Why ONCAMPUS Pathway Programs?

1 2 3 4

US University: 4 Years

Students Have 3 Ways to Study in the US:

A) Direct – Students apply and attend University directly- Most choices and opportunity for students --- but they need Advanced English (>6.5 IELTS for high

ranked schools), Good Grades, SAT Score (Standardized Admissions Test), and they need to fill out applications and do essays well in advance (Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb for September intake the next year)

B) Community College- Lowest cost option; students study for 2 years and then can transfer to university for final 2 years.

Quality is lower (popular for students with lower grades or limited English) and transfer opportunities are limited in terms of geography and not to highly ranked universities

C) Pathways- Best option for students who lack SAT score and are looking to transfer to highly ranked universities

in their major. Variety of scholarships available; students can apply late (late/end July) and study for SAT in program. Students go directly into Year 2 of University after the 1 year Pathway programs.

US Education System – Benefits

The US education system is known for its flexibility and choices to students for a variety of majors across diverse fields

I like to talk with students / parents about 2 main benefits:

(Students prefer the first, Parents the second)

1. CAMPUS LIFE – The American system encourages active campus life through activities, clubs and extracurricular involvement. Living in dorms is a unique part of this experience, and it builds friendships and creates well-rounded and confident students from all over the world.

2. PRACTICAL LEARNING – A key benefit of the US system is its emphasis on applying what students learn and going beyond the textbook. Students take part in internships, work experiences and co-ops, which build the foundation for future careers in their home countries. American multinational companies give students a leg up in their careers.

Location, Major, InternshipsIn my opinion, it is very important to consider location of school (in addition to its strength in your major) rather than just looking at rankings

- Location = opportunity for internships = work experience = strong CV/resume = much better chance to get a good-paying job upon graduation

- For example, I interned at Citibank in Year 2 in Boston and HSBC in Year 3

- For some majors, location is not as important (ie. nursing or biology or psychology) for others, it is critical (ie. computer science – Silicon Valley, California or Boston)

So How do I study in a top US University?

These are the things I recommend to students (listed in order of importance):

- Study hard and make sure you get good grades. This is by far the most important factor in getting acceptance to a top university in the USA.

- Practice and improve your English. Prove it by taking the IELTS or TOEFL.

- Get involved in extracurricular activities. People do not realize how important this is in differentiating students in the USA. Everyone is smart who wants to study at top universities. So be active in things like sports, music, charity work, clubs, leadership events. Try to be different and stand out and think about what your hobbies are!

- If you have planned in advance and can take the SAT, do it as it will open more doors for you. If you don’t have the SAT, or did not get a great score, don’t panic….there are still options for you to progress to highly ranked schools with ONCAMPUS USA programmes.

- Lastly, plan in advance and be organized. It’s a huge process choosing schools and doing all of the documents – for schools and visa. Use an experienced advisor/agency such as Fortrust to help you.
