David Welsh senior pastorPursuing the heart of God

My generation grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons

on all three major networks. The only cable I knew was on some sort of car that people rode on the hills of San Francisco. Somewhere in my childhood, TV people decided we weren’t getting enough schooling and came up with short educational videos like “How a Bill Becomes a Law” and “Conjunction Junction.” But they didn’t fool us kids; we knew they were trying to teach us on our day off and we turned down the volume, which is perhaps why my college grammar skills were somewhat inadequate.

This summer, we offer a new teaching opportunity for the Central family called “Function Junction.” Everyone in God’s family has a function within His church. How we serve is determined by personal experiences, personality, abilities, passion and spir itual g ifts . We cover each theme in the five weeks, culminating in our Involvement Weekend (August 9/10).

Each weekend in this series will be focused on one of these characteristics, and you’ll have an opportunity to engage and participate through personal survey. You will learn more about yourself, your church, and how God can use you in an amazing way. I think you will enjoy each and every topic, and God will be glorified by our desire to serve Him. n

It’s going to be really fun...you don’t want to miss it!!

I’d like to start off by introducing myself. Hi, my name is Brooke Haas.My hometown is Sioux Falls, SD. I’m currently the youth intern at Central Christian. I just completed my junior year at Manhattan Christian College and I’m working towards getting my Family and Counseling degree. I play soccer, enjoy the ukulele and I love the Lord.

What I’m most excited for, to add to my introduction, is the opportunity to share my thoughts with you and what I’ve experienced when it comes to love. So, here it goes...

Sunday, June 1, 2014:This was my first Sunday working at CCC.

I was nervous and excited to meet new faces and attempted to remember new names.

It went pretty well.

I was introduced at Sunday school as NOT being in high school.

Almost led a group of kids the wrong way (I forgot my map).

And I’m pretty sure I drank my weight in coffee that morning.

These things were fun details, but they did not define me that day.

This past year of school, I was given the opportunity to serve on our Student Council as the Junior Class Student Representative. Pretty fancy title, eh? I was given the pleasure

of advertising and making sure every junior was invited to events we held. This task was simple; nonetheless, juniors were all over the place.

Our school-wide theme this year was [Re]Define. Throughout the school year, speakers came and talked about what a defining moment was and how we can be redefined.

On that particular Sunday, a friend and I were to meet at Wal-Mart to get ingredients to make sundaes for our high school students. I got there to find him sitting on a bench in the entryway. I was immediately conscious that I was late and that he had been waiting for me. I strode up next to him, took a seat, and we were both quiet for an amount of time. This was becoming an uncomfortable silence for me as I awaited instruction.

He opened with, “I’ve been sitting here watching these people go by, and I saw this little girl wearing this fun white t-shirt, neon green shorts and little knee high cowboy boots. Remember when we could wear anything and not have to worry about what others thought of us if we matched?”

I responded with a chuckle, “ha, yeah…”

I fondly remember that I was always in matching outfits with my sister, but when I was

not, I experimented with princess costumes and boy clothes.

I digress…

We sat in stillness, just observing as folks walked in and out of the entrance. Some were in a hurry, some taking their time. The overarching theme was that they were themselves going about their day. I wonder if anyone noticed our presence as they passed by.

In the midst of our thoughts, my friend asked this question,

“How much would it take in order to love each one of these persons?”

Each one? That’s impossible. How could I even love one??

It caught me off guard and I had no words. Do you understand why? I was not even open to loving to the fullest, to loving in the strength of Jesus, to loving with the help of the most perfect and complete kind of love. It lives inside each one of us, we’ve just forgotten about that awesome power.

I want you to notice my thought process:

“How could I...”

I was focused on how I could do something, how I could love. I didn’t even leave room to ask for help from the mightiest lover of all time.

Then it hit me.

In order for me to love each one of these people, I am required to let go of control, to submit all my selfish and judgmental thoughts, and allow myself to be vulnerable in God’s perfect love. That is the only possible way.

It’s not about me at all. That’s where we get caught up and distracted. Satan puts this thought in our brain that we have to do it, that we’re responsible for the souls and lives of everyone on this earth.

Don’t get me wrong here, this is important:

We’re responsible for our souls and personal relationship with the Trinity. We’re responsible for carrying the name of Jesus, the Kingdom, in this world. But, we’re NOT responsible for the choices that people make.

In 1 John 4:7-21, it talks about God’s love. (I encourage you to read this whole passage before you continue on. I’m using NIV.)

Verse 8, 12-13: We are not able to love if we do not know God, because He is love.

“..but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us. This is how we know that we live in Him and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit.”

We are made complete in God’s love when we abide in Him and He in us, making it possible to love others and glorify God at the same time. In verses 20-21, it mentions we lie if we say, “I love God” but do not love our brothers and sisters. Our selfish intent gets in the way.

We’re given two commands:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30

We are not physically, mentally or spiritually able to fully love others if we do not abide in our first love, God. He enables us to love in the most glorifying way.

Again, in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, it mentions doing deeds without love. It is interesting that Paul includes this chapter in the middle of talking about spiritual gifts, and worship, but in the context of chapters 12-14, including the section about love is necessary.

As parts of the body, each of us is gifted with abilities that glorify God if we improve upon them in and with love. We are not enhancing the Kingdom in worshiping or practicing our

gifts out of selfish gain. But, we are provided with encouragement in the following verses, 4-13. This describes the perfect love, having only been modeled and obtained by one person, in which we put our faith, hope and love.

Here is my conclusion:

Because of God’s love, because of Jesus’ example, and because of the Holy Spirit’s power within me, that is only how I will be capable of loving each person that walks in and out of my life. That is a lot of people and a lot of opportunity!

So, I leave you with this:

What will it take for youto love one another? n

expansion into cambodiaChrist Reaching Asia Mission (CRAM) has begun a new outreach into the country of Cambodia (Kampuchea). Their initial ministry opportunity is caring for a number of lepers and their families. This year, they plan to construct simple houses plus a church, and to put in and staff a medical clinic, provide medicines and medical care, and to purchase land to provide some income and healthy food for these leper families. Dr. C. Y. Kim reported that this country and its government are now open to the sharing of the Gospel, unlike the nearby closed nations of Viet Nam and Laos. Dr. Kim, who is in his 70’s, recently took a five-hour bus trip from China to Russia to instruct and baptize a number of new believers. He reported that it was refreshing to preach in Russia where one can openly proclaim the Gospel. China, where he and his wife, Patricia, live and work, is much more restrictive and the government monitors and controls Christian activity.

from intern to missionaryHannah Schmidt went on her first missions trip, at the age of ten, with her grandparents, Dr. Al and Joyce Gregg. That trip was to Guatemala. From that time on, Hannah knew she was destined to serve others. In January, 2013, she began serving full-time in Guatemala as an English teacher with Inn Ministries. She was there as an intern from our church the previous summer. The ministry just released a short online testimony by Hannah indicating how her service has been a blessing to her, to her students, and to the teachers and staff of the school and local church. Hannah is living in 10

building projectRepresentatives of Youth Horizons Ministry (YH) recently presented a ministry update to the Missions Leadership Team (MLT). The report included a brief history of the ministry, pictures of their current facilities and recent achievements and milestones. This ministry provides residential care for boys (ages 11–18) in state custody (foster care system). YH has a screening process in place, provides 24-hour care, a structured environment with Christian house parents, and home schooling for the boys. The boys in residence are given specific work assignments and the staff shares the love of Christ with them by living out the Gospel, attendance at church services, prayer time and counseling. For many of the boys this is the first stable “home” environment they have ever experienced. The MLT approved a grant to this ministry to help secure matching funds for the construction of an additional boys’ home on their local property.

out of africaThe Missions Ministry recently partnered with the “Out of Africa” Sunday School Class providing them with a small grant in support of a Kenyan Independence Day celebration by that international community in Wichita. This international group consists primarily of individuals from East Africa (30–40 adults, plus children), and they meet each week at

11:30 am in the classroom above the Gym in the Youth Center. They recently completed their one-year anniversary as part of Central Christian. Visitors are welcome and the food, fellowship, Bible lessons and programs make for a special time of fellowship and learning.

new mission to germanyJames and Jill Buettgenbach, who have been very active members of Central Christian for several years, are leaving in August to serve full-time for three years with “Teach Beyond” in Germany. They will both be working at a missions’ boarding school (Black Forest

Academy) in the Southwest corner of that country near Switzerland. Jill has served as a teacher at Trinity Academy and James is retiring early as a Wichita Police Officer. Their initial assignments will be as dorm parents for a number

of young girls whose parents are missionaries from and to various countries. They also will be available to assist the school both in the classroom and with campus security. We are proud to support James and Jill as our new missionaries soon serving in Europe. n

Two donated double-wide trailers will soon be remodeled to house the Heavenly Treasures Gift Shop and classrooms with a storage area inbetween.

Last year, His Helping Hands assisted over 9,000 families by distributing food, clothing, furniture, appliances, refurbished computers and used automobiles. This year will be no different, plus we are helping many single moms escape the poverty cycle through the Fresh Hope program.

The growth that HHH is experiencing is a direct reflection of the needs that are prevalent in our community. As the needs are brought to our attention, we meet them to the best of our abilities, all in the name of Jesus Christ.

With any type of growth in the non-profit world comes the challenge of future sustainability. Over the past 24 months, HHH has nearly doubled our building square footage to approximately 50,000. We have six full-time and two part-time employees, plus one full-time employee for the Fresh Hope program. Our staff and volunteers operate two box trucks and a pick-up truck during the week to pick up furniture and appliance donations.

Stewardship of the resources entrusted to HHH is very important to the staff, volunteers and board members. Every square foot, every gallon of fuel, every hour worked has a purpose in accomplishing the task of helping others in their time of need. Presently, it costs HHH an average of $16.91 to help each person who comes to us for assistance.

We “cast our cares on the Lord” and He does sustain the ministry of HHH. The primary way that He sustains us is through you, the individuals who donate to the HHH ministry through hours worked as volunteers and/or through financial contributions to the ministry. Over the past year, 32% of our

budget has been sustained through the donations of individuals.

The second component of the HHH sustainability (26% of our budget) is through the enterprise resourcing projects that we are involved with. These projects include the Heavenly Treasures Gift Shop, the double-sided digital billboard, public auctions and land/office rentals.

Private grants comprise 24% of our budget and contributions from local churches, including Central Christian Church, comprise 18% of our budget. The Fresh Hope program is currently being funded 100% by a local, private foundation. As this program progresses, HHH will commence funding for a percentage of the program.

The purpose of this article is not to bore anyone with numbers. The purpose is to proclaim the goodness of God as He sustains us in our ministry to others. The HHH motto is “we help people help other people.” The sustainability of HHH testifies as to how God uses people to help HHH and then HHH uses those resources to help many people in our community and beyond!

Dear Central Family,

What a wonderful surprise to receive this gorgeous arrangement

for Vera’s celebration service. We have thoroughly enjoyed

the flowers and the book “Good Grief” really is a treasure in

dealing with the loss of our loved ones. We so appreciate the

thoughtfulness and generosity in these gifts. Our family has

been blessed through the life and love of Roger’s mother. At

age 95, she has been ready for a long time to go on to glory.

We rejoice in that hope — though missing her greatly.

Thank you for your gifts, your expressions of love and care.

With love, Roger & Carol London

We so appreciate the beautiful plant in memory of my mother,

Margaret. We are so thankful for our church family.
