Growing up, some of my favorite Thanksgiving holidays were experienced at my grandparents’ house. My brother and I would watch Macy’s parade

on TV, then a cartoon called “Mouse on the Mayflower,” which is on YouTube now (but then again, what isn’t on YouTube!)

The afternoon dinner table was covered with food, but there were always our favorites; a turkey leg and Pillsbury crescent rolls. We prayed, we ate, we laughed and then we feasted on pecan pie watching the football games.

I look back fondly on those special Thursdays. I know you possess your own memories of times past. But I hope you are making special memories for your

kids and grandkids. These are the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays that will cause them to reminisce years from now. Hopefully, they will remember a family praying together, giving thanks to God for all the blessings received and all the days enjoyed.

I pray that your family will recognize God’s presence when you gather in your homes this month. And if you are looking for a new tradition, pull up YouTube and check out that mouse that sailed over with the pilgrims!

New holiday sermon series begins the weekend of November 28 & 29:

“Where Are You, Christmas?”

[It’s highly unusual for siblings who are both Air Force pilots to be stationed at the same base at the same time, so Chris Shelly and his brother, Matt, are making the most of their time together at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia.

Chris, a first lieutenant, is an Air Force Reserve A-10 pilot assigned to the 76th Fighter Squadron, while Matt, a captain, is an active-duty A-10 pilot assigned to the 74th FS, whose members are affectionately known as the world-famous Flying Tigers. The 74th is part of the 23rd Fighter Group, which is famous for its shark teeth-sporting A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft. The 76th is a part of the 476th Fighter Group and is a Total Force Integration unit that is integrated into the 23rd Fighter Group.

The Shelly brothers grew up in Wichita, Kansas and learned to love flying at an early age from their father, an avid private pilot who works for the Boeing Company. They have two more brothers and one sister—one of their brothers is a vehicle mechanic in the Air Force. Matt, who is 32 and four years older than Chris, attended Kansas State University at Salina on an ROTC scholarship, and began his Air Force career immediately after graduation. Chris went to Wichita State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and worked for three years in the civilian sector before

deciding to follow his older brother into the Air Force.

“I definitely encouraged Chris to think about becoming an Air Force pilot, but I didn’t have to push him too hard,” Matt said. “We both grew up flying, and I think he could see how much I loved flying A-10s, so it wasn’t a hard sell at all.”

What is a little unusual, however, is that Matt actually encouraged Chris to join the Air Force Reserve instead of the active-duty Air Force.

“I told Chris that the Reserve might be a good way to go because you have a little more freedom in choosing what kind of aircraft you want to fly in the Reserve than you do in active duty.”

“If you go active duty, the Air Force tells you what you will be flying,” Chris said. “By going into the Air Force Reserve, I was able to apply specifically to A-10 squadrons because I knew I wanted to fly A-10s.”

Chris applied to both the 76th FS at Moody and the Reserve’s 303rd FS at Whiteman AFB in Missouri and accepted a position with the 76th. He is currently serving a full-time active Guard and Reserve seasoning tour at Moody so he can build up his proficiency in the A-10. He will eventually become a traditional Reservist assigned to the 76th.

Meet the family | Matt & Chris Shelly

In honor of Veteran’s Day, we are reprinting an article written by Bo Joyner from the 7/29/2015 issue of Air Force Print News Today. The article features brothers Matt and Chris Shelly, sons of long-time Central Christian members, Mark and Deb Shelly.

6

Chris completed pilot training and arrived at Moody in January, the same time Matt returned to South Georgia from a three-year stint flying MQ-9 Reapers out of Creech AFB in Nevada.

Chris, his wife and their 1-year-old son rented a house right across the street from where Matt and his wife live with their three boys, ages 6, 4 and 1.

“It’s been great being stationed here with Matt,” Chris said. “Not just because of flying A-10s, but because of the family thing as well. Our wives are best friends, and our kids are getting the chance to grow up right across the street from each other. It couldn’t have worked out any better.”

Reserve and active-duty A-10 pilots fly training missions together all the time at Moody, but the Shelly brothers have yet to fly together in their Warthogs over the South Georgia skies.

“It would be really great to have Chris fly on my wing,” Matt said.

“He definitely has a lot more experience in the A-10,” Chris said. “I’m trying to learn everything I can, so I think it would be great to fly with Matt. The Air Force doesn’t like to have people from the same family flying missions together just in case there is some kind of an accident, but there is a chance we might get to fly together some day. I think it would be a blast.”

Chris has yet to deploy in the A-10, but when he does deploy he will definitely be looking to Matt for advice on flying the Thunderbolt II in combat.

Matt has two deployments under his belt and has a lot to share with his younger brother.

“I really enjoyed my deployments,” he said. “There is nothing like the feeling you get when you support our troops on the ground during a Close Air Support mission.”

CAS is air action against hostile targets that are close to friendly ground forces. It requires detailed integration with the troops on the ground and other aircraft in the area.

Just like his older brother, Chris enjoys the CAS mission and piloting the A-10.

“It’s a great plane to fly, and I’m thrilled to be serving my country in the Air Force Reserve,” he said. “Being stationed at the same base with my brother is just icing on the cake.”

Capt. Matt Shelly (left) and his younger brother, Chris, a first lieutenant, are enjoying their time together as pilots at Moody AFB in Georgia.

During this service we get the opportunity to honor our families that are taking on this important task. We would be pleased if you would join us to help honor them.

Save The Date for “Bingo Blast”!Our yearly volunteer appreciation event is just around the corner and with the craziness of the holidays we want to make sure that you get this date on your calendar. Be sure to reserve Friday, January 15th for you and your family. This event is for anyone who volunteers in any aspect of Central Kids. There will be more details to come, and we promise this is one event you will not want to miss!!

This event is a special night of pampering for 4th & 5th grade girls and their moms! The cost is just $5 per person. Questions? Call Central Kids at 688-4400. Friday, November 13 @ 6–8pm in the C3 Youth Center

Mother DaughterSpa Night

Sponsoring a child from our “Tree of Angels” for the holidays has been a tradition here at Central for over 15 years. Again this year we offer this ministry opportunity to you and ask that you prayerfully consider being a part of our team. During the month of November, we will have a table set up in the lobby before and after services with the names of our “angels” available for “adoption”. You may also get them through the week by contacting Barb Marchand in the church office.

At our tables you will find gift tags for children which will list their first name and age. In turn, you are asked to purchase a gift for this child (no more than $50 please) and WRAP your gift. Place the gift tag you picked up back on the gift to identify which child the gift is for and return to the table in the lobby, or drop it off at the church office no later than December 7th. Simple as that!

Most importantly, we ask that you pray for your child and their family. Many of the children we present to you are from single-parent, low-income homes; some are orphans who live with extended family, or other caretakers. There are a variety of needs which we are not aware of, but God is, and while this gift may bring them that excitement every child anticipates on Christmas morning, even more so, it is our prayer these gifts will help them find the true joy that only comes from knowing our Savior, Jesus Christ. Many of these children come through the mentorship program with Youth Horizons and their gifts are given at a special Christmas party where the Gospel is presented to all in attendance. Others come through our ministry with His Helping Hands.

Thank you in advance for helping make a difference in helping brighten the life of one of these children, and for showing them the love of Christ!

Where are you, Christmas?

In the flurry of family get-togethers, the bustle of shopping malls, the planning, decorating, wrapping, baking...have you ever lost what is most precious about Christmas? “...and you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with allyour heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Don’t worry, be happy! Seize the day! Forget about tomorrow, focus on today!

If only it were that easy, right? How many of you are paralyzed by fear, worries or anxiety like I am? Even as we speak, I am having anxiety….about writing about anxiety; isn’t that ironic? (God did not gift me with the talent of wordsmithing; it takes me hours and lots of erasers).

And the result of all that worry? I am actually thinking slower and accomplishing less. See, our bodies can only experience hyperarousal or, in other words, be stressed, anxious, fearful, for so long. The brain slows down when it becomes overwhelmed with stress to protect itself. Similar to when an injury occurs to the body, let’s say your ankle; there is a swelling response that prevents you from using it in order to protect from further injury.

To summarize, anxiety causes our brain to protect itself by slowing down, so that we don’t “lose our minds,” no pun intended. While science can explain how anxiety works, God can tell us how to bust it. God designed our sophisticated brains to protect us from worry; however worry does not come from God. In fact, God was the first ever to instruct on the ways to prevent the worry overload. Jesus himself made 21 statements in the Gospels on the theme of “fear not”; more than any other theme.

“Fear Not” by Lindsay Mullins, LMFT

The Lord tells us not to fear, but rather to have faith in Him and His purpose.

Worry is the opposite of faith, yet it is our human nature to be concerned about things beyond our control. Two key words there—human nature— something very different than “Heaven nature”.

You have a soul that is promised to live in peace and harmony for eternity. If you trust something as precious as your eternal soul to God, can you trust your earthly worries to Him?

Cast your human nature aside and cast your cares upon Jesus. Live through your eternal soul’s perspective in knowing that the worries of this life will fade; they do not matter in context of your eternal life.

To borrow from Paul, one final thing, dear brothers and sisters:

“Do not be anxious about anything; instead pray about everything, tell Him what you need and thank Him for what He has done...fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” PhiliPPians 4:6-8

PraiseGodtowhomallblessingsflow! As I write this article, the leaves are already beginning to fall, indicating the coming winter ahead. It also signals that preparations for our annual “Mountain of Food” drive will soon begin. As we again seek your provision to fully supply and restock our pantry for another year, I am blessed by the following scripture from 2 Corinthians 9:10-12.

“Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.”

So I give praise to God for your faithfulness to Him and your provision for the needs of the Body at Central. We look forward to your gifts of non-perishable food items. The items on the list are some of the most common items for donation. We average two to three food requests a week from those coming to Central. The “Mountain of Food” will be up the first weekend in November through Christmas. Food donations will again be accumulated in the south part of the lobby area near the children’s check-in area at the “Mountain of Food” display. Thank you in advance for all of your generous donations and thus the blessing of many in need! Praise the Lord!!

Christmaswith JesusSaturday, December 128:00 am – Noon

Each week, the staff and volunteers of His Helping Hands distribute food, clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods, refurbished computers and used automobiles. We are thankful to the Lord for providing these items through you so we might be able to help others in the name of Jesus Christ. The HHH clients are also very thankful and we want to share some of their thank you notes with you.

From a local Senior Center who received some food: “It’s nice to know that there are still people who take such pleasure in doing special things and making others feel good. May God bless you all every day and thank you for all the food and blessings you all brought to our community. It was truly wonderful! You’re all really special!”

From a referring agency: “We just wanted to say thank you for serving our client, WM. You helped him get a bed and sheets and a bedspread. He also was able to get some new shoes! We appreciate all your help and for also getting him a wheelchair. Thank you again for your kindness in serving our local seniors.”

From a young father who was recently released from prison: “Words cannot express how much appreciation I have for the kindness you showed me and my son by providing us with this vehicle. Life has been a vicious cycle of ups and downs, with more downs than ups, but your generosity has shown me that there are good people and goodness in life. Your example has moved my heart to help others. Many doors have been opened since I received this vehicle and I thank you so much. Please let me know if

there is anything I can ever do to help you and your ministry. Again, thank you so much!”

We have much to be thankful for! Above all, we are thankful for Jesus Christ who makes it possible for us to have fellowship with a Holy God! May God bless you and your family abundantly during this Thanksgiving season and beyond!!

A thankful family receiving gifts from HHH

Central CourtSaturday, December 12

Ladies, it’s timeto register for our annual Christmas Extravaganza Brunch!Register through December 6th onlineor in the church office Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm.

As in the past, we would love to have you help with our table decorations. Table decorators may arrive between 4–9 pm on Friday, December 5th, or from 7:30–8:45 am on Saturday, December 6th. On Friday, doors 13 & 14 will be open (north side), on Saturday, doors 3 & 14 will be open.

We ask that you provide the “centerpiece” with a Christmas theme; we will provide all the other serving needs, including a white tablecloth for each round table. You may decorate as many tables as you wish. If decorating a table, you may reserve all or part of the table for you and your friends, or you may leave it open for guests. If you are registering by yourself, please let us know if you have been invited by a table host, if you wish to sit with friends, or if you are coming alone.

As with all events, it takes “servants” to make sure we are ready to open the doors for our guests. If you are willing to help, please let us know right away. We need greeters and ushers, and those willing to help clean up after the event (this should take only 30 minutes). We know you will love our guest speaker, Jennifer Baysinger! She is a long-time business owner, former Women’s Ministry leader, avid couponer and community volunteer. She is passionate about marriage and family, and encourages women to pursue Biblical womanhood. Jennifer studied communications at WSU. She and her husband, Blake, have three boys, Marcus, Mason and Max. They have attended Hope Community Church in Andover for 18 years. Our vocalist, Angie Jones, is well known to many of you. She is a teacher at Central Christian Academy Pre-School and loves teaching her little ones and singing. Come and be blessed by her beautiful vocals!
