Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility

Humorist Garrison Keillor hung this name ruefully on oneof the churches in his fictitious village, Lake Wobegon.

No matter what the name of our church, the blessing ofbeing able to serve can become a burden unless we seethose we serve through heaven’s eyes, as: sons anddaughters of heaven’s High King! Sisters and brothers ofthe Lord Jesus! Heirs of God, co-heirs with Christ! Yes,they still struggle with sin. So do we. Yes, they still fall forSatan’s temptations. So do we. Yes, they often seemunthankful. So do we. But one day, they will shine in glory–just as we will trophies of God’s grace in Christ!

That eternal perspective transforms our service. It energizesour calling. Even the most menial tasks, done in Jesus’name, matter. They matter forever! “He is no fool who giveswhat he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose,” wrotemissionary Jim Elliot in his journal sometime before hismartyrdom in 1956.

An excerpt from Thanking God for Your Servant Heart

Garrison Keillor could make most anyone laugh; he had amake believe village called Lake Wobegon that was inMinnesota, and it was fabulous. He used to be on PBSradio on Saturday afternoons, I haven’t heard him for yearsbut he could make me laugh, just hearing his name bringsa smile to my face. He certainly used his gift of humor, whether or not he was a religious man, I do not know, but Ido know he used his gift and I am grateful that God gavehim that gift as I am sure many others are. Used to, youcould rent his tapes from the Library, they are worth a listen.

Making people smile can be a tremendous service, whenwe smile, we almost always, if just for that moment, feelbetter. That smile that is given to a stranger passing by uson the street or by opening the door and saying hello witha smile, these actions can make a big difference in another’sday. Sometimes we forget that lonely people depend upontheir interaction with strangers for the nurturing they needduring the day to feel joy. When we wake each morning, ifwe ask Jesus to be with us and make a conscious decisionto carry him with us, the little things that we do during theday for others and to others, may make a big difference insomeone’s day, making it better, making them feel Jesus’compassion and love for others. The Holy Spirit may justguide us down that path for that very reason. Give thatsmile away, we never know who we may be touching.
