Meals are available for delivery to the homes of those who may be com-ing home from the hospital, or who are just struggling in some way. If you or a parishioner you know needs a little help from our kitchen, contact the Parish Office and leave a message for Patty Schwerin, and she will get in touch with our meal team and delivery team. Just reheat and relax, and know that you are loved!—To make our frozen homemade meals more available to you or your family members, you may stop by our table at the St. Catherine Food Bank on the first and third Saturdays during December from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.

FAMILY HOLY HOUR — Every 3rd Monday of the month from 9:45-10:45am. We will be using the chapel at St. Pius X school building. This is a great oppor-tunity to show your children the power of Jesus in the Eucharist and spend time in prayer together. Please join us on:

December 21, 2020 & January 17, 2021

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) Our program offers an oppor tunity to come togeth-er in a small group setting to learn more about our faith. The sessions prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with our ques-tions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. We anticipate sessions to begin in September and will be held in St. Pius X school building. For information, call Patty Schwerin at 412-563-0858 or email [email protected]

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” "The Word became Flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory: The glory of an only Son coming from the Father, filled with enduring love." (John 1:14)

* * * The actual date of Christ's birth is unknown. The Gospels do not record it and there is not any early tradition to identify it. Scholars identify the approximate year as sometime between 8 - 5 BC and the season as probably early spring. The feast day was placed where it was, in all likelihood, to supplant the practice of the winter solstice festival among pagan converts by pointing to Christ as the true light who comes into the world. The Western Church emphasizes the celebration of the Nativity or Birth of Jesus on December 25, while the Eastern Church celebrates His manifestation to the Magi on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6.

PRE-BAPTISM CLASS is required for fir st-time par-ents. Parents are asked to call Patty Schwerin at 412-563-0858 to register and arrange for a scheduled time for this class. BAPTISM SCHEDULING—At the present time, Bap-tisms will be scheduled only one child/family at a time as advised by the Diocese. We will be able to accommodate the number of people allotted by the current mandated requirements for capacity for the church where the Bap-tism is to take place. Social distancing must be observed and face masks are required. Since we have 4 deacons, baptism will now be scheduled on Sundays at the 3 loca-tions—SCS, RES, SPX— after the last Sunday Mass.

“O” ANTIPHONS The Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accom-pany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient bibli-cal imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testa-ment to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeat-ed use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. (usccb.org) In Latin , the first letters of the titles, read in reverse order, form the acrostic Ero cras, which translates to “I will be with you tomorrow.” (The Magnificat Advent Companion) Dec. 17: O Sapientia (Wisdom) O wisdom, you came forth from the mouth of the Most High, and reached from end to end, and disposed of all things sweetly and mightily: come and teach us the way of prudence. Amen. Dec. 18: O Adonai (Lord) O Adonai, and leader of the house of Israel, you appeared to Moses in the flame of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: come, and with an outstretched arm, redeem us. Amen. Dec. 19: O Radix Jesse (Roof of Jesse) O Root of Jesse, who stood as a sign for the people, before you kings shall remain silent, and to you the Gentiles shall make sup-plication: come to deliver us, and delay not. Amen. Dec. 20: O Clavis David (Key of David) O Key of David, and scepter of the house of Israel: you open and no one shuts; you shut and no one opens. Come and lead forth from his prison the captive sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death. Amen. Dec. 21: O Oriens (Dayspring) O Dayspring, brightness of eternal Light and Sun of Justice: come and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. Amen. Dec. 22: O Rex Gentium (King of Nations) O King of nations, and their Desired, the Cornerstone who make all one: come and save our race, whom you formed out of clay. Amen. Dec. 23: O Emmanuel (God-with-us) O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the Desire of all nations and their Savior: come and save us, O Lord our God! Amen.

During the month of December, our united parish of St. Teresa of Kolkata celebrated two special days. On December 9, we remembered the dedication of St. Pius X Church, and on De-cember 10, the universal Church celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Loreto. We ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Saint Pius X, all of our patron saints, and all those in heaven as we continue to build God's kingdom on Earth.
