Remaining in the Upper Room

Peter Maurin, the man who helped Dorothy Day found the Catholic

Worker, used say: “When you don’t know what else to do, keep going

to meetings!” Sound advice.

Jesus, it seems, would agree. At the end of Luke’s gospel, just before

he departs this earth, he gives his rather shaky group of followers this

counsel: “Return to the city and don’t leave until you feel yourself

clothed with power from on high!” We find out later, in the Acts of

the Apostles, how his followers interpreted that. They met and waited

together in an “upper room” until they felt the fire of Pentecost.

When one tries to name the present moment in the church, few

metaphors are as penetrating, as fertile a field for reflection, and as

descriptive of what is actually happening as is this biblical image—a

formerly-confident-but-now-somewhat-deflated group of disciples is

huddled together in an upper room, confused and out of gas, needing

to be recharged with power from above. That’s us; except our upper

rooms are legion—church meetings of every kind, diocesan synods,

ministerial associations, congresses on how to re-found religious life,

ecumenical meetings, pastoral institutes, social-justice commissions,

efforts in missiology, institutes on spirituality, and men and women all

over the world (in kitchens and monasteries) feeling powerless and

praying for God to come anew into our world. Our church meetings

are “the upper room.”

Like the original upper room, our venues too are humble, church

basements and church conference-centers, with their plastic chairs and

disposable cups. The upper room is never glamorous, a de Vinci

painting. It’s more like the meeting-room in your local church.

But that’s where we are today, by necessity, waiting for a new health

and joy to return after a painful period within which we are being

humbled and purified. This is not a time of pride for the church.

Secular forces are increasingly marginalizing us; humiliating church-

scandals, to the delight of the culture, frequently headline the front

pages of our newspapers; and it’s fashionable to be anti-ecclesial and

anti-clerical. This isn’t a time to hold one’s ecclesial-head very high.

Much of this, however, can be understood biblically, as a time of

pruning, a time in the “upper room.” Much of what is happening in the

church today is deserved, the chickens coming home to roost. We

lived too long in a time of ecclesial and clerical privilege, forgetting

that what we falsely idealize we will soon enough demonize. How we

love to see the gods fall! A time of disprivilege will always follow its

opposite. There was a time when the church couldn’t do anything

wrong. Now it can’t do anything right. So Jesus has sent us back into

the upper room, to pray and to wait, to sort out our confusion, and to

re-root ourselves in the basics, so as to prepare to receive a new fire.

But that’s only half of it. We are in the upper room today for another

reason too: like the first-followers of Jesus, immediately after his

departure, we also don’t know any more what we should be doing. So

much of what used to work no longer does. We are finding it ever-

harder to pass on our faith to our own children, to fire the religious

and romantic imagination of our culture, and to make a religious and

moral dent of any kind in the ever-hardening secularity of ordinary

consciousness. What should we be doing in the face of declining

church attendance, the emptying and greying of our seminaries and

convents, the growing agnosticism of our world, and the ecclesial

indifference of so many of our own children?

Biblically, here is our answer: return to the city and remain in the

upper room! What is meant by that? In Luke’s writings, “the city”

refers to Jerusalem which, itself, is an image for the church, the faith,

the dream that Jesus had instilled. To walk away from Jerusalem, as

the disciples were doing in walking towards Emmaus, was to walk

away from the church, the faith, and the dream. So now, like then,

Jesus tells us: “Return to the city, to the dream!” And what is the

upper room? The fundamentals. Our faith has some basics, some

elementals, a rock-bottom foundation that we need always to fall back

on. Too often, for every kind of noble reason, we forget (irrespective

of the importance of the moral or religious struggle we are engaged in)

that what God ultimately wants of us is charity, patience,

understanding, hospitality, humility, prayer, community with each

other, forgiveness, and a non-judgmental attitude. To enter the upper

room is to re-root ourselves in these and then trust that God will save

all those people that we can’t.

And we support others and ourselves in all of this by going to

meetings! When you don’t know what else to do, return to the upper

imagen bíblica: anteriormente confiados, pero ahora un grupo de

superior, confundido y sin gas, necesitando ser recargado con el poder de

legiones—reuniones de iglesias de todo tipo, sínodos diocesanos,

asociaciones ministeriales, congresos sobre cómo encontrar vida

religiosa, reuniones ecuménicas, institutos pastorales, comisiones de

justicia social, esfuerzos en misiología, institutos sobre espiritualidad, y

hombres y mujeres de todo el mundo (en cocinas y monasterios)

sintiéndose impotentes y orando para que Dios vuelva a nuestro mundo.

Nuestras reuniones de la iglesia son "la habitación superior".

Al igual que la habitación superior original, nuestros salones también son

humildes, sótanos de iglesias y centros de conferencias parroquiales, con

sus sillas de plástico y vasos desechables. La habitación superior nunca es

glamorosa, como una pintura de Vinci. Es más como la sala de reuniones

en su iglesia local.

Pero ahí es donde estamos hoy, por necesidad, esperando que regrese una

nueva salud y alegría después de un período doloroso en el que estamos

siendo humillados y purificados. Este no es un tiempo de orgullo para la

iglesia. Las fuerzas seculares nos están marginando cada vez más; Los

escándalos de la iglesia humillantes, para deleite de la cultura, encabezan

con frecuencia las portadas de nuestros periódicos; y está de moda ser

anti-eclesial y anti-clerical. Este no es un momento para mantener la

cabeza eclesial muy alta.

Mucho de esto, sin embargo, puede entenderse bíblicamente, como un

tiempo de poda, un tiempo en la “sala superior”. Mucho de lo que está

sucediendo en la iglesia hoy en día es merecido, los pollos regresan al

gallinero. Hemos vivido demasiado tiempo como iglesia privilegiada y y

clerico, olvidando que lo que idealizamos falsamente pronto lo

demonizaremos. ¡Cómo nos gusta ver caer a los dioses! Un tiempo de

falta de privilegio siempre seguirá su opuesto. Hubo un momento en que

la iglesia no podía hacer nada malo. Ahora no se puede hacer nada bien.

Así que Jesús nos ha enviado de vuelta a la habitación superior, para orar

y esperar, para solucionar nuestra confusión, y para volver a enraizarnos

en lo básico, a fin de prepararnos para recibir un nuevo fuego.

Pero eso es solo la mitad. Estamos en la habitación superior hoy también

por otra razón: como los primeros seguidores de Jesús, inmediatamente

después de su partida, tampoco sabemos lo qué deberíamos estar

haciendo. Mucho de lo que solía funcionar ya no funciona. Nos resulta

cada vez más difícil transmitir nuestra fe a nuestros propios hijos, a

difundir la imaginación religiosa y romántica de nuestra cultura, y hacer

de cualquier hendidura religiosa y moral en la secularidad aun más dura

de la conciencia ordinaria. ¿Qué deberíamos estar haciendo ante la

disminución de la asistencia a la iglesia, lo vacante y el envejecimiento

de nuestros seminarios y conventos, el agnosticismo creciente de nuestro

mundo y la indiferencia eclesial de tantos de nuestros propios hijos?

Bíblicamente, aquí está nuestra respuesta: ¡regresa a la ciudad y

permanece en la habitación superior! ¿Qué se entiende con eso? En los

escritos de Lucas, "la ciudad" se refiere a Jerusalén que, en sí misma, es

una imagen de la iglesia, la fe, el sueño que Jesús había inculcado.

Alejarse de Jerusalén, como lo hicieron los discípulos al caminar hacia

Emaús, era alejarse de la iglesia, la fe y el sueño. Así que ahora, como

entonces, Jesús nos dice: “¡Regresen a la ciudad, a el sueño!” ¿Y qué

significa la habitación superior? Los fundamentos. Nuestra fe tiene

algunos conceptos básicos, algunos elementos, una base de fondo de roca

a la que siempre debemos recurrir. A menudo, por todo tipo de razones

nobles, nos olvidamos (independientemente de la importancia de la lucha

moral o religiosa en la que estamos comprometidos) que lo que Dios

finalmente quiere de nosotros es caridad, paciencia, comprensión,

hospitalidad, humildad, oración, comunidad con los demás, perdón, y una

actitud sin crítica. Entrar en la habitación superior es volver a enraizarnos

en estos y luego confiar en que Dios salvará a todas esas personas que

nosotros no podemos.

Y nosotros apoyamos a los demás y a nosotros mismos en todo esto

habitación superior—continúe asistiendo a las reuniones.

and Parents/Guardians Sacramental Preparation for

Reconciliation and Eucharist

Do you desire a deeper relationship with Jesus and a better

understanding of our Catholic faith for you and your family?

Family Based Religious Education (FBRE) is a monthly

faith formation program for Kindergarten through 8th grade

children and adults that provides the oppor tunity for

parents/guardians and children to learn about their faith

together and grow in relationship with Jesus as a family – the

“domestic church.” Preparation for the Sacraments of

Reconciliation and Eucharist are also coordinated through

this program.

Registration forms for the 2019-20 program are available in

the gathering space at church in the literature pockets on the

wall by the side entrance, and on the website under the drop

down menu “Faith Formation > Faith Formation Registration.”

•Read and fill out the Registration and Covenant Agreement

forms and submit them to the FBRE depar tment with

payment.

•Registration forms with full payment, may be mailed to

Blessed Sacrament FBRE, PO Box 619, Burlington NC 27216.

•To set up a payment plan, please meet with Ann Imrick or Pat

Matterson to fill out the appropriate paperwork at one of the

scheduled registration sessions listed below or by making an

appointment to meet at the parish office at 710 Koury Dr.

Alamance County Scouts placed American Flags on the

gravesites of fallen veterans at 3 Memorial Parks over the

holiday weekend. As par t of the Scouts Patr iotic Duty,

many Alamance County Scouts mustered together to honor the

valor and courageous effort of Alamance County fallen

Veterans. It was a great weekend and effort displayed by the

young men and women of the Alamance Scouting Program.

No one is admitted once the orientation session begins. So please plan

accordingly.

Requirements for the Faith ID Card:

1)1) Participation in the FaithAction ID Orientation;

2) Proof of Identification (original documents not copies: i.e., national ID card,

passport, school ID, expired driver’s license, library card with photo, work

permit with photo, border cross card, birth certificate along with a photo ID

from this list, etc…)

3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone or electricity bill, lease

agreement, bank statement, etc…)

The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only) and will include

your photo, full name, and address, date of birth, and expiration date, along with

the FaithAction Logo.
