Thousands of pupils will participate in the Cultural Festival.

Starting today the annual five-day event involves more than 3000 primary and intermediate pupils in more than 70 perfor-mance groups such as kapahaka.

This festival is driven by hard-working teachers, together with a few paid staff, who give up time to organise the festival.

Boasting a spectacular smor-gasbord of multicultural perfor-mances, a Wearable Art Pageant and Visual Art Exhibition.

Cultural Festival is a unique and colourful stage show that celebrates the many vibrant cul-tures in our schools and Aote-aroa and has been held annually since it’s initiation in 1981 (with

the exception of 2011 due to the earthquakes).

The festival involves a steer-ing committee, over 200 volun-

teers, 60 primary and intermedi-ate schools, one long-term event manager and over 20 short-term contractors.

The Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival offers one of the only children’s multi-cultural experiences offered on a city-wide scale, which has been developed from grass roots level in Christchurch.

When Cotswold pupils were asked about their upcoming performance Ashton Thack-well said: “I am going to try and break the stage by being as loud as I can go.”

Other pupils were “excited about being a leader” and “look-ing forward to representing the school.”

Jessica Harris is “excited about starting and leading the songs” and Janaya Pekapo “just can’t wait to have fun.”

Cotswold School is perform-ing in the final concert on Friday evening.

The community board contributed $500,000 towards the project, as a re-sult of two applications by the board to the city council’s Capital Endow-ment Fund.

A joint working group had been meeting since January.

It considered several key areas of assessment and applied measurement criteria – examples include delivery, desirability and potential to enhance the mall.

In September 2014, the city

council resolved to rebuild the com-munity centre and library after as-sessing the options of rebuild versus repair.

The library and community centre was deemed unsafe after the 2011 earthquake.

▌▌ IN BRIEF

Youth fund rulesThe Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has made some changes to the eligibility rules around its Youth Development Fund. A discussion was held regarding the suggestion that the number of applications per person be limited to three, however, on reviewing the implications the board resolved only one application per person is permitted per year and the upper age limit for the fund be increased from 20 to 22.

Work has began on Papanui Rd to repair damaged wastewater infrastructure.

The road between Clare Rd and Derby St will have extensive work done to repair sections of the earthquake-damaged wastewater main and laterals, this will take about two months to complete.

The work may result in in-creased dust, noise and vibration between 7am-6pm while the repairs are being carried out.

Some residents may have their driveways blocked for around a week, if this is going to hap-pen they will be notified prior by either a door knock or by a note in the letter box.

Two-way traffic will be main-tained on Papanui Rd around the work site.

There will be no right turning out of Derby St onto Papanui Rd for the duration of the work.

There will be no right turning out of Rastrick St onto Papanui Rd for the duration of the work.

Cycle lane closures will also be in place on Papanui Rd to make room for the work site.

Resident access may be re-stricted for up to three days while wastewater lateral repairs are under way.

Parking on the street will not be available immediately next to the work area.

Driveway access may be restrict-ed for about one week.

Some sections of the wastewa-ter main are more damaged than others, this means a number of different repair methods will be used to fully renew the wastewa-ter system.

If you have any queries or concerns about the work, contact Fletcher SCIRT by phoning 0800 444 919 or by emailing [email protected]

Teaching Mandarin: Preparing young

How long have you been teaching?

This is my third year teaching Chinese (Mandarin) at Middleton Grange. This is my second year full time. The first year was just four hours a week.

Where did you study?I did my Bachelor of Arts

majoring in Chinese at Canterbury University. I then did my Graduate Diploma of teaching at Victoria, I didn’t go to Wellington for that I did it all online.

What is your background with the Chinese language?

Hmm, good question. I never learnt Chinese at school but had a lot of friends from Japan and Korea, so I knew that I worked well with international students. My sister encouraged me to do it mainly because she was living in

China at the time. She was teach-ing English over there. I soon realised that more Kiwis need to learn this language.

Have you wanted to be a teacher when you were young?

When I was young I said I didn’t want to become a teacher, my mum is a teacher so is my brother and my sister is too, I guess it is in the blood.

So basically your whole family are teachers, what does your dad do?

[Laughing] He is an engineer, not a teacher.

So if you didn’t want to be a teacher what changed your mind?

The increasing number in Chinese-speaking people in New Zealand means that for Kiwis, once they learn it, they can actu-ally use it here, they don’t have to go overseas to use it. It’s really important for Kiwis to know there are so many opportunities on our back doorstep. It is a real language of the future and that made me want to teach it to people.

What is your best memory from school?

It wasn’t the academic side, even though I was pretty good at that. For me, it was all the extra stuff we used to do. I was always working with overseas students. The extracurricular activities were great too. I enjoyed the academic stuff but not as much as the sport, music and art stuff.

Were there many Chinese-

speaking kids when you were at school?

I went Middleton Grange, now I teach there, I loved it so much that I came back. We have an interna-tional college that had around 200 odd students before the earth-quakes. It dropped down to about 100, but now it is coming back up which is great.

What was it like learning a different language?

I had only learnt French briefly up until year 10 I think. I thought I would be able to be fluent a lot quicker, but it’s really cool, getting your head around the characters and symbols. I learnt Spanish at uni as well but I find Chinese easier. I kept thinking about Span-ish words as Chinese words so it all got pretty confusing there for a while.

Were you born in Christchurch?

Born in Auckland, moved to Australia for a couple of years then settled in Christchurch.

What was it like growing up with your siblings?

Because I was the youngest I was often left out by the others, I did a lot of playing by myself. Now we hang out a lot and get on, age doesn’t matter anymore.

What was the last thing you all did together?

We all go to the same church every weekend. We went to Castle Hill about a month ago for a weekend and caught up, went walking, hung out. It was good.

Annelise Borger is on a mission to teach Mandarin Chinese to students. Next year

she will begin teaching it at Emmanuel Christian School and hopes to inspire other teachers to follow in her footsteps. Reporter Andrew King speaks with her

Kiwis for the future

Why work for Christian schools, are you religious?

Yes, I’m a Christian. That’s why I wanted to work for Middleton. It has an awesome supportive en-vironment. You get to teach what you believe and not what is just in your head but in your heart as well.

How does that come into your teaching style?

Here at Middleton we have a big focus on making people feel welcome, we don’t want to leave anyone out. By learning about different cultures we can make ev-eryone feel more included. Some Chinese characters can point back to biblical times which give it a special little link for us. We want to tell other Christians the ‘good news’ so it is another way we can

share the gospel with them.Do the students respond well

to that?Yes they do so we can make that

instant connection. Share your cultures together so we can ac-knowledge that, making a bridge between the two cultures.

The programme will have you moving around four schools, that will be difficult won’t it?

I guess it will be. I am the only one that can do it at the mo-ment. I don’t know many other people like me. I will be trying to train people up as I go. The other schools are only starting with an hour or two each week so it will be hard at the start. At the mo-ment I have an assistant, he helps me out a lot. He makes sure I am

on the right track, teaching them proper Chinese.

Are you married?Yeah, I got married at the end of

2013. My older sister in her early 30s got married in September that year, then it was me in December, then my brother in January.

All three of you got married in a five-month period, were they all in Christchurch?

They were all in Christchurch. I think our guests had to pick and chose which one they went to (laughing).

Do you have any children of your own?

I don’t have any kids myself – not while teaching. The principal said I can’t have any while I am teaching as well (laughing).

Where do you see it taking you?

I hope to build the programmes here at Middleton Grange through years 7-13. It is currently only for years 7-9 at the moment, but I hope to have that going by 2019.

The other schools – Hillview Christian and Aidanfield Chris-tian Schools will start next year and go from years 7-10 then hopefully they feed into Middle-ton Grange.  Also I would like to take the years 11, 12 and 13 over to China for a class trip.

Hopefully you can find another person in that class to help you teach Chinese to future students.

Yeah, that would be great. I would love to be the inspiration that gets another teacher in Chi-nese – we need more of them in New Zealand.

IN CLASS: Annelise Borger catches the attention of her class with Chinese characters. Next year she will have four different classes to teach.

Hundreds of Samoan university students have arrived in Christ-church for competitions and celebration of Samoan culture.

So’otaga 2015 will run from Au-gust 28 to September 2 and feature academic, cultural and sporting competitions and a Christian rally.

University of Canterbury Samoan Students’ Association president Tumama Tu’ulua said the Christ-church event is the biggest ever gathering of university Samoan student associations from across New Zealand.

The 35th conference will draw students from Victoria University of Wellington, Waikato University, Auckland University, AUT and the University of Canterbury, which is hosting this year’s event for the first time since 2010.

“Usually around 130 students participate, but this year we are expecting more than 220 students – I think they are attracted by the op-portunity to visit the South Island and see what Christchurch has to offer,” Tu’ulua said.

Tu’ulua said the event is a life-changing experience for many Samoan students – especially South Islanders.

Tickets for the Cultural Night tonight cost $5 (plus booking fee) and are available online from Even-topia – all other events are free.

A detailed schedule is on the UCSA website http://ucsa.org.nz/events/sootaga/

Selwyn House School has put on a performance to remember. This year’s production of Peter Pan gave pupils a chance to stretch their creative wings and take flight. The challenge set by director Therese Bierwirth was for the pupils to use their imaginations to captivate the audience with their performance without using ropes, pulleys, harnesses and other contraptions.

GRASSROOTS SPORT

BY KYLE KNOWLES

St Bede’s student Kaelan Boyce is the Australian Golden Gloves champion.

He won the under-52kg divi-sion at the championships held in Brisbane last weekend.

The 16-year-old beat New South Wales’ Bradley Collins in the final.

Kaelan said it was a good fight.“It was pretty fun I smoked

him all three rounds. I was just moving forward and making sure he didn’t have any room to move.”

With that belt around his waist he is now in Russia this week at the World Junior Boxing Championships.

He was due to fly out over the weekend for the champs which start overnight on Wednesday.

Kaelan said the win in Austra-lia has given him the confidence to go a long way in the World Championships.

Kaelan’s Redwood Boxing Club coach, Julian Scully said he performed very well in Australia and it was great preparation for the big championships.

“He went very well, he put plenty of pressure on and didn’t give the opponent any chance to get into the fight.

“He’s definitely got the confi-

dence, he’s not losing that. But now he’s got a tough job ahead of him but we’ve had a

full preparation and he is con-fident.”

Scully said the big work-on for Kaelan has been his footwork which is always improving.

Kaelan only took up boxing four years ago and was a national champion within a year of his first fight.

He needed to raise about $6000 and had more than $1500 worth of donations through a Givealittle page.

Kaelan is one of two Christ-

church teens heading to the world champs.

The other is Junior Acero from the A-Town Boxing Club who is a student at Shirley Boys’ High School.

Junior was also at the Austra-lian Golden Gloves last weekend where he finished second, being beaten by Ben Cameron-Hands in the final of the under-50kg weight division.

The draw for the world champs has yet to take place and both boxers won’t find out who they are fighting until they arrive in Russia.

Five of the Nor’West’s best mar-tial artists have been named in the New Zealand team to compete at the Goju World Karate Open Grade Championships.

The event is being held in Auck-land in November which is the first time it has been held in New Zealand.

The five selected were Jade Tay-lor (right) of Redwood, Adriana Nicolaie of Mairehau, Sophie Sav-ill of St Albans and siblings Nadia and Reid Edmond of Papanui.

All of the karatekas are mem-bers of the Jitsueikai Club in Tuam Street.

Michelle Taylor, mother of Jade, said she was very proud of her daughter for making it.

She said Jade was pretty proud herself too and was stoked when she heard the news.

The Papanui High School stu-dent has been doing karate since she was six and went along after her cousin was already a part of a karate club.

Have you experienced any of these breathing difficulty symptoms?• Disturbed sleep• Erratic heartbeats*

• Feeling anxious and uptight• Upset gut/nausea• Chest pains*• Shattered confidence• Tired all the time• Achy muscles and joints• Dizzy spells* or feeling spaced out• Irritability or hypervigilance• Frequent yawning and sighing• Breathing discomfort*• Pins and needles• Feelings of ‘air hunger’

*Check with your doctor if you experience these symptoms. These questions are asked on the website

www.BradCliff.com. BradCliff was started by North Island physiotherapists Dinah Bradley and Tania Cliffton Smith, who specialise in hyperventilation and anxiety treatment. Their website notes one in 10 people experience some form of breathing pattern disorder or chronic over breathing at some time in their lives, resulting in a range of disturbing or frightening symptoms puzzling to you and your doctor.

You feel unwell because of overbreathing,

and overbreathing makes you feel unwell. A vicious cycle is established, which is a major stress all by itself. This is experienced currently by many Cantabrians, says Ietje van Stolk of Physical Sense Gym & Physio. As she explains, it is normal to breathe fast and in the upper chest when we are in danger and fight or flight is needed. We know all about that here, due to the earthquakes. Normally, once the danger is gone, our breathing should restore itself within a couple of days. We would then be using the diaphragm for our normal nonstressed

breathing. We have been having a hard time restoring our breathing pattern here in Canterbury because every time our body tried to achieve that, the next aftershock came rolling in. Even though the aftershocks have significantly diminished, some people’s fight or flight mode breathing has become chronic, or habitual, Ietje says. And, as she points out, using the wrong muscles for breathing means these overworked muscles cause headaches, neck pain and jaw pain.

With fast upper chest breathing, sighing and yawning, the resulting disturbance of our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels can give us the feeling we are not able to control our own body. One moment you are are feeling fine, next moment your chest feels tight, you feel out of breath, your heart beats erratically and you may even experience dizziness and/or tingling. Very scary if you do not understand what is happening. No wonder this causes anxiety. Not being the boss over our own

body makes us anxious, anxiety feeds the faulty breathing pattern, and so it goes on. The BradCliff physiotherapists have established a national network of practitioners that regularly train together and can help you overcome this problem.

Recently, they have received several queries through their website from people who are suffering from pain that began either suddenly or over

a short period of time and want to know what they should do.

“Some of our clients suffer from a muscle strain that simply won’t heal; others get sudden pain when they are picking up a

jug or reaching into the back of the car. Sometimes the cause of these symptoms is an injured tendon.

“Tendons are the tough fibres that connect our muscles to our bones. Most tendon injuries (tendinopathies) occur near the joints, especially the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. Although it can seem as if a tendon injury has happened suddenly, we

find that often, it is the result of many tiny tears to the tendon which have happened over time. Many of our clients who suffer from tendinopathy have to make the same motions over and over in their jobs, sports, or daily activites, but anyone can suffer from an injured tendon.

“They come to us when the area affected feels sore, stiff, is losing strength and stopping them from doing the things they want to do. Their pain may get worse when they use the affected area and they often have pain and stiffness during the night or first thing in the morning.

“If you have symptoms similar to these, what can you do about it? If you suspect you’ve damaged a tendon, it’s important to seek help from a medical professional. Tendon injuries are commonly treated

by physiotherapists like us. We will do a thorough assessment of your injury and then work with you using a variety of different methods to get you back to doing the things you want to do.

“One of the first questions we are asked is, how long it will take a client to recover? This varies widely, depending on many different factors. Generally after you’ve had an initial assessment with your physio, your physio will discuss your treatment plan with you and follow up appointments are scheduled as and when needed.

“If you think you might have injured your tendon, contact us at one of our clinics: Bishopdale on 03 360 3606, or Hereford Street (opposite the Arts Centre) on 03 961 0236. Both have free car parking. We are here to diagnose, treat and help prevent future damage.”

We will do a thorough assessment of your injury and then work with you using a variety of different methods to get you back to doing the things you want to do.

The team at Muscle People have been providing a professional and personal physiotherapy care service to

the people of Canterbury since 1998.

BY CHRISTINE GRANT

In the third installment of the series on the memorial avenues of Papanui, we look at Alpha Ave, Hartley Ave, Halton St, Lansbury Ave and Tillman Ave.

Alpha AveThis was formerly known as

St Andrew Ave because of its proximity to St Andrew’s Col-lege.

The change of name is thought to have been because of confusion with St Andrews Square of which it was the continuation.

St Andrews Ave first appeared in street directories in 1925.

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and in the sys-tem of Greek numerals, it has a value of one.

In English, the noun ‘alpha’ is used as a synonym for ‘begin-ning’ or ‘first’ (in a series) so was this to be the first in a series of streets with Greek names or did it symbolise the beginning of St Andrews Square?

Hartley AveThis was originally St

Andrews Tce, also named for its proximity to St Andrew’s College.

It was re-named in 1938 after Leonard Brannon Hart who lived in Hawthorne St.

His property was subdivided to form these streets.

Leonard was a descendant of

Michael and Mary Hart who had arrived in Lyttelton on the ’Cressy’ in 1850.

Halton StHalton Rd was named after

“Lady Halton” the estate of Joseph Ick in Salop, Shropshire, England.

Joseph’s son, Charles Ick lived in Papanui Rd from 1870.

He was the mayor of Christ-church in 1879 and 1880.

Charles arrived in Dunedin in 1857 and had a drapery busi-ness before taking up farming at Waikouaiti.

He came to Christchurch in 1870 and was an auctioneer until he retired in 1883.

Halton Rd became Halton St in 1936.

Lansbury AveNamed after George Lans-

bury (1859-1940) a British Labour politician, socialist Christian pacifist and newspa-per editor.

He was leader of the British Labour Party 1931-1935.

Lansbury Ave first appeared in street directories in 1943.

Why was a street in Papanui named after an English politi-cian?

Tillman AveTillman Ave was formerly

School Lane and School Rd, named because it led to the Blighs Road School (later Waimairi School).

School Lane first appeared in

street directories in 1929 and became School Rd in 1939.

As there were other School Rds the name was changed to Tillman Ave after Harry Till-man who was the chairman of the school committee, and a member of both the Papanui and the Christchurch Beautify-

ing Associations.  He was also the man behind

these Memorial Avenues, organising service groups to plant the trees, having the plaques made and canvassing the streets of those that had lost the most war casualties, for funding.

Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Matauranga celebrates all adult learning, whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing

for further study, improving life skills or having fun.

Jo Lake, director of Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa.

It is predicted that New Zealand will be home to over a million retirees by 2035, which could mean a surge in demand for learning opportunities such as those provided by Menz Sheds. Canterbury can claim a whopping 25 Men’s Sheds, under the national MENZSHED umbrella. Menz Sheds’ objectives are to bring men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh and work on practical tasks individually or as a group.

Adult learners of all ages and backgrounds report benefits like better self-esteem, greater tolerance, confidence and career prospects.

WEA is running a promotion where participants in a course during Adult Learners’ Week go into a draw to receive a free place in a course of their choice in Term 4. In addition, there are free sessions of Israeli dancing, a lecture by professor Simon

Taking place between the September 7 and 13, it is supported by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO and incorporates

International Literacy Day on September 8.In Christchurch, the week starts with a

Networking Breakfast at CPIT’s Visions restaurant, kindly supported by the ACE

Kingham on Is There A Role For Cycling in the Future City on September 9 and a travel talk by Wendy Butcher, Wandering Around Europe in A Van on September 10.

Aoraki Polytechnic, in partnership with Skills Update Training Institute, offer a fully subsidised programme designed to give students the freedom to study at home. The National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3 mixes distance and face-to-face learning, delivering a programme that can be structured around your lifestyle; workshops and tutorials are scheduled during week-day evenings and weekends.

Learn something new and meet new people. Take part in one of the wide range of courses at Papanui High School. Term 4 begins the week of October 19. From art to yoga and everything in between, regardless of your age or interest, you will find something to tempt you.

Immaculate presentation and a delight to view 1/42 St Martins Road, St MartinsAuction: September 10, 2015 from 1pm, Harcourts Grenadier, 98 Moorhouse Avenue (unless sold prior)2 bedrooms | 1 bathroom | 1 living room | 1-car garage | Listing number#: BE192392

Let The Glenn Miller Orchestra take you on a sentimental journey.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra with Musical Director Rick Gerber, return to NZ following their triumphant 2013 tour when they took the country by storm in what was one of the largest international concert tours in recent years. The orchestra will again perform nationwide at 22 different locations between Kerikeri in the north and Invercargill down south.

After 26 sell-out shows in 2013, the Glenn Miller Orchestra returns to New Zealand from October 8 to November 8, 2015.

This time, the band honours the year of the ANZAC Centenary on a whistle stop tour to 22 different locations around New Zealand.

With this great lineup of America’s finest musicians including Moonlight Serenade Singers and the Broadway Swing Dancers. In the Spirit of ANZAC, the concert will also feature iconic music and songs from the years of the Great War.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra occupies the whole show! That’s 2-hours of Glenn Miller's great music that continues to captivate millions. Re-live dozens of the classics played from the original arrangements - hits that include Chattanooga Choo Choo, A String of Pearls, Tuxedo Junction, Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug and the greatest Miller hit of all time, In The Mood.

Don't miss this out! Plays Horncastle Arena on Saturday 31st October, 7.30pm. Tickets on sale now at Ticketek.
