David Welsh senior pastorPursuing the heart of God 3

Among all the doomsday predictions that Christianity is on its last breath and that church

attendance is plummeting, comes some factual and uplifting data. From 2007 to 2014,

while most major religious groups experienced decline, evangelicals gained as many as

five million followers. In fact, 35% of all Americans identify themselves as evangelical

believers according to Pew’s Research Center’s 2014 report on religion in the United

States. The report also indicates three very important trends:

When people change faiths, they tend to move towards evangelical. It is the only major Christian group that has gained more members than it has lost when people choose another faith.

Evangelicals are holding on to their young people. Millennials who claim no religious preference grew to 35% during that research time (2007–2014) the share of evangelical millennials remained the same at 21%.

Evangelicals are becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Non-white evangelicals increased from 19 to 24 percent. (Source: Facts and Trends Magazine)

It is interesting that although 1 in 5 Americans claim no religious preference, about 57% pray daily and nearly 1 in 4 pray at least weekly. (Source: General Social Survey)

What does this all mean? Never count out the church of Jesus Christ! He gave His life for us, the church. While culture continues to grow increasingly hostile, churches that remain in the truth of God’s Word will always attract those who hurt, who seek answers and who need hope.

“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24–25 NLT)

CRAIGTUCKERlifegroups

LifeGroupsAs Christ-followers, our desire is to build authentic relationships

with other Christians, to grow spiritually, and to serve others. A

LifeGroup is one of the best ways to live these out. LifeGroups

at Central are made up of an average of 6-14 people who meet

to share the ups and downs of life together, and be connected

in community. At our LifeGroup Connection, you’ll have the

opportunity to connect to a group geographically, or by similar

life stage, or just join a group because you sense a connection.

You’ll have the option to connect with an existing group that

has room to grow, or join a new group. New groups will begin

the week of October 4th, and the topic of study will be based

on Pastor David’s sermon series. We’re asking you to make a

commitment for at least six weeks, then new groups will decide

if they are going to continue. In the past, over 95% of new

groups have remained together after experiencing the benefit

of being in a group. Register to attend LifeGroup Connection

online at www.ccc.org/lifegroups, or stop by the table in the

church foyer. Childcare will be offered. Looking forward to

seeing you September 20th!

What could happen IF we came before God to pray? We look around this world and see immense brokenness, difficulty, pain, and suffering. The headlines in the news report the hate in Charleston and the evil all over the Middle East because of ISIS, and it kind of feels like the sky is falling. We¹re going to come together with women of all ages from all over our community and we are going to pray—as a generation of women. Let’s humble ourselves and ask God to open our eyes to the places He wants us to rebuild. We are going to beg Him to use it for His glory. Because like with Nehemiah, we believe that we can be a part of rebuilding all that is broken in this world.

Will you come?

Men’s Discipleship CurriculumIf you’re looking for some meat in your spiritual diet, consider joining this study! Begins Monday, September 14 @ 5:30 am ORThursday, September 17 @ 6:30 pm

DC is a 21 month program of Bible Study, Bible Reading, and BibleMemorization. The course offers a systematic walk through a setof topics, skills, and experiences that will encourage a man to be a more effective disciple of Christ— a program rather thansimply a set of good lessons, or a good Bible course.

The Quest for Authentic ManhoodBegins Wednesday, September 16 @ 6:30 pm OR Thursday, September 17 @ 6:00 am

This 24-week study focuses on a man’s core identity and gives explores the manhood issues common to every man. You will have a clear, biblical definition of manhood so you can give a succinct and passionate answer to the questions, “What is a man?” and “What am I living to be?” Over the course of the study, each man will develop their own personal manhood plan.

Winning at Work & HomeBegins Monday, September 14 @ 6:30 pm

This 16-week study focuses on the two areas that are central to a man’s l ife: career and family. It will build the walls of manhood through study dealing with a man’s chief responsibilities. It explores how a man can enjoy and engage his work, and how he can relate to a woman in a whole new way.

This fall we will be offering 3 groups of Men’s Fraternity classes. Read the descriptions below and pick the one best suited for you. Then register online at www.ccc.org/mens_groups

Be a Central Kids Helper! We continue to see wonderful growth at the Revive service on Sunday mornings at 11:30 and in Journey, our special needs program. With this growth comes the need for more volunteers. In order to continue to offer the same excellent programming that we offer in all our other services, we need your help! If you have a heart to serve, then Central Kids has a place for you. Whether you would enjoy holding infants, playing with preschoolers, praying with preteens, or helping families find their way around our church, we would love to have you join our team. Please call the Central Kids office at 688-4400, or e-mail us at [email protected].

The name AWANA means "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed". For Central Christian, it means a chance to intentionally and consistently help our parents disciple the future of our church: our children! AWANA is a program that uses scripture memory

and evangelistic training to help children from age 3 to grade 5 to become, and continue their journey as “fully devoted Christ Followers.”

To register for the AWANA program, go online to www.ccc.org/awana. The cost for the year is $45 per child (with a $5 discount per child if you register online by, or before, August 26th). New volunteers may receive a discount, so please ask us for an application and for more details at the registration table in the lobby! The kick-off for AWANA will be Wednesday, September 2nd with a Family Night. For this night we ask our parents to attend the entire evening with their children. For those who have pre-registered, this is also your chance to pick up the appropriate materials, so make sure you sign up ASAP. We are also in need of more AWANA leaders tomake this year a success. If you have a desireto help place God’s word into a child’s heart, thenwe need you! The only requirement is thatyou can serve on Wednesday nights,6:15–8:15pm. To be a part of this excitingministry, please call the Central Kids office at 688-4400,or e-mail us at [email protected].

Fall is here and that means it is time for a new round of exciting Bible studies and a season of LifeGroups. As you prepare to attend

these events, we in Friendship Cove, (the childcare ministry of Central Kids) hope you will allow us to bless your family with our services. To help make your child’s time in Friendship Cove successful, here are a few guidelines to remember when requesting childcare. Prior to each session in a new semester, you must register your child to reserve a space through the ministry hosting the program in which you will participate. This reservation allows for the us to plan accordingly and schedule the appropriate number of staff members. In Friendship Cove, we strive to make the childcare experience the best possible. We promote a healthy, happy environment following our Well Child Policy. To help us control the spread of sickness, we ask that you please keep your child at home when they are showing signs of a potentially contagious illness. If you need to make changes, or cancel a childcare reservation, please notify Tracey Hunt using the Central Kids Hotline: 316-425-0655. To help make smooth transitions into and out of Friendship Cove, please keep the following in mind: It is very helpful if you label all of your child’s items, prior to check-in. Also, we recommend that you limit the number of personal belongings, such as toys, blankets, etc., to prevent them from becoming lost in the shuffle. For the safety and security of your child, we ask that only a parent or adult guardian pick them up. Hopefully, you find these friendly reminders helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tracey Hunt at 316-688-4400, ext. 1420, or e-mail her at [email protected].

PAULDOHMhishelpinghands

The volunteers and staff of His Helping Hands have the opportunity to share Jesus with many people each week as we distribute food, clothing and household items. Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” We witnessed the truth of this statement and the passage from I Peter a few weeks ago from one of our volunteers.

A young man by the name of Javon came to HHH to fulfill 300 hours of court-ordered community service for some past offenses. This young man received Jesus as his Savior just before being incarcerated. He spent his time in prison transforming his life from a gang-banger into a follower of Jesus Christ through the reading of God’s Word. As his life was transformed, his new behavior was a positive witness to other inmates. One of those inmates turned his life over to Jesus because of Javon’s life-style witness and Javon didn’t even know it.

Javon recently received a copy of a letter from the daughter of the converted inmate that was being sent to Javon’s parole officer. Parts of the letter stated,

“My father started Damascus Road after a brief stay in prison where he found God and decided once he got out he would help people in need. While my Dad was in prison he became friends with Javon. My Dad felt that Javon was the reason he came to

for the hope that you have.” i peter 3:15

know Christ. My father credited Javon for giving him the desire to open Damascus Road Ministries. My father passed away a year and a half ago from a heart attack. It is our strong desire to bring Javon here (Michigan) to help us with the ministry that my father credited him for getting started. Javon will be living in a residence that is owned by a family member and they already have a bedroom waiting for him.”

When Javon shared the letter with the HHH staff, he started weeping. He had been looking for immediate direction for his life and God provided that direction, along with some tremendous encouragement. Javon had no idea that God had used him to impact this inmate’s life. To find out that a vibrant ministry

in Michigan was one of the results of his transformation was overwhelming for Javon.

We never completely know how God will use us in the lives of others as we give the reason for the hope that we have! Please pray for Javon as he follows God’s leading in his life to help and minister to many others.

Children have headed back for another school year! Homeschool families feel the fresh start of a new year! Thinking back to your childhood, was there someone who was your favorite adult? Maybe it was a teacher, a grandparent, or a family friend. Every child should have someone who is crazy about him or her!

One of my favorite people when I was a child was my great aunt, whom I called Auntie A. Besides hanging out at her house and playing games like Go Fish and Crazy 8’s, Auntie A took me to “Whirly Birds for Jesus” at her church every Wednesday evening. Looking back I realize that she was a key person in my faith development. She might have known the difference she would make in my life, but I’m guessing that she just saw her actions as being the hands and feet of Christ.

Auntie A never married, nor had biological children of her own. But in many ways, she was my second mom and adopted me into her life. Much like each of us are adopted into God’s Kingdom through the gift of salvation. Everyone is called by God to make a difference in some way! Is God calling you to mentor a child just by giving them a ride to a church activity? Or, maybe it is time to contact a retirement community to see if there is someone who just needs a friend to play card games? Make a commitment to listen for God’s call and go where He leads you!

n a scale of one to ten, can you honestly rank your marriage near the top? In some ways marriage may be compared to sports. Good athletes seldom reach stardom without the help of a seasoned coach. For an athlete, the difference between good and spectacular is sometimes measurable in the millions of dollars. Success positively impacts the accomplishment of personal dreams, widespread influence, and the opportunity to improve the lives of others.

Think about the extensive influence an outstanding marriage makes in the lives it touches. It produces a welcome joy in both spouses, brings lasting stability to the family, and ministers hope to the struggling. God powerfully uses successful marriages as a testimony of His grace to forgive, heal, and prosper in spite of the

darkest of circumstances. Could it be that marriage mentors are to marriages what coaches are to athletes? Surely we want our marriages to bring glory to God, yet sometimes we play the blame game, communicate poorly, and are selfish. Feel like throwing in the towel? Don’t do it. There is still hope for your marriage. How about a seasoned coach to provide Biblical wisdom and guidance to help fine-tune your marriage?

I am excited to share with you that Central Christian has marriage mentors. They are seasoned couples, who have learned by mistakes, through outstanding mentors, by experience, and by persistence that marriages should and can be the blessing God designed them to be. Our marriage mentors want to see your marriage prosper and glorify God.
