WHAT came to Vusimuzi Mbatha in adream, turned into an exhilarating realityon Wednesday when he finally took to theskies in a helicopter.

From the passenger seat of the BidvestProteaCoin chopper looking downon the Po-po Molefe informal settlement outside Rus-tenburg, which he calls home, he spoke oftasting freedom.

“My dreams have come true. I neverthought it would happen for me. I feel liber-ated,” he told journalists and local residents.

Before embarking on his 15-minute flight,Mbatha seemed unfazed by the crowd whohad come to see his dream take flight.

Mbatha captured the hearts of peoplearound the country after News24 ran a storyabout the helicopter he built from bits ofscrap metal, and his dream of one day flyinghis home-made aircraft.

News24 readers made numerous pledgesto help Mbatha realise his dream, sayingwhat an inspiration he was.

On Wednesday, dressed in camouflagepants and a beanie, he showed little emotionas he walked around the yard where hishand-made chopper was parked outside hisshack.

He showed his creation to Bidvest Protea

Coin and explained how he had imaginedhis aircraft taking off. Mbatha startedbuilding the helicopter last year. He saidthat during a strike at the nearby mines,he had seen a chopper circling the area.

Shortly afterwards, he began dreamingof flying and decided to build his own air-craft.

On Wednesday, Bidvest made Mbatha’sdream come true when they landed theirown chopper on a dusty football pitch nearMbatha’s shack.

“He is so lucky. Maybe they’ll even givehim a job,” one person in the excited crowdcommented.

Described by residents as a quiet manwho was always on his own, Mbatha walk-ed to the chopper with his arms crossedover his chest, looking at his feet. Hisbrother, Thamsanqa, who provided theisiXhosa translation, walked beside him.

A hint of emotion finally showed onMbatha’s face whenGeorge Tonking of Bid-vest handed him his very own flying uni-form – a blue overall with his name em-broided on it. Mbatha beamed with prideas he was helped into his uniform. Thecrowd screamed its approval and residentswhipped out their cellphones to capture themoment asMbatha posed in his flying gear.

“Nothing like this has ever happened inthis area. Never before have we seen a flyingmachine and today, someone we know andlive with is going to be flying in one,” saida woman with a baby on her hip.

The chopper took off and circled the areaabove a ululating, waving crowd.

“This man has brought growth to this com-munity,” said Israel Mamomane, adding thatMbatha was a role model for the youth.

“He might not be very educated but heshowed us that when you have wisdom, youcan go far.”

Luvuyo Maqwane, ward councillor for thearea, saidMbathawas a hero in the communi-

ty. “He has left a legacy for the people of thisarea. People will now know of Popo Molefe,”the councillor said. Some of the women inthe crowd joked among themselves, sayinghis days as a bachelor were numbered.

But where to from here for Mbatha? Afterinspecting Mbatha’s homemade helicopter, chief operations officer of Bidvest ProteaCoin, Waal de Waal, said it “needed a bitmore work” before it could take to the skies.

The company has offered to help Mbathaland a job so he can earn an income and buildnot just a better helicopter, but a better fu-ture for himself.- News24

BUSINESS mogul and Billion Group chair-person Sisa Ngebulana divulged what hadprompted him to invest in Mthatha duringthe official opening of the town’s biggest mall,BT Ngebs, last Thursday.

The mall is named after his mentor andgrandfather, Buchanan Tandabantu Ngebu-lana, who traded in Mthatha for years. Sisawas born and grew up in the Corhana loca-tion in Mthatha.

He said as a boy walking in the streets ofMthatha he had watched the suffering of thetown and its people, so he had decided some-

thing needed to be done to change the town.He said he had planned for this develop-

ment in Mthatha for eight years. He had decided that he needed to bring

something more than shopping, as well as en-tertainment.

“So I am happy to bring joy to the peopleof Mthatha.” He said that in research for thisgigantic development he had found out thatthere were 24 towns feeding Mthatha andpeople from these towns were flocking theredaily.

The official opening of the mall was attend-ed by Eastern Cape Premier Pumullo Masual-le.

Addressing the large audience, Masualle

said it was an honour to be part of the openingof this historical development.

He said the development brought change tothe former Transkei as people used to travellong distances from other towns for shop-ping.

“Some of them lost their lives on the wayto or from these towns but now that is overas they have got this facility in Mthatha,” thepremier said.

He expressed his gratitude to Sisa for nam-ing the mall after his grandfather, saying thatwould keep the legacy of former businessmenin the area.

He mentioned people like Archie Nkonyeniwho played a cardinal role in developing

Mthatha.“I noticed here that there are shops that are

not available in East London and Port Eliza-beth, meaning that people from the side ofPort Elizabeth will come to the side of Tran-skei contrary to the then practice wherebypeople were compelled to go to these towns”,Masualle said.

The Billion Group is also developing ashopping centre in Ngcobo, which is due toopen in 2017.

The official opening was also attended byformer Transkei leader Bantu Holomisa,Western Pondoland King Ndamase Ndamseand his mother and the business communitythroughout OR Tambo.

From the sky it must have looked like agiant dust snake crawling along gravel

roads near Graaff Reinet, winding throughvalleys and past the mountains of the Karoo.

That’s what you get when the revitalisedPolo GTi pumps adrenaline with its 141kWengine, heading on the Dassiesfontein roadtowards the farm Rietpoort close to Nieu-Bethesda.It’s not just a test drive (what a pleasure!),

it’s also to meet Rietpoort’s Douglas Stern, awell-known voice against the fracking of theKaroo. The newwell packaged hot hatchPolo, pow-

ered by a 1.8 litre TSI engine (its predecessorhad a 1.4 litre TSI 132kW engine) and 7-speedDSG transmission, hums itsway so effortless-ly, that the novice might think the Karooboasts tarred roads. The Polo GTi manual6-speed transmission version will soon beavailable in South Africa. Sliding open thesun roof one smells the crisp early morning

Karoo air, indigenous plants like the kapok-bos (wild rosemary) and katbos (wild aspara-gus), interspersed with the smell of sheep andcattle manure. The aromas, the majestic mountains and

the vast plains of this arid part of SouthAfrica, beg the questionwhy shale gas shouldbe fracked here of all places where under-ground water reserves are the essence of life. Thanks to theheated leather seats, the crisp

Karoo air is neutralised. But the hot seat inwhich dynamic anti-fracking farmer DouglasStern places the government and oil compa-nies, remains. He is well-known for his fear-less comments on fracking:

1798cc Polo GTi, which Volkswagen for the

first time offered with electronically adjusta-ble dampers, is favoured for its “Sport” selectsuspension to enjoy the engine to its full ca-pacity.This option however, is as life-threatening

on the gravel road as fracking is to the Karoo.Thankfully the new Polo GTi’s handling wasrefined and the electronic stability system of-fers a smooth and stable ride. This contrib-utes in the new Parabolicca 17 inch alloywheels staying on the track. In his farmstead, Douglas explains that the

Karoo basin is thickly laced with dolerite, amagmatic rock with a pinkish colour whenviewed on satellite photos. Cracks in thesedolerite formations allow undergroundwaterto seep to the surface, forming fountainswhich provide the Karoo with its liquid gold:water.“Groundwater collects around dolerite

pipes. If you are looking for water in the Ka-roo you have to drill in the vicinity of doler-ite.”As the pinkish colour is proof of the essen-

THE Eastern Cape jazz music legend, BushyDubazana, has released his fifth album, called Miles to 50.

The album consists of eight tracks and wasreleased onMay 29. In an exclusive interviewwithExpress, Bushy said the reason he calledthe albumMiles to 50, was the journey he hadtravelled to the age of 50. He turns 50 thisyear.“As I’m reaching this age I thought about

the people who have inspired me in all theseyears in themusic industry. That’s why I pro-duced a song which is a tribute to Sipho Gu-

mede, who played a cardinal role in my loveof jazz music. People like him deserve admi-ration because of their role in the music in-dustry,” Dubazana said.He also revealed that he had produced a

song called Patrice Motsepe, dedicated toSouth African mining tycoon Patrice Motse-pe because of his role in sharing his wealthwith the poor of this country. The business mogul recently took an im-

promptu decision to contribute a staggeringR1-million towards the development of box-ing in Mdantsane. This follows a lot of projects in which Mot-

sepe shelled out millions of rands to help thepoor. “This man is so wonderful and that’s

A 31-YEAR-OLD resident of Mvumelwano inQumbu, Nolukholo Ntongana, said she couldnot believe her ears when she got a call in-forming her that she had won a brand newHyundai i10.

As a regular customer at Spargs Spar in

Qumbu,Ntongana entered the supermarket’scar competition in May this year.“I am over the moon because I had no car

and now my life will be much easier becauseI will now be able to do my groceries in a con-venient way, thanks to Spar,” Ntongana said. She said that because she had no driver’s

licence yet, she had asked a colleague to ac-company her to the store to collect her prize.

“I have no licence because I knew I couldnot afford a car, but God has surprised mewith a brand new car frommy favorite super-market,” she said with excitement.Store manager Lunga Mbulawa congratu-

lated Ntongana for being the selected custom-er to win a car out of thousands who entered.“We had a tremendous response from our

customers, with big numbers of entries every

week since the start of the competition earlyin May this year,” said Mbulawa. He added that the competition always creat-

ed excitement as itwas Spar’sway of bringingback to the community it served.“We wish her all the best and safety in her

Hyundai i10 and call for more entries fromour customers as the competition is still on,”he said.

SURELY, dear reader, you know about the ut-terance which says that when days are darkfriends are few.

That’s what we noticed about a guy whomwe used to meet driving with his friends allnight long while we were still grooving. They used to travel to almost all the night-

clubs of UTA in one night.Wawubona nje ukuba there is a good rela-

tionship kulamajita ehlala endawonye, maraamanye babengenazikari. Nina gossip teamnanibabona nisiyaphi?Kaloku as you know we are always on the

street looking for gossip news, not booze orgirls, and we get paid for that. Eish, da manis suffering now andwe don’t knowwhere hisfriends are when he is in that situation.Even though he has no car presently, he

still loves mnandi places even though hisfriends were nowhere to be found. We met him in Chicago trying to go back

to his room. He even told us he tried to phonethe guy whom he used to ‘jujuma’ with, buthewasnot answeringashis cellphone showedhis name.Andwe know themanwas the onewhowas

always putting on pressure to move from oneplace to another with his car.Shame, we felt bad and helped by transport-

ing him to his room in Norwood. This isUTAkendoda during your affording

days friends are all over you but when thethings are bad they just vanish and do nothelp even when you need it.Ask uGesh esafika la wayene friends all

over but once his vehicle got involved at theTutor Ndamase robots they were nowhere tobe found.Mara ke if uphinde wagrand ntwana bazak-

uphinde bavele befuna ukukusebenzisakwakhona. Pasop.

We are not safe on these roads

Uyazi sometimes uthi xa ubona umntu el-ahla isayidi uve ubethelwa nawe kuba daaiding perhaps it can end up affecting you aswell. We just popped in in Libode to buy some-

thing to eat when we saw a heavily drunk oldman driving a green private car.He was trying to get out of the car but was

unable to do so because he was flat-footed if

not grand drunk.Until a young chap came and helped him to

get out.Do you think lamntu angayibona imoto eza

phambi kwakhe xa eyila-way because beku-bonakala ukuba usazakuqhuba nanjengokoengene kwindawo ethengisa utywalawaphin-de waphuma namanye amadampi amane. We found it difficult to watch that as hewas

struggling to get inside now.Ucinge ke lowomntu usazakuqhuba. Bafet-

hu kunzima ezweni sokhile.I wonder bafunda ntoni abantwana bakhe

xa enokufika ekhaya enjeya.

Watch out of these herbalists

We fail to understand why people don’twant to listen because we have been tellingthem about these brothers from our neigh-bouring countries but it seems as if abantubakuthi abafuni kumamela.Recently we met a guy who was crying out

because his wealth had been robbed by theseguys promising to make him a millionaire.Kwathiwamakakhuphe yonke imali ebank toadd more fortunes to it.

Naso ke naso isiyatha esikhulu sesixelelwaukuba imali engaka makangayikhuphi marayena wafostela kuhle kukaMzeke-zeke kubauboniswe imali ibigcwele ibag kwathiwaukuba angakhupha le isebhanki ingangeya-khe le ebeyibona.Engaqale anikwe le seyikhona nje phambi

kokuba ayokhupha le yakhe?Shame, our people are … aisha bazakuthi

siyabathuka. Nditsho etsomini akukho mntuwake wathi elihlwempu wenza omnye isetye-bi, so bantu bakuthi yekani obuyatha kubaayikho le nto. Xa umntu ezakunika iimpukuzemali usayifunelani imali ezakuwinisa iLot-to ungaboni kwalapha kuye ukuba lo mntuakakudingi ukuwina iLotto kuba unezintozakhe. Ungavele uthi ubona ukhandlazaehambangenyawoerenta iqokobhe lematshi-si le ndlu athi uzakukutyebisa nawe uvumelo nto kodwa uyazibonela nje nawe ukuba uy-azedlulela kulo mntu nalapha asebenzelakhona akukho nto ithi angakunika izityh-wentywe ze mali. Mfethu umphile lo R80 000lo gqirha yincame iqale phantsimara useben-ze ngengqondo yakho iyeke ukukuxelela izin-to ezingasoze zenzeke.Uvimile moss.

Wherearehis friendsnow?

why I decided to dedicate this song to him,”Bushy said.Because of this song, Dubazana was called

by Motsepe’s office and at the time we weregoing to print Bushy was having a meetingwith them in Pretoria.Bushy worked on this album with artists

like Brian Thusi, Philani Ngidi and Leon Tu-ta. He said Snoux Poswa was planning tomarket the album online and he was also ne-gotiating with Vodacom to make ring tonesof some of the songs. If you want this red-hot CD you can get it

from Northcrest Spar, Link Pharmacy Ma-deira and at the department of Sport, Recrea-tion, Arts and Culture in Bhisho.
