Facebook recently released the most talked about topics on their service in 2014. Here is the top 10:

Comedian Robin WilliamsThe Super Bowl (seems always to be a top ten topic!)

Sports, politics, death and crisis sent people running to the social media outlets. We ask questions, offer comments, take stands and argue with dissenters (which is why some call it “anti-social” media!) Putting aside the often hateful and personal attacks, most communication and open dialogue is good, productive and helpful.

Every time we open our Bibles, we know that God is communicating with us. Sometimes we smile, other times we grit our teeth with conviction. Some passages bring hope, others tears. Some chapters spur us on to action; while many produce contemplation and meditation.

But being in His Word is always good, always productive and always helpful. I encourage you to keep up with friends and family on Facebook. But don’t neglect doing a little “face” time with God every day through your Bible reading and prayer time.

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they

provide we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 niv)

Imagine if you were introducing the Savior of the world.Wouldn’t you make it a gala event, calling in the media andgiving the Lord the “red-carpet treatment”? God doesn’t work thatway. His idea of an announcer would come in the form of a guy that mostpeople would find repugnant. John the Baptist lived outside of the mainstream religious culture, yet his message was more timelythan any other.

There may be no wooden or golden idols in your home, such as the ancient Israelites struggled with, but chances are, there are significant idols in your heart. These idols can look like normal, everyday concerns about security, financial stability, desire for attention or affection, but can easily become the ugly reality of anxiety, greed, and seeking approval of man, rather than God.

In this 6-week study, Kyle Idleman addresses the issue of idolatry in the lives of believers by asking insightful questions that will help you determine which false gods are striving to sit on the throne of your heart.

Cost is $12 for the book.

When John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of Jesus, he sent hisdisciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimedto the poor.”

Apply “The Story” Through LifeGroups Our sermon series of “The Story” has been a wonderful opportunity to learn and be reminded of God’s story of redemption from the beginning of time. LifeGroups present the opportunity to dig deeper and make application for God’s truth in everyday life, and make new friends in the process. “The Story” will continue through the first weekend in May, with the New Testament beginning the weekend of March 1. If you haven’t begun reading “The Story,” books are still available for $5. You can jump in where the study is currently, and it will be easy to catch up as the book is broken down into 31 chapters. To sign up for a group, go to ccc.org/lifegroups, fill out a form in the lobby, or contact Lynn Eby at [email protected] or Craig Tucker [email protected]. Another option for deep application and knowledge through teaching and discussion are our Growth Classes which meet on Sunday mornings at 8:45 & 10:00. Locations and age groups are listed at ccc.org. As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him. (Psalm 18:30)

As we look forward and ready our hearts for Passover, let me be the first to wish you a happy new spiritual year. In preparation for the season of our redemption I encourage you to consider, Passover faith.

I believe everyone practices some form of faith. Whether you are an atheist or an evolutionist, agnostic or an existentialist, you have faith in some thing.

The author of the book of Hebrews describes a very different kind of faith…a saving faith; faith in the preserving of the soul. Likewise, Moses, in the book of Exodus, writes about a saving faith exercised by our forefathers, as God revealed His great plan of redemption.

God commanded the families of Israel to secure a lamb for a sacrifice and bring it into their homes. This was the Passover lamb—the Korban Pesach—to be sacrificed at sundown on the day 14th day of the Hebrew month of Abib.

Through Moses, God gave the nation of Israel very specific and detailed instructions that they were to keep the lamb in their homes until the evening of the sacrifice. Over the course of four days, they were to inspect the lamb and make sure it was without spot or blemish. At twilight, on the 14th of Abib, the lambs were to be publicly sacrificed before the entire assembly of Israel.

Even though the entire nation was commanded to sacrifice the lambs, each family was

Passover Faithby Hubie Shorb, Congregational Leader, L’Chaim B’Yeshua

responsible to apply the blood of their personal lamb upon the door posts of their homes as a sign of faith in God.

It was a saving faith, this could not be more clear. The illustration could not be more poignant. Did God reward the nation of Israel with salvation because they worked so hard and so diligently to secure the lamb, keep the lamb, and then sacrifice the lamb? Of course not! They were spared judgment, death, because of saving faith.

“Works” was never part of the salvation equation and God never intended that the Torah-the first five books in the Old Testament-be kept for salvation. It has always been, and remains, about saving faith, Passover faith.

In the 11th chapter of the book of Hebrews, the writer, in analyzing the “heroes” of our faith points out they all possessed a saving faith; in that they all looked forward to the coming Messiah and what He would do. Today, we look back with a saving faith at what the Messiah has done for us… Same faith!

By faith Moses, when he was born was hidden for three months by his parents. By faith Moses, when he had grown up refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. By faith he left Egypt, by faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood so that he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.

There is a theme here that we do not want to miss: the connection between saving faith

and Passover. Because Moses had saving faith he kept the Passover. Today, because we have saving faith, we likewise remember and keep the Passover.

As we eagerly anticipate the coming season of Passover, the season of our redemption, I pray that you have a saving faith in God’s Lamb of Salvation, our precious, Messiah, Jesus. n

To follow Jesus, his followers needed to know himdeeply...in a way that would change not just theirthoughts, but their hearts, their pursuits and their lives.Jesus wanted to be the center, the joy, the “bread” andsustenance of their lives. As Jesus continued his ministry,he began to reveal more about who he was and whyhe had come.

Page 10: March 2015 cc:journal

Recently, I was reading the Message version of the book of Romans, and these words jumped out at me, “Your task is to single-mindedly serve Christ.” (Romans 14:18). As I began to mediate and reflect upon these words, I asked myself what it means to single-mindedly serve Christ. I realized that to be single-minded is to have a singular purpose or focus on something. To single-mindedly serve Christ means that I am to serve Him without any of my own agenda or personal stuff getting in the way. I began to experience conviction that I am often double-minded. I let my human desires, my personal agendas, my human wants, “me”, “myself”, and “I,” get in the way of single-mindedly serving Christ.

To help keep myself in check, I have started a new thing each day. I start my day praying that I will single-mindedly serve Christ today. I pray that I will die to my selfish wants and desires and be all about His higher ways. I pray that He will develop true humility in my life that will keep my pride in check.

So what does this look like? When I drive to work and I find myself getting frustrated with the slow driver in front of me, I pause and pray. I say, “Lord, help me to have

my mind set upon you right now and not on my personal agendas. Remind me to take a deep breath, realize that You are in control, and set my focus upon You and not the slow car in front of me. ” It helps me get back to having a proper mindset. When I go to work, and I see another colleague getting recognition or praise for a job well done, I pause and say, “Lord, thank You for blessing this person and helping them partner with me in ministry to further Your kingdom.” Whenever selfishness, anger, envy, jealousy, lust, bitterness creep in, I try to pause and ask myself, “Am I being single-minded or double-minded?” When I can check the motives of my heart and be free to be about God’s kingdom and not my own, then I will experience the fullness of God’s blessing and joy in my life.

I have to let go of my insecurities and fears, and trust that God’s ways are better than my own. He is enough! When I realize that I don’t need anything external to validate me, I am free to truly

love others. My validation comes because I am created by God and He has a plan and purpose for my life. My purpose is to single-mindedly pursue the purposes that God has for me and to reflect all the glory back to Him. n

Behind the scenes, under the radar of politics or religiouscourts, a dark power was brewing. It was the same evilthat had stalked God’s people from the beginning ofcreation, and who was bent in destroying God’s plan for them. It found an opening amongJesus’ intimate circle of followers and beganto fester until...

We Prayed that PlaceOut of Here!

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformedby the renewing of your mind. romans 12:2

Continued on page 15

PAULDOHMhishelpinghands

The pattern of this world can lead us into all kinds of trouble, including lewd and lascivious behavior—the kind of behavior you find at night clubs and strip joints. But God is faithful to rescue us from these types of temptations and will transform us by the renewing of our minds.

God is currently transforming a building in Oaklawn that was previously used as a night club, into one that will be used for His glory. The building was donated to His Helping Hands last year and is presently being renovated for use as a Thrift Store to benefit the Fresh Hope program. A building that was once a place of abuse and degradation of women will soon be used to encourage and help women overcome their barriers to educational, vocational and spiritual success. Only God can bring about these types of transformations.

The concept of the Thrift Store is part of HHH’s commitment to good stewardship over the items that are donated to the ministry. Most of the items donated to HHH are given to needy families, and this will not change. Only non-essential items and any excess of essential items (e.g. clothing, knick-knacks, odd pieces of furniture, etc.) will be taken to the Thrift Store. All proceeds from the Thrift Store will be used to fund future expansion of the Fresh Hope program which is designed to help single moms escape the poverty cycle.

Another clarification needs to be made regard-ing the Thrift Store. The opening of the Thrift Store will not affect the present operation of the Heavenly Treasures Gift Shop, which is

located on the HHH campus. The Gift Shop is designed to market another segment of non-essential items, such as collectibles, antiques, jewelry, gift items and large pieces of furniture. The Gift Shop continues to be an important

14

part of the ongoing funding and sustainability for the HHH ministry.

The present plan is to open the Thrift Store the first of April. In addition to the volunteers from Central Christian who have been and will be involved with the operation of the Thrift Store, Countryside Christian Church has ex-pressed an interest in partnering with us in this venture. As customers come to the Thrift Store, volunteers will take the opportunity to minister and pray with them if they desire. It will be exciting to see how this operation will impact the Oaklawn community. Neighbors we have spoken with have told us they are thrilled that the night club is gone and that something positive for the community is taking its place.
