DEADLINE FOR JULY ISSUE - 18th JUNE

It doesn’t seem that long since the flags and decorations were coming down after Beltane 2013 but, with the announcement of the Court in mid May, Peebles now knows who all the main Principals are for the 2014 festival and Peebles Life would like to begin by wishing Queen Alice and her court a fabulous, fun-filled and memorable Beltane week, along with the Cornet and his Lass, the Crowning Lady and the Wardens of both Neidpath and the Cross Kirk.

Whilst there can be no doubt that the week from the 15th June is the most anticipated in Peebles, there is plenty to do throughout the month, with the final meeting this season of the Pensioner’s Association, events at St Ronan’s Visitor Centre, exhibitions at the Tweeddale Museum, details of a meeting about Resilient Communities and an invitation to join a forum discussing the future of the town. Looking further ahead, the Eastgate Theatre introduce their summer programme and the MS Society put an early date in your diary for July. We are also delighted to include reports from Peebles Cricket Club, the Highland Games Association and the Silver Band. Finally, Peebles in Bloom have shared details of their annual competition to give you plenty of time to get your garden into shape and take part.

Amongst our regular features, the Big Issue returns to a subject that has been covered before, countryside access. With the warmer weather we all want to get into the great outdoors and the Big Issue looks at ways we can do this without compromising other activities or our own safety. We also have our regular gardening column and reports from both the Community Centre and The Bridge. Our political column comes from our newest local Councillor, Keith Cockburn, and, for the Peebles Portrait this month, Charles met with David Bon, perhaps more recognisable in one of his many guises for Shakespeare at Traquair!

We have a number of groups and organisations who regularly make use of Peebles Life to alert the town to what they are doing, free of charge, and we would love to add to their number. Big IssueAt last, in theory, June is here, heralding the arrival of summer. The days are at their longest, the sun is supposed to shine and we all welcome the opportunity to make more of the great outdoors. Plans are made to cycle up the Manor Valley, taking a picnic to break the journey, to camp on the Meldons or to walk the dogs further afield than Hay Lodge or Victoria Parks. Indeed some of us will already have enjoyed some of these pursuits on one of the warm days in May.

One such person chose to walk their dog(s) in the fields at Cademuir Farm in late April and, given the open space and lack of traffic, so dangerous to pets, allowed their dog off the lead, despite signs asking that dogs be kept on their lead at lambing time. Sadly the result was the death and serious injury of more than half a dozen lambs, not to mention the mis-mothering of other lambs within the field and the stress to the milking ewes. This is the third attack on this farm alone with the last two years. On another local farm, walkers came between a ewe and her twin lambs, scattering all three in different directions to escape the danger, risking the ewe refusing to take one or both of the lambs back, particularly in the early days when the development of maternal bonding, vital to the lambs’ survival, may be broken.

The problem here is that these are animals, with all their inherent instincts. A dog will instinctively want to chase anything running away and whilst most will simply chase until they catch up and get bored, others get caught up in the moment and do what comes naturally to their canine ancestry. Sheep and cattle are herd animals that will automatically flock together when faced with a perceived danger and then will generally flee together or, if unable, will turn and protect the herd as best as possible. For all the centuries of domestication, these animals are really not that far from the predator attacks on the plains of Africa, shown in so many wildlife programmes and, if a herd of cows with young calves feels threatened, they will respond

aggressively.

One of the most common likes amongst our Peebles Portraits is the ease of access to the beautiful countryside we have on our doorstep and we are indeed fortunate not to have to travel far to enjoy the hills, trees and rivers that make our landscape so special. However, the countryside is also a place of productivity. In 2010, agriculture directly employed 6% (2500 people) of the workforce in the Scottish Borders although if these figures were to include total labour, including the self-employed, this figure rises to almost 4000 individuals, with only Health and Social Work and Retail providing more employment in this region. Nationally, the total income from farming contributes £665 million to the economy.

The challenge we all face is how to combine the desire for leisure pursuits with requirements of business, throwing in the added unpredictability of livestock to the mix. In most other industries it would be difficult for an outsider to enter the premises and rearrange the contents of a filing cabinet, however, in farming, it is simple to leave a gate open, frustrating animal husbandry. Few of us would go into a factory and deliberately damage the end product but, as the case at Cademuir demonstrates, it is perfectly possible to do so in the open countryside.

As always, it comes back to personal responsibility. We all need to be familiar with the guidelines set down in the Outdoor Access Code, both the more obvious such as leaving gates as we find them and avoiding fields housing calves, but also the lesser known good practices such as clearing up after our dogs as we do in town to prevent the spread of neosporosis (causes abortion in cattle) and sarcocystosis (causes neurological disease in sheep). If we take time to consider others then hopefully we can all continue to make the most of the countryside both as a productive and pleasurable environment.

Once again this summer Peebles Community Council will confer Peebles in Bloom Awards to those residents and business folk who have created beautiful gardens and floral displays in recognition of the time and effort that has gone into helping make Peebles such an attractive town.

Community Councillors will walk around Peebles in July and nominate the best gardens and (in the case of business premises) floral displays within the following categories:

• Large garden• Medium garden• Small garden• Courtyard garden• Business premises• Best street• All year round garden• Secret garden• Vegetable garden or allotment

The secret garden is a plot not easily seen from the road so we depend on folk nominating their own or someone else’s garden. In addition we invite people to nominate their own or someone else’s vegetable plot or allotment. (See contact details below.)

Following a second tour of the nominated gardens the list is whittled down to a more manageable number.

Official Judges will tour the town inspecting the gardens on the final list on 1st and 4th August, and the presentation of awards and trophies will take place in the Burgh Hall on Thursday 21st August.

We are also holding a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition for children of Primary School age. (Children who think their sunflower could be biggest and best should contact us before 1st August.)

The pot is surely one of the first things a human being ever made; that, and a pointy stick for killing large scary animals for dinner. In my imagination, the earliest people were out there wandering around; looking at plants, wondering what would make a nice salad to go with roast meat. If you ever thought about how people found out what plants were good to eat, the answer is trial and error.

Eventually, mankind found out more about plants for food, for medicines, and for dyes and perfumes. They began to travel from place to place to collect foodstuffs like berries, seeds, nuts and roots. There were no permanent settlements at first; everyone and everything decamped. People crossed raging rivers and climbed high mountains to get to fertile valleys where useful and tasty plants grew in the summer. This was difficult for a lot of reasons: there were wild animals who were hunting them, and other people they met on the way were not always friendly either.

I would like to have been there when somebody picked up some seeds or nuts and decided that it would be a lot simpler to take these seeds and grow them nearer the winter camp. When they got back, because there was no

cleared land to plant in, somebody used a pot. So that’s how civilisation began – with a plant in a pot.

Pot making is a cultural development that has helped archaeologists to tell the story of early man from the smallest pieces unearthed all over the world. Pots can be simple and sturdy or embellished with colours and designs that make them works of art. Using pots has changed the way we live and, in the case of the garden, it has allowed us to propagate and distribute plants by the millions.

Pots can make a garden possible where there is no ground; for example, on balconies or rooftops. Pots enable us to grow things where prevailing conditions would not allow; for instance, in the desert or where the soil is not acid. Pots allow us to grow crops under cover that are too tender

to put outside in our cooler, wetter climate. We also use them to decorate paving or decking and every year thousands of people plant up pots with summer colour.

Many small deciduous shrubs, conifers and grasses will do well in containers; for example, dwarf forms of acer palmatum, pinus mugo pumilio, small kinds of miscanthus and even hybrid tea roses. Small clematis, exotic climbers like rhodochiton or passiflora, runner beans and peas will all grow in a big container but remember to water and feed them.

Check the roots of permanent planting at the end of the season and, if pot bound, either plant out in the garden ground or re-pot in a larger pot with fresh compost. Watch out for pests like vine weevils and remember to stand the pots on little feet to assist drainage, especially in the winter.

Sunday The Inaugural Service at the Cross Kirk5.45pm the procession consisting of Principals, the Beltane Committee, Peebles Silver Band, Peebles Pipe Band and various organisations start at the War Memrorial Quadrangle and head to the Cross Kirk.

6.00pm the Warden of the Cross Kirk is installed and then conducts the Inaugural Service. Once the service is over the procession head back to the Quadrangle and disperse to look forward to the week ahead.

Wednesday Cornet Installation6.15 pm the installation of the Cornet, his Lass takes place at the Parish Church steps.

Riding of the MarchesAll duly installed, the Cornet, Supporters and followers mount horses and proceed to ˜Ride the Marches”. Each year around 250+ horse riders can be seen enjoying the spectacle that is commonly known as the ˜Ride Out”.

Neidpath Ceremony7.15 pm the Warden of Neidpath is installed at Neidpath Castle.

8.30 pm ˜Fording of the Tweed” above Fotheringham Bridge in Hay Lodge Park.

9.00 pm The riders all head up to the north side of the golf course for the annual horse race.

Grand Procession and Retreat11.15am The Grand Procession, led by the Cornet takes in most of the major town routes. Supported by Peebles Silver Band, Peebles Ex-Servicemens Pipe Band and other pipe, brass and cultural bands, the procession of Queen and Court, Officials and decorated lorries makes its way through the town streets.

7.00pm Beat Retreat on Peebles High Street. The salute is taken by the Chairman of the Beltane Festival.

Peebles Silver Bandwww.peeblessilverband.comIt is with great sadness that we record the death of that great servant of the Band, Dougie Mackie. Dougie was a member of the Band for nearly 63 years and we were delighted, in January 2012, to present him with a certificate from the Scottish Brass Band Association marking his 60 years as an active member of the Silver Band. During most of that time Dougie played cornet and as a natural chorus man his preferred position was among the back row cornets playing either repiano or second cornet. Apart from his playing activities he had been a committee member for many years and librarian for 30 years. This in itself was quite some achievement as being librarian is an essential but ultimately thankless task. Dougie also spent many years researching and compiling a two volume history of the Band and this, undoubtedly, will be his lasting legacy. His cheeky smile, sense of humour and his role as “Chorus Man” in the Band’s many singsongs will be sorely missed but not forgotten.

Congratulations to Band member, and horn player, Kevin Smith who has been announced as Cornet-Elect for 2014. The present Cornet, Daniel Williamson, is also a member of the Band and also plays in the horn section. Although the Band is proud to have two Cornets arise from its ranks the downside is that we will be short of not one but two horn players for the Beltane. Either we will have to place a moratorium on any more members of the Band becoming Cornet or else the whole Band will have to take to horse! Good luck Kevin: “safe oot, safe in”.

June is a busy month for the Band and we look forward once again to playing an integral role in the Beltane festivities. Our congratulations go to all the Principals and let’s hope that the sun shines on all of us.

Last years event was slightly hampered by the damp weather however the quality of the running was excellent with many local athletes performing well.

This year sees the introduction of another event, a 90m Sprint for runners under 16 years of age residing in Peeblesshire. This race is sponsored by St. Johnstone footballer Steven Maclean who himself has an interest in developing local athletic talent. It is hoped youngsters in the region may try out running for the first time in front of a large crowd.

The popular 75m "Dash" for local sports clubs continues this year with prizes for the first three over the line. Anyone interested in competing this event should contact Les

Shortreed on 721666.

The above races combined with the normal programme of events makes the Beltane Sports one of the busiest on the "Borders circuit". The main event of this packed programme will be the 110m Beltane Sprint with the sprinter competing for a first prize of £500.

The day is always interesting with many local athletes participating and if the sports is an event you have not seen before why not try them this year you will not be disappointed.

The May meeting was held on Wednesday, 21 May 2014, when we were delighted to welcome Stuart Laidlaw who owns the Dam Good Jam Company. Stuart gave us some background on the reasons for starting his company and then went on to talk about the ingredients in his current range of chilli jams and the special limited editions that he has made over the years. With the Dam Good Jam Company’s products available from Carlisle to Dundee and many places in between, it is clear that his range of products continue to be very much in demand. I would like to thank Stuart for giving us such an interesting talk and for bringing along the chilli jams for the members to try. Special thanks also for my jar of the wonderful Grapefruit, lime and habanero chilli marmalade, which I will savour as it is one of the last of this limited edition. I would like to wish Stuart continued success and look forward to his next limited

edition chilli jam!

FormatBackground exhibition Two scheduled workshops, two rounds per workshop, covering the same six distinct subjects: education, child care, employment, tourism, youth facilities, health services . Attendees can decide which of two workshops to attend, and to address two topics per workshop.

Each circle will have at its service a facilitator knowledgeable in the particular topic under discussion (who will set the scene, and then provide information as and where called upon to do so), and a note taker / rapporteur.

After two rounds have been completed, the rapporteurs will report back to all participants on the views expressed on each discussion topic. This will be followed by a short debate. Attendees will be encouraged to continue the debate informally after the closure of that workshop – over a cup of tea or a bowl of soup.

Spring into SummerThe weather is at last warming up and when that happens everyone has a good look around their garden and decides it is time to take action. However not everyone is prepared for the rigours of gardening. Every year I hear of people going out on the first sunny day and spending a good few hours bending and lifting and boom.... sore backs, tight necks and shoulders, stiff and unable to move the following day follow. Ideally when exercising you would make sure your body was warmed up and mobile before starting to exercise but when gardening this is not always the case. So here are few simple tips to help you when you are tackling your garden this spring/summer.

WEEDING - bending forward for long periods of time can put strain on your lower back and make the back of your thighs feel tight. Try to

bend your knees or ideally kneel on a pad or use a long handled weeding claw.

PRUNING - when lifting your arms up you can cause tension in the neck arms and shoulders. If you can stand up on a secure platform or use long handles and try to keep shoulders arms, neck as relaxed as possible.

LIFTING - When picking up something heavy or just picking up, face it, bend your knees and then bring it as close to you as possible, try not to twist especially when lifting weight.

RAKING/DIGGING - try not lean too far forward, shorter handles will make you do this.

After a long day gardening try to stretch and relax, a warm bath can work wonders.

Peebles Community Centre

Here we are in June already! You are no doubt thinking ahead to your summer holidays, and before that the 2014 Beltane Festival as the annual round of Border Common Ridings and events get under way in June and July. Peebles Community Centre will still be functioning over the summer months and there is always room for new bookings, especially at weekends. So if you are looking for somewhere to hold an event over the summer, from small informal groups to larger events such as christening parties and even wedding receptions, please give the Community Centre a call, it might just be what you are looking for!

Adult Drop-InPeebles Community Centre recently started what is basically a youth club for adults! Held

on Friday afternoons from 1-4pm, it is open to men and women of all ages. The more active are invited to try their hand at indoor bowls, table tennis, walking football and indoor curling. If that sounds too sporty there are table games such as chess, draughts, backgammon, scrabble, cards and dominoes. For the less competitive amongst us there are also jigsaws and puzzles. This is also an ideal opportunity for locals and people new to the area to meet new friends over a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit!

After just a few weeks we have a nucleus of regulars who will be happy to make you feel welcome. We welcome suggestions of further activities you would be interested in seeing, such as crafts or possibly a book club. Mens sheds are gaining in popularity and we have an outside area where anyone who likes making things or working with their hands can get involved in small team projects. We don’t expect you to stay for the whole 3hr session, you are welcome to come and go whenever it suits you. Perhaps you would be interested in attending before picking up children/grandchildren from school or after another activity. Last month we shared our 5 steps to reduce your food waste and this time we would like to help you with Step 4: Store your food in the right place.Here are some tips to make your food last longer:

1. Fruit and vegetables should be kept on the fridge (yes, including apples!) except for bananas, pineapples, potatoes and onions. Keep them in their packaging until you decide to eat them, it will keep them fresher for longer.

2. Store bananas separately from the rest of your fruit as they emit a gas that quickens the ripening process.

3. Don’t put your bread in the fridge; it will keep better in a bread bin or a cupboard. You can also freeze it.

4. Once opened, cheese and ham should be kept well wrapped or in an airtight container.

5. To store fragile fresh herbs (chervil, chives, coriander, dill, parsley and tarragon but not basil) remove herbs from packaging. Wrap them in kitchen paper and sprinkle cold water all over to lightly dampen (not saturate). Wrap in cling �lm and store in the fridge. Can last up to three weeks.

Recipe from Val at the SunflowerRoasted Beetroot, Sweet Potato

& Goat’s Cheese FrittataIngredients Serves 4~ 6 500g beetroot peeled500g sweet potato peeled2tbsp rapeseed oil 1 bulb garlic 6 slices goat’s cheese200ml double cream 2 tbsp chopped chives 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley¼ tsp ground black pepper¼ tsp Maldon salt

Method Pre heat the oven gas mark 4 180C.Peel the sweet potato & beetroot. Slice with a mandoline or a sharp knife as thin as you can & keep them both separate. Place the beetroot and garlic into the flan dish and toss with one tbsp of the oil and roast for 10 minutes. Add the sweet potato into the same dish for another 10 minutes with the remaining oil & mix well. Remove the garlic after 15 minutes and allow to cool, give the vegetables a stir. Once cool enough to touch squeeze out the roasted garlic & mix with the cream, herbs, eggs & seasoning. Remove the vegetables from the oven, pour the egg mixture over then arrange the goat’s cheese on top and bake for 30mimutes until firm and the cheese is golden.Enjoy with a crisp green salad.

We look to enable local people to gain access to decision-making processes which affect their lives and their communities.

CALL FOR VIEWS ON PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE PAYMENT (PIP)Over the last couple of years the Welfare Reform Committee’s ‘Your Say’ initiative has enabled the Committee to take evidence from those directly affected by welfare reform. The personal stories the Committee has heard from individuals about their experiences of the Work Capability Assessment, ‘bedroom tax’ and Employment and Support Allowance have provided a valuable insight into the impact of welfare reform on the people of Scotland.

The opportunity is being offered for individuals to share with the Committee their experiences of Personal Independence Payments (PIP). This includes new claimants and those who are changing from Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to PIP. The Committee also wants to hear from individuals and organisations that support PIP claimants.

They are keen to learn about any aspect of your experience of PIP including:

• The PIP claim form • The PIP assessment process, including where your

assessment was conducted • The Department of Work and Pensions decision on

your PIP claim and payment of PIP

We couldn’t provide this service if it wasn’t for our wonderful volunteer drivers who give freely of their time for the benefit of others and you could become part of that! We are looking to increase our driver pool so, if you have some spare time and enjoy driving, why not consider becoming one of our volunteer drivers? You will have the chance to drive for local community groups, using our 15-seater wheelchair accessible minibus, or individuals, with our 6-seater wheelchair accessible community car. We will provide you with appropriate training and support and out-of-pocket expenses and you will be free to drive as often or as little as you wish. Half-day training courses take place regularly. This Summer Make It EastgateSummer is here and this season at the Eastgate Theatre, as well as the term time workshops in singing, dance, art and drama, there are arts, dance, drama and comedy workshops during the school summer holidays.

Aspiring Oscar winners are invited to the Craft Theatre School Summer School from Monday 7 to Friday 11 July from 10am to 3pm. Learn scriptwork and improvisation, play drama games and then perform on Friday, all for £60.

Budding stand-ups or Mr Beans are invited to polish their skills in a three day Comedy Masterclass from Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 July, 10am – 4pm. Age 11 – 16, £50 for three days.

From Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 July artist Anna Nicholson will be getting everyone very messy as they learn to print on everything from animal masks to jelly. The one hour workshops begin at 10am and cost just £5.

From Monday 28 July to Wednesday 30 July, from 10 am – 12 noon, Jo Powell will show everyone over 5 how to create fabulous Fish on Sticks and paint in Matisse style. All for £7 a day.

3 to 5 year olds are invited to enjoy summer workshops with songs, fun and games all about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Let’s Pretend workshops are Monday 4 – Friday 8 August from 10 – 10.45am and cost £5 for one day or £22 for all five.

Weekends in the Borders just got a whole afternoon longer and next term young artists and performers, aged 5 – 12, are invited to join The Escape Club which meets every Friday afternoon from 2 – 4pm. Members are invited to enjoy backstage performance workshops and art classes making everything from giant food to spectacular costumes. The Escape Club is on Fridays 22 August – 10 October, 2 – 4pm Tickets: £80 for 8 Fridays. Lunch box lunches available from 1pm.

I have enjoyed my first eight months as Councillor for Tweeddale West. There have been many new things for me to learn, and many new people for me to get to know.

I have enjoyed the various events I have been invited to, and I have enjoyed being able to provide a voice for my constituents at Full Council, Area Forums, Committees, Community Councils, and other meetings. I have also found my surgeries and case work very rewarding, and I hope that I have been able to help some of you.

As a new Councillor, I was impressed with the great camaraderie between Councillors. My own group showed me a great welcome, and have been fantastic, but I have also received support across the political spectrum at the Council, and it is much appreciated.

Yes, the learning curve has been steep, and there have been some controversial debates to be involved in since last October, such as the discussions in Council over the new waste strategy, the budget, the withdrawal of the Police Traffic Wardens, alcohol bye-laws and the asymmetric week. I knew that coming in as a Councillor mid-term wouldn’t be too easy, but I hope that I’m beginning to fit in, and being able to contribute to the effective running of the Council.

I’m proud to be a Borderer, Scottish and British, and as a proud member of the Scottish Conservative Party I will be voting No in the Independence Referendum on September 18th 2014.

I believe that Scotland is better served by remaining as an important part of a strong United Kingdom. I think that we are already in a very good position, in having powers available to Scotland through the Scottish Government,

but also having the support of a strong United Kingdom Government. I think that the United Kingdom’s economic recovery proves this point. With the help, planning and support of the United Kingdom Government, we have all worked very hard, to climb back from the precarious position in which the recession placed us. The economy continues to perform strongly, has increased 3% over the last year, output is now close to regaining it’s pre-crisis level, 700,000 more people are in work, wages are rising and inflation is close to it’s target. In short the economy has started to head back to normal.

I don’t think that the SNP Scottish Government in Holyrood have put forward a sound enough case to the Scottish people explaining why independence is so much better than what we already enjoy. They have not given a detailed enough plan to the Scottish people, and many key questions have not been answered clearly.

I understand that some people on both sides of the debate will have already made up their minds, but I would say to any person as yet undecided “Have you been convinced 100% that independence is the best thing for Scotland, if not, how can you vote Yes?” If Scotland becomes independent from the United Kingdom, it will not be able to rejoin the rest of the UK at a later date, if independence does not live up to be, all that the SNP say it will be.

I am looking forward to the Referendum, as I am very keen to find out how the Scottish people truly feel about independence. I also feel that the question over independence has had a destabilising effect on Scotland, and has held the Scottish recovery from the recession back. I look forward to a definitive, decisive resolution to the question posed, once and for all.

Peebles PortraitsDavid BonFor me, one of the highlights of the summer in Peebles is the annual Shakespeare at Traquair performances. They have, over the years, become an important part of the cultural life of the town, so it seemed appropriate this month to sit down with David Bon who, though an old hand at Traquair, is directing for the first time this year.

We meet in the bustling and busy lounge at the Tontine, which I discover is another Peebles institution which has played a major part in David’s life. David is not a gutterbluid, having been born in Falkirk, however he moved to the town when he was 5 and attended Halyrude, and then went on to the High School.

He did not really get involved in the theatre during his teenage years, though he does point out that it was whilst at school he began to develop his lifelong love with Shakespeare. He remembers having a discussion with his then English Teacher Ian Jenkins, where he, with typical teenage arrogance, tried to dismiss the merits of Romeo and Juliet. Mr Jenkins engaged him on the subject, and as a result had a profound impact on the rest of his life.

Following High School, David went to University at St Andrew’s, which he found to be a little stifling. Though he enjoyed the town and academic experience, the student cohort, made up mainly of public school educated youngsters, was more of a challenge. “It was a great place to be, but I must admit you were more likely to find me in the pub with the locals than mixing with the other students.”

It was whilst at University, on his trips home that he started to get involved in the theatre and, with his brother Martyn, jointly directed a play with Tweed Theatre called Cutting a Rug. He also worked at the Tontine in a range of roles throughout his university holidays, starting as a Kitchen Porter, and then moving front of house as a waiter, porter and barman.

David met his future wife Julie whilst working at the Tontine. When he left University he went to work for one of Scotland’s major banking institutions, and, after marrying Julie, they moved to Lincoln, to allow Julie to study for her post graduate degree.

They soon wanted to move back to Scotland, and David was able to get a transfer back with the bank to Edinburgh, and they set up home in Livingston, however after the birth of their first daughter, Rachel, they decided to move back to Peebles, “When you have a young family there can be few better places

to bring them up that Peebles”.

Back in the town David started to get involved in Shakespeare at Traquair. In 2007 he played Ferdinand in the Tempest and, with one year off, has appeared in every production since. He jokes that he is in danger of being typecast as a homicidal maniac (there are plenty to choose from in Shakespeare) and in Macbeth he played Seyton, which involved killing nine people a night!

Though he is entirely self-taught, David’s love and understanding of the theatre is self-evident and it gives him the opportunity “to do something completely different from the day job”. This year he was asked by the committee to take on the role of Director, and he has been working since the end of last year on the development of the performance of “A Comedy of Errors” which will take place at the end of May and beginning of June.

When I ask David about the person he most admires in the town his thoughts quickly return to Ian Jenkins the English teacher at the high school who kindled his love of Shakespeare “Mr Jenkins always had time to engage and enthuse students, and not just in English, he engaged us in Politics, and, though I did not agree with him often, I was so proud when he went on to become our first MSP”

When asked to highlight something people would not know about him, he mentions the fact that as a youngster he was a talented Cello player, and played in the Borders Symphony Orchestra for three years.

Turning to why he enjoys living in Peebles he highlights the community atmosphere, and the fact that people here still look out for one another. His dislike is one that is shared by many of the people we interview, and it is the infrastructure issue “I am delighted so many people want to come and live in the town, but the council must invest in the infrastructure to allow this to happen properly.” He is particularly keen to see the new bridge built.

When not involved in the Theatre David and his family are heavily involved in fundraising for The Margaret Kerr Unit at BGH. David’s mother, June, was one of the first patients to use the unit, and since her death David has done a range of fundraising events including the Deerstalker and Great Scottish Run and is organising a charity football tournament.

As most of Peebles Life readers will be aware, the Peebles’ Games were cancelled last year due to Haylodge Park being unavailable. This year, the Games committee are confident that Haylodge Park will be fully restored and available for use before September. A site meeting will take place 4 to 6 weeks before the Games date, at which point the go-ahead will, hopefully, be confirmed. In the unlikely event that permission will not be given, then the committee will turn to “plan B” and are determined that, to ensure continuity of all the voluntary helpers, etc. that the Games will take place.

Given that the original event was organises over 40 years ago by Peebles’ shopkeepers and businesses to attract visitors to the town, Sunday was the only suitable day. This year the Games will take place on Saturday 6th September. The move to a Saturday is seen as being more socially acceptable, allowing

competitors, stallholders and visitors, etc., to enjoy the day knowing that tomorrow is not a working day! It should be noted that nearly all highland games take place on a Saturday.

This year, in addition to the very popular Pipe Band, Heavy Events, Highland Dancing competitions, Whisky Tasting and Haggis Hurling Competitions are being introduced plus return of the Tug o’ War Competition. No event would be complete without the varied and enticing food outlets, stalls and fairgrounds rides, etc.

At the end of the day, after assembly of the massed pipe bands and presentation of prizes and trophies, the pipe bands march and play as they parade down to the High Street, entertaining the visitors and townsfolk. A final trophy is warded to the band judged best for Dress and Deportment.

County were relieved to hear that they had survived to fight another season in Division 5 of the East of Scotland Cricket Association. They finished two places above the drop zone but, due to an administrative error, failed to play their final home game. A re-configuration of the League threatened their status in Division 5,but this has not come to pass.

The season got off to a promising start on the 26th April when they won their opening game away from home by 50 runs against Edinburgh Academicals. This was a thrilling, competitive game in which County scored over 200 runs (not achieved for some time)and, more importantly, it was the first time in historical memory that they had won their first league game of the season.

After a shaky start County put 221 on the board. There was a major innings from Pete Caddick 75 and vital late order contributions from Slater, Burns, Pace and Rimmer. Emboldened perhaps by their liquid tea, Accies attacked right from the start and were soon scoring at an alarming rate. Three brilliant pieces of fielding from Cormack, Slater and Webb wrested the initiative back to County before the next onslaught began.

County’s fielding again came to the rescue,and good catches from Buckingham and Murray stopped the Accies dead in their tracks. They were not to prevail again as Peebles policy of containment won the day.

The following week County were brought back to earth sustaining a five wicket home defeat at the hands of Glenrothes. Batting first County struggled to build a big total. There were two suicidal run-outs, but a suspiciously strong Rothes team bowled with relentless accuracy and Peebles had no real answer. Once again Caddick was the man in form, and his innings of 52 catapults him to the top of the league’s batting performers with over a hundred runs so early in the season.

The scoreline somewhat flatters Rothes whilst belying County’s efforts. Had one important catch gone to hand, then Rothes would have been chasing nearly 40 runs with only 3 wickets remaining.

The outcome could have been different.

Maxwell banished the disappointment of being run-out by taking three wickets in an excellent, economical spell.

Game number 3 against Drummond Trinity was cancelled due to rain.

The Club bids farewell to and thanks Barry Sheppard for his transformative work on the square and pavilion. He is leaving for la belle France, so we collectively wish Barry, Lucy, Samand Ben tout le bonheur!
