This Month’s Liturgy at a Glance September is a month of new beginnings after the more relaxed pace of the summer. The read-ings of these Sundays, in Ordinary Time, con-tinue marking the paths of Christian life. Above all, they speak of humility, renunciation, re-pentance, the abundant generosity and mercy of God, fidelity, and the call to committed action. Christians are called to the logic of God’s gener-osity, which does not resemble the mercan-tilism of this world. This month has important liturgical moments. Labor Day is celebrated in the first weekend, which although a civic holiday, it provides a good time for catechesis about the creative mis-sion of God and the collaboration of human hands. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on the 14th, with an invita-tion to reflect on the salvation that comes to us by a sign that sometimes is so familiar; it can go unnoticed in all its deep meaning. We also have two important Marian feast days. On September 8 we celebrate the Nativity of Mary, which adopts different name in different places, such as Our Lady of Charity, Guadalupe, Nuria, and Regla; and the memorial of Our La-dy of Sorrow is on the 15th. Lastly, this year, the Church will celebrate Cate-chetical Sunday on September 15. This is great opportunity to recognize those who with so much faith, generosity, and dedication offer their service of catechesis in the parishes, and to encourage everyone to consider their voca-tion to be announcer and echo of the Good News.

Eventos Parroquiales

Un Vistazo a la Liturgia de este Mes Septiembre es un mes de nuevos comienzos después del ritmo más relajado del verano. Las lecturas de estos domingos, en el tiempo ordinario, continúan marcando los caminos de la vida cristiana. Sobre to-do, hablan de humildad, renuncia, arrepentimiento, la abundante generosidad y misericordia de Dios, la fidelidad y el llamado a la acción comprometida. Los cristianos están llamados a la lógica de la generosid-ad de Dios, que no se parece al mercantilismo de este mundo. Este mes tiene importantes momentos litúrgicos. El Día del Trabajo se celebra el primer fin de semana, que aunque es una fiesta cívica, proporciona un buen momento para la catequesis sobre la misión creativa de Dios y la colaboración de las manos humanas. La fiesta de la exaltación de la Santa Cruz se celebra el día 14, con una invitación a reflexionar sobre la salvación que nos llega con una señal que a veces es tan familiar; puede pasar desapercibido en todo su significado profundo. También tenemos dos días importantes de fiesta mariana. El 8 de septiembre celebramos la Natividad de María, que adopta diferentes nombres en diferentes lugares, como Nuestra Señora de la Cari-dad, Guadalupe, Nuria y Regla; y el memorial de Nuestra Señora del Dolor es el 15. Por último, este año, la Iglesia celebrará el Domingo Catequético el 15 de septiembre. Esta es una gran oportunidad para reconocer a quienes con tanta fe, generosidad y dedicación ofrecen su servicio de cate-quesis en las parroquias, y para alentar a todos a considerar su vocación para ser locutor y eco de las Buenas Nuevas.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the tiny woman recognized throughout the world for her work among the poorest of the poor, was beatified October 19, 2003. Among those present were hundreds of Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in 1950, as a diocesan religious community. Today the congregation also includes contemplative sisters and brothers and an order of priests. Born to Alba-nian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia, Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived. For a time, the family lived comforta-

bly, and her father’s construction business thrived. But life changed overnight following his unexpected death. During her years in public school, Agnes participated in a Catholic sodality and showed a strong inter-est in the foreign missions. At age 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. It was 1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final time and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. There she chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her—the poverty, the suffering, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people. In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as “a call within a call. The message was clear. I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.” She also heard a call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and instead, to “follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor.” After re-ceiving permission to leave Loreto, establish a new religious community, and undertake her new work, Sister Teresa took a nursing course for several months. She returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white sari and sandals–the ordinary dress of an Indian wom-an–she soon began getting to know her neighbors—especially the poor and sick—and getting to know their needs through visits. The work was exhausting, but she was not alone for long. Volunteers who came to join her in the work, some of them former students, became the core of the Missionaries of Charity. Others helped by donating food, clothing, supplies, and the use of buildings. In 1952, the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former hostel, which became a home for the dying and the destitute. As the order expanded, services were also offered to orphans, abandoned children, alcoholics, the aging, and street people. For the next four dec-ades, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor. Her love knew no bounds. Nor did her energy, as she crisscrossed the globe pleading for support and inviting others to see the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 5, 1997, God called her home. Blessed Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016. Reflection Mother Teresa’s beatification, just over six years after her death, was part of an expedited process put into effect by Pope John Paul II. Like so many others around the world, he found her love for the Eucharist, for prayer, and for the poor a model for all to emulate.
