My early years were spent in a small town. Everybody knows everyone else in a small town. Your identity was solely connected to your father. People didn’t know my name, they simply asked, ‘You’re Gene’s boy, aren’t you?’ Whenever I did anything wrong, news of my transgression reached home long before I did.

At some point in life, we all face identity problems. Sometimes churches do as well. They are not sure who they are or what they wish to become in service to God. Several weeks ago, we studied our values here at Central. This is who we are:

Our Vision:To be a community after God’s own heart.

Our Mission:To lead people to think like Jesus; live like Jesus.

Our Values: Engaging Truth – We communicate God’s unchanging Word with excellence, relevance and creativity to transform lives.

Courageous Outreach – We seek to reach people who don’t know Jesus, whatever the cost.

Lifestyle Worship – We boldly love God daily with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Authentic Community – We do life together because to love God is to love others, unconditionally.

Bold Prayer – We foster a culture of prayer. When people pray, God shows up.

Open-Handed Life – We generously give the first and best of our time, abilities and resources.

Intentional Discipleship – We equip every Jesus follower to be a disciple who makes disciples.

Knowing who we are determines where we will go as we serve God and others. I pray that you will know your full identity as a child of the King, as you grow closer to your Heavenly Father. n

Who are you?

Grumbling, complaining, plotting, unbelieving — the Hebrews were slow learners. In theirrebellion against God, they were left to suffer the consequences. They would not be allowed entrance to the Promised Land. Yet, God’s faithfulness is enduring and His purposes cannot be thwarted. A new generation of His people would receive the blessing of His promise.

“God of the City” Rev. Efrem Smith, President of World Impact, Guest Speaker

at Missions’ Emphasis Weekend, October 25 & 26

Please join us as we celebrate Missions’ Emphasis Weekend on October 25 & 26. Our theme this year is “God of the City” and our special guest speaker is Rev. Efrem Smith, the President and CEO of World Impact. During this “Great Commission” weekend, Rev. Smith will encourage us with reports that our Lord, who is God of the City, is alive and well, even in the toughest and darkest parts of urban America. He will challenge us to better understand this context and to renew our commitment to be part of his vision to retake and transform the inner city.

Efrem Smith is an internationally-recognized leader who uses motivational speaking and preaching to equip people for a life of transformation and service. He also consults on issues of multi-ethnicity, leadership, and community development for churches, educational institutions, and other organizations.

Currently Efrem serves as the President and CEO of World Impact, an urban mission, church-planting, and leadership-development organization. He is also a much sought after speaker with Kingdom Building Ministries and author of the books, “Raising-up Young Heroes,” “The Hip Hop Church,” “Jump,” and” The Post-Black and Post-White Church.”

Efrem is a graduate of Saint John’s University and Luther Theological Seminary. He served as a Regional Superintendent of the Evangelical Covenant Church prior to coming on board with World Impact.

Efrem is married to Donecia and has two daughters; Jaeda and Mireya.

The ancient cities defeated by Joshua and the Israelites have been forgotten byhistory. Yet, for those in the midst of the battles, those defeats came with risk, loss, hardship and struggle. God’spromise to Abraham centuries earlierwas coming to pass. A new nation wasbeing formed.

The Battle Begins

back more than 40 years. In fact, Central was one of the first churches to support this significant urban ministry when it was founded by Dr. Keith Phillips in 1971. This ministry’s mission statement indicates that they are “a Christian missions’ organization committed to facilitating church-planting movements by evangelizing, equipping, and empowering the unchurched urban poor.” (Their) purpose is to “honor and glorify God and delight in Him in the inner cities by knowing God and making Him known.”

World Impact GoesInternational with TUMI

In the last decade World Impact has been led by the Holy Spirit to expand its leadership training efforts both in the inner city and outside the United States. A separate ministry division known as The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) was created in 1995 to provide theological education to urban leaders. As part of this effort a 16-module, Bible-school, ministry training curriculum was written

and produced by Dr. Don Davis. This “Capstone Curriculum” has been translated into Spanish and efforts are underway to translate it into Romanian, French, Telegu (India), and Arabic. There are currently 178 TUMI satellites or training centers throughout the U.S., and in 12 other countries. This includes TUMI training centers in a number of domestic prisons with more than 1,000 inmates studying the Bible while incarcerated.

Our church is supporting a TUMI satellite in Honduras training more than 80 leaders and pastors, and there are plans within the missions’ ministry to expand our partnership with World Impact into other countries in the future. Pastor David Welsh is a member of the local TUMI advisory council, as is our Missions’ Pastor.

Don’t miss Missions’ Weekend…Jesus is “God of the City,” God Who Rules this World and the World to Come, and God of Each of Our Lives! n

Candy Corn Carnival Volunteers Needed — A tradition at Central Christian is that we host a carnival on Halloween that is a safe alternative for families in our community to Trick or Treating. This year our goal is to continue to grow this as an outreach and we could use your help. We are looking for caring people to help with various aspects of the carnival and in the process show love to families in our community. There are two ways you can help us out. First, we have asked the ministries of CC to help with some of the areas of the carnival and get the opportunity to show our community what they offer. Contact your ministry leader and see what they are dong to help out and how you can be involved. Second, if you are not connected with a ministry at Central and would like to volunteer, then please contact the Central Kids office for more information at 688-4400, or e-mail us at [email protected]. We will need volunteers from approximately 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

“Whatever you do, do your workheartily as for the Lord”

We all want the things we do to honor God. Mostly, we think of Kingdom work as the really difficult and sacrificial stuff. Mission trips, tenure as an elder or, for some of us, nursery duty all come to mind. What if those things we love to do, that come naturally and bring such satisfaction, could also honor God? The women of Stitching Sisters, a ministry of Central Christian, were given the opportunity to experience that great balance where a hobby meets a need in the Kingdom of God. A typical meeting of Stitching Sisters might include anywhere from 4 to 10 women gathered together working simultaneously on individual projects. They are each working independently while sharing their lives in community. Recently, these gals were approached by Amy Stevens, the Director of Agape’ Care Cradle, with a rather unique request. Agape’ Care Cradle had an inventory of six 12” inch burial vaults that lacked the sweet, soft, inner lining and pillows that transform plastic molds into precious caskets. These caskets are donated to parents of stillborn or prematurely born little ones, allowing those parents to honor their little ones with a proper burial. “Would the ladies of Stitching Sisters be interested in sewing up some casket liners?” they were asked one August evening, as they were shown a sample of a tiny combination casket. Out came the measuring tapes, the sketch pads, and the expertise of these women, and a plan was made.

On September 8th, Stitching Sisters gathered once again, but in a unique format. An assembly line formed of measuring tapes, fabric shears, cut materials, sewing machines and threaded bobbins as the ladies used their gifts and hobbies to transform drab burial vaults into beautiful resting places for little ones. When asked what this means for Agape’ Care Cradle, Amy said, “Materially, this saves us over $1,800 if we must order these caskets. But in the Kingdom, the value is much greater. Having a casket available to donate allows us a unique opportunity to minister to a family in what is an unspeakably dark time in their lives. We get to bring Light into darkness!” Thank you, Stitching Sisters, for lighting the candle. n

What are you hungry for in your life? Rest, quiet, accolades, approval of others, peace, respect, comfort, physical touch, material needs, love, food, clothing . . . We are all craving things that we do not have; some are true needs and others are distractions. The economy of our society depends on us having insatiable needs. It feeds into our hungers, our lusts. The goal of advertising is to create the idea that we cannot now, nor will we ever have or be, “enough.” Our society also convinces us that we are slaves to our desires, instead of being bond-servants of God.

I Peter 5 speaks to this reality. Peter calls us to “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time (v. 6).” If we are seeking humility, then we are not being consumed by our own insatiable desires fed by our toxic culture, but we are seeking the heart of God and His highest and best for us. He also promises to “lift us up.” I see that as Him freeing us from our worries. I picture God picking us up from a crumpled heap, weary on our faces on the floor. In my mind, He lifts me up to embrace and strengthen me.

Peter goes on and calls us to “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you (v. 7).” We all struggle with anxiety in different forms; much of it is fed by our hungers, our desires, our ideas that we are failing in some important area, or our sense that we are not living up to the impossible standards set by our culture. What does it mean to actually cast all our anxiety on Him? I believe it means to lay all our desires, hungers, fears of inadequacy, etc. at His feet, sometimes even repeatedly throughout the day. In my life, I can lay something at His feet and then realize that I laid it down and picked it

right back up in one smooth motion. I struggle to relinquish control to God, to trust Him to take care of my concerns in the way I hope they are taken care of. It takes discipline and trust to lay it down and leave it up to God.

In this passage, Peter then reminds us to be aware of the world we live in. He says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast (v. 8–10).”

We are to “be alert and of sober mind.” This means to stay aware, not to become distracted by our hungers and desires, which stem from the enemy who is seeking to devour us. When thinking about our own hungers and desires, it is powerful that Peter used the term “devour” for what the enemy seeks to accomplish. He wants to eat us alive, like a hungry lion. The devil wants us to be consumed by our desires, hungers, lusts. Peter calls us to “stay aware and to resist the devil, standing firm in the faith. Casting our fears and anxieties upon God.” He reminds us that we are members of the body of believers throughout the world, throughout time. In this he speaks to our need for belonging, to not feel alone. He wants us to recall that we are members of the body of Christ over the centuries.

Our suffering is not new in this world. How we handle our suffering (and our hungers) is the most

Many of you may have heard that my family and I have moved on to a new ministry that we feel is the next step in our spiritual journey. When this opportunity came to fruition we approached Pastor Welsh about the possibility of addressing the congregation one last time, to which he gladly agreed. The purpose of this is to extend our deepest gratitude to our family here.

This body has specifically poured into my life for over 30 years. Starting at Joyful Noise, through CCA, young adults groups, and ultimately into ministry, Central has always been a part of our lives. There is no way for us to personally thank the teachers, youth leaders, elders, pastors, Sunday school leaders, and the countless individuals that have been a part of our lives. With that said, if it wasn’t for each of the touches you have put into my family and myself over the years, we would be in a very different place. God has used this body to shape, challenge, and grow us in every possible way. While we are excited about this new opportunity, we are deeply saddened by the fact that, in large part, we are departing the individual relationships that God has used to grow us for so many years. We were not seeking to leave Central, but sometimes the Lord has other plans for us as we have found so evident over the past several years.

It is our deepest desire that this body continue to grow towards maturity in our Lord. We pray deeply that God will continue to use the pastors and individuals of this body to pour into people that attend in the same ways He used them in our lives. Continue to pursue the Lord, His truth, and to spread this wonderful good news that He has entrusted to us.

We love you and God bless you! And in honor of a dear friend and mentor, we repeat our prayer for you all found in the book of Jude.

“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”

You are welcome to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

In His arms,The McClintock Family

Dear Central family,

important part. Do we grumble and complain? Do we seek to meet our own needs apart from God’s plan for our lives? Peter promises that “after you have suffered a little while, God will restore you and make your strong, firm, and steadfast.” If you are like me, we want a clear definition of what “a little while” means. In my life, it always seems that I am ready to get out of the fire of refinement much sooner than God brings me out. But I must trust in His promise that He will “restore [me],” and make me “strong, firm and steadfast.” When I think of what I am truly hungry for, I see that strength, firmness and steadfastness would meet the most primary of my needs. Having strength on difficult days, being firm in my knowledge of who God is and how He sees me, and being steadfast in my ability to trust Him and His plans for my life would answer all of my fears and anxieties.

Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:13–14).” I pray that we may all take time to drink the living water that He has given us so that our hungers and thirsts may be truly satisfied in Christ. n

Transformations can occur in many varieties. The staff and volunteers of His Helping Hands get to witness many transformations. The most important being the individuals who turn their lives over to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Those individuals, who are tired of substance abuse, lying, stealing, killing, or any other type of activity that just drags them down, find hope in Jesus. By reading His Word and submitting to His Lordship, they are transformed “into His image with ever-increasing glory”.

Other transformations are important also. For example, some of the appliances, computers, automobiles and furniture items that are donated to HHH need some repairs and attention. Talented and gifted volunteers take these items and perform the necessary repairs to transform the units into usable items for our clients. Without this transformation, the items would be useless.

Last year, Boeing donated two sets of double-wide trailers to HHH. When we pulled them onto our lot, I’m sure some of our neighbors thought we were going to establish an eyesore for them. But over time and with lots of hard work from Jim Snodgrass and others, those trailers have been transformed into 4,320 square feet of usable space for the Heavenly Treasures Gift Shop and class rooms. The “before” and “after” pictures document this remarkable transformation.

The volunteers for the Gift Shop worked very hard to move all of their goods and fixtures from the main HHH building to the new facility across the parking lot. They did a great job and their first day of business in the new facility was conducted on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014. Please take some time to come out to HHH to visit the new facilities for the Gift Shop. You might recognize the carpet when you do. It was donated from the Northrock Theater.

Another transformation is currently in progress for a recent donation of a building in the Oaklawn area. This building was most recently used for night club activities and suffered some fire damage last year. Ben Keller and Daryl Anderson have spear-headed the work to clean up the property. Stay tuned for the progress of this transformation for the building to be used for God’s glory!

Thank you for your support and prayers for the ministry of His Helping Hands. Our commitment to the Lord is to continue to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many as we can, so they can be transformed into His image!

Dennis McKay is an artist who enjoys painting portraits, landscapes and still life in his favorite medium, “oils”. He is well known for his brilliant palette and bright paintings.

Dennis was born in Chicago, Illinois and was raised in Kansas. Dennis began drawing when he was in grade school and began attending watercolor and oil painting classes around 1959. He continued to draw and do oil paintings on his own until 1961 when he began Wichita Heights High School where he spent four years studying drawing, watercolor, oil painting and sculpturing.

In 1969 Dennis studied at Longstreet Commercial Art School and completed the one year course in 1970. He continued painting at home until 1983, painting a few oil paintings for family and friends, when his children’s activities began to take up most of his free time.

Since retiring from Cessna in 2006, Dennis has had more time to explore other interests in his life. He had a renewed passion for art and started taking oil painting classes, studying with Marty Ferguson, Mary Binford Miller, Jim Clements, Virginia Grass Simmons, David Vollbracht and Brian Hinkle.

Dennis has become a member of Kansas Academy of Oil Painters and Kansas Art Guild. His work has won numerous awards over the past few years with paintings he has exhibited at The Wichita Garden Show, Wichita Century II, Wichita Center for the Arts, Gallery 12, Mead Gallery, Vintera Gallery, Presbyterian Manor, Masonic Home, Russell's Original Art Review, Kansas State Fair and National Small Oil Painting Exhibition.

This is Dennis’ second exhibit in Central Christian’s Gallery, and is a salute to those who are currently serving or have served in our armed forces. For a complete look at his portfolio, check out his website at dennismckayart.com.

18 – twentysomething?20 – thirtysomething?

At CCC, it is very easy to get “lost in the crowd.” One of our primary passions is that no one do life alone!

It’s time for you to take a chance to connect!Whether you are single or married, here are two options:

Thresholdis a group of 18–twentysomethings that meet onThursday evenings at 7:30 in the C3 Youth Center

on the NE corner of our campus.

Elevateis a group of twenty & thirtysomethings thatmeet Sunday evenings at 6:30 in The Summit(entrance #13 on the N side of the building).

Both are “mid-sized” groups of 40–60+ young adultsand growing! Find more details at www.ccc.org.

CCC HOME. IMPROVEMENT.

October is Pastor

Appreciation Month!

We have an amazing group of men who serve as pastors here at Central! And this month is a great time to let them know just how much we appreciate them!! Please take a moment to send a word of encouragement to those who have impacted your life. A call, an email, a card in the mail — just a simple gesture can mean so much. Let’s let them know they have been a blessing in their service to the Lord.
