Michigan, California and Wisconsin all claim PaulBunyan and his Big Blue Ox, the University of Kentuckyclaims Big Blue Madness during basketball season, but littleRhode Island is the only state to claim the Big Blue Bug.
The Big Blue Bug, or, as he is officially named, NibblesWoodaway, is the giant blue termite that sits atop Route 95South in Providence, R.I. It is the unofficial mascot for thestate, the invention of the Goldman family, the owners ofNew England Pest Control.
For more than 70 years, New England Pest Control hashelped the locals control their insect infestations. For nearly30 years, the company has been much better known for itsdistinctive landmark hovering over the highway. Nibbles hasbeen a Rhode Island institution since 1980, giving Hasbro’s
Mr. Potato Head a run for his icon money. Some 58 ft. long, 9 ft. tall and weighing in at two tons, the
termite is known throughout the nation. From movies(“Dumb and Dumber”) to cartoons, to TV and newspapers, architecture, design literature and more, the Bug has causedjoy, smiles and more than a few car accidents.
RIDOT Pulls the SwitchEvery year before Dec. 1, the bug is lit up with a special
ceremony for Christmas. This year, for its 17th AnnualHoliday Lighting, the Big Blue Bug honored the engineeringIway team at Rhode Island Department of Transportation(RIDOT).
During construction of the nearly finished $610 millionhighway that has improved traffic dramatically throughoutthe state’s capital since it was opened in phases two years

Gov. Moves Funds for Patriots BridgeBy Glen JohnsonAP POLITICAL WRITER
BOSTON (AP) MassachusettsGov. Deval Patrick moved Dec. 4to defuse a potential political timebomb by announcing he will nolonger use federal economic stim-ulus money to pay for a pedestri-an footbridge sought by the bil-lionaire owner of the NewEngland Patriots.
An administration aide briefedon the decision said the $9 millionproject “will be funded with othernon-ARRA dollars,’’ using theacronym for the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act.The person spoke on condition ofanonymity before the decisionwas formally announced.
The reversal came just threeweeks after the MetropolitanPlanning Organization approvedusing stimulus money for theproject despite criticism fromstate legislators and theMassachusetts Republican Party.Patrick is up for re-election nextfall, and another of his critics wasTreasurer Timothy Cahill, a for-mer Democrat now running forgovernor as an independent.
A month before the approval, team owner Robert Kraft and hiswife, Myra, made the maximumallowable campaign contributionsto Patrick and the MassachusettsDemocratic Party. In the case ofthe governor, that was $500 each;in the case of the party, that was$5,000 each.
A year earlier, Robert Kraftgave similar donations to Patrickand the party as the state was des-ignating his property a specialgrowth district. The donationswere Kraft’s first to the governorand first in four years to the party.About the same time, Patrick wasseen with Kraft in a luxury box atGillette Stadium.
At the time, Patrick denied aquid pro quo. He did so again lastmonth, telling The AssociatedPress, “There’s no ‘there’ there.’’
The governor added: “We’remaking these decisions on themerits. ... There are others whohave asked for investment ofRecovery Act dollars or federalbonding dollars who have con-tributed to us and we’ve said nobecause those projects did notstand on their own.’’
The Krafts are proposing to use
a 500-acre site across the streetfrom Gillette Stadium for anoffice park. The planned bridgewould connect parking lots onboth sides of busy Route 1 andallow patrons of the office site toreach not only the stadium, butalso the Krafts’ Patriot Placeentertainment plazas.
Patrick said the project wouldcreate 4,500 permanent jobs and4,000 construction jobs. He pro-claimed the project “shovel-ready’’ during the Nov. 13 inter-view, but the aide said Friday thefootbridge funding was beingswitched because it cannot bebuilt quickly enough.
Instead, the stimulus moneywill be spent on other work.
The aide said two other proj-ects in Amherst and Worcesteralso will no longer be financedwith stimulus money but otherfunding. The aide would not iden-tify that funding source.
A Patriots official said the teamwas not involved in the decision.
“That decision is coming fromthe Statehouse. That doesn’taffect us at all. We’re not involvedin that process,’’ said teamspokesman Stacey James.
Designs Considered forNew N.Y.-Vt. BridgeBy Chris CarolaASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP)New Yorkers and Vermontersaffected by the closure of the LakeChamplain Bridge linking the twostates got the opportunity Dec. 12to see six possible designs for anew span and to submit their opin-ions about them.
The designs were put on displayat a series of meetings inTiconderoga, approximately 10miles south of the bridge linkingCrown Point, N.Y., and Addison,Vt. People were asked to fill out asurvey seeking their opinions onthe various bridge designs.
Some residents said they pre-ferred one of two arch designsbecause of their similarities to theexisting bridge. Cathy Robarts, aretired social services worker, saidan arch bridge would fit in betterwith the rural setting.
“This is the country,’’ Robartssaid. “They look more like moun-
tains. The others remind me moreof what you’d see in the city.’’
Also among the designs weretwo flat bridges and two that fea-tured elaborate cables linked totowers.
“I’m willing to accept what theycome up with as long as they usethe input they got here. Give ussome say,’’ said Tom Jaquish, aretired construction worker fromMoriah, N.Y., who attended themorning session with his brotherFred, an IBM engineer fromAddison.
The bridge was closed Oct. 16after being found to be unsafebecause of severe deterioration ofits concrete piers. Closing the2,184-ft. bridge, used by approxi-mately 3,400 vehicles a day, hasdisrupted lives on both sides of theborder, forcing motorists to take100-mi. detours or ride ferries toreach jobs or medical appoint-ments.
“I don’t expect them to just getover it. Their entire lives have beendisrupted,’’ said Diane Lanpher, aVermont state representative fromAddison.
Transportation officials fromboth states and engineers fromHNTB, the Kansas City-based firmthat will design the new bridge, gave a Power Point presentation ofthe six possible designs, then wereavailable to members of the publicwho filled Ticonderoga’s town hallfor the meetings.
The public has until Jan. 11 tosubmit comments on the project.
New York and Vermont officialswill make their choice soon after, and then HNTB’s design team willget to work, with the goal of start-ing construction in the spring andopening the new bridge in the sum-mer of 2011, said James Boni, thebridge project manager for NewYork state’s Department ofTransportation.
Boni said the new bridge willcost between $65 million and $90million, depending the design cho-sen. The new span also will havetwo lanes, but with wider shouldersto accommodate bicyclists.Sidewalks for the new bridge alsoare planned.
The old bridge, opened in 1929,will be demolished with explo-sives, most likely in mid-January,Boni said.
“I’ve been telling people to godown and say goodbye,’’ Lanphersaid.

ago, Nibbles got a bird’s eye view of the thou-sands of workers supervised by RIDOT to buildthe impressive highway.
With 5,200 energy-saving LED holidaylights adorning Nibbles, the R.I. Department ofTransportation team that produced the Iway, assembled once again and performed the annu-al ceremonial lighting honors.
Having watched the entire project from abug’s eye view — and, you can take that literal-ly, because Nibbles was only some 6 ft. from the195W-95S ramp during the entire constructionprocess — the Iway project reached a signifi-cant milestone in November, with the openingof the last highway segment of the relocatedinterchange of I-195 and I-95 in Providence.
“We couldn’t think of a better group of peo-ple to do the honors. The Iway project makesRhode Island better,” said New England Pestowner Steve Goldman.
Two Tons of BugThe bug is exactly 928 times the size of an
actual termite. Each wing is 40 ft. long, each leg 11 ft. longand each antenna seven feet in length.
Without question the largest termite on earth, he was thebrainchild of then-owner Leonard Yale Goldman circa 1979when the company bought its building. Very sharply,Goldman Sr. wanted to make certain that potential customersknew who they were.
According to quahog.org, the bug was made of wire meshand fiberglass over four days in October 1980 at a cost of$30,000.
Originally purple in color, the same as its microscopiccounterpart, the sun soon bleached the bug blue, as it hasremained. Alandmark for traffic reporters fordecades, each major holiday the bug’sdimensions are augmented. First comes a300-lb. Uncle Sam hat and white Styrofoambeard for the 4th of July. On Halloween, onecan see him adorned with a witch’s hat andbroom. At Christmas, he gets a blinking rednose and hundreds of other lights.
His TV credits include Oprah Winfrey andseveral Farrelly Brothers movies. He hasbeen mistaken for “big game” on occasion, when owners found his underside shot upwith buckshot.
When he left his perch for the first time in22 years in 2002, to be repainted, the compa-ny received 500 calls from drivers wonder-ing where he had gone.
Pulling the SwitchAt 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, at corporate
headquarters, 161 O’Connell Street,Providence, owner and president Goldmanjoined RIDOT’s Chief of Construction FrankCorrao, Project Engineer Lambri Zerva,Deputy Director Chuck Alves, ResidentEngineer Raymond Castigliego and ChiefPublic Affairs Officer Dana Alexander-Nolfefor the lighting ceremony on the roof as hun-
dreds of cars whizzed by below.Corrao was the RIDOT executive who actually got to
physically throw the switch. President Goldman was effu-sive in his praise for RIDOT and explained why they werechosen this season.
“Each year, right before Thanksgiving, we select a mem-ber of the community to ceremonially ‘flip the switch’ thatwill light up the Big Blue Bug,” said Goldman. “The princi-pal completion of the Iway made it obvious to us that weshould ask RIDOT to be our guest in turning on the lights.
“Working with the RIDOT was a pleasure (throughout thesix-year process),” said Goldman. “Each of their representa-
tives was professional and courteous. They kept us apprisedof the status of the project, as it pertained to us and madeevery effort to assuage any concerns we may have had at thetime.”
Goldman admitted that he had some concerns during themany years it took to finish the highway, and sometimeswondered if Nibbles’ nose might get bopped by a crane ortwo.
“Of course, we had some concern related to the proximi-ty of the ramp to our building, but we were assured that allwould be well,” he added. “And it turned out fine.
“As we are not a destination business — we service home-owners and businesses at their respectivelocations — there wasn’t any effect on thetraffic coming to us,” said Goldman. “And,as we are already a widely known landmark, some would say, ‘icon,’ the location of theramp now gives drivers traveling 195 Westto 95 South an up close and personal look atNibbles.
“In the end, all turned out well and wecould not be happier with both the projectand our relationship with the great people atRIDOT,” he added.
Alexander-Nolfe agreed, saying, “TheBig Blue Bug is an important and respectedOcean State icon and, while RIDOT hasbeen building the Iway, the Big Blue Bughas been right there with us. While the Iwayproject won’t be completed until 2012, weexpect Nibbles Woodaway to watch over theIway for decades to come. We want to thankNew England Pest Control and all RhodeIslanders for their patience and understand-ing while RIDOT has been busy buildingthis project.”
(This story also can be found onConstruction Equipment Guide’s Web siteat www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)CEG
Nibbles Woodaway, the Big Blue Bug, is fully lit with 5,200 lights, a Rudolph nose and antlers as he overlooks thousands ofdrivers circumventing the new Iway over Providence, R.I., each day this holiday season.
Frank Corrao of RIDOT lights the Big Blue Bug. Cheering him on (L-R) are NewEngland Pest Control owner Steve Goldman; Karen Vecchio, The RDW Group;Lambri Zerva, Iway project manager; Raymond Castigliego, resident engineer;William “Chuck” Alves, deputy director; and RIDOT Chief Public Affairs OfficerDana Alexander-Nolfe.
