. Fungi are some of the largest organic forms on earth.

Mycorrhizal fungi work in two ways: they make the vast stores of organic nitrogen in the soil available to the trees and they may also help to defend the tree from bacterial invaders. Fungi also can act (like the honey fungus) to rot down dead trees and return those nutrients to the soil.

Mankind found out a long time ago that mushrooms were an excellent source of food and they learned to use fungi to make foodstuffs that require fermentation; for example, yeasts to make bread, blue cheese, soy sauce as well as beer and wine – most of the good things in life! Of course,

they also found that some mushrooms were quite deadly.

Modern medicine discovered medicines from fungi compounds – the most famous one was the first antibiotic, penicillin. Scientists also discovered immuno-suppressants and statins from fungi. More drugs are desperately needed now and they may come from research into the complex chemistry of fungi.

Mushrooms are not only very tasty but also very good for you too: they are low calorie, contain vitamins B and D and minerals like selenium, but it is a good idea to eat fresh mushrooms, grown in organic conditions where the fungi are not contaminated by their surroundings. Ideally, they can be grown easily in a shady corner of the vegetable garden in special baskets or on prepared logs.

To avoid problems with honey

fungus in the garden, remove the roots of any shrubs and trees you cut down. If it’s already there, don’t plant new woody material in that patch because it will just succumb to the fungus. Dog leaf lichen in the grass appears where there is very poor drainage and you can discourage it by spiking the lawn repeatedly. Toadstools appear in circles in the grass –fairy rings – and they are a quite short-lived phenomenon that can be mowed over.

Meanwhile, if there is a glorious autumn day, why not take the family on a fungus foray and learn more about them from experts? We have one of the best sites in the world right on our door step.

Who remembers the chip butties or the ha’penny and penny sweeties in the Coffee Pot in the Northgate? Steve ran the café with his wife Angela from 1972 until 1994.

Steve and Angela first set foot in Peebles in June 1972 for a social visit and met Ivan Goodfellow, the jeweller in the Northgate who advised them to look at the shop across the road, owned by Mr Ellis and run as a café. A deal was agreed and the shop changed hands in October that year; the picture here shows Steve and Angela with son and daughter, Stefan and Lydia, in 1979.

The Coffee Pot was an ideal family cafe to visit. Mums loved it as, when their babies were teething, Angela would have an ice cream in their mouth before they could grizzle. Everything was homemade from tablet to cakes and she was famous for everything from her caramel shortbread and cheeseburgers to her chip rolls. It was a warm, welcoming place where everyone would gather, with families sitting in to eat. Every year they would take part in the Beltane competition for the window display. Angela knew everyone and everyone had a good word to say about Angela and Steve. The Coffee Pot was open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 am right through to 8:00pm.

Steve loves life in Peebles which is a marvellous town to live and bring a family up in. Sadly Angela passed away in 2004 and Steve now occupies his days with playing

golf four times a week, weather permitting, between Peebles and Innerleithen Golf Clubs. In September this year, Steve had his sixth hole in one on the 7th hole at Peebles, the first hole in one in a competition. Steve likes his garden and, right now, it is in full bloom with roses and geraniums brightening Edinburgh Road. Steve also likes his adopted country’s drink and enjoys a wee dram, in moderation!

Steve would love to see the shops fully occupied; he says the life of a town can be judged by the shops that serve the town and, whilst Peebles has an excellent selection of shops, it would be good to have every one occupied. The lovely building at Veitch’s corner really needs to be developed.

Many years ago, when Steve was playing golf at Harburn in West Lothian, he was struck by lightning at the twelfth hole, his playing partners saw his hair stand on end and Steve landed on the ground. He felt absolutely nothing but, after being helped up, the group behind came up and the lightning struck one of their players at the same spot. Both men finished their round of golf.

Born in Poland in 1926, Steve was almost 13 when the Germans invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. He was due to start High School later that month but, due to the invasion, there was no further education available and by Christmas that year Steve and his family were evicted from their smallholding.

His father secured a job on a large farm in the next village and they were given a house as part of his employment.

In 1940, for a short spell, Steve was drafted into the German Youth Camp and had to wear the brown uniform with the Nazi Swastika on his sleeve. He was then sent home and worked on the farm until 1944 with his father who had been a driver for the military in WW1. Steve was drafted into the military himself and eventually was sent to Holland as the war drew to a close to defend German interests. His unit spent most of the time retreating and was captured by the Canadian Forces. Within a fortnight Steve was in a Polish uniform in Scotland.

From 1944 to 1947 Steve served in the Military Police and then was demobbed. He had four brothers and three sisters. From a family of three girls and five boys one thing is clear; the invasion of Poland changed the family dynamics in that they were dispersed and, with Poland being controlled by the Russians, contact was not straightforward. Steve’s mother died in 1946 and he only met his father once in 1964 when Steve made the journey to Poland to see his family. The signs of wartime were still noticeable even then with bullet holes in walls and buildings unrepaired.

Steve and Angela met in West Calder where Angela worked in a café which Steve frequented as a patron. They married in 1955 with Steve working in the shale mines until they closed 1956 and then working in the café beside Angela. Between them working in the café and running the ice cream van this took Steve and Angela through to their visit to Peebles in 1972 where we pick them up. Their son, Stefan, is married and living Ireland with three children and Lydia, their daughter, lives in Peebles and has three children and four grandchildren.

Without doubt Poland’s loss was Peebles gain.

By the time you read this article we will know whether the people of Scotland have voted for independence or to remain part of the United Kingdom. However whether the decisions taken on our behalf are made at Westminster or Holyrood there seems to be a general feeling at grassroots level that little attention is paid to the opinions of local people about their local community. Peebles is a lovely place to live, to raise a family, to enjoy one’s retirement.

We know that nothing stays the same forever….. but whatever the outcome, it would be good to know that local views will be listened to in future decision-making processes.

There has been a lot of building in the town over the past few years, and still developers are lining up to construct more houses – north and south of the river. And if we get a second road bridge that will lead to still more house-building over the next 10 to 20 years. There is little sense that the authorities are listening to OUR views. We are struggling to incorporate this expanded population into the institutions and structures of the town. It is not enough to provide homes for commuters – we also need to work together to retain the town’s unique identity.

We are luckier than many small towns to have a wide variety

of local shops but we are all dismayed at the sorry state of Veitch’s which has lain empty for years. However most of us are unconvinced there is room for another restaurant – as proposed in a current application for change of use – and fear the opening of a new one will directly lead to the closure of another. Whilst we have expressed our views, these would be strengthened by the establishment of a local Chamber of Commerce.

Since Police Scotland withdrew Traffic Wardens we now see streets littered with cars parked on double yellow lines, pavements, at junctions, and also causing obstructions. Local motorists are the greatest offenders. We all have a responsibility to be more considerate.

Scottish Borders Council is seeking to cut £450,000 per year from its parks and green spaces maintenance budget (£47,000 in respect of Peebles). It will continue to maintain areas it has identified as important, but is looking for local groups and individuals to take on responsibility for maintenance of other areas, such as grass cutting on the slopes of Haylodge Park and maintenance of flower beds and grass verges along Edinburgh Road. Bonny Peebles already does a fabulous job tending flower beds around the town,

but its members feel they are unable to take on additional workload. Others will need to come forward and volunteer.

So what can be done at a local level to protect our town from the more unpopular moves and provide us with a plan for the future? We need to work together, be more vocal, and actively contribute to keeping Peebles “special” through our actions and through volunteering. In addition, the Community Council is supporting ‘Vision for Peebles’, set up to canvass views from local residents. Public meetings were held to discuss many topics including whether a second bridge across the Tweed would be a positive move, the safety and care of our children, and how we can better promote ourselves as a tourist destination. The aim of Vision for Peebles is to draw all that information together in a town masterplan.

Should you wish to become involved with the work of the Community Council or know more, you can contact us through our website.

Matches are now well underway at all levels of the Club. As we go to press, the 1stXV have a played two, won two record in BT National League One, following wins against Kelso (23-10) and Aberdeen Grammar (31-21). Tough assignments await in October however, when they meet Hillhead/Jordanhill at home on the 4th, Marr away (11th), Dundee HSFP at home on the 18th, and Jedforest away on the 25th. In the BT Cup meanwhile, they have been drawn away to Musselburgh in the second round, following their first round 66-7 victory against Greenock Wanderers. Early days for the 2ndXV who have only had one league match so far, but what a way to start, with an 81-14 win at home to Kelso ‘A’.

The Colts (Under 18’s) have also had a good start to the season. After some

really encouraging friendly wins, they started their Border Semi-Junior League campaign with two big wins against Langholm Colts and Hawick PSA, before coming up short against last season’s league winners Jed Thistle. Confidence is high however, and they will be looking to push for a top four place as the league progresses. The under 16’s have also started their Border Under 16 League campaign, with a win and a loss against Kelso and Melrose respectively. They currently lie in equal second in the league and similar to their older colleagues, will hope to press for a top four place throughout the year. On the representative front, five players have been selected for the Borders & East Lothian Extended Squad for the BT Academy matches coming up next month. They are Keir McDermott, James Walpole, Alex Tate, Roddy Guiney and Adam McDonald.

Further down the agegroups, the High School teams are continuing to develop and perform at the S1, S2 and U15 levels on Saturday mornings, while the primary aged level of the Club – Peebles Piranhas – are on

duty at Hay Lodge Park on Sunday mornings, from 10am.

The Club’s traditional base of Hay Lodge Park is now fully up and running. By the time you read this, a first match under floodlights will have taken place between the 2ndXV and Biggar 2nd’s. This will now be the principle training pitches for the whole club as well as the home match pitches for the 2ndXV, Colts and Under 16’s.

Full details of all matches at all levels, including kick off times, can be found on the Club’s website – www.peeblesrfc.org

The BridgeLatest news from The Bridge TweeddaleThe Bridge is part of a national network of Councils for Voluntary Service. We aim to represent and support the voluntary sector and to assist local organisations to get together for common purposes. We look to enable local people to gain access to decision-making processes which affect their lives and their communities.

Tweeddale Community NetworkThe autumn meeting of the Tweeddale Community Network, facilitated by The Bridge, took place in Peebles Community Centre (the Drill Hall) on 17 September 2014. Surprisingly perhaps, with less than 24 hours to go, the Independence Referendum was barely mentioned! Instead, attendees from a wide cross section of community focussed groups and organisations, all of whom operate within Tweeddale, enjoyed the chance to renew old contacts and make new ones with the aim of exchanging information, finding common cause and identifying opportunities for joint work and greater collaboration. Margaret Smail and Graham Easton from SBC Community Learning & Development gave a presentation on the evolving local Community Learning Partnership and John Montgomery from Peebles Citizens Advice Bureau showed a moving and thought provoking video made by young people in Berwickshire illustrating the role that CABs can play in assisting people of all ages to deal with issues such as debt, unemployment and homelessness. The next meeting of the Network will be in April 2015.

Forthcoming EventsThe Annual Christmas Market is a

fixture in the Peebles/Tweeddale calendar and is great source of fundraising for local groups and organisations. Last year 19 organisations raised over £4,000 between them. Tables are usually snapped up fast so don’t delay and get your table booked now!

Local Citizens PanelsThese panels aim to give people with a learning disability and their family carers a voice in the way that services are planned , prioritised and delivered. They are an important part of the new Scottish Borders Learning Disability Service governance arrangements. You can join your local Panel if you live in the Scottish Borders, are aged 16+, have a learning disability or care for someone who has. The Panels are a very positive way for people and families to get involved in making things better and having their say about the shape of opportunities and services for the years ahead.. There are five Panels across the Borders including the Tweeddale Panel. Discussions at the meetings are wide-ranging and varied. The meetings appear to work well where there is a balance of family carers and members with a learning disability. The Tweeddale

Panel has focussed on access issues within Peebles and has had two helpful speakers talk to the group: Jason Hedley from SBC and Councillor Catriona Bhatia. If you are interested in joining the Tweeddale Panel contact Jenny Gillies on 07816 171964 – email: [email protected].

WANTED! – COMMUNITY GROUP VOLUNTEER DRIVERSDoes your community group make use of the Tweed Wheels, minibus? Do you usually require Tweed Wheels to provide a volunteer driver for you? If so, we would like to encourage you to think about having someone within your group registered and trained as a driver for your group. The training is not onerous and having your own registered driver, or drivers, will help to ensure that you have a driver for your prospective journey. Please consider whether this could be appropriate for your group. To find out more contact Rosa or Anne at here at The Bridge at the number below or by email: [email protected] .

SERVICED OFFICE SPACES AVAILABLE.The Volunteer Resource Centre is the office base for the staff of The Bridge. Within the building we provide serviced office spaces at competitive rates for local community and voluntary organisations. This includes desk space, access to meeting rooms and part-time reception. We currently have two desk spaces available. Please get in touch for more details.

Til next time…….Graham

Cricket NewsPeebles County Cricket Club

www.peeblescountycc.hitscricket.com

Followers of Peebles County will be delighted and relieved to learn that once again County live to fight another season in Division 5 of the East of Scotland Cricket Association. The pall of uncertainty hanging over the Club vanished when news came through that the play-off on which County’s survival depended had produced a favourable outcome for them.

So County finish in eighth position in the League, the two teams below them Livingston and Boroughmuir drop to Division 6.

Out of 18 scheduled league games, Peebles won 5, lost 10 and only three matches were cancelled due to rain. Losing their last three games on the trot, including the very last one at home to fellow strugglers Falkland was not perhaps the best imaginable anti-relegation strategy, but they had done enough.

First the Falkland game. County had beaten the Fifers earlier in the season away from home in a thrilling encounter. Since that game both teams had struggled and as events transpired they faced each other on the last day of the season in a winner take all game.

Batting first, Peebles scored 180 for nine. This was largely due to a good opening partnership between Murray and Waddle which laid the foundations for a big total. Alas, County failed to capitalize on the good start and the final total looked fragile. When one considers that nearly

thirty extras were in the total, County really hadn’t delivered.

After a steady start Falkland grinded out the runs without conceding wickets. The spirit of the game was blighted by one scandalous decision which resulted in a batsman remaining at the crease when he had clearly hit the ball into the keeper’s gloves.

But there were other factors in County’s defeat. Their catching, hitherto so lethal, let them down badly on the day, and three difficult but potentially game-changing chances were dropped. The unfortunate fact of the matter was that they failed to post a big enough total. At least another 50 runs were needed.

One can sum up County’s season by paraphrasing an old nursery rhyme: when they were good, they were very good............when they were bad they were horrible!

The highlights of the season were two excellent victories over Edinburgh Academicals, a team who finished in the top half, and the above mentioned victory away at Falkland.

The nadir of their season were three defeats at Marchmont, Drummond Trinity and Penicuik. Not only did County fail to score 100 runs in any of these matches, but they emerged from all three with only 2 bonus points. Had they accumulated as many points as they had done in their other defeats, then they would have finished the season comfortably mid-table. Collapsus

peebleus is a virus which must be eradicated.

Man of the season is Pete Caddick. Few teams escaped the wrath of his batting. He finished with over 500 runs and an astonishing batting average of over 70. He sits top of the League’s top batting performers. His achievements also include 17 wickets.

Maxwell, Waddle and Murray also made it into the top performers batting list, and Caddick and Murray also appear in the top performers catching with 5 catches each.

Julian Pace was consistently a sure-footed and sure-gloved keeper who took ten catches, topping the list of catchers and showing a commendable frugality in the very few byes he conceded. Not very much got past him and some of his takes were brilliant and match-changing.

Oliver Rimmer wins a cap with his five-wicket haul at Bouroughmuir.

Cricket is the sum of its parts and everyone did their bit.

If County aspire to being anything other than the great escape artists of division 5,than will need to improve their batting and develop a more assassin-like mentality in games which could go either way.

Thanks to all who participated this season.

Paul Murray

Many thanks to all who came along to our “early” Autumn Concert at which we presented some of the music for our trip to Germany. It was a very successful and enjoyable evening, and if the audience response was anything to go by then our programme should go down well in Germany. Thanks are due to all who donated raffle prizes and, in particular, the Cross Keys (meal for two) and Scotmid (vouchers).

This article is being written two days before our departure to the Bad Schlema Music Festival so a report of our adventures will appear in the November edition of Peebles Life. Immediately on our return from Germany we will be starting to rehearse the music for the Borders Entertainment Contest (BEC) which takes place on Saturday 1st November. The contest rotates through the various

towns in the Borders which have brass bands, and this year it is the turn of Peebles to host the event. We last hosted the competition in 2009 when it was held in the Leckie Church however on this occasion the contest is being staged at the High School. Although the school is not very central it has the best mix of facilities to allow the contest to be run as efficiently as possible. There will be 20 bands attending the event and they come mostly from central/south Scotland and the north of England.

For most of its history, music presented at the competition has had to conform to a pre-determined theme. However as it’s quite difficult to keep coming up with novel themes it was decided that, this year, the choice of music would be left up to the individual bands. Each band has to play for a maximum of 15 minutes with the only condition being

that one of the items must be a single movement from a recognised contest piece. Although this is a contest its aim, as its name suggests, is to present music which will entertain and can be enjoyed by the general public. There will be five solid hours of music with something to suit everyone, so if you are interested in brass music please come along. It will be a very busy day for the local band as not only do we take part in the competition, we are also heavily involved in organising and administering the event.

We gratefully acknowledge the support given by those businesses who have advertised in the contest programme, and special thanks go to BARC Coach Hire and Brown Brothers Peebles who have sponsored the contest.
