December is almost invariably one of the busiest issues of the magazine each year. At a time when I am only just beginning to get my head round Christmas being much closer than my present buying suggests, the articles start popping into the email account and the excitement of the season begins. For many though it’s the sight of the Christmas Lights that really sets off the buzz and we are delighted to include details of the big switch on at the beginning of the month. Amongst other festive themed items, we have details of the Christmas Church services and the Big Issue looks at the issue of loneliness, often exacerbated at this time of year.

Amongst other regular features, the Political Page comes from Councillor Catriona Bhatia and we have reports from the rugby club, the silver band, Peebles Garden and the Community Centre while our long overdue Portrait features David Turnbull, one of the driving forces behind the annual Beltane Festival. Out and About is delighted to report on both the 60th anniversary of Peebles Floral Art Club and the 40th anniversary of the Gutterbluids Association. Artistically we have details of the forthcoming Music in Peebles concert, Inchorus bring us up to date with their activities and the Eastgate shares their December programme as well as details of a new Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair. On the charitable front, there is information about two High School pupils raising money for Project Trust, Home Basics announce their initiative to introduce a Reuse Cabin at Selkirk Recycling Centre and last, but by no means least, Barry Hughes tells us of his plan to run a marathon a month in 2015 to raise money for the Peebles branch of the MS Society – a braver person than me!

The magazine this month also features two contributed pieces which, initially, appear very different in nature but, on a closer look, turn out to be connected. Firstly we have an item on cycling and horse riding responsibly. As the daylight hours are shorter there are more people using rights of way at the same time and this piece hopes to address potential areas of conflict. In the other item, Kingsmeadows Dental Practice has kindly contributed an article on what to do if you damage a tooth, something that has become more prevalent with the increase in outdoor sports.

Finally, we’d like to remind you that the deadline for the January edition of Peebles Life falls a week earlier than usual on the 12th December. So if you’ve got anything you would like publicised, please do get the details to us in good time and we can help everyone start filling their diaries for the New Year. In the meantime, Linda, Charles and I would like to be amongst the very first to wish you a happy, companionable Christmas!

Jacqui

Big Issue Unless you’ve been on some long, intrepid trip up the deepest, darkest Amazon, it can hardly come as a surprise that Christmas is just around the corner (and, to be quite frank, I’m not entirely sure that you would escape the harbingers of Noel in remote South America). Adverts have been all sparkly and merry since the beginning of November, showing the latest must-have toys and gadgets, the perfect outfit for Christmas Day and the sofa that your nearest and dearest simply must lounge on whilst imbibing another glass of champagne or wolfing down that fourth mince pie; which brings us neatly onto the subject of Christmas food. For Christmas 2014, the supermarkets seem to be going all out to encourage us to buy more and buy better (though often at an apparently reasonable price). Their adverts show impossibly cute children sitting beside impeccably preserved grandparents whilst indulgent parents smile in the background or groups of friends and colleagues gathered round tables groaning with endless nourishment, sharing crackers and jokes – the biggest of these ads manage to include all the above possibilities! Oh, how we are supposed to aspire to achieve the Christmas they offer!

The reality is substantially more cruel. The Royal Voluntary Service recently published statistics suggesting that, last year, more than 300,000 over 75’s spent Christmas Day alone with the figure expected to rise to almost ½ million this year. Reasons given vary from family living far away or abroad to not speaking to their children any longer to not wishing to put their busy family under any more pressure at Christmas. Sadly some even

admit they simply haven’t been invited to share the day with anyone. The RVS have partnered with the Community Christmas Project which has the aim that no-one should spend Christmas alone if they don’t want to. Their website encourages communities to provide companionship to older people on Christmas day by running a Christmas Lunch event, joining up with others at a local pub or restaurant or even just popping round for tea and cake. Events can be listed online to allow everyone to join in.

Whilst this scheme is clearly well-meaning, it does however take some effort on the part of the person who wishes to participate to find the event and also some courage to walk into a room of near or potential strangers on that most family of days. As a child, there were invariably a couple of spinster aunts round our Christmas table (some of them may actually have been relations but I’m pretty positive several were not). My parents and aunt alternated hosting Christmas Dinner and, if either knew of someone who had nowhere to go, they were simply invited along and we peeled a few more potatoes. Each of those ladies added to our celebrations as, hopefully, we added to theirs. Don’t get me wrong, we weren’t the Waltons by any means, it was simply the way my parents had shared their childhood Christmases with the previous generations, not long after the end of WWII which had seen so much loss, and so was perfectly normal

to them.

Over the past thirty years though things seem to have changed. As our lives become busier, we value precious time with our own immediate family more and more and, in certain households, Christmas has become a time for parents and children only. One poster on an online (not local) forum recently asked how she could get out of seeing her parents and parents-in-law on Christmas Day as she wished to spend the time with her husband and children, snuggled up in pyjamas watching Christmas films. How on earth have we strayed so far from those advert images and from previous generations as to not want our own parents to share the fun and laughter, the sense of belonging, let alone slightly more distant family?

It’s easy to get caught up in the moment we live in. Those of us with young children get sucked into the excitement of whether Santa will bring the very present they most desire. Those of us with older children wonder whether Santa can afford that self same most wanted gift. Some of us have carved out a Christmas shared with friends but all of us hope never to be in the position of the parents of that online forum poster. A little thought and time for the members of our community who have no-one to share the day with would go a long way to reminding us all what Christmas is really about.

The Peeblesshire Trout Fishing Association offers excellent fishing for brown trout and grayling in the very heart of the Scottish Borders. The Association ticket allows fly-fishing on approximately 23 miles of the River Tweed and 5 miles of the Lyne Water in Peeblesshire with the exception of private stretches which are clearly marked with notice boards. Season tickets and day tickets are widely available both locally and online for a modest cost. Fishing is by fly only throughout the season except for anglers under 13 years of age who may fish with bait on Peebles Town Water from the top end of Hay Lodge P ark to Priorsford Bridge. The Association operates a strict catch and release policy with the use of barbless, de-barbed or micro-barb hooks. However, "trophy" fish of 22 inches or more can be kept.

Fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling is an ideal way to relax and rid yourself of the stresses and strains of modern life. In an attractive rural setting you can leave the day’s care behind whilst you pit your wits against the artful brown trout and the graceful grayling.

The Tweed offers an unrivalled opportunity to fish for wild brown trout and grayling in a beautiful rural environment at a large number of locations, both easily accessible and remote.

Where to fish The most easily accessible stretches of the Tweed are, not surprisingly, the most fished and anglers might wish to try some of the stretches of the Association’s waters further away from the main towns.

Brown Trout Wild brown trout are found throughout the Tweed and specimens of over 6 lbs. have been caught. Many of the largest brown trout in the Tweed originate in the upper stretches of the Association’s waters. The season for brown trout runs from 1 April to 30 September.

Grayling Large shoals of grayling are present in the Tweed in Peeblesshire in a number of areas and they show the high quality of the water. Grayling of over 3lbs. have been caught and it can only be a matter of time before a UK record breaking grayling is caught! The season for grayling runs from 1 January to 30 September.

Tackle and Techniques

Dry Fly - the Tweed has some excellent hatches of fly throughout the season and as such, dry fly has traditionally been the preferred method of local anglers. Hatch times vary depending on the river conditions but generally, these occur during the day in the early part of the season between April and June and in the evening during the warmer months of July and August.

Suitable dry flies (size 14 – 18) include:

March Brown Iron Blue Dun Blue Hen& Rust Yellow Sally Border Greenwell Grey Hen &Rust Blue Hen & Yellow Sedges Greenwells Glory Grey Hen &Yellow Blue winged olive

Wet Fly - wet fly can be productive during fly hatches and at times when there is no surface activity. Wet fly is probably the best method for anyone new to fly fishing or for those who struggle to see a small dry fly in broken water. It is also the only method suitable for night fishing which is allowed during June and July.

Suitable wet flies (size 12 - 18) include:

March Brown Iron Blue Invicta Silver Butcher Greenwells Spiders Wickams Fancy Olives ares lug Mallard & Claret

Nymph - nymph fishing is the least used method locally but can be highly successful and is becoming increasingly popular. Some anglers have had good catches using weighted / Czech Nymphs, especially in deep fast streams that are not suitable for wet or dry fly. Also, Grayling tend to be caught more often using this method. Suitable flies (size 12 - 14) include: various weighted bugs / Czech Nymphs

Home Basics is a charity established for the relief of poverty of the inhabitants of the local area by collecting, refurbishing and storing donated furniture and household goods and selling them at affordable prices to those in need.

Whilst Home Basics prioritises disadvantaged clients, our two outlets in Walkerburn and Hawick are also open to the public for furniture sales, with all proceeds going towards sustaining and developing the charity’s services.

Home Basics is pleased to announce a new environmental initiative to give a helping hand to those in need working in partnership with Scottish Borders Council to open the region’s first Reuse Cabin at Selkirk Community Recycling Centre.

Households are being asked to donate unwanted electrical items to a new initiative aiming to help disadvantaged people in the Borders.

From Monday 13 October, the cabin will accept any donated electrical item that is in good, working condition. Home Basics will then collect the products and put the items through a thorough quality and safety check before being made available to the most in need people in the region.

Any items that are not in working order can continue to be recycled at the Borders six community recycling centres but not in the reuse cabin at Selkirk.

SBC’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, Councillor David Paterson, opened the cabin alongside Home Basics Business

Manager Dennis Fisher.

Councillor Paterson said: “I am very pleased that the reuse cabin has opened in Selkirk. If this cabin proves to be a success, SBC will look to extend the initiative to other community recycling centres.”

Dennis Fisher added: “It is a brilliant idea. It not only helps those people in need in the Borders but also has a positive environmental impact. I hope the people of the Borders will give generously to support this scheme. It is a great opportunity.”

And if you fancy volunteering, volunteers are always needed to help with sales, organising the warehouse and other volunteer opportunities.

If you wish to find out more about Home Basics or if you would like to donate goods please contact us on 01896 870455, via [email protected], through our website at www.homebasics.org.uk, or better still come and see us at Unit 7, Tweedvale Mills east, Walkerburn.Scottish Charity No: SC033827

For the last meeting of the autumn session, we welcomed Jean Proudfoot from Borders Deaf & Hard of Hearing Network, who along with her husband Andrew brought along a wide range of equipment to help those with hearing loss. This is a small charity based at The Hive in Galashiels, where they have a whole roomful of equipment and the display that Jean brought along was only a small selection, but many of us were surprised at the range of equipment available to those with hearing loss. From doorbells with a wireless flashing light receiver to equipment to help you enjoy watching the television without the volume being unbearably loud to others in the household to an under pillow aid which

helps those with tinnitus to sleep.

Borders Deaf & Hard of Hearing Network is a superb charity, which also runs a loan service for people to try out various items for up to two weeks to ensure that when they make their purchase, it is the right one for them. I would like to thank Jean and Andrew for giving us such an interesting and informative talk and for providing such valuable information.

We are now looking forward to our Christmas Lunch at the Green Tree Hotel in early December with the entertainment provided by Garry James, who is an awarding winning magician. Will members who require

the Community Bus, please remember that you must phone the Secretary (telephone number below) by 1pm on Monday, 1 December 2014. The community bus will start collecting members at 11:45pm – but your name must be on the list!

What to do if you damage a tooth

If there is damage to a tooth especially if the tooth is knocked out

• Keep the patient calm.• Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white bit you can normally

see in the mouth). Avoid touching the root.• If it is a milk tooth (baby tooth) –put it under your pillow for the

tooth fairy! If you are unsure keep the tooth wet as below and see a dentist ASAP.

• If the tooth is an adult tooth and is dirty, wash it briefly, ideally in milk, but if this is not available use cold running water DO NOT SCRUB the tooth.

• Do not worry if you cannot wash all the dirt off.• Try slipping the tooth back into its socket. In many cases it will just slip back in. Make

sure it is facing the right way! Bite on a handkerchief/clean tissue to keep the tooth in place

• Do not force the tooth back in.• If you cannot do this then the tooth needs to be kept moist until you can see a dentist.• Ideally ‘store ‘the tooth in the mouth between the cheek and gum. A young child may not

be able to do this safely. Then get the ‘patient’ to spit in a cup and place the tooth in it or place the tooth in milk. Do not put the tooth in water.

• The time to get to a dentist is very important now. Contact your own dentist ASAP and explain what has happened. Ideally you want to see a dentist within 60 minutes if possible.

If just a part of the tooth is damaged do keep this again either in the mouth or in saliva/milk and see a dentist ASAP as it can often be re-cemented back into position.

With Peebles having such a thriving mountain bike scene and a rugby being played by so many children and adults there are unfortunately going to be instances where a tooth is damaged by trauma.

Do you know what to do when this happens?

For rugby it is common to wear a gum shield which protects

not just the teeth but also the tongue, the jaw and can prevent the forces of trauma affecting the brain causing concussion. This should be something that is considered for mountain biking too for the same reason. There is no dispute that the best protection available is a ‘custom made’ gum shield which fits well and is of the correct thickness to offer optimal protection. Speak to your dentist about this - yes they are

more expensive than a ‘boil and bite’ but they offer much better protection.

If somebody falls off their bike or is in a heavy collision the first thing to check is that they were not unconscious. Amnesia (not knowing where you are), nausea and vomiting are all signs of brain damage and require medical attention immediately.

Peebles Gutterbluids Society celebrates 40 years of service to the local community, this year. Over the years, hundreds of hours have been spent carrying out a huge variety of projects, to help maintain and improve local amenities in and around the Royal Burgh. To mark this anniversary, the Society has produced a DVD of all the old Minute Books of the original Peebles Gutterbluid Club, which was in existence from 1823 – 1914. The hand-written Minutes provide a unique and fascinating glimpse into life in Peebles, stretching from almost 200 years ago, up until 100 years ago, when ‘The Great War’ began. At only £10 each, copies of the DVD can be obtained from the Society Secretary at ‘Lyndene’, Damdale, Peebles EH45 8DQ, (Tel. 722024). All proceeds from the sale of the DVD will go into the Society funds, and will be used to finance the various projects carried out for the benefit of the local community. An example of the type of project

undertaken is the installation of the Christmas Nativity Scene Tableau, (all hand-made!), which graces the Parish Church Steps each year during the festive season, - a project that has now been carried out for more than 30 years! The Society is indebted to Mark Spalding for the work involved in producing the original DVD from the old Minute Books, and to John Swanson, of ‘Peebles Beltane Video’, for providing the copies for sale. Neglected Masterpieces to be RevealedThere are certain chamber music line-ups that somehow get overlooked. While string quartets, piano trios, wind quintets and so on are staple fare, the piano quartet does not seem to feature so prominently in the schedules. In its December concert, Music in Peebles is out to restore the balance and remind us all what wonderful music has been written for the combination of violin, viola, cello and piano.

The Frith Piano Quartet

It was this relative neglect that led to the formation of the Frith Piano Quartet, when a group of like-minded musicians got together to explore the rich repertoire for this medium.

Benjamin Frith is one of the UK’s leading pianists who regularly appears as concerto soloist and recitalist, as well as in chamber ensembles such as the Gould Piano Trio. He is joined by string players who have held positions in several leading string quartets and orchestras, including the Endellion and Chilingirian Quartets and the Royal Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras.

The Music

The Czech composer Josef Suk was a pupil of his more famous compatriot Dvořák (who later became his father-in-law). It was his teacher’s encouragement that led to Suk writing his Piano Quartet in A minor, which was published as his Opus 1, and history records that the master was very impressed with his student’s work. However, it has lain neglected for many years, and the Frith Piano Quartet deserve our gratitude for restoring this fine work to the repertoire.

With its wonderful tunes, elements of Czech folk music, and sheer joyfulness, Dvořák’s music is always a great favourite with Peebles audiences. His second piano quartet, like his pupil’s, is also unjustly overlooked in the concert hall, but the Frith Quartet will reveal it for the masterpiece it is.

The final work in the programme is one of the giants of the piano quartet repertoire, the first of three written by Brahms. Although rooted in the Classical style, particularly of Schubert, it is also a forward-looking work in its inventiveness. Above all, the majestic grandeur of its slow movement and the Hungarian dash of the finale are quintessential Brahms.

Christmas is Coming!

Looking for a Christmas gift with a difference? Music in Peebles has the answer! A ‘half season’ membership gives admission to all four remaining concerts in the season, all of

them promising music-making of the very highest quality. On sale for £36, this is the ideal present for any music lover. Or why not treat yourself? At only £9 a concert, it’s great value and a saving of £5 a concert on normal prices.

For further details, and to take advantage of this offer, please contact Tony Bell on 01721 722788.

Christmas Time Christmas, love it or hate it, but you can’t avoid it, round it comes every 12 months. The only way to miss it would be to hibernate. Christmas day is only one day but the festive season has now expanded over the years. Goodies appear in the shops months before, the actual party season begins in late November right through to early January. It is therefore not surprising that the average person puts on 5-7lb over this time. Add on the stress of buying and paying for presents, late nights, visiting relatives (some of who you may not get on with) unhealthy/over eating and general pressure, and you are heading for a frazzled worn out start to the New Year. Then January arrives and you feel low, tired, a bit podgy and ready to grab onto the latest “quick fix” that is on offer but are not always very healthy in the long term.

So what is the answer? Don’t be hooked into buying all the food that is on offer, allow yourself some treats but don’t go mad.If you have a late night follow it up with an early one.Try to allow yourself time to relax doing something you enjoy.Stick to your normal exercise routine, if you do not have one, it’s a good time to start, you don’t need to wait until the magic January 1st, start now! But most of all have a good time, have a great festive season and look forward to 2015.Lesley

On the first Saturday in November, the Band had the honour of hosting this year’s Borders Entertainment Contest. Seventeen bands from all over Scotland attended the contest which was held at the High School. Tullis Russell band from Glenrothies were eventual winner closely followed by Shotts St Partrick’s and Irvine and Dreghorn. Unfortunately, we ended up further down the results list than we would have liked. Nevertheless our disappointment was somewhat offset by the fact that it was a very successful day. The contest ran like clockwork, and there were many good remarks from visiting bands about the day’s organisation. A lot of hard work was put in by Silver Band members, many of whom were on duty for most of the day. The event was made even more successful by our excellent food and drink “outlet” located in

the school dining hall. So many thanks to Bobby and Sheila Reid and helpers, who supplied the food and Tom Menzies and bar staff who dispensed the refreshments. Thanks are also due to the contest sponsors, Brown Brothers Peebles and BARC Coach Hire. We are equally grateful to all the local businesses who took advertising space in the contest programme.

With Christmas fast approaching rehearsals are well under way putting together the programme for our Christmas Concert which will take place on Friday 12th at 7.30pm. Last year the concert was held in the Parish Church however this year we are returning to our traditional venue in the Burgh Hall. The development and junior bands will also be taking part and we will be joined once again by Kingsland School Choir. This is

always a popular and enjoyable night and definitely gets everyone into the Christmas spirit, so don’t delay in buying your tickets. These can be obtained from Keystore (Robbs Newsagents) or at the door on the night.

We will be playing carols on the High Street and other parts of the town on the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas, so do stop and listen to us. On Christmas Eve itself,we will be out playing at the Parish Church steps in the early part of the evening.

Finally as the year heads towards its close, the Band would like to thank all who have supported us over the past twelve months and we wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

SLEEPHave you heard about the Council’s SLEEP project? Perhaps not, (it stands for Street Lighting Energy Efficiency Project) but it is one of those projects which has efficiencies (not cuts) and environmental improvements wrapped up in one. To be specific it involves the Council converting 13000 street lighting lanterns from Sodium to LED over the next 5 years. The new units will use 60% less electricity, and also have a much longer life which generates savings in maintenance and replacements too. All of those factors are important but for me, the major benefit is the reduction in light pollution which is evident when you see the lights in operation. Coming to a street near you soon!

FISCAL EMPOWERMENT TASK FORCEOne of the aspects of the recent Independence debate which was noticeable by its absence was the future role of Local Government in Scotland, whether it be as part of a separate nation or as the vote decided a nation with greater devolution of powers.

Whilst all of the political parties argued to a greater or lesser degree that Holyrood should have tax setting powers, there was no such debate about the future funding of Councils. If the principle holds that full democratic responsibility is linked to the ability to raise or lower taxes, then this must hold for all spheres of Government, including Local Government. Only 20% of Council spend is raised through Council Tax, the remainder is a grant from the Scottish Government. Over the past 7 years the Council Tax freeze, has further removed the democratic accountability of Councillors. To seek to address this on a cross-party basis, I have been nominated as a member of the CoSLA (the Scottish Councils umbrella group) rather grandly named Fiscal Empowerment Task Force. I would be very interested to hear views on how you think Local Government should be funded and how much of that should be the responsibility of Councillors, and how much should remain within the gift of Central Government.

NATIONALITIESI have recently been taken to task over questioning whether a person’s Nationality was relevant in reporting a crime.

What matters is the crime, the victim and the subsequent process of justice. I fail to see where in that process a person’s Nationality is important, any more or less than their race, religion or sexual orientation (none of which would be permitted to be reported). As a lifelong Liberal I firmly believe that judging someone on the “content of their character” will always be more important than any other factor.

CHRISTMASIt’s almost here – the cute TV adverts, the sparkly lights, the excited children are upon us, well in advance of Christmas Day itself. As well as a time for celebration and repeating of time honoured family traditions (Dad always gets a Chocolate Orange from Santa), it is also a time to count our blessings, and think of others for whom this is a difficult time due to loss, illness or loneliness. So may I wish all of you a Christmas of warmth and companionship, and hope that a long forgotten Christmas memory fills your heart with a happy glow.

Peebles PortraitsDavid TurnbullWhether walking alongside the Fancy Dress and Saturday Parades or riding the marches, resplendent in his red jacket, Davie Turnbull is a more than familiar part of the annual Beltane celebrations. Born and raised in Peebles with his three brothers and sister, Davie was educated at St Joseph’s followed by Peebles High School. He freely admits school wasn’t really his thing with his childhood memories featuring guddling around in the Tweed or building dens up Venlaw with his older brothers rather than education. He left school at 15 “due to lack of interest”, taking up a job at Kerfield Farm before joining Jimmy Clyde & Sons as an apprentice plumber with Jimmy Greenshields as his journeyman. Davie enjoyed his training, noting it was nice to work alongside the local worthies in the building trade.

Having completed his apprenticeship, Davie followed two of his brothers into the police force in 1974. Beginning his career in Peebles, he subsequently transferred to Duns and then joined traffic, based in Eyemouth, Galashiels and finally back in Peebles. He remarks that he particularly enjoyed the freedom of the traffic division which allowed him to set his own day to some extent and that the cars were a bonus. During this period he married wife, Janette, and their children, Paul and Nicola joined the family. Following retirement from the police force, Davie set up a taxi company with Ian Campbell before joining Contact where he currently works.

Away from work, Davie is a member of the Guildry and the Callants and Ex-Cornets

Associations but he is inevitably most known for his role as Joint Secretary of the Beltane Committee. Having been Cornet in 1974, a year in which he felt he was treated like a king, Davie became a member of the committee. Two years later the long-standing Secretary, Dennis Tammy, mentioned to Davie and Allan Beveridge that he intended to emigrate and suggested that they might take on the role between them. Following approval, this pair have now worked together for almost 40 years, putting on a festival that has gone from strength to strength. Davie remarks that, in the 1970’s, fewer than 100 horses rode the marches whereas recent years have seen this rise to around 250. Initially the task was principally logistical, booking bands and lorries, arranging guests etc. however, as the years have passed, the bureaucracy involved has steadily increased to include risk assessments, applications for road closures, contingency plans, the list is almost endless and Davie points out that occasionally it is necessary to stand firm against new requests and restrictions. He is, however, a firm believer in progress and would love to see new faces with new ideas getting involved to support the committee who are faced with the challenge of celebrating traditions balanced with an ever-expanding population. On a lighter note when asked which part of Beltane he enjoys most, Davie answers surprisingly that it is not one of the set pieces that stands out but rather the chaos of Kingsmeadows Car Park and the formation of the parade after the Crowning Ceremony when all the children are getting on

their lorries. He also admits that being in the Chambers Institute after the Beating of the Retreat, when all has gone well, gives him a huge sense of satisfaction (and not a little relief!)

Turning to the town as a whole, Davie believes that the expansion which has taken place so far has been reasonably measured and manageable, however he is concerned that, whilst a second Tweed Bridge may be of benefit to some individuals in Peebles, it would also open the south side of the town up to potentially massive growth and that this would require new schools, an overhaul of the local health service and a review of the current policing situation. He would also love to see the council being a little more proactive in maintaining the amenity and the beauty of the town with more sweeping brushes and a lick or two of paint. In terms of whom he admires, Davie is quick to cite the Swanson family as a group, pointing out that they are involved in so many different voluntary organisations in Peebles and, whilst there are lots of people who get involved, this family stands out.

As ever, we ask the Portrait to finish by revealing a little known fact about themselves. Most begin by suggesting that they are an open book before revealing some strange event or skill lurking in their past. Davie, however, breaks the mould by sticking to his story of no secrets. We therefore open the debate up to the wider community – if you know a tale from a distant Beltane or Callant’s Supper, do share!

Horse riders and cyclists are amongst those using shared-use paths and other routes, to access their local area and countryside to enjoy the outdoors. A guidance leaflet, “Getting the best from Shared-use paths: A guide for cyclists and horse riders” produced by Cycling Scotland and The British Horse Society, with the support of Scottish Natural Heritage, provides guidance for all access takers, but is designed to encourage good communication and interaction between cyclists and horse riders, and increase awareness of their different needs.

What to do if you are a Cyclist: Let other path users know you are there: A ring of your bell or a cheerful ‘hello’ (in plenty of time) for walkers or horse riders is welcome and important in alerting horses (and others) that you are approaching from behind.

Slow down if you meet other path users: Fast, quiet bicycles can startle walkers and

horse riders or their mounts. Be prepared to dismount if required. (Only pass when other is aware of your presence, and pass slowly.)

Keep off soft ground: Avoid riding on soft ground if this will churn it up and make it unpleasant for others.

Use common sense to avoid accidents: Show care and consideration and make sure your speed doesn’t alarm or scare others.

If you meet a horse rider –

Make yourself known: Horses can’t see behind themselves. A ‘hello’ or ring of your bell lets them know you’re there. Hold back until the rider indicates it’s alright to pass. (Horses prefer a voice to a bell ring!)

Pass horses wide and slow: If a horse is startled by your presence, stop and let the horse move around you.

Keep dogs calm and under close control: Horses can become frightened by dogs running around their feet or yapping at them. Please keep your dog under close control.

What to do if you are a Horse Rider:Slow down if you meet other path users: Riders might be used to the size of their horses and ponies, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is. Be prepared to dismount if required.

Mind your dung!: Try to move your horse off the path before it dungs. Otherwise, if it is safe to do so, dismount and kick the dung off the path.

Keep off soft ground: Avoid riding on soft ground if this will churn it up and make it unpleasant for others.

Be prepared: Make sure your horse is fit for the proposed ride and is well enough schooled to cope with all the situations you are likely to meet.

Wear fluorescent clothing: Irrespective of time of day or weather conditions. This helps other trail users see you.

All access takers should enjoy Scotland’s outdoors responsibly. Whether walking, running, cycling, or horse riding, when you’re in the outdoors: take personal responsibility for your actions, act safely, and respect others. Access rights and responsibilities are explained in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Know the Code before you go. See: outdooraccess-scotland.com

In 1954 the Peebles Floral Art Club was founded by Mrs Miretta Hamilton, wife of the then Parish Church Minister. The inaugural meeting took place on 8th November at 7.30pm in the Leckie Memorial Hall with a membership fee of 15 shillings.

At that time there were only two other Flower Clubs in Scotland, one in Glasgow and the other in Edinburgh. The Scottish Association of Flower Arrangers (SAFAS) was not founded till 1956. Today Scotland boasts over 80 Clubs affiliated to the National Association of Flower Arrangers (NAFAS).

Membership of a National and, indeed International Organisation brings access to trained demonstrators, speakers, teachers and qualified judges. There is the opportunity to learn more about plants, flowers and floral design and be involved, or simply visit, the many prestigious flower events around the country. Most important is the social contact with people who share a love of flowers.

The original ethos of Peebles Floral Art Club, - Fun, Friendship and Flowers, is still embraced today by the 41 current members. That this has been maintained over the

past 60 years is testimony to the solid foundation laid by previous members and past office-bearers.

The Club has always been very involved in the life of the town. Each year the posies for the Beltane Queen and her Court are prepared by the Club. Visits are made to local schools during Arts Week when children are given the opportunity to experience flower arranging by making posies for their families and friends. This opportunity to have a hands-on experience is extended to all in Peebles in the Burgh Hall during Arts Week.

Many of the members support the Annual Horticultural Show by exhibiting designs in the Floral Art Class. Another local involvement greatly enjoyed is that of decorating Traquair House for its annual Christmas open week-end.

At our monthly meetings, held in the Bakewell Hall of St Andrews Leckie Church, we bring the very best talents and styles in Floral Art from National and Area Demonstrators. We do, however, provide practical workshop evenings where our members, new or experienced, can hone their skills and gain new inspiration.

On 20th November, after a fun workshop entitled

‘Diamonds are Forever’ led by Mrs Margaret Adamson, our Honorary President, Mrs Nancy Forsyth, cut the Anniversary Cake to celebrate the 60 years of Peebles Floral Art Club. The current Chairperson, Mrs Morag Milloy, said that just as diamonds are enduring and lasting in all their sparking splendor so she hoped that Peebles Floral Club would continue for another 60 years to provide a place for future generations to enjoy the fun, friendship and flowers which is the hallmark of the Club.

To help celebrate this special year, our Open Christmas Evening at Peebles Hydro, entitled ‘Winter Wonderland’, will feature the internationally acclaimed demonstrator, Derek Armstrong. This promises to be memorable evening.

We are always delighted to welcome new members to our Club. What could be better, after all, than to enjoy a relaxing evening among friends, learning new skills and watching beautiful flowers transformed into amazing designs.

These pictures taken recently at an InChorus InHouse weekend, which took place at the wonderful Newlands Centre, show that the choir was enjoying, in addition to singing, a bit of dressing up. They found the experience so much fun that they and Musical Director, Aly Skidmore, have decided to include the pieces in their next concert.

Therefore, the choir asks that you put a date into your 2015 diary NOW so that they can share their enjoyment with you.

Join them for the InChorus ‘Beat the Winter Blues Concert’ at Peebles Old Parish Church on Saturday, January 31st at 7.30pm for an evening of pure entertainment. All will be revealed then.

Tickets cost £8 (concessions £5, pre-school children free) and are available now from choir members, and from Monday 5th January at Graham McGrath, Outfitters and Tailors, Eastgate, Peebles. For further choir information look online at www.inchorus.org.uk

L’hiver: sounds like shiver, doesn’t it? Where I come from everything freezes in the winter: the rivers and lakes freeze, the rain freezes, the sea freezes. The ground freezes solid – we call it ‘locking up’.

Even your car will freeze solid if you don’t plug it in. Once the leaves fall, the sap drains out of deciduous shrubs and trees; the frozen branches screech and moan in the wind.

So imagine my surprise when I first came to live in Scotland and looked out my kitchen window one dark December morning to see a shrub in full bloom! Lit in low morning sunshine, it had dark green, shiny leaves and crowns of yellow spiky flowers that smelt like lily of the valley!

The shrub that delighted me is Mahonia, a plant found on the west coast of North America and also in parts of Asia and the Himalaya. Mahonia is a

broadleaf evergreen, valuable as a structural plant but also a bit susceptible to cold east winds and winter wet because our woody plants stay sappy all winter.

Occasionally old specimens die back in very cold winters but they can often be resuscitated with pruning, feeding and mulching. Indeed, that’s the trick with all broadleaves: give them some shelter and a sunny position, make sure they are well-drained and mulch them up. Allowing old wood to accumulate is not a good idea: prune that out in mid-summer right back to the ground to encourage new shoots.

Sometimes winter can start early in mid-November and last well into March, so you can see how important it is to include some of these winter-flowering stars in your garden. In early winter, besides the mahonia, skimmia buds and viburnum

tinus will add colour, and so will winter-flowering viburnum. The yellow stars of winter-flowering jasmine are good, especially if you grow the jasmine through a large-leaved ivy like Paddy’s Pride.

The next true star is hamamelis or witch hazel, flowering on bare branches in January. This is a tough plant, very slow-growing so it does not require any pruning. It will reward you with winter flower and scent and autumn colour to match the flower colour. Most have yellow flowers but Diane is fiery red. This is one plant you will want to see from the window in any available winter sun.

In a mild position you could try corylopsis, a cousin of the witch hazel, with similar early scented flowers on bare wood. Another deciduous shrub with small yellow hanging flowers in early spring is stachyurus praecox. It is hardier and doesn’t mind a bit of damp shady ground.

Amplify the effect of these shrubs with broadleaves like sarcococca (white scented flowers from early winter) or garrya eliptica (best on a west wall). Under-plant them with a carpet of Erica carnea, punctuated with coloured stems of cornus and salix for a brighter winter garden.

Merry Christmas!Sheila DrummondPortland Garden Design07905 [email protected]

During 2015 local Church of Scotland Minister Rev Barry Hughes has set himself a challenge – to run a marathon every month during the year. Barry has run 9 marathons previously and has decided to do this challenge in order to raise money for the Peebles Branch of the MS Society Scotland. “I have close family connections with MS and I know the Peebles branch of the MS Society does great work in supporting local MS sufferers and their families, so this is a great cause” said Barry. “The first marathon will be on New Year’s Day in Liverpool and the remaining marathons are in locations ranging from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Luxembourg”. All the marathons are officially organised events, with the exception of August, where Barry is looking to run a ‘local’ marathon,

probably starting at the head of the Manor Valley and running 26.2 miles from there.

Barry’s Just Giving sponsorship page can be found at www.justgiving.com/account/your-pages/Barry-Hughes7 and all sponsorship will be very welcome and gratefully received.

Our established Friday Drop-in sessions (1-4pm ) for active semi-retired and retired ladies and gentlemen has attracted new members over the autumn period and there are plans in progress to deliver an interesting programme of events over the winter. Congratulations must go to our Walking Football team who staged a match against a team of like minded souls from Midlothian on 31st October and gained an unprecedented amount of media attention into the bargain! This was a great achievement for the group who only started playing the game at the beginning of the summer and although suffering a defeat at the hands of their visitors, played with a fantastic sporting attitude and helped to make the day a sporting and social success. Many thanks to Lynne Marshall and Amanda Renwick from the SBC Community Capacity Building Team for cajoling, encouraging and supporting the team, the Alec Lucas Trust for sponsoring them, and Forsyth’s butchers for providing the refreshments. It is hoped to have a return match in the not too distant future while at the same time it is hoped that other teams within the Borders will take up the mantle and benefit from the positive health and social attributes this sport can bring. If you would like to join the Friday Group but not necessarily take part in walking football there are other activities of interest on offer including indoor bowls, indoor curling, badminton, pool, darts as well as a wide variety of board games. Next summer two girls from Peebles High School will be venturing into Africa to spend a year as volunteer workers through the charity Project Trust, an education charity specialising in overseas volunteering placements for school-leavers. To find out more you can check out their website http://projecttrust.org.uk/

Claire Lee will be teaching in a local school in South Africa, while Susanne Krabbendam will be teaching in Ghana. It is important for volunteers to teach in local schools in Africa, to improve the children’s spoken English. This will help the kid’s in their further education and career. They are already looking forward to learning about the people, languages and cultures of their host country.

Claire says ‘Being away for a whole year will allow me to really get to know the country and the people there. I will be able to experience Christmas, Birthdays, Easter and other celebrations in a completely different country.’

Susanne says ‘I am aware that going away for a year will be really challenging, but I think the experience will be one of a lifetime’

Both girls need to raise £5900 for their years volunteering. As part of this they will be holding a joint ‘Pop up Charity Shop’ in the St Andrews Leckie Hall on the 6th December from 9.00 onwards, where they will be selling clothes, crafts, teas and coffees. Other fundraising events will follow and the girls are keen to hear from any local businesses who might be able to offer them sponsorship. They can be contacted on [email protected] and [email protected] and can be found on Facebook at Claire’s year in South Africa and Susanne’s gap year to Ghana.

After a bad spell at the end of September, where the 1stXV The 1stXV continue in the top half of BT National League 1, after wins against Dundee High and Jedforest, followed by losses against top three sides Selkirk and Watsonians. Unfortunately the side also went out of the BT Cup, coming up against the on-form side from League 2, Musselburgh. The ‘Seconds’ meanwhile continue to dominate BT Reserve League East 1 and currently sit 7 points clear at the top. An impressive statistic is that they have taken seven ‘4 try’ bonus points from their first eight matches.

In the youth section, the Colts are part of a four way fight for fourth place in the Border Semi-

Junior League, while the Under 16’s have re-started their league campaign with a good win away to Selkirk, after an absence of matches over the last month or two. The Piranhas meanwhile are now on their winter break, are will not start back until mid February. The younger agegroup however (P1’s and 2’s) have arranged a Winter Camp, and continue indoors at the High School during this time.

The High School have a full fixture list between now and the Christmas holidays, and the S1’s, S2’s and Under 15’s will be playing on Saturday mornings against schools from the Borders and Lothians. The School also have the small matter of the Brewin Dolphin Borders & East Lothian Under 18 Regional Plate Final against Earlston to come, with the winners progressing through to the national phase of the competition.

For 1stXV home matches, the Club are now offering Supporters Lunches, consisting of the following:- Pre-match drinks, Three Course Lunch, Entry to Game and Match Programme, for the price of

£30 per person. Individuals or groups can be catered for, and further details can be found by contacting James Blacklaw on 07786 381205 or [email protected].

As ever, full details of all matches at all levels, including kick off times, can be found on the Club’s website – www.peeblesrfc.org

The Club would like to wish all players, members, volunteers, supporters and sponsors a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
