And everyone who listens to these words ofmine but does not act on them will be like afool who built his house on sand.

Matthew 7:26

Listening to God is the easy part. Who among us sets outin the morning intending to displease him? And it’d bedifficult to find anyone who would quarrel with the spiritualand corporal works of mercy — in theory, anyway. Thedifficulty comes in living his words. Yes, it does diminishour relationship with God to gossip or to skip a visit to anailing parishioner. Yes, envying another success crowdsout space in our souls meant for the father. And yes, weare setting ourselves up as higher deities when we doubtthat what we’ve done can’t be made clean. A clear, concretepath lies before us. May we have the faith to stay on it andnot venture into quicksand. An excerpt from Living Faith

In the verses before the one written above from Matthew’sGospel Jesus tells us how we need to be aware that falseprophets may come in sheep’s clothing and can lead usastray and that only the one that does the will of the Fathercan enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Do we know anyone thattries to lead us astray, that tries to lure us away from thetruth? Are we doing the will of the Father or the will ofsomeone or something else? Are we living as God wouldwant us to live? Have we asked for forgiveness and/or givenforgiveness to those who have hurt or angered us? Wecannot enter the gates of heaven without forgiving. What isour path, is it clear or muddied with quicksand? Throughprayer and time spent with God, we can find the answer.

Focus on Mental Illness—Impact on the FamilyMany families are ill equipped to respond to the multiplechallenges of a family member‘s diagnosis of mental illness.Behaviors can be misinterpreted, and finding effectiveresources and medical interventions may proveoverwhelming. The strain on the family can be significant. The stigma that often accompanies this illness may causefamilies to be hesitant to share their need for support duringthis difficult time. How can our parish be of support to familieswith this need?
