Understanding My ValueTo My Church Community

Laura Humphries,Parish Life Director

The origins of this work of mercy, comfort the afflicted, isfound in the life of Jesus and reported in the Gospels. Thereis only one occasion in which Jesus requested comfort. This is narrated in the Gospels as that climactic momentwhen the Last Supper scene is joined to the passion. Uponarriving at the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus becameemotionally distraught. “He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Thenhe said to them, ‘My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remainhere and keep watch.’ He advanced a little and fell to theground and prayed that if it were possible the hour mightpass by him” (Mark 14:33–35). Remain and watch, catchwords for attending to Jesus’ sorrow by their merepresence and prayer. Unfortunately, the disciples failedmiserably in their duty, for they fell asleep and detachedthemselves from Jesus’ agony, leaving him to suffer alone.Nothing that the disciples could have done would havechanged the course of events. Jesus himself had warnedthem, by their abandonment of him, would add to his sorrow. And herein is found one of the first lessons about this workof mercy. To comfort the sorrowful does not mean removingthe sorrow, much less restoring what was lost. Rather, itmeans to be present in and to endure the storm of loss, grief, and pain of the most unimagined kind with those whoare suffering. Does it change the circumstances? No, itdoes not, but it does communicate God’s love andcompassion: You are not alone. God is with you. God knowssuffering, too. This work of mercy is an outpouring of Christto others through us. An excerpt from Liguorian.org

We are all called to comfort each other. Parents comfortchildren, just as our heavenly Father comforts us. The poor, the lonely, the sick, the depressed, all need our love andkindness. Just as Christ has taught us by his life to becompassionate to one another we must be like him andchoose to be compassionate to others. It is always easierto turn away and not put forth the effort to be as Christ callsus to be. To be a Christian is to love one another, evenwhen it isn’t the popular thing or the easiest thing to do. Ireally have to pray about this because there are peoplethat I have trouble loving but I want to be the person thatChrist calls me to be so I pray and ask for Christ’s grace tohelp with my failures and give me strength to be a betterChristian. How can I be an outpouring of Christ to others? Istill have a lot of work to do, I’m working on it and hope youwill pray for me as I pray for you.
